Abstract
Humans and other animals can readily learn to compensate for changes in the dynamics of movement. Such changes can result from an injury or changes in the weight of carried objects. These changes in dynamics can lead not only to reduced performance but also to dramatic instabilities. We evaluated the impacts of compensatory changes in control policies in relation to stability and robustness in Eigenmannia virescens, a species of weakly electric fish. We discovered that these fish retune their sensorimotor control system in response to experimentally generated destabilizing dynamics. Specifically, we used an augmented reality system to manipulate sensory feedback during an image stabilization task in which a fish maintained its position within a refuge. The augmented reality system measured the fish's movements in real time. These movements were passed through a high-pass filter and multiplied by a gain factor before being fed back to the refuge motion. We adjusted the gain factor to gradually destabilize the fish's sensorimotor loop. The fish retuned their sensorimotor control system to compensate for the experimentally induced destabilizing dynamics. This retuning was partially maintained when the augmented reality feedback was abruptly removed. The compensatory changes in sensorimotor control improved tracking performance as well as control-theoretic measures of robustness, including reduced sensitivity to disturbances and improved phase margins.

Abstract
There is an increasing need to implement neuromorphic systems that are both energetically and computationally efficient. There is also great interest in using electric elements with memory, memelements, that can implement complex neuronal functions intrinsically. A feature not widely incorporated in neuromorphic systems is history-dependent action potential time adaptation which is widely seen in real cells. Previous theoretical work shows that power-law history dependent spike time adaptation, seen in several brain areas and species, can be modeled with fractional order differential equations. Here, we show that fractional order spiking neurons can be implemented using super-capacitors. The super-capacitors have fractional order derivative and memcapacitive properties. We implemented two circuits, a leaky integrate and fire and a Hodgkin-Huxley. Both circuits show power-law spiking time adaptation and optimal coding properties. The spiking dynamics reproduced previously published computer simulations. However, the fractional order Hodgkin-Huxley circuit showed novel dynamics consistent with criticality. We compared the responses of this circuit to recordings from neurons in the weakly-electric fish that have previously been shown to perform fractional order differentiation of their sensory input. The criticality seen in the circuit was confirmed in spontaneous recordings in the live fish. Furthermore, the circuit also predicted long-lasting stimulation that was also corroborated experimentally. Our work shows that fractional order memcapacitors provide intrinsic memory dependence that could allow implementation of computationally efficient neuromorphic devices. Memcapacitors are static elements that consume less energy than the most widely studied memristors, thus allowing the realization of energetically efficient neuromorphic devices.

Abstract
When a neuron breaks silence, it can emit action potentials in a number of patterns. Some responses are so sudden and intense that electrophysiologists felt the need to single them out, labelling action potentials emitted at a particularly high frequency with a metonym - bursts. Is there more to bursts than a figure of speech? After all, sudden bouts of high-frequency firing are expected to occur whenever inputs surge. The burst coding hypothesis advances that the neural code has three syllables: silences, spikes and bursts. We review evidence supporting this ternary code in terms of devoted mechanisms for burst generation, synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity. We also review the learning and attention theories for which such a triad is beneficial.

Abstract
Internal models that predict the sensory consequences of motor actions are vital for sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. However, the relationship between motor action and sensory input is complex, often varying from one moment to another depending on the state of the animal and the environment. The neural mechanisms for generating predictions under such challenging, real-world conditions remain largely unknown. Using novel methods for underwater neural recording, a quantitative analysis of unconstrained behavior, and computational modeling, we provide evidence for an unexpectedly sophisticated internal model at the first stage of active electrosensory processing in mormyrid fish. Closed-loop manipulations reveal that electrosensory lobe neurons are capable of simultaneously learning and storing multiple predictions of the sensory consequences of motor commands specific to different sensory states. These results provide mechanistic insights into how internal motor signals and information about the sensory environment are combined within a cerebellum-like circuitry to predict the sensory consequences of natural behavior.

Abstract
The functional role of heterogeneous spiking responses of otherwise similarly tuned neurons to stimulation, which has been observed ubiquitously, remains unclear to date. Here, we demonstrate that such response heterogeneity serves a beneficial function that is used by downstream brain areas to generate behavioral responses that follows the detailed timecourse of the stimulus. Multi-unit recordings from sensory pyramidal cells within the electrosensory system of Apteronotus leptorhynchus were performed and revealed highly heterogeneous responses that were similar for all cell types. By comparing the coding properties of a given neural population before and after inactivation of descending pathways, we found that heterogeneities were beneficial as decoding was then more robust to the addition of noise. Taken together, our results not only reveal that descending pathways actively promote response heterogeneity within a given cell type, but also uncover a beneficial function for such heterogeneity that is used by the brain to generate behavior.

Abstract
Animals possess senses which gather information from their environment. They can tune into important aspects of this information and decide on the most appropriate response, requiring coordination of their sensory and motor systems. This interaction is bidirectional. Animals can actively shape their perception with self-driven motion, altering sensory flow to maximise the environmental information they are able to extract. Mormyrid fish are excellent candidates for studying sensory-motor interactions, because they possess a unique sensory system (the active electric sense) and exhibit notable behaviours that seem to be associated with electrosensing. This review will take a behavioural approach to unpicking this relationship, using active electrolocation as an example where body movements and sensing capabilities are highly related and can be assessed in tandem. Active electrolocation is the process where individuals will generate and detect low-voltage electric fields to locate and recognise nearby objects. We will focus on research in the mormyrid Gnathonemus petersii (G. petersii), given the extensive study of this species, particularly its object recognition abilities. By studying object detection and recognition, we can assess the potential benefits of self-driven movements to enhance selection of biologically relevant information. Finally, these findings are highly relevant to understanding the involvement of movement in shaping the sensory experience of animals that use other sensory modalities. Understanding the overlap between sensory and motor systems will give insight into how different species have become adapted to their environments.

Abstract
Understanding how neural populations encode sensory stimuli remains a central problem in neuroscience. Here we performed multi-unit recordings from sensory neural populations in the electrosensory system of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus in response to stimuli located at different positions along the rostro-caudal axis. Our results reveal that the spatial dependence of correlated activity along receptive fields can help mitigate the deleterious effects that these correlations would otherwise have if they were spatially independent. Moreover, using mathematical modeling, we show that experimentally observed heterogeneities in the receptive fields of neurons help optimize information transmission as to object location. Taken together, our results have important implications for understanding how sensory neurons whose receptive fields display antagonistic center-surround organization encode location. Important similarities between the electrosensory system and other sensory systems suggest that our results will be applicable elsewhere.

Abstract
This article introduces and tests a simple model that describes a neural network found in nature, the electrosensory control of an electromotor pacemaker. The cornerstone of the model is an early-stage filter based on the subtraction of a feedforward integrated version of the recent sensory past from the present input signal. The output of this filter governs the modulation of a premotor pacemaker command driving the sensory signal carrier generation and, in consequence, the timing of subsequent electrosensory input. This early filter has a biological parallel in the known connectivity of the first electrosensory relay within the brain stem of the weakly electric fish Gymnotus omarorum. Our biomimetic model of this active, perception-driven action-sensation cycle was contrasted with previously published and here provided new data. When the amplitude of the electrosensory input was manipulated to mimic previous experiments on the novelty detection characteristics, the model reproduces them rather faithfully. In addition, when we applied continuous variations to the input it shows that increases in stimulus amplitudes are followed by increases in the EOD rate, but decreases do not cause rate modulation suggesting a rectification in some stage of the loop. These behavioral experiments confirmed results generated the simulations suggesting that beyond explaining the novelty detection process this simple model is a good description of the electrosensory -electromotor loop in pulse weakly electric fish.

Abstract
Discriminating small moving objects within complex visual environments is a significant challenge for autonomous micro-robots that are generally limited in computational power. By exploiting their highly evolved visual systems, flying insects can effectively detect mates and track prey during rapid pursuits, even though the small targets equate to only a few pixels in their visual field. The high degree of sensitivity to small target movement is supported by a class of specialized neurons called small target motion detectors (STMDs). Existing STMD-based computational models normally comprise four sequentially arranged neural layers interconnected via feedforward loops to extract information on small target motion from raw visual inputs. However, feedback, another important regulatory circuit for motion perception, has not been investigated in the STMD pathway and its functional roles for small target motion detection are not clear. In this article, we propose an STMD-based neural network with feedback connection (feedback STMD), where the network output is temporally delayed, then fed back to the lower layers to mediate neural responses. We compare the properties of the model with and without the time-delay feedback loop and find that it shows a preference for high-velocity objects. Extensive experiments suggest that the feedback STMD achieves superior detection performance for fast-moving small targets, while significantly suppressing background false positive movements which display lower velocities. The proposed feedback model provides an effective solution in robotic visual systems for detecting fast-moving small targets that are always salient and potentially threatening.

Abstract
The pulse emitting weakly electric fish Gymnotus omarorum shows stereotyped "novelty responses" consisting of a transient acceleration of the rhythm of a self-emitted electric organ discharge that carries electrosensory signals. Here we show that rapid increases in electric image amplitude cause a "novelty detection potential" in the first electrosensory relay. This sign precedes and its amplitude predicts, the amplitude of the subsequent behavioral novelty response. Current source density analyses indicates its origin ar the layers of the electrosensory lobe where the main output neurons occur. Two types of units, referred to as "ON" and "OFF". Were recorded there in decerebrated fish. Firing probability of "OFF" units drastically decreased after a stepwise increase in electric image. By contrast, the very first novel stimuli after the increase evoked a sharp peak in firing rate of "ON" units followed by a very fast adaptation phase that contrasted with the slow adaptation observed in previous recordings of primary afferents. The amplitudes of this peak, the novelty detection potential, and the behavioral novelty responses, show the same dependence on the departure of the newest stimulus intensity from the weighted average of preceding ones suggesting that the signals encoded by "ON" neurons underlay the novelty detection potential, propagates through the hierarchical organization of the electromotor control, and finally contribute to accelerate the electric organ discharge rate. This suggests that detecting novelty at the very early processing stage of electrosensory signals is essential to adapt the electrosensory sampling rate to exploration requirements as they change dynamically.

Abstract
Building an efficient and reliable small target motion detection visual system is challenging for artificial intelligence robotics because a small target only occupies few pixels and hardly displays visual features in images. Biological visual systems that have evolved over millions of years could be ideal templates for designing artificial visual systems. Insects benefit from a class of specialized neurons, called small target motion detectors (STMDs), which endow them with an excellent ability to detect small moving targets against a cluttered dynamic environment. Some bio-inspired models featured in feed-forward information processing architectures have been proposed to imitate the functions of the STMD neurons. However, feedback, a crucial mechanism for visual system regulation, has not been investigated deeply in the STMD-based neural circuits and its roles in small target motion detection remain unclear. In this paper, we propose a time-delay feedback STMD model for small target motion detection in complex backgrounds. The main contributions of this study are as follows. First, a feedback pathway is designed by transmitting information from output-layer neurons to lower-layer interneurons in the STMD pathway and the role of the feedback is analyzed from the view of mathematical analysis. Second, to estimate the feedback constant, the existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlinear dynamical systems formed by feedback loop are analyzed via Schauder's fixed point theorem and contraction mapping theorem. Finally, an iterative algorithm is designed to solve the nonlinear problem and the performance of the proposed model is tested by experiments. Experimental results demonstrate that the feedback is able to weaken background false positives while maintaining a minor effect on small targets. It outperforms existing STMD-based models regarding the accuracy of fast-moving small target detection in visual clutter. The proposed feedback approach could inspire the relevant modeling of robust motion perception robotics visual systems.

Abstract
Weakly electric fish can learn the spatial layout of their environment using only their short-range electric sense. During spatial learning, active sensing motions are used to memorize landmark locations so that they can serve as anchors for idiothetic-based navigation. A hindbrain feedback circuit selectively amplifies the electrosensory input arising from these motions. The ascending electrolocation pathway preferentially transmits this information to the pallial regions involved in spatial learning and navigation. Similarities in both behavioral patterns and hindbrain circuitry of gymnotiform and mormyrid fish, two families that independently evolved their electrosense, suggest that amplification and transmission of active sensing motion inputs are fundamental mechanisms for spatial memory acquisition.

Abstract
Understanding how the brain decodes sensory information to give rise to behaviour remains an important problem in systems neuroscience. Across various sensory modalities (e.g. auditory, visual), the time-varying contrast of natural stimuli has been shown to carry behaviourally relevant information. However, it is unclear how such information is actually decoded by the brain to evoke perception and behaviour. Here we investigated how midbrain electrosensory neurons respond to weak contrasts in the electrosensory system of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. We found that these neurons displayed lower detection thresholds than their afferent hindbrain electrosensory neurons. Further analysis revealed that the lower detection thresholds of midbrain neurons were not due to increased sensitivity to the stimulus. Rather, these were due to the fact that midbrain neurons displayed lower variability in their firing activities in the absence of stimulation, which is due to lower firing rates. Our results suggest that midbrain neurons play an active role towards enabling the detection of weak stimulus contrasts, which in turn leads to perception and behavioral responses.

Abstract
Acetylcholine acts as a neurotransmitter/neuromodulator of many central nervous system processes such as learning and memory, attention, motor control, and sensory processing. The present study describes the spatial distribution of cholinergic neurons throughout the brain of the weakly electric fish, Apteronotus leptorhynchus, using in situ hybridization of choline acetyltransferase mRNA. Distinct groups of cholinergic cells were observed in the telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, and hindbrain. These included cholinergic cell groups typically identified in other vertebrate brains, for example, motor neurons. Using both in vitro and ex vivo neuronal tracing methods, we identified two new cholinergic connections leading to novel hypotheses on their functional significance. Projections to the nucleus praeeminentialis (nP) arise from isthmic nuclei, possibly including the nucleus lateralis valvulae (nLV) and the isthmic nucleus (nI). The nP is a central component of all electrosensory feedback pathways to the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL). We have previously shown that some neurons in nP, TS, and tectum express muscarinic receptors. We hypothesize that, based on nLV/nI cell responses in other teleosts and isthmic connectivity in A. leptorhynchus, the isthmic connections to nP, TS, and tectum modulate responses to electrosensory and/or visual motion and, in particular, to looming/receding stimuli. In addition, we found that the octavolateral efferent (OE) nucleus is the likely source of cholinergic fibers innervating the ELL. In other teleosts, OE inhibits octavolateral hair cells during locomotion. In gymnotiform fish, OE may also act on the first central processing stage and, we hypothesize, implement corollary discharge modulation of electrosensory processing during locomotion.

Abstract
While animals track or search for targets, sensory organs make small unexplained movements on top of the primary task-related motions. While multiple theories for these movements exist-in that they support infotaxis, gain adaptation, spectral whitening, and high-pass filtering-predicted trajectories show poor fit to measured trajectories. We propose a new theory for these movements called energy-constrained proportional betting, where the probability of moving to a location is proportional to an expectation of how informative it will be balanced against the movement's predicted energetic cost. Trajectories generated in this way show good agreement with measured trajectories of fish tracking an object using electrosense, a mammal and an insect localizing an odor source, and a moth tracking a flower using vision. Our theory unifies the metabolic cost of motion with information theory. It predicts sense organ movements in animals and can prescribe sensor motion for robots to enhance performance.

Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms by which neuronal population activity gives rise to perception and behavior remains a central question in systems neuroscience. Such understanding is complicated by the fact that natural stimuli often have complex structure. Here we investigated how heterogeneities within a sensory neuron population influence the coding of a noisy stimulus waveform (i.e., the noise) and its behaviorally relevant envelope signal (i.e., the signal). We found that On- and Off-type neurons displayed more heterogeneities in their responses to the noise than in their responses to the signal. These differences in heterogeneities had important consequences when quantifying response similarity between pairs of neurons. Indeed, the larger response heterogeneity displayed by On- and Off-type neurons made their pairwise responses to the noise on average more independent than when instead considering pairs of On-type or Off-type neurons. Such relative independence allowed for better averaging out of the noise response when pooling neural activities in a mixed-type (i.e., On- and Off-type) than for same-type (i.e., only On-type or only Off-type), thereby leading to greater information transmission about the signal. Our results thus reveal a function for the combined activities of On- and Off-type neurons towards improving information transmission of envelope stimuli at the population level. Our results will likely generalize because natural stimuli across modalities are characterized by a stimulus waveform whose envelope varies independently as well as because On- and Off-type neurons are observed across systems and species.

Abstract
Animals vary considerably in size, shape, and physiological features across individuals, but yet achieve remarkably similar behavioral performances. We examined how animals compensate for morphophysiological variation by measuring the system dynamics of individual knifefish (Eigenmannia virescens) in a refuge tracking task. Kinematic measurements of Eigenmannia were used to generate individualized estimates of each fish’s locomotor plant and controller, revealing substantial variability between fish. To test the impact of this variability on behavioral performance, these models were used to perform simulated ‘brain transplants’—computationally swapping controllers and plants between individuals. We found that simulated closed-loop performance was robust to mismatch between plant and controller. This suggests that animals rely on feedback rather than precisely tuned neural controllers to compensate for morphophysiological variability. People come in different shapes and sizes, but most will perform similarly well if asked to complete a task requiring fine manual dexterity – such as holding a pen or picking up a single grape. How can different individuals, with different sized hands and muscles, produce such similar movements? One explanation is that an individual’s brain and nervous system become precisely tuned to mechanics of the body’s muscles and skeleton. An alternative explanation is that brain and nervous system use a more “robust” control policy that can compensate for differences in the body by relying on feedback from the senses to guide the movements. To distinguish between these two explanations, Uyanik et al. turned to weakly electric freshwater fish known as glass knifefish. These fish seek refuge within root systems, reed grass and among other objects in the water. They swim backwards and forwards to stay hidden despite constantly changing currents. Each fish shuttles back and forth by moving a long ribbon-like fin on the underside of its body. Uyanik et al. measured the movements of the ribbon fin under controlled conditions in the laboratory, and then used the data to create computer models of the brain and body of each fish. The models of each fish’s brain and body were quite different. To study how the brain interacts with the body, Uyanik et al. then conducted experiments reminiscent of those described in the story of Frankenstein and transplanted the brain from each computer model into the body of different model fish. These “brain swaps” had almost no effect on the model’s simulated swimming behavior. Instead, these “Frankenfish” used sensory feedback to compensate for any mismatch between their brain and body. This suggests that, for some behaviors, an animal’s brain does not need to be precisely tuned to the specific characteristics of its body. Instead, robust control of movement relies on many seemingly redundant systems that provide sensory feedback. This has implications for the field of robotics. It further suggests that when designing robots, engineers should prioritize enabling the robots to use sensory feedback to cope with unexpected events, a well-known idea in control engineering.

Abstract
Perception and motor control traditionally are studied separately. However, motor activity can serve as a scaffold to shape the sensory flow. This tight link between motor actions and sensing is particularly evident in active sensory systems. Here, we investigate how the weakly electric mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersii of undetermined sex structure their sensing and motor behavior while learning a perceptual task. We find systematic adjustments of the motor behavior that correlate with an increased performance. Using a model to compute the electrosensory input, we show that these behavioral adjustments improve the sensory input. As we find low neuronal detection thresholds at the level of medullary electrosensory neurons, it seems that the behavior-driven improvements of the sensory input are highly suitable to overcome the sensory limitations, thereby increasing the sensory range. Our results show that motor control is an active component of sensory learning, demonstrating that a detailed understanding of contribution of motor actions to sensing is needed to understand even seemingly simple behaviors.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Motor-guided sensation and perception are intertwined, with motor behavior serving as a scaffold to shape the sensory input. We characterized how the weakly electric mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersii, as it learns a perceptual task, restructures its sensorimotor behavior. We find that systematic adjustments of the motor behavior correlate with increased performance and a shift of the sensory attention of the animal. Analyzing the afferent electrosensory input shows that a significant gain in information results from these sensorimotor adjustments. Our results show that motor control can be an active component of sensory learning. Researching the sensory corollaries of motor control thus can be crucial to understand sensory sensation and perception under naturalistic conditions.

Abstract
Biological systems must be flexible to environmental changes to survive. This is exemplified by the fact that sensory systems continuously adapt to changes in the environment to optimize coding and behavioral responses. However, the nature of the underlying mechanisms remains poorly understood in general. Here, we investigated the mechanisms mediating adaptive optimized coding of naturalistic stimuli with varying statistics depending on the animal's velocity during movement. We found that central neurons adapted their responses to stimuli with different power spectral densities such as to optimally encode them, thereby ensuring that behavioral responses are, in turn, better matched to the new stimulus statistics. Sensory adaptation further required descending inputs from the forebrain as well as the raphe nuclei. Our findings thus reveal a previously unknown functional role for descending pathways in mediating adaptive optimized coding of natural stimuli that is likely generally applicable across sensory systems and species.

Abstract
Environmental signals act as input and are processed across successive stages in the brain to generate a meaningful behavioral output. However, a ubiquitous observation is that descending feedback projections from more central to more peripheral brain areas vastly outnumber ascending feedforward projections. Such projections generally act to modify how sensory neurons respond to afferent signals. Recent studies in the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish have revealed novel functions for feedback pathways in that their transformation of the afferent input generates neural firing rate responses to sensory signals mediating perception and behavior. In this review, we focus on summarizing these novel and recently uncovered functions and put them into context by describing the more "classical" functions of feedback in the electrosensory system. We further highlight the parallels between the electrosensory system and other systems as well as outline interesting future directions.

Abstract
Molecular switches, such as the protein kinase CaMKII, play a fundamental role in cell signaling by decoding inputs into either high or low states of activity; because the high activation state can be turned on and persist after the input ceases, these switches have earned a reputation as "digital." Although this on/off, binary perspective has been valuable for understanding long timescale synaptic plasticity, accumulating experimental evidence suggests that the CaMKII switch can also control plasticity on short timescales. To investigate this idea further, a non-autonomous, nonlinear ordinary differential equation, representative of a general bistable molecular switch, is analyzed. The results suggest that switch activity in regions surrounding either the high- or low-stable states of activation could act as a reliable analog signal, whose short timescale fluctuations relative to equilibrium track instantaneous input frequency. The model makes intriguing predictions and is validated against previous work demonstrating its suitability as a minimal representation of switch dynamics; in combination with existing experimental evidence, the theory suggests a multiplexed encoding of instantaneous frequency information over short timescales, with integration of total activity over longer timescales.

Abstract
Active sensing involves the production of motor signals for the purpose of acquiring sensory information [1-3]. The most common form of active sensing, found across animal taxa and behaviors, involves the generation of movements-e.g., whisking [4-6], touching [7, 8], sniffing [9, 10], and eye movements [11]. Active sensing movements profoundly affect the information carried by sensory feedback pathways [12-15] and are modulated by both top-down goals (e.g., measuring weight versus texture [1, 16]) and bottom-up stimuli (e.g., lights on or off [12]), but it remains unclear whether and how these movements are controlled in relation to the ongoing feedback they generate. To investigate the control of movements for active sensing, we created an experimental apparatus for freely swimming weakly electric fish, Eigenmannia virescens, that modulates the gain of reafferent feedback by adjusting the position of a refuge based on real-time videographic measurements of fish position. We discovered that fish robustly regulate sensory slip via closed-loop control of active sensing movements. Specifically, as fish performed the task of maintaining position inside the refuge [17-22], they dramatically up- or downregulated fore-aft active sensing movements in relation to a 4-fold change of experimentally modulated reafferent gain. These changes in swimming movements served to maintain a constant magnitude of sensory slip. The magnitude of sensory slip depended on the presence or absence of visual cues. These results indicate that fish use two controllers: one that controls the acquisition of information by regulating feedback from active sensing movements and another that maintains position in the refuge, a control structure that may be ubiquitous in animals [23, 24].

Abstract
The fact that perception and behavior depend on the simultaneous and coordinated activity of neural populations is well established. Understanding encoding through neuronal population activity is however complicated by the statistical dependencies between the activities of neurons, which can be present in terms of both their mean (signal correlations) and their response variability (noise correlations). Here, we review the state of knowledge regarding population coding and the influence of correlated variability in the electrosensory pathways of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. We summarize known population coding strategies at the peripheral level, which are largely unaffected by noise correlations. We then move on to the hindbrain, where existing data from the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) shows the presence of noise correlations. We summarize the current knowledge regarding the mechanistic origins of noise correlations and known mechanisms of stimulus dependent correlation shaping in ELL. We finish by considering future directions for understanding population coding in the electrosensory pathways of weakly electric fish, highlighting the benefits of this model system for understanding the origins and impact of noise correlations on population coding.

Abstract
Learning the spatial organization of the environment is essential for most animals’ survival. This requires the animal to derive allocentric spatial information from egocentric sensory and motor experience. The neural mechanisms underlying this transformation are mostly unknown. We addressed this problem in electric fish, which can precisely navigate in complete darkness and whose brain circuitry is relatively simple. We conducted the first neural recordings in the preglomerular complex, the thalamic region exclusively connecting the optic tectum with the spatial learning circuits in the dorsolateral pallium. While tectal topographic information was mostly eliminated in preglomerular neurons, the time-intervals between object encounters were precisely encoded. We show that this reliable temporal information, combined with a speed signal, can permit accurate estimation of the distance between encounters, a necessary component of path-integration that enables computing allocentric spatial relations. Our results suggest that similar mechanisms are involved in sequential spatial learning in all vertebrates. Finding their way around is an essential part of survival for many animals and helps them to locate food, mates and shelter. Animals have evolved the ability to form a 'map' or representation of their surroundings. For example, the electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus, is able to precisely learn the location of food and navigate there. It can do this in complete darkness by generating a weak electric field. As it swims, every object it encounters generates an ‘electric image’ that is detected on the skin and processed in the brain. However, all the cues the fish comes across are from its own point of view – the information about its environment is processed with respect to its location. And yet, the map that it generates needs to be independent of the fish’s position – it has to work regardless of where the animal is. The way animals translate ‘self-centered’ experiences to form a general representation of their surroundings is not yet fully understood. Now, Wallach et al. studied how internal brain maps are generated in A. leptorhynchus. Information about the fish's environment passes through a structure in the brain called the preglomerular complex. Measuring the activity of this region revealed that the preglomerular complex does not process much self-centered information. Instead, whenever the fish passed any object – regardless of where it was in relation to the fish – the event triggered a brief burst of preglomerular activity. The intensity of the activity depended on how recently the fish had encountered another object. This information, combined with the dynamics of the fish's movement, could be what allows the fish to convert a sequence of encounters into a general spatial map. These findings could help to inform research on learning and navigation. Further research could also reveal whether other species, including humans, generate their mental maps in a similar way. This may be relevant for people suffering from diseases such as Alzheimer’s, in which a sense of orientation has become impaired.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that sensory neurons achieve optimal encoding by matching their tuning properties to the natural stimulus statistics. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that feedback pathways from higher brain areas mediate optimized encoding of naturalistic stimuli via temporal whitening in the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. While one source of direct feedback uniformly enhances neural responses, a separate source of indirect feedback selectively attenuates responses to low frequencies, thus creating a high-pass neural tuning curve that opposes the decaying spectral power of natural stimuli. Additionally, we recorded from two populations of higher brain neurons responsible for the direct and indirect descending inputs. While one population displayed broadband tuning, the other displayed high-pass tuning and thus performed temporal whitening. Hence, our results demonstrate a novel function for descending input in optimizing neural responses to sensory input through temporal whitening that is likely to be conserved across systems and species.

Abstract
Many cortical neurons combine the information ascending and descending the cortical hierarchy. In the classical view, this information is combined nonlinearly to give rise to a single firing-rate output, which collapses all input streams into one. We analyze the extent to which neurons can simultaneously represent multiple input streams by using a code that distinguishes spike timing patterns at the level of a neural ensemble. Using computational simulations constrained by experimental data, we show that cortical neurons are well suited to generate such multiplexing. Interestingly, this neural code maximizes information for short and sparse bursts, a regime consistent with in vivo recordings. Neurons can also demultiplex this information, using specific connectivity patterns. The anatomy of the adult mammalian cortex suggests that these connectivity patterns are used by the nervous system to maintain sparse bursting and optimal multiplexing. Contrary to firing-rate coding, our findings indicate that the physiology and anatomy of the cortex may be interpreted as optimizing the transmission of multiple independent signals to different targets.

Abstract
Natural sensory stimuli frequently consist of a fast time-varying waveform whose amplitude or contrast varies more slowly. While changes in contrast carry behaviorally relevant information necessary for sensory perception, their processing by the brain remains poorly understood to this day. Here, we investigated the mechanisms that enable neural responses to and perception of low-contrast stimuli in the electrosensory system of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. We found that fish reliably detected such stimuli via robust behavioral responses. Recordings from peripheral electrosensory neurons revealed stimulus-induced changes in firing activity (i.e., phase locking) but not in their overall firing rate. However, central electrosensory neurons receiving input from the periphery responded robustly via both phase locking and increases in firing rate. Pharmacological inactivation of feedback input onto central electrosensory neurons eliminated increases in firing rate but did not affect phase locking for central electrosensory neurons in response to low-contrast stimuli. As feedback inactivation eliminated behavioral responses to these stimuli as well, our results show that it is changes in central electrosensory neuron firing rate that are relevant for behavior, rather than phase locking. Finally, recordings from neurons projecting directly via feedback to central electrosensory neurons revealed that they provide the necessary input to cause increases in firing rate. Our results thus provide the first experimental evidence that feedback generates both neural and behavioral responses to low-contrast stimuli that are commonly found in the natural environment. Feedback input from more central to more peripheral brain areas is found ubiquitously in the central nervous system of vertebrates. In this study, we used a combination of electrophysiological, behavioral, and pharmacological approaches to reveal a novel function for feedback pathways in generating neural and behavioral responses to weak sensory input in the weakly electric fish. We first determined that weak sensory input gives rise to responses that are phase locked in both peripheral sensory neurons and in the central neurons that are their downstream targets. However, central neurons also responded to weak sensory inputs that were not relayed via a feedforward input from the periphery, because complete inactivation of the feedback pathway abolished increases in firing rate but not the phase locking in response to weak sensory input. Because such inactivation also abolished the behavioral responses, our results show that the increases in firing rate in central neurons, and not the phase locking, are decoded downstream to give rise to perception. Finally, we discovered that the neurons providing feedback input were also activated by weak sensory input, thereby offering further evidence that feedback is necessary to elicit increases in firing rate that are needed for perception.

Abstract
Serotonergic innervation of sensory areas is found ubiquitously across the central nervous system of vertebrates. Here, we used a system's level approach to investigate the role of serotonin on processing motion stimuli in the electrosensory system of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus albifrons. We found that exogenous serotonin application increased the firing activity of pyramidal neural responses to both looming and receding motion. Separating spikes belonging to bursts from those that were isolated revealed that this effect was primarily due to increased burst firing. Moreover, when investigating whether firing activity during stimulation could be discriminated from baseline (i.e., in the absence of stimulation), we found that serotonin increased stimulus discriminability only for some stimuli. This is because increased burst firing was most prominent for these. Further, the effects of serotonin were highly heterogeneous, with some neurons displaying large while others instead displaying minimal changes in responsiveness following serotonin application. Further analysis revealed that serotonin application had the greatest effect on neurons with low baseline firing rates and little to no effect on neurons with high baseline firing rates. Finally, the effects of serotonin on sensory neuron responses were largely independent of object velocity. Our results therefore reveal a novel function for the serotonergic system in selectively enhancing discriminability for motion stimuli.
