Design and optimization of ε-poly-l-lysine with specific functions for diverse applications

ε-Poly-l-lysine (ε-PL) is a natural homo-poly(amino acid) which can be produced by microorganisms. With the advantages in broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, ε-PL has been widely used as a preservative in the food industry. Different molecular architectures endow ε-PL and ε-PL-based materials with versatile applications. However, the microbial synthesis of ε-PL is currently limited by low efficiencies in genetic engineering and molecular architecture modification. This review presents recent advances in ε-PL production and molecular architecture modification of microbial ε-PL, with a focus on the current challenges and solutions for the improvement of the productivity and diversity of ε-PL. In addition, we highlight recent examples where ε-PL has been applied to expand the versability of edible films and nanoparticles in various applications. Commercial production and the challenges and future research directions in ε-PL biosynthesis are also discussed. Currently, although the main use of ε-PL is as a food preservative, ε-PL and ε-PL-based polymers have shown excellent application potential in biomedical fields. With the development of synthetic biology, the design and synthesis of ε-PL with a customized molecular architecture are possible in the near future. ε-PL-based polymers with specific functions will be a new trend in biopolymer manufacturing.

Emerging trends in biomaterials for sustainable food packaging: A comprehensive review

This comprehensive review investigates a variety of creative approaches in the field of sustainable food packaging biomaterials in response to growing environmental concerns and the negative effects of traditional plastic packaging. The study carefully looks at new developments in biomaterials, such as biodegradable polymers, ceramics, composites, and metal alloys, in response to the growing need for environmentally suitable substitutes. It highlights how they might replace conventional plastic packaging and lessen environmental damage. Moreover, the incorporation of nanotechnology into packaging is closely examined due to its crucial function in improving barrier qualities, introducing antimicrobial properties, and introducing smart packaging features. The investigation includes edible coatings and films made of biodegradable polymers that offer new sensory experiences in addition to prolonging the shelf life of products. The review emphasizes the use of biomaterials derived from food processing and agricultural waste, supporting environmentally responsible methods of producing materials while simultaneously using less resources and waste. As a strong defense against plastic pollution, the report highlights the food industry's increasing use of recyclable and biodegradable packaging, which is in line with the concepts of the circular economy. A movement in consumer tastes and regulatory pressures toward sustainable food packaging is evident in global market patterns. Notwithstanding these encouraging trends, there are still issues to be resolved, including cost-effectiveness, technological constraints, and the scalability of biomaterial production. This thorough analysis concludes by highlighting the critical role biomaterials have played in guiding the food industry toward sustainability and emphasizing the need for ongoing research and development to adequately address environmental issues on a worldwide scale and satisfy the growing demand for environmentally friendly packaging options. Biomaterials show great promise as catalysts for the food industry's transition to a sustainable future.

Development and characterization of antioxidant bilayer film based on poly lactic acid-bitter vetch (Vicia ervilia) seed protein incorporated with Pistacia terebinthus extract for active food packaging

This study focuses on designing an active bilayer food package film based on polylactic acid (PLA) and bitter vetch seed protein incorporated with Pistacia terebinthus extract (PTE). The effect of PTE on the physicochemical, barrier, structural, mechanical, and antioxidant properties of the active film was determined. Moisture content, water solubility, and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the active films indicated that the addition of PTE increased its suitability for food packaging. FE-SEM micrographs illustrated that the resulting films had a smooth and dense surface, describing a continuous network of protein molecules within the film structure. FTIR analysis displayed the physical interaction between PTE and the film polymer. XRD revealed an increase in the crystallinity of the active films. The resulting active film had a low migration rate (<7%) of phenolic compounds into fatty food simulant. Notably, the addition of PTE significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased the tensile strength and Young's modulus (from 15.13 and 315.98 MPa to 14.07 and 254.07 MPa, respectively). Concurrently, there was an increase in the elongation at break of the active films (from 23.19 to 75.60%), indicating higher flexibility compared to control films. Additionally, the incorporation of PTE improved the thermal properties of active films. The antioxidant capacity of the designed films was measured based on their DPPH radical scavenging activity, revealing that the antioxidant capacity of the control film increased from 44.65% to 59.72% in the active film containing 15% PTE. In conclusion, the prepared bilayer film can effectively be used as an active food package for sensitive foods to oxidation.

Nanocoating-konjac application as postharvest handling to extend the shelf life of Siamese oranges

Siamese orange fruit is very popular today, driven by the increasing public demand or healthy food. Siamese oranges contain bioactive phenolic compounds, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals, and fiber which are good for health. The weakness of Siamese oranges is their quality declines quickly and their short shelf life. Postharvest handling with the application of coatings from natural ingredients to extend the shelf life of orange fruits is currently needed to reduce the use of synthetic materials. Natural ingredients that have the potential to be used as base materials for coatings are konjac tubers because they contain glucomannan polysaccharides and bioactive compounds that can form coatings. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of nanocoating-konjacon the shelf life of Siamese oranges. The research began with the preparation of the nanocoating-konjac formula as the main ingredient of the nanocoating and the application of the nano coating-konjac on the surface of Siamese oranges. This study used a completely randomized two-factor design, namely nanocoating-konjac application (without coating, coating, and nanocoating) and storage time (0, 5, 10, and 15 days), three replications. Variables observed: Weight loss, number of damaged fruits, color, texture, acidity, total soluble solids, water content, vitamin C, and total plate count. The data obtained was tested for diversity with SPSS, if it shows differences the test is continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The conclusion of this research is the application of nanocoating-konjac, coating-konjac and without coating on Siamese oranges to determine the effect of weight loss, number of damaged fruits, color, texture, acidity, total dissolved solids, water content, vitamin C, and total plate count during storage. This research recommends that the application of nanocoating-konjac as postharvest handling can extend the shelf life of Siamese oranges until the 10th days.
