Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent form of pediatric leukemia. The gut microbiome (GM) is crucial for proper nutrition, immunity, and biological conflict. Since the relationship between ALL and GM is bidirectional, ALL occurrence and treatment are closely related to GM destruction and the development of impaired immunity. Studies have discovered significant GM alterations in patients with ALL, including decreased diversity, that are likely directly caused by the development of ALL. Chemotherapy, antibiotic therapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are the mainstays of treatment for pediatric ALL. These approaches affect the composition, diversity, and abundance of intestinal microorganisms, which in turn affects therapeutic efficiency and can cause a variety of complications. Modulating the GM can aid the recovery of patients with ALL. This article discusses the various treatment modalities for pediatric ALL and their corresponding effects on the GM, as well as the changes in the GM that occur in children with ALL from diagnosis to treatment. Gaining a greater understanding of the link between ALL and the GM is expected to help improve treatment for pediatric ALL in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypodontia represents a notable clinical and public health concern. OBJECTIVE To assess the prevalence of congenitally missing permanent teeth in a sample of orthodontic/dental patients of Caucasian origin originating from the Greek island of Lesvos. MATERIALS AND METHODS Panoramic X-rays from 621 children and adolescents, aged 9 to 16 years (average age 12.5 years), 521 seeking orthodontic care (orthodontic group) and 100 seeking dental care (non-orthodontic group) were examined to identify congenitally missing permanent teeth. RESULTS The orthodontic group exhibited a 5.5% prevalence of congenitally missing permanent teeth (2.8% females; 2.7% males), while the non-orthodontic group showed a prevalence of 4% (3% females; 1% males). The descending order of prevalence for missing tooth types was as follows: lower second premolars, upper laterals, lower central incisors, lower canines, upper second premolars, and lower second molars. Among orthodontic patients with missing teeth, 62% presented with an Angle's Class II malocclusion. Hypodontia was most frequently observed in the mandible. No statistically significant differences were observed between the orthodontic and non-orthodontic groups in terms of the percentage of children and types of congenitally missing teeth. CONCLUSIONS Congenitally missing teeth were observed in about 4-5% of the studied population with a female predilection. The lower second premolar was the most commonly absent tooth, followed by the maxillary lateral incisors. An Angle's Class II malocclusion was present in the majority of orthodontic patients with hypodontia, mostly in the mandible.

Abstract
Background: In recent years, the incidence of neoplastic diseases in children has increased significantly. Immunodepression triggers undesirable effects in the oral cavity such as mucositis, opportunistic infections, oral bleeding, xerostomia, dysgeusia, decay, dental malformations and pain. Objective: We aim to assess, through salivary tests, the quality of saliva in pediatric patients affected by oncohematological diseases and treated with chemo/radiotherapy compared to non-treated subjects. Methods: A total of 20 subjects aged between 5 and 18 years, with oncological pathologies undergoing radio and/or chemotherapy, were evaluated. The control group consisted of 20 healthy children of the same age. The two groups of subjects were asked to undergo salivary tests. Descriptive statistics were computed for each item. Fisher’s exact test was conducted to compare case and control groups. Results: Subjects treated with chemo/radiotherapy had a lower pH and therefore a higher salivary acidity that predisposes to caries and the oral hygiene of children with oncohematological diseases was more deficient than that of the control group. Conclusions: The early detection of these indicators, and the prevention carried out to limit their severity, is an important aspect of the comprehensive care of oncohematological subjects. Pediatric dentists can play a crucial a role enabling good quality of life during cancer therapy.

Abstract
A number of systemic diseases including hematological disorders have manifestations in the oral cavity region. These manifestations may often represent early signs of the underlying hematopoietic disease and occur frequently in leukemia. Despite the fact that leukemia has long been known to be associated with oral health deterioration, the available literature on this topic consists mostly of case reports, without data to conclude these. The aim of the study was to assess dentition state in leukemic patients during one cycle of chemotherapy and its correlation with blood parameters. The study included 102 adults treated because of leukemia at the Clinic of Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the university hospital in Lublin, Poland. The sample group consisted of 51 women and 51 men aged 22 to 72 (54.07 ± 10.33) with following diagnoses: Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)-55 patients (53.92%), Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)-17 patients (16.67%), Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)-16 patients (15.69%), Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)-10 patients (9.80%), Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) -3 patients (2.94%), Chronic hairy cell leukemia (HCL)-1 patient (0.98%). DMFT index was used to assess dentition state. After the cycle of chemotherapy, their dentition state changed in terms of decayed, missing and filled teeth and correlated with hematological parameters. Adult patients with leukemia have high dental treatment needs, and high number of missing teeth; thus, a comprehensive and fast dental treatment is necessary to avoid systemic complications and ensure better quality of life.

Abstract
Erythroleukemia disease is caused by over production of malignant blood and immature large number of blood cells enters into peripheral compartment. Biophysical and biochemical changes in plasma and erythrocyte membrane in erythroleukemia treated rats were identified. Our study, leukemia is experimentally exposed in rats were injecting erythroleukemia cells (FLC) (H-2d) intravenously in adult rats and normal control rats were maintained. Significant increase in the activity of blood glucose, proteins levels, aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) values and significant decrease in haemoglobin (Hb), albumin levels in erythroleukemia treated rats were observed when compared with control rats. Cholesterol and low density liproprotein (LDL) levels increased significantly in erythroleukemia treated rats but triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels decreased significantly. Levels of red cell membrane cholesterol decreased in erythroleukemia treated rats in comparison with control while levels of phospholipids and proteins increased in erythrocytes of erythroleukemia treated rats. Red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) counts increased significantly and platelet count decreased. C/P (cholesterol/phospholipid) ratio decreased significantly in erythroleukemia treated rats. This study has been undertaken for the first time to investigate the effect of (FLC) (H-2d) erythroleukemia cells (treated) in intravenously in adult rats and normal control rats. Results indicate biophysical and biochemical alterations at molecular level in plasma and erythrocyte membrane.

Abstract
Background No definitive protocol has been introduced for treatment or prevention of chemotherapy induced mucositis. The aim of this study was to assess the additive effect of Persica and chlorhexidine on chemotherapy induced mucositis of children with hematomalignancies.
Material and Methods This randomized clinical trial was performed on 44 children aged 6 to 12 years who were under a similar maintenance chemotherapy protocol for their hematomalignancies. The clinician instructed oral hygiene cares to the patients and their parents and the severity of the mucositis and oral health status of patients were evaluated according to Oral Assessment Guide index. Then, the patients were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups and were instructed to rinse either with Persica oral drops or normal saline, twice a day for two weeks. Subsequently, the patients in both groups were educated to rinse with chlorhexidine for 30 seconds and avoid eating for an hour. Second and third oral examinations were performed on the 8th and 15th day using the same questionnaire.
Results Comparing severity of mucositis and oral health status of patients did not show any significant difference between treatment groups in either of examination sessions (p>0.05). However, both treatment groups showed statistically significant oral health improvement, in terms of mucositis, plaque accumulation and gingival condition, in 14 days following mouthrinses administration (p<0.05).
Conclusions Both mouth-rinse combinations were effective on mucositis, plaque and gingival status of children receiving chemotherapy. However, Persica does not seem to pose additional effect on chlorhexidine in decreasing severity of chemotherapy induced mucositis. Abstract
The burden of oral health diseases in children with leukaemia and the impact of cancer treatment on their oral health have not been studied in Sudan. The present study assesses the oral health status of leukemic children through measuring caries experience, gingival status, oral hygiene status and mucositis. It also explores the association between the oral health status of children with leukaemia and their parental education, oral hygiene habits, treatment stage and type of leukaemia. A cross sectional hospital-based study was conducted at the Radiation and Isotope Center Khartoum, Khartoum State. A total of 87 children were included in this study. Data were collected by interviewer questionnaire and clinical examination. The oral health status revealed high prevalence of untreated dental caries (37.9%) and the majority (67.9%) of children had poor oral hygiene. Nearly, all children with leukaemia (93.1%) had never visited a dental health facility in their lives. Regarding the treatment stages of leukaemia, the severity of dental caries was found to be more significant in the maintenance phase, while oral mucositis was more significant in the induction phase.

Abstract
Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with the occurrence of severe oral mucositis (SOM) in pediatric oncology patients during the chemotherapeutic treatment. This is a nested case-control to a prospective cohort that monitored 105 patients for 10 consecutive weeks after the beginning of the chemotherapy treatment. Logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with SOM, by group of malignancy (hematologic or solid tumors) (Sig.=5%). To patients with hematologic tumors were found factors associated with SOM in two weeks of treatment: in the 6th week (increase in frequency of chemotherapy doses (OR=3.02)) and in the 7th week (female sex (OR=21.28); and increase in frequency of chemotherapy doses (OR=2.51)); and to patients with solid tumors were found factors associated with SOM in five weeks of treatment: in the 1st week (female sex (OR=14.43); age increase (OR=1.24)); in the 2nd week (Miscellany (OR=6.39)); in the 5th week (Antimetabolites (OR=17.44); Miscellany (OR=45.42); and platelets reduction (OR=1.12)); in the 6th week (creatinine increase (OR=1.63)); and in the 7th week (creatinine increase (OR=2.39)). For patients with hematologic tumors, to be female, and the increase in the frequency of chemotherapy doses increased the risk for SOM and for patients with solid tumors, to be female, the increase in age and in level blood concentration of creatinine, the reduction in number of platelets and the use of chemotherapy with miscellany and antimetabolites agents were associated with an increase in risk for occurrence of SOM.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate changes in the oral health status of children under the age of 14 years with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) attending a cancer centre before and after chemotherapy treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 32 children with ALL without distinction of gender were selected for study. The oral cavity of the patients was evaluated before the induction stage and 17 days later. Clinical evaluation of the submandibular, submental, and cervical lymph nodes was performed. Saliva samples were collected during the early morning hours. Bacterial plaque was assessed by using the Silness and Löe plaque index (SLPI) and gingiva status was evaluated with the gingival Löe and Silness index (GLSI). The WHO toxicity oral scale was used to record the degree of oral mucositis. The resulting data were analysed with McNemar's test, t test (for related samples), and Wilcoxon test. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences for palpable lymph nodes, paleness of oral mucosa, and ecchymoseis, respectively, P ≤ 0.000, P = 0.03, and P = 0.01, with these manifestations decreasing significantly after treatment. Incipient gingivitis had frequencies of 71.9% and 75% before and after treatment, respectively. The mean SLPI score declined significantly from 1.16 ± 0.52 (before treatment) to 0.56 ± 0.36 (after treatment) (P < 0.000); salivary flow increased significantly from 0.54 ± 0.34 to 1.22 ± 1.07 after chemotherapy treatment (P < 0.00). Oral mucositis was present in 24 children (75%) with a 1-2 severity level. CONCLUSIONS After chemotherapy treatment, there were changes in the oral conditions of children with ALL. Some manifestations decreased after treatment, whereas in others increased.

Abstract
Childhood cancer survivors are at high risk for a myriad of complications secondary to oncologic treatment regimens. Caries is one of the major sequela of oncologic treatment that place the childhood cancer survivor at risk for complications in adulthood. Dental caries can be prevented with optimum dental care, early identification, and patient education. A barrier to their prevention is the lack of routine dental care received by this population. Health care providers are in a prime position to remedy this problem through their frequent contact with the childhood cancer survivor during sick and well-child office visits. The purpose of this article is to convey information and tools related to dental caries in the pediatric cancer survivor younger than 18 years to enhance primary care providers', acute care pediatric nurse practitioners', and oncology providers' knowledge of risk stratification, early identification, and treatment regimens for caries in the childhood cancer survivor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the oral health of adult patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia. METHODS Patients with initially diagnosed acute myeloid (AML) or lymphocytic (ALL) leukemia and a matched healthy control (HC) group were included. The oral investigation comprised inspection of the oral mucosa; the decayed (D), missing (M), and filled (F) teeth (DMF-T) index; and a detailed periodontal status. Subgingival biofilm samples were analyzed (polymerase chain reaction) for the presence of selected potentially periodontal pathogenic bacteria. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test, chi-squared test, and Mann-Whitney U test (significance level α = 5%). RESULTS Thirty-nine patients with leukemia (AML 26, ALL 13) and 38 HCs were included. Oral mucosal findings were present in 62% of L compared to 0% of HC patients, whereby gingival hyperplasia was the most detected finding. Furthermore, a higher caries prevalence in leukemia patients was shown (D value 3.64 ± 3.98 vs. 0.72 ± 1.72, p < 0.01). The periodontal parameters were poorer in leukemia patients. No substantial differences in microbiological findings of selected bacteria were detected within L group and between L and HC patients. CONCLUSION The high prevalence of oral diseases supports the demand of an early and consequent dental treatment of leukemia patients, especially considering subsequent therapy.

Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer that most frequently affects children, and its treatment involves intensive chemotherapy, which might interfere with the normal development of dental tissues. The aim of our study was to measure the incidence of dental caries and enamel hypoplasia in children diagnosed with ALL treated according to the Berlin-Frankfurt-Munster-95 (ALL-BFM-95) protocol during the complete remission phase. Two groups of children between 8-12 years of age were investigated: Group 1 consisted of 36 children with ALL, and Group 2 of 58 control age-matched children. The decay-missing-filling index for the deciduous teeth (DMFT) and the presence of hypoplasia in the first permanent molars (MH) or in both incisors and molars (MIH) were recorded. The results were statistically analyzed and showed that there were no differences between the groups regarding the DMFT values (p >0.05), but there was a statistically significant difference in the incidence of MH and MIH between groups (p <0.05). According to our results, chemotherapy was not responsible for the decay process, as there were no differences in DMFT indices between the groups, but the high incidence of MH and MIH in the ALL group indicates the need of a good dental care for these children in order to prevent future dental complications.

Abstract
The study aimed to assess the needs and options for salivation management in children treated with antileukemic chemotherapy. In a preliminary cross-sectional study the saliva flow rate and viscosity were evaluated in 75 leukemic children that received chemotherapy with methotrexate in low dose (44 people, 44 episode, group 1), or in high-dose (31 people, 42 episode, group 2), and in 25 healthy children (group 3). Then, 26 children were randomly divided into two groups in the 70 episodes course of high-dosed chemotherapy, and received acetylcysteine (A) or only standard oral management (S) for 1-10 day of treatment. Parameters of salivation and children performance (Lansky et al.) were evaluated. Mann-Whitney U-test was used for analysis. In group 1, 2 and 3 the flow rate (Me [LQ/HQ]) was 0.5 [0.3; 0.8]; 0.9 [0.6; 1.2] and 0.5 [0.3; 0.6] ml/min respectively (p1-3>0.05; p<0.01; p1-2<0.05). Viscosity levels in group 1, 2 and 3 were 2.75 [3.67; 3.67], 10.05 [5.3; 26.0] and 3.9 [2.7; 6.5] unites respectively (p1-3>0.05; p2, 3<0.01; p1, 2<0.01). In group A and S the flow rate was 2.7 [0.5; 4.1] and 0.4 [0.1; 2.2] ml/min (р<0.05); viscosity was 1.5 [1.2; 4.1] and 6.4 [5.3; 8.1] unites (р<0.001), performance Lansky index was 80 [65; 90] and 70 [60; 80] (р<0.01) respectively. Salivation dysfunction complicates the chemotherapy with high-dosed methotrexate in children: it is indicated by high viscosity combined with elevated flow rate. Acetylcysteine normalizes saliva viscosity and improves children's performance.

Abstract
The early signs of leukemia can usually manifest in the oral cavity due to infiltration of leukemic cells or due to associated decline in normal marrow elements, especially in the acute phase of leukemia, as common lesions at this stage of the disease can be screened and diagnosed by the dentist. Therefore, the dental community should be aware of the oral manifestations of leukemia and oral complications of anticancer treatment. This can eliminate the oral symptoms of the disease and to improve quality of life for these patients. An extensive search in PubMed line using a combination of terms like “leukemia, children, dental, Acute lymphoblastic leukemia, pediatric” for last ten years was made. Reviews and case reports concerned about acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children were all collected and analyzed and data were extracted. Accordingly, the aim of this review is to highlight on the oral presentations of leukemia in children attending dental clinics and the management of its undesirable side effects.

Abstract
Acute leukaemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, the acute lymphoblastic type accounting for the majority of cases. Children affected by leukaemia receive various forms of treatments including chemotherapeutic agents and stem cell transplants. Leukaemia and its treatment can directly or indirectly affect oral health and further dental treatments. The oral complications include mucositis, opportunistic infections, gingival inflammation and bleeding, xerostomia and carious lesions. An additional consideration in children is the impact of the treatments on the developing dentition and on orofacial growth. The aim of this review is to describe the oral complications in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and the methods of prevention and management before, during and after the cancer treatment.

Abstract
In leukemia, oral manifestations indicate aberrations in oral microbiota. Microbiota structure is determined by both host and environmental factors. In human hosts, how health status shapes the composition of oral microbiota is largely unknown. Taking advantage of advances in high-throughput sequencing, we compared the composition of supragingival plaque microbiota of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) pediatric patients with healthy controls. The oral microbiota of leukemia patients had lower richness and less diversity compared to healthy controls. Microbial samples clustered into two major groups, one of ALL patients and another of healthy children, with different structure and composition. Abundance changes of certain taxa including the Phylum Firmicutes, the Class Bacilli, the Order Lactobacillales, the Family Aerococcaceae and Carnobacteriaceae, as well as the Genus Abiotrophia and Granulicatella were associated with leukemia status. ALL patients demonstrated a structural imbalance of the oral microbiota, characterized by reduced diversity and abundance alterations, possibly involved in systemic infections, indicating the importance of immune status in shaping the structure of oral microbiota.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to review the orofacial manifestations in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). METHODS Indexed databases were explored using various combinations of the following keywords: "sickle cell anemia," "sickle cell disease," "oral health status" and "dental inflammation." RESULTS Hypoxia has been associated with osteomyelitis of the jaws, particularly the mandible in patients with SCD. Bone marrow hyperplasia in these patients causes depression of nasal bridge, midfacial overgrowth and malocclusion. Mental nerve neuropathy due to osteomyelitis of the mandible causes numbness in the lower lip and chin. A diminished blood supply to teeth causes necrosis of the dental pulp in patients with SCD. Dental caries is a common manifestation in patients with SCD, particularly in those with underprivileged living standards. The association between SCD and periodontal inflammatory conditions remains unclear. CONCLUSIONS Oral health problems in patients with SCD are rare and occur mainly as a result of the poor oral hygiene maintenance.
