Effect of Pilates exercises on balance and gross motor coordination in children with Down syndrome

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of Pilates exercises on balance and gross motor coordination in children with Down syndrome (DS).

METHODS

Forty children with DS, aged 8 up to 10 years, were randomly divided into two groups; experimental and control groups. A designed physical therapy program was applied for both groups, while the experimental group received an additional Pilates exercise program. Balance and gross motor coordination as primary outcomes and quality of life (QoL) as secondary outcome were assessed using Biodex balance system (BBS), Bruininks Oseretsky of Motor Proficiency (BOT-2), and Pediatric quality of life inventory (PedsQL™) sequentially.

RESULTS

Both experimental (Pilates) and control groups demonstrated significant improvements in dynamic balance, gross motor coordination, and QoL after interventions. However, comparison between groups showed significant improvement in favor of the Pilates group in all measured outcomes (P < 0.0001).

CONCLUSION

Adding Pilates exercises to the designed physical therapy program could provide more significant improvements in balance, gross motor coordination, and QoL in children with DS.

Pilates-mat training and detraining: Effects on body composition and physical fitness in pilates-trained women

INTRODUCTION

Pilates-mat is an effective training method to enhance several physiological and fitness parameters, although the effects of pilates-mat detraining on body composition and physical fitness remains largely unknown. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of pilates-mat training and detraining on body composition and physical fitness in pilates-trained females.

METHODS

Twenty females (age: 45.1 ± 8.7 years) followed an 8-week pilates-mat training program followed by a 3-week detraining period. Measurements performed at the beginning of the training intervention, at the end of the 8-week training program and at the end of the 3-week detraining period and included: anthropometric characteristics, body composition analysis, thigh, hip and waist circumferences, blood pressure, heart rate at rest (HRr), maximum handgrip strength, abdominal curls, lower body flexibility and aerobic capacity.

RESULTS

Pilates-mat training significantly decreased body fat percentage (BF%), visceral fat and HRr (p < 0.05) but these variables returned to baseline after detraining. Trunk fat, thigh and waist circumferences decreased significantly after training and remained significantly low following detraining (p < 0.05). Abdominal curls, lower body flexibility and aerobic capacity increased significantly following pilates-mat training and remained unchanged after detraining (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that 8 weeks of pilates-mat training enhanced body composition and physical fitness and these physiological and physical fitness benefits were remained unaltered during the 3-week of pilates-mat detraining period. However, BF% and visceral fat returned to baseline levels following the detraining period suggesting that for maintaining the reduction in BF% and visceral fat a long-period of pilates-mat detraining should be avoided.

Lifestyle Interventions, Kidney Disease Progression, and Quality of Life: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Rationale & Objective

Poor dietary patterns and low physical activity levels are important lifestyle-related factors that contribute to negative health outcomes in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Previous systematic reviews have not explicitly focused on these lifestyle factors, nor undertaken meta-analyses of any effects. We aimed to evaluate the effect of lifestyle interventions (such as diet, exercise, and other lifestyle-related interventions) on the risk factors for and progression of CKD and the quality of life.

Study Design

Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Setting & Study Populations

Individuals aged 16 years or older with CKD stages 1 to 5 not requiring kidney replacement therapy.

Selection Criteria for Studies

Randomized controlled trials of interventions.

Data Extraction

Kidney function, albuminuria, creatinine, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, body weight, glucose control, and quality of life.

Analytical Approach

A random-effects meta-analysis with evidence certainty assessed using GRADE.

Results

Seventy-eight records describing 68 studies were included. Twenty-four studies (35%) were dietary interventions, 23 (34%) exercise, 9 (13%) behavioral, 1 (2%) hydration, and 11 (16%) multiple component. Lifestyle interventions resulted in significant improvements in creatinine (weighted mean difference [WMD], -0.43 mg/dL; 95% CI, -0.74 to -0.11; P = 0.008); 24-hour albuminuria (WMD, -53 mg/24 h; 95% CI, -56 to -50; P < 0.001); systolic blood pressure (WMD, -4.5 mm Hg; 95% CI, -6.7 to -2.4; P < 0.001); diastolic blood pressure (WMD, -2.2 mm Hg; 95% CI, -3.7 to -0.8; P = 0.003); and body weight (WMD, -1.1 kg; 95% CI, -2.0 to -0.1; P = 0.025). Lifestyle interventions did not result in significant changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (0.9 mL/min/1.73 m²; 95% CI, -0.6 to 2.3; P = 0.251). However, narrative synthesis indicated that lifestyle intervention resulted in improvements in the quality of life.

Limitations

Certainty of the evidence was rated very low for most outcomes, primarily owing to the risk of bias and inconsistency. No meta-analysis was possible for quality-of-life outcomes because of variations in measurement tools.

Conclusions

Lifestyle interventions seem to positively affect some risk factors for progression of CKD and quality of life.

Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Massage for the Treatment of Restless Leg Syndrome in Hemodialysis Patients: A Meta-Analysis of 5 Randomized Controlled Trials

Aim

We conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of massage for the treatment of hemodialysis patients with restless leg syndrome (RLS).

Methods

A comprehensive literature search was performed using the PubMed database, EMBASE database (via OVID), and the Cochrane Library in order to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published before August 31, 2021. After extracted essential data and assessed risk of bias of each eligible study, we calculated the pooled estimate of RLS score and safety after treatment. Statistical analysis was performed by using Review Manager 5.3.

Results

Five studies involving 369 hemodialysis patients with RLS were analyzed. The RLS score after treatment [mean difference (MD), -12.01; 95% confidence interval (CI), -14.91 to -9.11] and mean difference of RLS score at the beginning and end of treatment [mean difference (MD), -11.94; 95% confidence interval (CI), -15.45 to -8.43] in a massage group was significantly better than that in route care group. Subgroup analysis suggested that massage with lavender oil also significantly reduced the RLS score after treatment (MD, -14.22; 95% CI, -17.81 to -10.63) and mean difference of RLS score at the beginning and end of treatment (MD, -14.87; 95% CI, -18.29 to -11.45) compared with route care. Meanwhile, massage regime significantly relieved RLS severity compared with route care but did not increase adverse events.

Conclusion

Massage may be a preferred treatment modality for hemodialysis patients with RLS because it effectively reduces RLS symptoms, relieves RLS severity, and does not increase the risk of adverse events. However, future study with a larger sample size is warranted due to the fact that only limited number of eligible studies with small sample size are enrolled.

La persona con enfermedad renal crónica: una revisión sistemática de las intervenciones de salud

Introducción: Existen intervenciones enfocadas a la educación y capacitación de las personas con enfermedad renal crónica sin embargo, muchas de ellas fragmentan a la persona al considerar sólo el incremento de conocimientos y/o conductas, por lo que al no existir una atención integral no se logran cambios favorables. Objetivo: identificar los aspectos teóricos y metodológicos considerados en el diseño e implementación de intervenciones de salud para las personas con enfermedad renal. Metodología: Se ha realizado una revisión sistemática a través de las bases de datos Biblioteca Virtual de la Salud y PubMed, analizando artículos en idioma inglés y español que hayan implementado una intervención a las personas con enfermedad renal crónica. Resultados: De un total de 218 artículos arrojados por las bases de datos sólo fueron seleccionadas 28 publicaciones. Para su análisis se consideró el tamaño de la muestra, el diseño y enfoque teórico de la intervención, los principales resultados y conclusiones. Existen investigaciones que involucran el aspecto psicológico, particularmente el área motivacional como eje central en el cambio conductual y consideran a Bandura como referente teórico, lo cual otorga mejoras en las conductas de salud de las personas con enfermedad renal. Conclusiones: Una intervención con bases teóricas definidas puede contribuir a la prevención en salud con un bajo costo y alto impacto en los estilos de vida de las personas. Además de ser un gran aporte al conocimiento de educación en salud y a la profesión como ciencia.

The Effect of Aerobic Exercise on the Quality of Life of Male Patients Who Suffer from Chronic Schizophrenia: Double-Blind, Randomized Control Trial

Background: Chronic schizophrenia is a long-term and severe mental disorder. Aerobic exercises can reduce the symptoms of mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia, through improving the patient's quality of life (QoL). Objectives: The current study aimed to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise on the QoL of male schizophrenics hospitalized at the Razi Psychiatric Center in Tabriz from 2015 to 2016. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 68 patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into groups of intervention (n = 34) and control (n = 34). The intervention group has benefited from the aerobic exercise 24 sessions for 8 weeks, 12 hours in total. The control group simultaneously enjoyed the fresh air. The Schizophrenic Quality of Life Scale (SQLS) was completed before and after intervention in both groups. The data were analyzed in SPSS20 using the t-test and chi-squared test. Results: The mean age of participants was 37.82 ± 7.14 years. No significant differences were found between the demographic characteristics of the two groups. This study showed that no significant difference was found in the quality of life in both groups before intervention (P ≤ 0.37), but there was a significant difference after the intervention (P = 0.001). Aerobic exercises reduce patient's mental disorders and promote their QoL (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Regular aerobic exercise can reduce the symptoms of male patients with schizophrenics, which in turn improves all dimensions of QoL

The effects of Pilates and yoga participant's on engagement in functional movement and individual health level

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Pilates and yoga participating in their functional movement and individual health level. Ninety volunteers were randomly divided into three groups and evenly recruited female and male participants in each group through a reliable organization. Their age group was between the 30s and 40s. They were informed the research process and assigned to the consent form. Pilates group (n=30), yoga group (n=30), and control group (n=30) were assigned to fulfill short form of Rand 36-item health survey (SF-36) survey form based on self-administration method and were scored functional movement screen (FMS) test before the intervention. Pilates and yoga group were carried out certain exercise program 1-hr duration 3 times per week for 8 weeks. And control group did not perform any exercise during experimental period. After completion of the 8-week Pilates and yoga program, they recorded SF-36 and were scored FMS score for posttest in same way. When we compared the differences between pre- and posttreatment scores, we found that there was statistically significant difference among three groups on FMS (F [2,89]=15.56, P<0.001) and there was significant change in favor of Pilates group groups (F [2,89]=52.36, P<0.001) on SF-36. To conclude, Pilates group was more effective for improving functional movement and individual health level to assess quality of life than yoga group and control group.

Effects of glycerin oil and lavender oil massages on hemodialysis patients' restless legs syndrome

OBJECTIVES

To determine the effects of glycerin oil and lavender oil massages on hemodialysis patients' restless legs syndrome (RLS).

METHODS

Ninety hemodialysis patients with RLS were randomly allocated into two intervention groups and one control group, each consisting of 35 participants. The control group received routine care, and the intervention groups received effleurage massage with lavender and glycerin oil in addition to routine care for one month. RLS intensity was measured among the three groups using the Restless Legs Syndrome Rating Scale.

RESULTS

At the beginning of the study, the results showed no significant difference among the three groups' scores. At the end of the study, the mean RLS scores were significantly lower in the intervention groups compared to the control group (F = 63.4, p ≤ 0.001). This difference was not significant between the two intervention groups; nonetheless, the differences between the control and lavender oil groups, as well as the control and glycerin oil groups, were significant (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The findings showed the effectiveness of the oils through the effleurage massage for reducing RLS in a sample of hemodialysis patients.
