Atmospheric chemistry of the reaction between propylene carbonate and OH radical: An ab initio RRKM-based master equation study

The interaction of NO2 with organic interfaces is critical in the development of NO2 sensing and trapping technologies, and equally so to the atmospheric processing of marine and continental aerosol. Recent studies point to the importance of surface oxygen groups in these systems, however the role of specific functional groups on the microscopic level has yet to be fully established. In the present study, we aim to provide fundamental information on the interaction and potential binding of NO2 at atmospherically relevant organic interfaces that may also help inform innovation in NO2 sensing and trapping development. We then present an investigation into the structural changes induced by NO2 at the surface of propylene carbonate (PC), an environmentally relevant carbonate ester. Surface-sensitive vibrational spectra of the PC liquid surface are acquired before, during, and after exposure to NO2 using infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). Analysis of vibrational changes at the liquid surface reveal that NO2 preferentially interacts with the carbonyl of PC at the interface, forming a distribution of binding symmetries. At low ppm levels, NO2 saturates the PC surface within 10 minutes and the perturbations to the surface are constant over time during the flow of NO2. Upon removal of NO2 flow, and under atmospheric pressures, these interactions are reversible, and the liquid surface structure of PC recovers completely within 30 min.

Molecular Geometries and Vibrational Contributions to Reaction Thermochemistry Are Surprisingly Insensitive to the Choice of Basis Sets

Calculation of molecular geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies are pre-requisites for thermochemistry calculations. Contrary to conventional wisdom, this paper demonstrates that quantum chemical predictions of the thermochemistry of many gas and solution phase chemical reactions appear to be very insensitive to the choice of basis sets. For a large test set of 80 diverse organic and transition-metal-containing reactions, variations in reaction free energy based on geometries and frequencies calculated using a variety of double and triple-zeta basis sets from the Pople, Jensen, Ahlrichs, and Dunning families are typically less than 4 kJ mol^-1, especially when the quasiharmonic oscillator correction is applied to mitigate the effects of low-frequency modes. Our analysis indicates that for many organic molecules and their transition states, high-level revDSD-PBEP86-D4 and DLPNO-CCSD(T)/(aug-)cc-pVTZ single-point energies usually vary by less than 2 kJ mol^-1 on density functional theory geometries optimized using basis sets ranging from 6-31+G(d) to aug-pcseg-2 and aug-cc-pVTZ. In cases where these single-point energies vary significantly, indicating sensitivity of molecular geometries to the choice of basis set, there is often substantial cancellation of errors when the reaction energy or barrier is calculated. The study concludes that the choice of basis set for molecular geometry and frequencies, particularly those considered in this study, is not critical for the accuracy of thermochemistry calculations in the gas or solution phase.

Exploring the OH-initiated reactions of styrene in the atmosphere and the role of van der Waals complex

Reacting with OH provides a major sink for styrene in the atmosphere, with three possible pathways including OH-addition, H-abstraction and addition-dissociation reactions. However, the total rate coefficients of styrene + OH were measured as 1.2-6.2 × 10^-11 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 under atmospheric conditions, varying by a maximum factor of 5. On the other hand, only one theoretical work reported this rate coefficient as 19.1 × 10^-11 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1, which exhibits up to 16 times that measured in laboratory studies. In the present study, the reaction kinetics of styrene + OH was extensively studied with high-level quantum chemical methods combined with RRKM/master equation simulations. In particular, we carried out theoretical treatments for the formation of pre-reaction Van der Waals complexes of styrene + OH, and examined their influence on the reaction kinetics. The total rate coefficient for styrene + OH is calculated to be 1.7 × 10^-11 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 at 300 K, 1 atm. The main products are addβ (88.2%), add5 (6.9%), addα (1.9%) and add3 (1.7%). Using our computed rate coefficient and the global atmospheric hydroxyl radical concentration (2 × 10⁶ radicals per cm³), the lifetime of styrene in the atmosphere is estimated at 8.0 h. The degradation of styrene might be negligible for the formation of ozone in the atmosphere based upon the photochemical ozone creation potentials calculation. The computed product yields indicate that addβ via subsequent reactions could significantly produce formaldehyde and benzaldehyde that were observed in previous experimental studies on styrene oxidation, and contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols.

Detailed kinetics of hydrogen abstraction from trans-decalin by OH radicals: the role of hindered internal rotation treatment

In this study, the detailed kinetic mechanism of the trans-decalin + OH reaction is firstly investigated for a wide range of conditions (i.e., T = 200-2000 K & P = 0.76-76 000 Torr) using the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level and stochastic Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus based master equation (RRKM-ME) rate model, which includes corrections of the hindered internal rotor (HIR) and tunneling effects. Our predicted global rate constant excellently matches with the scarce experimental measurement (R. Atkinson, et al. Int. J. Chem. Kinet., 1983, 15, 37-50). The H-abstraction channel from Cα of trans-decalin is found to be dominant at low temperatures. A U-shaped temperature-dependent behavior and slightly positive pressure-dependence at low temperatures (e.g., T ≤ 400 K & P = 760 Torr) of the total rate constants are also observed. Detailed analysis reveals that the HIR treatment is essential to capture the kinetic behavior while the tunneling correction only plays a minor role.
