Bridging physical intuition and hardware efficiency for correlated electronic states: the local unitary cluster Jastrow ansatz for electronic structure

A prominent goal in quantum chemistry is to solve the molecular electronic structure problem for ground state energy with high accuracy. While classical quantum chemistry is a relatively mature field, the accurate and scalable prediction of strongly correlated states found, e.g., in bond breaking and polynuclear transition metal compounds remains an open problem. Within the context of a variational quantum eigensolver, we propose a new family of ansatzes which provides a more physically appropriate description of strongly correlated electrons than a unitary coupled cluster with single and double excitations (qUCCSD), with vastly reduced quantum resource requirements. Specifically, we present a set of local approximations to the unitary cluster Jastrow wavefunction motivated by Hubbard physics. As in the case of qUCCSD, exactly computing the energy scales factorially with system size on classical computers but polynomially on quantum devices. The local unitary cluster Jastrow ansatz removes the need for SWAP gates, can be tailored to arbitrary qubit topologies (e.g., square, hex, and heavy-hex), and is well-suited to take advantage of continuous sets of quantum gates recently realized on superconducting devices with tunable couplers. The proposed family of ansatzes demonstrates that hardware efficiency and physical transparency are not mutually exclusive; indeed, chemical and physical intuition regarding electron correlation can illuminate a useful path towards hardware-friendly quantum circuits.

Advances in Parallel Heat Bath Configuration Interaction

Heat-bath configuration interaction (HCI) is a deterministic method that approaches the full CI limit at greatly reduced computational cost. In this work, computational improvements to the HCI algorithm are introduced targeting speed, parallel efficiency, and memory requirements. The new implementation introduces a hash function to distribute determinants and takes advantage of MPI and OpenMP for parallelism allowing for a (22e,168o) active space to be studied, which explicitly includes 2.39 × 10⁷ variational determinants and 8.95 × 10¹⁰ perturbative determinants. Benchmarks show up to 86% parallel efficiency of the perturbative step on 32 nodes (4096 cores) and a total efficiency of 74%. The new HCI implementation is benchmarked for accuracy against prior results and applied to study the triplet-quintet gap in the challenging [FeO(NH₃)₅]²⁺ complex.

Threshold Photoelectron Spectrum of Cyclobutadiene: Comparison with Time-Dependent Wavepacket Simulations

The C₄H₄ isomer cyclobutadiene (CBD) is the prime model for antiaromaticity and thus a molecule of considerable interest in chemistry. Because it is highly reactive, it can only be studied under isolated conditions. Its electronic structure is characterized by a pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect in the neutral and a E ⊗ β Jahn-Teller effect in the cation. As a result, recording photoelectron spectra as well as describing them theoretically has been challenging. Here we present the photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectrum of cyclobutadiene together with a simulation based on time-dependent wavepacket dynamics that includes vibronic coupling in the ion, taking into account eight vibrational modes in the cation. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is found, and the ionization energy is revised to 8.06 ± 0.02 eV.
