Magnetic exchange coupling in imido bimetallic uranium(V) complexes. A relativistic DFT study

Electronic Structure and Magneto-Structural Correlations Study of Cu2UL Trinuclear Schiff Base Complexes: A 3d-5f-3d Case

The magnetic properties of trinuclear Schiff base complexes M₂AnLⁱ (M^II = Zn, Cu; An^IV = Th, U; Lⁱ = Schiff base; i = 1-4, 6, 7, 9), exhibiting the [M(μ-O)₂]₂U core structure with adjacent M1···U and M2···U and next-adjacent M1···M2 interactions, featuring 3d-5f-3d subsystems, have been investigated theoretically using relativistic ZORA/B3LYP computations combined with the broken symmetry (BS) approach. Bond order and natural population analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the Cu-O-U coordination is important thus favoring superexchange coupling between the transition metal and the uranium magnetic centers. The calculated coupling constants J_CuU between the Cu and U atoms, agree with the observed shift from the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of the L^1,2,3,4 complexes to the ferromagnetic (ferro) of the L^6,7,9 ones. The structural parameters, i.e., the Cu···U distances and the Cu-O-U angles, as well as the electronic factors driving the magnetic couplings are discussed. The analyses are supported by the study of the mixed ZnCuULⁱ and Cu₂ThLⁱ systems, where in the first complex the Cu^II (3d⁹) ion is replaced by the diamagnetic Zn^II (3d¹⁰) one, whereas in the second complex the U^IV (5f²) paramagnetic center is replaced by the diamagnetic Th^IV (5f⁰) one.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.

DFT Investigations of the Magnetic Properties of Actinide Complexes

Over the past 25 years, magnetic actinide complexes have been the object of considerable attention, not only at the experimental level, but also at the theoretical one. Such systems are of great interest, owing to the well-known larger spin–orbit coupling for actinide ions, and could exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization, arising from a large anisotropy barrier, and magnetic hysteresis of purely molecular origin below a given blocking temperature. Furthermore, more diffuse 5f orbitals than lanthanide 4f ones (more covalency) could lead to stronger magnetic super-exchange. On the other hand, the extraordinary experimental challenges of actinide complexes chemistry, because of their rarity and toxicity, afford computational chemistry a particularly valuable role. However, for such a purpose, the use of a multiconfigurational post-Hartree-Fock approach is required, but such an approach is computationally demanding for polymetallic systems—notably for actinide ones—and usually simplified models are considered instead of the actual systems. Thus, Density Functional Theory (DFT) appears as an alternative tool to compute magnetic exchange coupling and to explore the electronic structure and magnetic properties of actinide-containing molecules, especially when the considered systems are very large. In this paper, relevant achievements regarding DFT investigations of the magnetic properties of actinide complexes are surveyed, with particular emphasis on some representative examples that illustrate the subject, including actinides in Single Molecular Magnets (SMMs) and systems featuring metal-metal super-exchange coupling interactions. Examples are drawn from studies that are either entirely computational or are combined experimental/computational investigations in which the latter play a significant role.

Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Dioxo-Bridged Diuranium Complexes with Diamond-Core Structural Motifs: A Relativistic DFT Study

Electronic structures and magnetic properties of the binuclear bis(μ-oxo) U(IV)/U(IV) K2[{(((nP,Me)ArO)3tacn)U(IV)}2(μ-O)2] and U(V)/U(V) [{(((nP,Me)ArO)3tacn)U(V)}2(μ-O)2] (tacn = triazacyclononane, nP = neopentyl) complexes, exhibiting [U(μ-O)2U] diamond-core structural motifs, have been investigated computationally using scalar relativistic Density Functional Theory (DFT) combined with the Broken Symmetry (BS) approach for their magnetic properties. Using the B3LYP hybrid functional, the BS ground state of the pentavalent [U(V)(μ-O)2U(V)] 5f(1)-5f(1) complex has been found of lower energy than the high spin (HS) triplet state, thus confirming the antiferromagnetic character in agreement with experimental magnetic susceptibility measurements. The nonmagnetic character observed for the tetravalent K2[U(IV)(μ-O)2U(IV)] 5f(2)-5f(2) species is also predicted by our DFT calculations, which led practically to the same energy for the HS and BS states. As reported for related dioxo diuranium(V) systems, superexchange is likely to be responsible for the antiferromagnetic coupling through the π-network orbital pathway within the (μ-O)2 bridge, the dissymmetrical structure of the U2O2 core playing a determining role. In the case of the U(IV) species, our computations indicate that the K(+) counterions are likely to play a role for the observed magnetic property. Finally, the MO analysis, in conjunction with NPA and QTAIM analyses, clarify the electronic structures of the studied complexes. In particular, the fact that the experimentally attempted chemical oxidation of the U(V) species does not lead straightforwardly to binuclear complexes U(VI) is clarified by the MO analysis.

Redox properties of biscyclopentadienyl uranium(V) imido-halide complexes: a relativistic DFT study

Calculations of ionization energies (IE) and electron affinities (EA) of a series of biscyclopentadienyl imido-halide uranium(V) complexes Cp*2U(=N-2,6-(i)Pr2-C6H3)(X) with X =  F, Cl, Br, and I, related to the U(IV)/U(V) and U(V)/U(VI) redox systems, were carried out, for the first time, using density functional theory (DFT) in the framework of the relativistic zeroth order regular approximation (ZORA) coupled with the conductor-like screening model (COSMO) solvation approach. A very good linear correlation (R(2) =  0.993) was obtained, between calculated ionization energies at the ZORA/BP86/TZP level, and the experimental half-wave oxidation potentials E1/2. A similar linear correlation between the computed electron affinities and the electrochemical reduction U(IV)/U(III) potentials (R(2) =  0.996) is obtained. The importance of solvent effects and of spin-orbit coupling is definitively confirmed. The molecular orbital analysis underlines the crucial role played by the 5f orbitals of the central metal whereas the Nalewajski-Mrozek (N-M) bond indices explain well the bond distances variations following the redox processes. The IE variation of the complexes, i.e., IE(F) < IE(Cl) < IE(Br) < IE(I) is also well rationalized considering the frontier MO diagrams of these species. Finally, this work confirms the relevance of the Hirshfeld charges analysis which bring to light an excellent linear correlation (R(2) =  0.999) between the variations of the uranium charges and E1/2 in the reduction process of the U(V) species.
