The role played by structural and energy parameters of β-Diketones derivatives as antenna ligands in Eu(III) complexes

Molecular Design of Luminescent Complexes of Eu(III): What Can We Learn from the Ligands

The luminescent metal-organic complexes of rare earth metals are advanced materials with wide application potential in chemistry, biology, and medicine. The luminescence of these materials is due to a rare photophysical phenomenon called antenna effect, in which the excited ligand transmits its energy to the emitting levels of the metal. However, despite the attractive photophysical properties and the intriguing from a fundamental point of view antenna effect, the theoretical molecular design of new luminescent metal-organic complexes of rare earth metals is relatively limited. Our computational study aims to contribute in this direction, and we model the excited state properties of four new phenanthroline-based complexes of Eu(III) using the TD-DFT/TDA approach. The general formula of the complexes is EuL₂A₃, where L is a phenanthroline with -2-CH₃O-C₆H₄, -2-HO-C₆H₄, -C₆H₅ or -O-C₆H₅ substituent at position 2 and A is Cl^- or NO₃^-. The antenna effect in all newly proposed complexes is estimated as viable and is expected to possess luminescent properties. The relationship between the electronic properties of the isolated ligands and the luminescent properties of the complexes is explored in detail. Qualitative and quantitative models are derived to interpret the ligand-to-complex relation, and the results are benchmarked with respect to available experimental data. Based on the derived model and common molecular design criteria for efficient antenna ligands, we choose phenanthroline with -O-C₆H₅ substituent to perform complexation with Eu(III) in the presence of NO₃¯. Experimental results for the newly synthesized Eu(III) complex are reported with a luminescent quantum yield of about 24% in acetonitrile. The study demonstrates the potential of low-cost computational models for discovering metal-organic luminescent materials.

Eu3+ and Tb3+ coordination compounds with phenyl-containing carbacylamidophosphates: comparison with selected Ln3+ β-diketonates

Materials based on Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ coordination compounds are of great interest due to their strong red and green luminescence. Appropriate selection of ligands plays a huge role in optimizing their photophysical properties. Another very helpful instrument for such optimization is theoretical modelling, which permits the prediction of the emissive properties of materials through intramolecular energy transfer analysis. The ligands that allow for achieving high efficiency of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ emissions include carbacylamidophosphates (CAPh, HL). In this brief review, we summarize recent research for lanthanides CAPh-based coordination compounds of general formulas Cat[LnL]₄, [LnL₃Q] and [Ln(HL)₃(NO₃)₃], where Cat⁺ = Cs⁺, NEt4⁺, PPh₄ ⁺ and Q = 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2-bipyridine or triphenylphosphine oxide, involving the use of thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray analysis, and absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. We carried out a comparison with selected Ln³⁺ β-diketonates. Possibilities and developments of theoretical calculations on energy transfer rates are also presented.

Synthesis of green emissive terbium(III) complexes for displays: Optical, electrochemical and photoluminescent analysis

A series of heteroleptic terbium(III) complexes with fluorinated 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTFA) and other heteroaromatic units have been synthesized. The developed heteroleptic complexes were inspected via elemental study, cyclic voltammetry, thermal analysis and spectroscopic investigations. Optical band-gap data proposed the conducting property of prepared complexes. The photoluminescence emission profiles illustrated peaks based on terbium(III) cation (Tb³⁺ ) positioned at ~617, 586, 546 and 491 nm, imputed to ⁵ D₄ to ⁷ F_J (J = 3,4,5,6) transitions separately. Most intense peak at 546 nm corresponding to ⁵ D₄  → ⁷ F₅ transition is accountable for the green emissive character of developed complexes. The luminous character of complexes reveals the sensitization of Tb³⁺ by ligands. Color parameters further corroborates the green emanation of Tb³⁺ complexes. The photometric characteristics of complexes recommended their usages in designing display devices.

A novel biocompatible Eu-based coordination polymers of cytarabine anticancer drug: Preparation, luminescence properties and in vitro anticancer activity studies

In this study, we use cytarabine anticancer drug to synthesize a new rare earth complex with Europium ion. The study work is an attempt to investigate luminescence and biological properties of the Eu-based coordination polymers of cytarabine (Eu-CP-Ara) anticancer drug which have been prepared by us. Eu-CP-Ara has luminescence properties with emission centering at about 619 nm excited with 394 nm. We study cytarabine and Eu-CP-Ara in vitro cytotoxicity. Cytotoxicity of Eu-CP-Ara against lung cancer cells (A549) could even be comparable to the inhibitory effect of cytarabine ligands, showing the advantage of antitumor activity. In addition, Eu-CP-Ara showed lower cytotoxicity to normal liver cells (L02). At the same, from the CLSM images, Eu-CP-Ara has successfully entered the A549 cell. Hence, Eu-CP-Ara can be used as a potential anticancer drug. Eu-CP-Ara may be an effective strategy for the tracking cytarabine against tumours and might impart better accurate treatment effect and therapeutic efficiency.

Europium (III) complex-based fluorescent probe for instantaneous, selective, and sensitive detection of phosgene

Phosgene (carbonyl chloride, COCl₂) is a widely used colorless gas in organic synthesis. However, its high toxicity sets a severe potential damage of public safety. As the fluorescence method has the advantages of simple operation and real-time detection of phosgene, it is extremely important to develop a fluorescent phosgene probe for public health and safety. This study aimed to present a simple Eu³⁺ complex (1) with 2-hydroxyl-1H-benzimidazole moiety as a novel phosgene probe. Probe 1 exhibited characteristic emission of Eu³⁺ in CH₃CN solution, which was specifically quenched after encountering phosgene. The change in the solution color from light red to dark could be easily distinguished with the naked eye under a 365 nm ultraviolet lamp. Finally, the test paper with probe 1 was fabricated for effortless, selective, and visual detection of phosgene gas.

Mononuclear luminous β-diketonate Ln (III) complexes with heteroaromatic auxiliary ligands: Synthesis and luminescent characteristics

A series of lanthanide (samarium and terbium) β-diketonates with heteroaromatic auxiliary ligands have been synthesized. The prepared complexes were characterized through electrochemical, thermal and spectroscopic analyses. Infrared analysis reveals the binding of respective metal ion to oxygen and nitrogen atoms of diketone and ancillary ligands respectively. TG/DTG profiles provide thermal information and specify the high thermal stability of the prepared complexes. The complexes exhibit the sharp and structured Ln-based emission in visible region upon irradiation in UV range. Photophysical analysis demonstrated the green and orange-red emission due to the respective characteristic transitions of Tb³⁺ and Sm³⁺ ions. Photophysical properties affirm the luminous behavior of synthesized complexes. These luminous lanthanide complexes could be used as emitting material in designing OLEDs.
