Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of batroxobin on hearing recovery in patients with Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) is still controversial, and acupuncture shows auxiliary benefits for SSNHL. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effectiveness of combining acupuncture with batroxobin therapy for patients with SSNHL. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and fifty-six patients with SSNHL were retrospectively enrolled in this study, and categorized into the control group (only batroxobin treatment) and observation group (batroxobin and acupuncture treatment). Pure Tone Audiograms (PTA) threshold and clinical outcomes of hearing recovery were compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between hearing recovery and potential risk factors. RESULTS Compared to the control group, the observation group had a higher overall effective rate (p = 0.006) and improvement in PTA threshold (p = 0.007). Among SSNHL patients with high-frequency and flat-type hearing loss, observation group demonstrated superior hearing recovery post-treatment compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, hearing recovery in patient with SSNHL were associated with SSNHL types, disease duration, neutrophil count and acupuncture (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE Combining batroxobin and acupuncture treatments enhences the improvement of hearing recovery in SSNHL patients compared to only batroxobin treatments, especially high-frequency and flat-type hearing loss.

Abstract
PURPOSE Hearing loss is a frequently observed comorbidity in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Accumulating evidence demonstrated that acupuncture can safely manage cancer and its treatment-related symptoms, but its effect in minimizing the likelihood of experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) has not been established. So this work aimed to determine the risk of SSHL among NPC persons with or without acupuncture use. METHODS One population-level, nested case-control design within a cohort study is employed. Relevant information on persons aged 20-80 years who were afflicted with NPC between 2000 and 2010 was extracted from a nationwide health claims database. From them, we identified the cases who had the first SSHL diagnosis occurring after NPC, and all of them were randomly matched to two controls without SSHL. Conditional logistic regression was employed to calculate odds ratios (OR) and its respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incident SSHL in relation to acupuncture treatment. RESULTS Eight hundred eleven SSHL cases were randomly matched to 1452 controls. Those receiving conventional care plus acupuncture use had a reduced adjusted OR of 0.39 (95% CI, 0.25-0.60) for SSHL. We further discovered that the longer usage of acupuncture remarkably correlated with reduction of SSHL risk in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS Delineation of the benefit from integration of acupuncture into conventional care may be a reference in instituting more appropriate care for NPC subjects. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Patients living with NPC may benefit from a timely integration of acupuncture into routine care to lessen SSHL risk.

Abstract
Bacckground: Approximately 80% to 85% of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is idiopathic, but immune-mediated mechanisms are thought to be involved. Behçet disease is an autoinflammatory vasculitis that may involve vessels of the inner ear. It can cause sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and an increased risk of SSNHL. Study Sample: We report a 21-year-old man who was diagnosed with Behçet disease in childhood and presented to our clinic with a 10-day history of abrupt hearing deterioration in both ears. Pure-tone audiometry showed severe to profound bilateral SNHL. Results: Oral prednisolone was prescribed for 3 weeks. Concurrent intratympanic steroid injections (ITSIs) were administered in each ear every 2 days for 5 days. A total of 15 daily sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) were completed. Acupuncture was performed every 2 days for 1 month. After these combined therapies, the patient's hearing threshold by 20 dB and his speech recognition threshold were improved. Conclusions: Some patients with SSNHL recover no hearing improvement after routine treatment, and alternative treatments including ITSI, HBOT, and acupuncture can be considered as optional. We used an aggressive multimodal approach to treat severe bilateral SSNHL in patient with Behçet disease.

Abstract
Adult sudden-onset unilateral sensorineural hearing loss is primarily idiopathic. There are few treatment options with high success rates, but the literature suggests there is equally moderate success with oral or intratympanic steroids, with some evidence to support the use of acupuncture as a salvage treatment. Here, we present a case of sudden unilateral sensorineural hearing loss with otolaryngology evaluation and audiograms before and after osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). Osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine (OCMM) directed at eustachian tube dysfunction elicited findings indicating resolution of symptoms was at least partly due to cranial treatment. This report explains a probable anatomic mechanism contributing to hearing loss and suggests treatment options that should be considered as part of the treatment of idiopathic unilateral hearing loss. Future research opportunities are also proposed.

Abstract
Migraine headaches frequently coexist with vestibular symptoms such as vertigo, motion sickness, and gait instability. Migraine-related vasospasm can also damage the inner ear, which results in symptoms such as sudden sensorineural hearing loss and resultant tinnitus. The pathophysiology of these symptoms is not yet fully understood, and despite their prevalence, there is no universally approved management. This review summarizes the data on complementary and integrative medicine in treating patients with migrainous ear disorders.

Abstract
Objectives: Acupuncture, widely used in Chinese society, has been studied as an adjunct treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of combined acupuncture and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) with conventional steroid therapy for ISSNHL. Methods: This retrospective chart review enrolled 154 patients who met the ISSNHL criteria and were categorized into three groups according to the different treatment regimens. Among these patients, 43 underwent steroid therapy only (S) group, 74 received steroid and HBOT (S-H) group, and the remaining 37 were treated with combined acupuncture-HBOT in addition to steroid therapy (S-H-A) group. The outcome was determined by comparing the differences in pure-tone thresholds and absolute hearing gains after treatment calculated at each audiometric octave frequency or grouped frequencies of audiograms. Hearing recoveries classified into three grades: complete, partial, and poor were also analyzed and compared among different treatment groups. Results: All subjects presented with initial severe hearing loss with averaged hearing thresholds >70 dB. The S-H-A group exhibited good hearing improvement outcomes at each audiometric octave frequency and grouped frequencies of audiograms, with greater hearing gain and had more favorable outcomes in hearing recovery grades compared with the S group and the S-H group. Conclusions: The results obtained in this study revealed a preliminary finding of ISSNHL patients benefiting from combined acupuncture, HBOT, and conventional steroid therapy. Acupuncture is a safe and nonpharmacologic treatment option and can be considered as an initial treatment strategy in such a clinical scenario.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has minimal side effects, is cost-effective, can be easily administered, and may serve as a useful non-pharmaceutical therapy for certain conditions. However, studies and clinical practice guidelines are inconsistent in conclusions and recommendations about acupuncture. This qualitative review addresses the evidence available for acupuncture use in otolaryngology. METHODS A literature review was completed using EMBASE, PubMed, and The Cochrane Collection for conditions within otolaryngology that have used and studied the comparative effects of acupuncture. Thirty studies ultimately fit the inclusion criteria and were used for this qualitative review. RESULTS Studies included in this review contained a variety of conditions within otolaryngology, including allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis, tinnitus, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, post-viral olfactory dysfunction, dysphonia, and tonsillectomies. CONCLUSION Given its safety profile, cost, and perceived benefit, recommendations and guidelines supporting acupuncture as an alternative or adjunctive therapy are surfacing for certain conditions such as allergic rhinitis. However, stronger conclusions with specific recommendations are limited by varied methodology between majority of the studies. Additional high-quality randomized control studies with low risk of bias are required to continue to assess the effects of acupuncture in the field of otolaryngology before stronger recommendations can be made on other conditions.
