Effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on symptoms of premenstrual syndrome: A single-blind randomızed controlled trial

AIM

This study was carried out to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises (PMR) on premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms.

METHODS

The study was designed in a single-blind randomized controlled type. The study was conducted in a hospital in Western Türkiye. Seventy-nine single women who experienced PMS who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to the experimental group in which PMR would be applied, and the control group to continue their routine coping habits regarding PMS. PMR were applied to the experimental group every day for 8 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks, the experimental and control groups were re-evaluated with the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS).

RESULTS

At the beginning of the study, it was observed that the individual, health characteristics and PMSS mean scores of the women in the experimental and control groups were similar (p > 0.05). At the end of eight weeks, it was seen that the mean PMSS score of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). When in-group comparisons were made at the end of the exercise program, no significant difference was found in the mean PMSS score of the control group compared to the beginning (p > 0.05). The PMSS score of the experimental group decreased significantly and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

In this study, it was seen that PMR were effective in improving PMS.

Plants in Menstrual Diseases: A Systematic Study from Italian Folk Medicine on Current Approaches

Background: Plant-based remedies have been used since antiquity to treat menstrual-related diseases (MD). From the late nineteenth to the early to mid-twentieth century, Italian folk remedies to treat "women's diseases" were documented in a vast corpus of literature sources. Aim: The purpose of this paper is to bring to light the plant-based treatments utilized by Italian folk medicine to heal clinical manifestations of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and menstrual disorders in an attempt to discuss these remedies from a modern pharmacological point of view. Moreover, we compare the medical applications described by Hippocrates with those utilized by Italian folk medicine to check if they result from a sort of continuity of use by over two thousand years. Results: Out of the 54 plants employed in Italian folk medicine, 25 (46.3%) were already documented in the pharmacopoeia of the Corpus Hippocraticum for treating MD. Subsequently, a detailed search of scientific data banks such as Medline and Scopus was undertaken to uncover recent results concerning bioactivities of the plant extracts to treat MD. About 26% of the plants used by Italian folk medicine, nowadays, have undergone human trials to assess their actual efficacy. At the same time, about 41% of these herbal remedies come back to in different countries. Conclusions: Active principles extracted from plants used by Italian folk healers could be a promising source of knowledge and represent strength candidates for future drug discovery for the management of MD.

The effect of pilates and a WhatsApp-based health intervention program on symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS): A randomized controlled study

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) reduces the quality of life of young women and negatively affects their mental health and productivity. Regular physical activity and lifestyle changes are effective in alleviating and eliminating PMS symptoms. Accordingly, this randomized controlled study aims to investigate the effect of pilates and a WhatsApp-based support program on reducing PMS symptoms. A support program including pilates exercises and sending text messages was applied for 8 weeks to the students in the intervention group, and no attempt was made to the students in the control group. In this study, it was found that a support program including pilates exercise and Whatsapp text messages significantly reduced PMS symptoms.

Effects of aromatherapy on depression: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

OBJECTIVE

Non-pharmacological interventions, such as aromatherapy, have been utilized for treating depression. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of aromatherapy on depressive symptoms.

METHOD

The databases of PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from May 5, 2023, to May 20, 2023. Only randomized controlled trials that implemented aromatherapy in adults aged ≥18 years were included. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated, and subgroup analysis, meta-ANOVA, and meta-regression were performed for the moderator variables.

RESULTS

Thirty-two clinical trials (27 studies) were included in the final analysis. Aromatherapy demonstrated a moderate effect size for reducing depressive symptoms (SMD = -0.56, 95% CI: -0.69 to -0.43). Inhalation was the most effective method of delivery and blended essential oils were more effective than lavender or other single essential oils. Aromatherapy demonstrated a moderate effect size for reducing depressive symptoms among menopausal women, patients with heart disease (coronary artery disease or acute coronary syndrome), and psychological illnesses. However, it demonstrated no effect on postpartum or pregnant women. Mean age was a significant moderator variable.

CONCLUSIONS

Reliable evidence is present for the application of aromatherapy to reduce depressive symptoms, and it can be utilized effectively to decrease depressive symptoms.

Effectiveness of a school-based health education program to improve the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome in high school girls in Ilam

BACKGROUND

The premenstrual syndrome happens periodically and affects both the individual and family. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the health education program on reducing premenstrual syndrome in high school girls in Ilam.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This experimental study was conducted in girls' high schools in Ilam, in 2017-2018. In total, 120 students were enrolled in the study (intervention group = 61 and control group = 59) and selected through convenience sampling. In this study, a standard Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST) was used to diagnose students with premenstrual syndrome or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). The educational program for the intervention group was held in four sessions of 30 min for 4 consecutive weeks. The obtained data were analyzed by the SPSS statistical software at a significance level of less than 0.05.

RESULTS

The results showed a significant difference in the proportion of cases with moderate and severe PMS and PMDD between intervention and control groups in follow-up (P < 0.001). However, these proportions were not significantly different between the two groups in the baseline.

CONCLUSIONS

According to the results, the educational program can be recommended as an effective intervention for girls with moderate-to-severe premenstrual symptoms and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

The effect of aromatherapy with rose essential oil on apparent anxiety in patients with myocardial infarction

OBJECTIVES

Acute myocardial infarction (MI) and hospitalization are one of the most stressful situations for many patients. Aromatherapy is a branch of the complementary medicine that is effective in anxiety. The present study aims to determine the effect of aromatherapy with rose essential oil (REO) on apparent anxiety in patients with acute MI.

METHODS

This randomized clinical trial was carried out on patients with acute MI admitted to the cardiac ward of Heshmatieh Hospital in Sabzevar. Eighty patients were randomly assigned to two aromas and placebo groups, who received three drops of REO or placebo by inhalation three times a day for 3 days. Before and after the intervention, patients' anxiety levels were measured by the Spielberger questionnaire. Data were analyzed by chi-square and the independent and paired and t-tests.

RESULTS

Before the intervention, the mean of apparent anxiety was not significantly different in the intervention and control groups (48.44 ± 3.81 and 51.38 ± 7.21, respectively, p=0.16) while this parameter was significant after the intervention in both experimental groups (47.27 ± 7.11 and 44.16 ± 4.63, respectively, p=0.000), with a reduction in the mean of apparent anxiety in the intervention group. Moreover, the results of paired t-test revealed that the anxiety scores decreased significantly in the test group before and after the intervention (51.38 ± 7.21 and 44.16 ± 4.63, p=0.000).

CONCLUSIONS

Considering the positive effects of REO used in this study to reduce anxiety in patients with acute MI, the use of REO is recommended as a complementary treatment to reduce anxiety in these patients.

The effects of emotional freedom techniques on coping with premenstrual syndrome: A randomized control trial

PURPOSE

The present study evaluated the efficacy of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly called "tapping," for premenstrual (PMS) symptoms.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This study was conducted with the participation of 50 nursing students who scored 111 or higher on the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). The students in the experimental group were instructed to apply EFT.

FINDINGS

There were statistically significant differences between the mean depressive affect, fatigue, nervousness, sleep-related changes, and swelling subscale scores and the PMSS total scale score of the experimental group measured during the pretest and posttest (p < 0.05).

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The results demonstrate the efficacy of EFT in reducing PMS symptoms. As a fast and efficient self-treatment method, EFT can be easily implemented as a nonpharmacological intervention.

Effect of Aerobic Exercises in Improving Premenstrual Symptoms Among Healthy Women: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Background

Premenstrual symptoms in women of reproductive age are associated with substantial distress and functional impairments. A healthy lifestyle is the first step to manage premenstrual symptoms. Recreational physical activities have been recommended as an alternative to medical management in easing premenstrual symptoms.

Objective

The objective of this systematic review is to analyze the effects of aerobic exercises in improving premenstrual symptoms among healthy women.

Methods

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published from inception to February 2022, were searched using keywords in electronic databases such as, SCOPUS, PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane and web of science. RCTs published in English, comparing the effects of aerobic exercise with other interventions or controls were included. PEDro scale and Cochrane collaboration tool for risk of bias was used to assess the methodological quality of included trials. Data from the included study and the participant’s characteristics, interventions, outcome and results were extracted.

Results

Five RCTs with 492 participants were included in this systematic review. Methodological quality assessed by PEDro (4.8/10) and Cochrane collaboration tool for risk of bias were moderate. Allocation concealment, blinding of participants and outcome assessors were the most common bias in all included studies. Walking, swimming and running were the common aerobic exercises performed in the RCTs. Aerobic exercise is effective in improving physical physiological symptoms among women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

Conclusion

Aerobic exercises are effective in improving premenstrual symptoms. This review provides moderate evidence for improving hematological parameters during PMS. Further RCTs with long term follow up and quality of life would consolidate our findings.

Aromatherapy in Nursing and Midwifery Practice: A Scoping Review of Published Studies Since 2005

Background: Since the 1990's aromatherapy has been a popular adjunct to nursing and midwifery care in a variety of health care settings. Objective: The scoping review seeks to identify and confirm the benefits of incorporating aromatherapy into holistic nursing and midwifery practice Design: A scoping review using PRISMA-ScR of experimental studies where care is provided to the patient by a registered nurse or midwife. Settings and participants: Any health care setting where nurses or midwives provide care. Review Methods: A multi- engine search using a range of MeSH and non-MeSH terms with the Boolean search [AND]. Inclusion criteria were; publication date from 2005-2021, study involved aromatherapy as an intervention, conducted in a clinical nursing or midwifery environment and the published article is available in full in English. Excluded were; single patient cases, animal studies, in vitro studies, use of essential oils internally or a whole plant extract was used or use was non-nursing/midwifery related. Results: 124 studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 19188), classified into seven themes. Conclusion: The evidence supports the use of aromatherapy within a range of nursing and midwifery practices enhancing a holistic model of care. Impact: This scoping review contributes evidence to support the inclusion of aromatherapy into holistic nursing and midwifery practice.

The Effect of Aromatherapy Alone or in Combination with Massage on Dysmenorrhea: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

 The aim of the present systematic review meta-analysis is to assess the effect of olfactory stimulation on reducing dysmenorrhea. METHODS:  Systematic search was conducted in several databases, such as PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus, to identify relevant research up to October 26, 2019. The identified studies were evaluated based on a modified Jadad scale. The intervention involves aromatherapy alone or in combination with essential oils. There was no restriction for the control group such as a placebo group or other common treatments. The Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Version 2 (Bio stat, Englewood, NJ, USA) was used for meta-analysis. Cochran's Q and I2 tests were utilized.

RESULTS

 The findings of our meta-analysis, which contained 13 trials (15 data), showed that dysmenorrhea decreased significantly in the group receiving aromatherapy with herbal compared with the control group (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.795; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.922 to- 0.667; 17 trials O < 0.001); heterogeneity; I2 = 19.47%; p = 0.236). In addition, four studies with insufficient data were not included in our meta-analysis. The results of all studies suggested that aromatherapy with herbal medicine group compared with control group is effective.

CONCLUSION

 Aromatherapy with herbal medicine decreased dysmenorrhea. This treatment was particularly effective when aroma oil was combined with massage or when a mixture of aroma oil was used for the treatment of dysmenorrhea.

Lavender Aromatherapy to Reduce Anxiety During Intrauterine Insemination: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Background

Infertility is a global public health issue. Therapies such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) are effective but may be associated with considerable anxiety. Preliminary data suggest that decreasing this anxiety might lead to improved outcomes.

Objective

To determine whether lavender aromatherapy (LA) reduces anxiety during an IUI procedure.

Methods

A randomized controlled trial of women undergoing IUI at a hospital-based fertility clinic. The intervention and comparison were the use of LA vs water. Measurements were the change in anxiety level during an IUI procedure, with secondary assessment of pain scores, patient satisfaction, and pregnancy rates.

Results

In total, 67 women were screened, and 62 women randomly assigned to either placebo (n = 31) or LA (n = 31). No differences were observed in baseline demographic characteristics or visual analog scores for anxiety before IUI (mean [95% CI], 33.9 [25.2 to 45.6] mm vs 41.0 [33.0 to 49.0] mm) in the LA and placebo groups. However, a statistically significant change in anxiety was observed after LA inhalation during the procedure (mean [95% CI], −11.2 [−19.1 to −3.2]) compared with placebo (mean [95% CI], 1.3 [−5.6 to 8.2]; P = .02). No significant difference was observed in pain during IUI in the LA group vs placebo group. Patient satisfaction was high, with 93% of respondents in the LA group satisfied with the aromatherapy during their procedure. Additionally, 76% of participants who received placebo reported that they would prefer to use LA during their IUI. No statistically significant difference was detected in pregnancy rates between the 2 groups: 19.4% with LA vs 9.7% with placebo (P = .47).

Conclusion

LA reduced anxiety and was preferred by women during IUI fertility treatments.

Essential Oils: Pharmaceutical Applications and Encapsulation Strategies into Lipid-Based Delivery Systems

Essential oils are being studied for more than 60 years, but a growing interest has emerged in the recent decades due to a desire for a rediscovery of natural remedies. Essential oils are known for millennia and, already in prehistoric times, they were used for medicinal and ritual purposes due to their therapeutic properties. Using a variety of methods refined over the centuries, essential oils are extracted from plant raw materials: the choice of the extraction method is decisive, since it determines the type, quantity, and stereochemical structure of the essential oil molecules. To these components belong all properties that make essential oils so interesting for pharmaceutical uses; the most investigated ones are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing, and anxiolytic activities. However, the main limitations to their use are their hydrophobicity, instability, high volatility, and risk of toxicity. A successful strategy to overcome these limitations is the encapsulation within delivery systems, which enable the increase of essential oils bioavailability and improve their chemical stability, while reducing their volatility and toxicity. Among all the suitable platforms, our review focused on the lipid-based ones, in particular micro- and nanoemulsions, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers.

The antidepressant effects of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.): A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Antidepressant drugs are accompanied with high rate of adverse effects. Lavender is one of the most common herbal drugs mentioned in Traditional Persian literature with potential efficacy on mental disorders and less serious side effects. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of lavender on depression severity by preforming a systematic review and meta-analysis.

METHODS

Databases including PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane library, Embase and Web of science were searched for relevant articles till December 2020. Quality of studies were evaluated by Jadad scale and the Cochrane collaboration tool. Depression as endpoint measure or as a subscale of any valid assessment tool was subjected to quantitative data analyses. Both fixed and random effects meta-analysis were conducted for data synthesis.

RESULTS

Out of 342 screened studies, 17 articles were included in the meta-analysis. Results showed significant efficacy of lavender in decreasing depression scores compared to the control group (pooled Standardized Mean Difference (SMD)= -0.66, 95 % CI: -0.85 to -0.46;P < 0.001, I² = 68.2 %;). Subgroup analysis proved that the effect of lavender was marginally more pronounced in participants with diagnosed depression (pooled SMD= -0.62, 95 % CI: -1.26 to 0.01, P = 0.055; I² = 88.1 %) while its effect was statistically significant in patients having other diseases with concomitant depressive symptoms (pooled SMD= -0.65, 95 % CI: -1.84 to -0.46, P < 0.001; I² = 52.1 %), and the oral route (pooled SMD= -0.56, 95 % CI: -1.07 to -0.05, P = 0.032; I² = 85.2 %;) was the most effective route of administration.

CONCLUSIONS

This systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that lavender has significant antidepressant effects. However, due to some limitations, further large clinical trials are recommended with more homogeneous populations and rigorous designs.

The Effects of Aromatherapy on Premenstrual Syndrome Symptoms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

ObjectivesPremenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common disturbance among women of childbearing age. Aromatherapy is a commonly used form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat PMS. The purpose of this study is to quantify and summarize the effects of aromatherapy on premenstrual syndrome symptoms. Methods. PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were searched through relevant search terms until October 2020. The effect sizes were pooled as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) using the random effect model. Egger tests and visual inspection of the funnel plot were performed to identify the existence of publication bias. The I-squared (I²) test was applied to measure heterogeneity. Results. Eight studies (n = 8) were included in this analysis. The quantitative synthesis of evidence found that aromatherapy decreases PMS scores (WMD –13.83; 95% CI (−22.04, −5.63), I² = 94.5%), total psychological symptoms of PMS (WMD –3.51; 95% CI (−4.84, −2.18), I² = 82.6%), anxiety of PMS (WMD–1.78; 95% CI (−3.17, −0.38), I² = 94.2%), depression of PMS (WMD–2.0; 95% CI (−3.65, −0.34), I² = 93.7%), and fatigue of PMS (WMD – 1.44; 95% CI (−2.44, −0.44), I² = 89.7%) compared to the control group. Conclusion. Aromatherapy is an effective tool for the relief of PMS symptoms. Additional randomized controlled clinical trials with different durations and essential oils should be conducted to confirm our findings.

Effects of essential oils on central nervous system: Focus on mental health

Essential oils have been used as remedies since ancient times for the treatment of numerous illnesses on account of their wide range of biological activities. Recent preclinical and clinical studies have shown varying pharmacological responses in the nervous system leading to anxiolytic, antidepressant, sedative, and anticonvulsant effects. Experimentation in animal models has evidenced the involvement of multiple neurotransmitter systems in the mode of action of essential oils, resulting in measurable physiological effects in the brain. Additionally, clinical trials have demonstrated the influence of essential oils in physiological parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, brain waves composition, and cortisol serum levels with concomitant psychological effects. Although there is growing evidence of measurable effects of essential oils in animal brains, more clinical research is required to validate their influence in the human central nervous system. This will enable the development of essential oil-based drugs for the treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and dementia.

The chloroplasts genomic analyses of Rosa laevigata, R. rugosa and R. canina

Background

Many species of the genus Rosa have been used as ornamental plants and traditional medicines. However, industrial development of roses is hampered due to highly divergent characteristics.

Methods

We analyzed the chloroplast (cp) genomes of Rosa laevigata, R. rugosa and R. canina, including the repeat sequences, inverted-repeat (IR) contractions and expansions, and mutation sites.

Results

The size of the cp genome of R. laevigata, R. rugosa and R. canina was between 156 333 bp and 156 533 bp, and contained 113 genes (30 tRNA genes, 4 rRNA genes and 79 protein-coding genes). The regions with a higher degree of variation were screened out (trnH-GUU, trnS-GCU, trnG-GCC, psbA-trnH, trnC-GCA,petN, trnT-GGU, psbD, petA, psbJ, ndhF, rpl32,psaC and ndhE). Such higher-resolution loci lay the foundation of barcode-based identification of cp genomes in Rosa genus. A phylogenetic tree of the genus Rosa was reconstructed using the full sequences of the cp genome. These results were largely in accordance with the current taxonomic status of Rosa.

Conclusions

Our data: (i) reveal that cp genomes can be used for the identification and classification of Rosa species; (ii) can aid studies on molecular identification, genetic transformation, expression of secondary metabolic pathways and resistant proteins; (iii) can lay a theoretical foundation for the discovery of disease-resistance genes and cultivation of Rosa species.

Effects of lavender on anxiety: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Anxiety is one of the uprising psychiatric disorders of the last decades and lavender administration has been traditionally suggested as a possible treatment. The objective of this review is to assess the efficacy of lavender, in any form and way of administration, on anxiety and anxiety-related conditions.

METHODS

The PRISMA guidelines were followed. Retrieved data were qualitatively and quantitatively synthesized. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and Non-Randomized Studies (NRSs) which investigated the efficacy of lavender, in any form and way of administration, on patients with anxiety, involved in anxiety-inducing settings or undergoing anxiety-inducing activities, compared to any type of control, without language restrictions, were identified through electronic database searches. Medline via PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google Scholar were systematically searched. All databases were screened up to November 2018. Risk of bias was assessed with the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the following domains were considered: randomization, allocation sequence concealment, blinding, incomplete outcome data, selective outcome reporting, and other biases.

RESULTS

65 RCTs (7993 participants) and 25 NRSs (1200 participants) were included in the qualitative synthesis and 37 RCTs (3964 participants) were included in the quantitative synthesis. Overall, the qualitative synthesis indicated that 54 RCTs and 17 NRSs reported at least a significant result in favor of lavender use for anxiety. The quantitative synthesis showed that lavender inhalation can significantly reduce anxiety levels measured with any validated scale (Hedges' g = -0.73 [95% CI -1.00 to -0.46], p < 0.00001, 1682 participants), as well as state anxiety (Spielberger's state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI)-State mean difference = -5.99 [95% CI -9.39 to -2.59], p < 0.001, 901 participants) and trait anxiety (STAI-Trait mean difference = -8.14 [95% CI -14.44 to -1.84], p < 0.05, 196 participants). Lavender inhalation did not show a significant effect in reducing systolic blood pressure as a physiological parameter of anxiety. A significant effect in diminishing anxiety levels was also found in favor of the use of oral Silexan® 80 mg/die for at least 6 weeks (Hamilton Anxiety Scale mean difference = -2.90 [95% CI -4.86 to -0.95], p = 0.004, 1173 participants; Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale mean difference = -2.62 [95% CI -4.84 to -0.39], p < 0.05, 451 participants) or of the administration of massage with lavender oil (Hedges' g = -0.66 [95% CI -0.97 to -0.35], p < 0.0001, 448 participants).

DISCUSSION

The most important limitation of this review is the low average quality of available studies on the topic. The majority of included RCTs were characterized by a high overall risk of bias. Another limitation regards the heterogeneity of study designs, especially with regard to non-oral ways of administration. Overall, oral administration of lavender essential oil proves to be effective in the treatment of anxiety, whereas for inhalation there is only an indication of an effect of reasonable size, due to the heterogeneity of available studies. Lavender essential oil administered through massage appears effective, but available studies are not sufficient to determine whether the benefit is due to a specific effect of lavender. Further high-quality RCTs with more homogeneous study designs are needed to confirm these findings. Available information outlines a safe profile for lavender-based interventions, although more attention should be paid to the collection and reporting of safety data in future studies. Considering these findings, since treatments with lavender essential oil generally seem safe, and, in the case of inhalation, also simple and inexpensive, they are a therapeutic option which may be considered in some clinical contexts.

How Strong is the Evidence for the Anxiolytic Efficacy of Lavender?: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

PURPOSE

Although lavender is purported to possess anxiolytic and sedative properties and is often recommended for relieving anxiety, the efficacy of lavender has not been well established. Thus, this review aimed to evaluate the anxiolytic effects of lavender aromatherapy.

METHODS

Ten data bases were searched for studies published between 2000 and 2018. Randomized controlled trials investigating the anxiolytic effects of lavender aromatherapy with any type of application for persons with or without clinical anxiety were included. The outcome variables included self-rated anxiety, vital signs, and salivary cortisol and chromogranin A (CgA) levels. In the meta-analysis, standardized mean difference and 95% confidence interval were calculated as effect measures by applying the random effect model and inverse variance method.

RESULTS

Twenty-two trials met our inclusion criteria. Lavender aromatherapy was found to have favorable effects in relieving anxiety (Hedges' ĝ = -0.65; 95% CI, -0.84 to -0.46) and decreasing systolic blood pressure (ĝ = -0.22; 95% CI, -0.43 to -0.02), heart rate (ĝ = -0.53; 95% CI, -0.74 to -0.32), and salivary cortisol (ĝ = -1.29; 95% CI, -2.23 to -0.35) and CgA (ĝ = -2.29; 95% CI, -3.24 to -1.34) levels. However, the meta-analysis did not reveal any significant effects of lavender on diastolic blood pressure (effect size: -0.17; 95% CI, -0.37-0.04).

CONCLUSION

Aromatherapy using lavender oil might have favorable effects on anxiety and its physiological manifestations. Future studies are recommended with an emphasis on methodological quality. In nursing practice, it is suggested that lavender aromatherapy be included in programs intended to manage anxiety in patients across diverse healthcare settings.

The effect of aromatherapy on mental, physical symptoms, and social functions of females with premenstrual syndrome: A randomized clinical trial

Objective:

This study was designed to compare the effect of aromatherapy with Rosa Damascena and Citrus Aurantium blossom on psychological and physical symptoms and social functions of females with premenstrual syndrome.

Materials and Methods:

This double-blind clinical trial was conducted on 95 students. They were randomly divided into three aromatherapy groups (aromatherapy with 4% concentration of Rosa Damascena and 0.5% concentration of Citrus Aurantium blossom essential oil) and aromatherapy with sweet almond oil (as control group). Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool questionnaire (PSST) was completed before and during the first and second month of the intervention. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 22.

Results:

After intervention, the scores of mental symptoms decreased in all three groups and this decrease was significant in both Citrus Aurantium (P = 0.004) and Rosa Damascena groups (P = 0.007). The score of physical symptoms was decreased in all three groups but it was significant only in the Rosa Demecensa group (P = 0.042). The reduction of effect of symptoms on social function was observed in two intervention groups which were significant only in Rosa Damascena group (P < 0.001).

Conclusion:

Essential oils of Rosa Damascena and Citrus Aurantium were both effective in improving the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome but the effect of Rosa Damascena, with regard to improvement of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome was more than that of Citrus Aurantium in all psychological, physical, and social aspects.
