Catalysis mechanism of oxidized polyvinyl alcohol by pseudomonas hydrolase: Insights from molecular dynamics and QM/MM analysis

Preparation of biodegradable composite films based on carboxymethylated holocellulose from wheat straw

Holocellulose was extracted from wheat straw and catalytically transformed into carboxymethylated holocellulose (CMHCS) to prepare a biodegradable composite film. By changing the type and amount of catalyst, the carboxymethylation of the holocellulose was optimized with respect to the degree of substitution (DS). A high DS of 2.46 was achieved in the presence of a cocatalyst composed of polyethylene glycol and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The effect of DS on the properties of CMHCS-derived biodegradable composite films was further investigated. Compared to pristine holocellulose, the mechanical properties of the composite film were significantly improved and increased with increasing DS. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and Young's modulus increased from 6.58 MPa, 51.4 %, and 26.13 MPa for the unmodified holocellulose-based composite film to 14.81 MPa, 89.36 %, and 81.73 MPa for the film derived from the CMHCS with a DS of 2.46. The biodegradability of the composite film was assessed under soil burial biodisintegration conditions and reached 71.5 % degradation after 45 d. Additionally, a possible degradation process for the composite film was proposed. The results indicated that the CMHCS-derived composite film has good comprehensive performance, and CMHCS is expected to be applied in the field of biodegradable composite materials.

Degradable Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Based Supramolecular Plastics with High Mechanical Strength in a Watery Environment

It is challenging to fabricate degradable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based plastics that can be used in watery environments because PVA is soluble in water. In this study, PVA-based supramolecular plastics with excellent degradability in soil and high mechanical strength in watery environments are fabricated by the complexation of vanillin-grafted PVA (VPVA), hydrophobic humic acid (HA), and Fe³⁺ ions (hereafter denoted as VPVA-HA-Fe complexes). Large-area PVA-based plastics can be easily prepared from a solution of VPVA-HA-Fe complexes using a blade-coating method. The high-density of hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions, as well as the reinforcement of self-assembled Fe³⁺ -chelated HA nanoparticles, facilitate the fabrication of PVA-based plastics with a breaking strength of ≈85.0 MPa. After immersion in water at room temperature for 7 d, the PVA-based plastics exhibit a breaking strength of ≈26.2 MPa, which is similar to that of polyethylene in its dry state. Furthermore, owing to the reversibility of the hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions, the VPVA-HA-Fe plastics are recyclable and can be conveniently processed into plastic products with desired shapes. After being placed under soil for ≈108 d, the PVA-based plastics are completely degraded into nontoxic species without requiring manual interference.

Correlation between initial biodegradability determined by docking studies and structure of alkylbenzene sulfonates: A new tool for intelligent design of environmentally friendly anionic surfactants

Gray water constitutes an important fraction of total wastewater. Some of the most problematic compounds in gray water are the anionic surfactants used as an ingredient for domestic and industrial soaps and detergents. The alkylbenzene sulfonates used in commercially available formula are highly complex mixtures of linear (LAS) and branched (BAS) molecules. LAS are classified generally as biodegradable, although their widespread use generates accumulation in the environment. Docking tools, widely used in recent years in the bioremediation field, allow molecular modeling of the ligand-enzyme interaction, which is key to understanding and evaluating the possibility of biodegradation. In this work, molecular details that allow us to establish a biodegradation pattern for some alkylbenzene sulfonates were elucidated. Two hydrogen bonds, key for the anchorage of surfactants to the monooxygenase active site involved in the initial biodegradation, were found. These bonds determine the way surfactants locate in the hydrophobic pocket of the enzyme affecting the biodegradation rate in a structurally dependent manner. For C10 to C12 linear isomers, the degradation rate increased together with the length of the hydrocarbon chain. For C13 and C14 isomers, steric difficulties to accommodate the surfactant molecule in the catalytic site were observed. For branched chain isomers, little or no biodegradation was found. In addition, biodegradation was lower in mixtures than for the pure isomers. These results will allow an intelligent design of this family of anionic surfactants to attenuate their contaminating effects in waters and soils. This study constitutes, to the best of our knowledge, a novel contribution towards the design of environmentally friendly surfactants with higher probabilities of being biodegraded to complete mineralization.
