Abstract
Antibiotics and their secondary metabolites are commonly found in aquatic ecosystems, leading to the passive exposure of many aquatic animals to low doses of antibiotics, which can affect their health. However, there is limited information available on how to mitigate the side effects of antibiotics on normal aquatic animals. This study aimed to investigate the potential of dietary β-glucan to alleviate the side effects induced by antibiotics in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) (0.37 ± 0.02 g). A six-week feeding trial was conducted with four dietary treatments including a control, 1 g/kg β-glucan (β-glucan), 50 mg/kg oxytetracycline (OTC), and a combination of 50 mg/kg OTC and 1 g/kg β-glucan (Mix) groups. At the end of the trial, the growth performance, intestinal microbial composition, antioxidant capacity, and immune response of the shrimp were assessed. There were no significant differences in growth performance among the groups, but the condition factor of the shrimp in the Mix group was significantly decreased when compared to the control and β-glucan groups. The activities of hepatopancreas catalase (CAT) and serum phenol oxidase in the OTC group were significantly lower than those in the control group. On the other hand, the activities of hepatopancreas superoxide dismutase and CAT enzymes in the β-glucan group were significantly higher than those in the OTC group. The supplementation of β-glucan in combination with antibiotics significantly increased the CAT activity and bacteriolytic activity compared to the OTC and control groups, respectively. Moreover, an analysis of the intestinal microbiota revealed that the Observed_species estimator in the Mix group was significantly higher than that in the control group. Dietary antibiotics significantly increased the abundance of Actinobacteria at the phylum level, but the Mix group showed no significant difference. The supplementation of β-glucan in combination with antibiotics also significantly increased the relative abundance of Meridianimaribacter compared to the control group. Additionally, the synergistic influence of β-glucan with antibiotics increased the beta diversity of intestinal microbiotas. These findings suggest that the supplementation of β-glucan in combination with antibiotics on Pacific white shrimp can alleviate the low antioxidant capacity and immune response caused by antibiotics while enhancing the intestinal microbial composition. This provides a potential solution to mitigate the negative impacts of antibiotics in aquaculture.

Abstract
This study investigated the synergistic effects of oxolinic acid (OA) combined with oxytetracycline (OTC) on white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). Disk diffusion susceptibility testing was performed to analyze the sensitivity of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus to different concentrations of OA and OTC. The results revealed that 50 mg OA/L combined with 50 mg OTC/L exhibited stronger antibacterial effects on V. alginolyticus and V. parahaemolyticus. The results of in vitro tests indicated that cotreatment with OA and OTC significantly reduced superoxide anion production and phenoloxidase activity, but not phagocytic activity. Subsequently, feeding trials were performed to investigate the immunomodulatory effects and bioaccumulation of dietary OA combined with OTC on shrimp. The healthy shrimp (15.13 ± 1.02 g) were divided into four groups: control, 100 mg OA/kg combined with 50 mg OTC/kg, 50 mg OA/kg combined with 100 mg OTC/kg, and 50 mg OA/kg combined with 50 mg OTC/kg. The shrimp were sampled to determine innate immunity parameters and residual OA and OTC levels in the muscle during a 28-day feeding regimen; the shrimp were fed the experimental diet from day 1 to day 5 and a commercial diet from day 6 to day 28. Residual OA levels were considerably higher in the group fed 100 mg OA/kg combined with 50 mg OTC/kg compared with the other groups and peaked on day 4. The residual OA levels of all the groups were below the detection limit after without providing OA. The residual OTC levels of the group fed 50 mg OA/kg combined with 100 mg OTC/kg were considerably higher from day 1 to day 4. The residual OTC levels in all the groups decreased rapidly and could not be detected on day 28. The administration of 50 mg OA/kg combined with 100 mg OTC/kg exerted the least effect on the white shrimp. Moreover, the survival rates of the treatment groups after the V. parahaemolyticus challenge were higher than those of the control group, especially the group fed 50 mg OA/kg combined with 100 mg OTC/kg. This result indicated that the synergistic effects of dietary OA and OTC are safe and effective. Combination therapy is a new method of antibiotic use in aquaculture.

Abstract
Oxytetracycline (OTC) is employed in fish farms to contest or prevent bacterial infections. We simulated an OTC treatment at therapeutic level (75 mg kg(-1)) and at higher doses (150, 300 mg kg(-1)) for 10 days. A withdrawal period of 10 days was considered for treated carp, carrying out the same chemical and biochemical analyses (total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and malondialdehyde). The aim was to obtain data related to the carryover in muscle and on variations in the antioxidant indicators in liver and kidney. The OTC residual levels in muscle showed a dose-response relationship. After 10 days of treatment at the recommended dose (75 mg kg(-1)), the mean value in muscle was 295 μg kg(-1). After 10 withdrawal days, residues in all treated groups were not entirely eliminated by fish. Residues of recommended 75 mg kg(-1) OTC dose were lower than the maximum permitted by EEC regulation: 100 μg kg(-1). Disturbance in the antioxidant systems in liver and kidney was recorded in (150, 300 mg kg(-1)) carp, as well as during the withdrawal period. A lowered superoxide dismutase activity and higher levels of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione were evaluated in liver, while in kidney only higher malondialdehyde and glutathione S-transferase concentrations were recorded for 300 mg kg(-1) dose. The therapeutic OTC dose exerted lower effects, and only in liver, enhancement of GPx and GR activities was recorded. After the withdrawal period, altered antioxidant responses in tissues were restored for all three OTC doses.

Abstract
Several immune-related molecules in penaeid shrimps have been discovered, most of these via the analysis of expressed sequence tag libraries, microarray studies and proteomic approaches. These immune molecules include antimicrobial peptides, serine proteinases and inhibitors, phenoloxidases, oxidative enzymes, clottable protein, pattern recognition proteins, lectins, Toll receptors, and other humoral factors that might participate in the innate immune system of shrimps. These molecules have mainly been found in the hemolymph and hemocytes, which are the main sites where immune reactions take place, while some are found in other immune organs/tissues, such as the lymphoid organs, gills and intestines. Although the participation of some of these immune molecules in the shrimp innate immune defense against invading pathogens has been demonstrated, the functions of many molecules remain unclear. This review summarizes the current status of our knowledge concerning the discovery and functional characterization of the immune molecules in penaeid shrimps.

Abstract
White spot disease is caused by a highly virulent pathogen, the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). The disease is usually triggered by changes in environmental parameters causing severe losses to the shrimp industry. This study was undertaken to quantify the relative WSSV load in shrimp exposed to ammonia, using a TaqMan-based real-time PCR, and their subsequent susceptibility to WSSV. Shrimp were exposed to different levels of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) (8.1, 3.8 and 1.1 mg L⁻¹) for 10 days and challenged with WSSV by feeding WSSV-positive shrimp. WSSV was detected simultaneously in haemolymph, gills and pereopods at four hours post-infection. The TaqMan real-time PCR assay showed a highly dynamic detection limit that spanned over 6 log₁₀ concentrations of DNA and high reproducibility (standard deviation 0.33-1.42) and small correlation of variability (CV) (1.89-3.85%). Shrimp exposed to ammonia had significantly higher (P < 0.01) WSSV load compared to the positive control, which was not exposed to ammonia. Shrimp exposed to 8.1 mg L⁻¹ of TAN had the highest (P < 0.01) WSSV load in all three organs in comparison with those exposed to 3.8 and 1.1 mg L⁻¹ of TAN. However, haemolymph had significantly higher (P < 0.01) viral load compared to the gills and pereopods. Results showed that shrimp exposed to ammonia levels as low as 1.1 mg L⁻¹ (TAN) had increased susceptibility to WSSV.
