Optical and colorimetric evaluation of a multi-color polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network material

Translucency and colour masking ability of hybrid CAD/CAM materials with different thicknesses: in vitro study

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate effect of material thickness and translucency of two different hybrid CAD/CAM materials on their masking ability.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

40 rectangular-shaped specimens (12 × 14 mm) were obtained from Vita Enamic and Grandio blocks at 0.5 and 1 mm-thick (n = 10/group). Colour parameters of specimens were measured on PMMA tooth-coloured replica backgrounds (A2, C4) and black, white backings using dental spectrophotometer. Translucency parameter (TP) and masking ability (∆E00) values of tested materials with 0.5, and 1 mm thicknesses were calculated. Quantitative variables were compared between groups using student t-test.

RESULTS

TP and ∆E00 significantly decreased as thickness of tested materials increased. Grandio showed significantly higher TP values. There were significantly lower ΔE00 values for Vita Enamic compared to Grandio at 1 mm thickness and inversely insignificant at 0.5 mm. The 0.5 mm-thick ∆E00 of tested materials was above clinical acceptability threshold, whereas, 1 mm-thick did not exceed showing better masking properties.

CONCLUSIONS

Thickness is more effective for colour masking than translucency. In thin thickness, the masking ability is less effective, irrespective of tested materials. Translucency of tested materials was affected by their composition. Both hybrid CAD/CAM materials are promising alternatives for masking dark discolouration at 1 mm-thick.

Effect of the coloring liquid shade and dipping time on the color, transparency, and flexural strength of monolithic zirconia

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The impact of different coloring liquid shades and dipping times on the color, transparency, and flexural strength of monolithic zirconia ceramics is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different coloring liquid shades (A2, 3M2, and 5M2) and dipping times (no dipping, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 90 seconds) on the color difference (ΔE00), relative translucency parameter (ΔRTP00), and 3-point flexural strength (σ) of monolithic zirconia ceramics.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP, 3 mol%) was cut into Ø16×1.2-mm plates (n=10) and 25×4×1.2-mm bars (n=15), which were colored using 3 shades of coloring liquid at 4 dipping times. Color coordinates were measured on a gray background by using a digital spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere attachment. The color and translucency differences were evaluated using 50:50% perceptibility (PT00 and TPT00) and acceptability (AT00 and TAT00) thresholds. The 3-point flexural strengths of the bar-shaped specimens were measured using a universal testing machine and analyzed using the Weibull distribution to calculate the Weibull modulus (m) and characteristic fracture strength (σ0). The data were analyzed with the 2-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and LSD post hoc tests (α=.05).

RESULTS

Both shade and dipping time significantly affected the color and translucency of monolithic zirconia (P<.001). The ΔE00 was above the PT00 for all groups, with only 3M2-90 and A2-60 being below the AT00. The main cause of color differences was the difference in lightness. Only A2 showed ΔRTP00 below the TPT00 (A2-30 (ΔRTP00=0.26), A2-60 (ΔRTP00=0.29), and A2-90 (ΔRTP00=0.46)). All experimental groups showed translucency differences below TAT00. In addition, only the dipping time had a significant effect on the flexural strength of zirconia (P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The optical properties of monolithic zirconia ceramics were affected by the shade and dipping time of the coloring liquid. The mismatch in lightness was the main reason for the color difference. The dipping time affects the flexural strength of monolithic zirconia, whereas the shade of the coloring liquid did not seem to influence flexural strength.

Color stability of CAD-CAM hybrid ceramic materials following immersion in artificial saliva and wine

PURPOSE

To examine the color stability of 3D-printed and milled, interim, and definitive, restorative materials after immersion in artificial saliva and wine for 1, 3, and 6 months.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study used a 2 × 5 factorial design with 10 subgroups, including 2 immersion liquids (artificial saliva and wine) and 5 manufacturing technology and restorative material combinations (n = 10). Color measurements were taken using a contact-type digital spectrophotometer (CM-2600d Spectrophotometer; Konica Minolta Healthcare Americas Inc) before immersion and at 1 month (T1), 3 months (T3), and 6 months (T6) after immersion. The CIE2000 system was used to calculate quantitative measurements of color differences in ΔE00, and comparisons were made to the acceptability threshold (AT) and perceptibility threshold (PT). Repeated measures of ANOVA (α = 0.05) were used to compare differences in color changes between manufacturing technology/restorative material-immersion liquid combinations at T1, T3, and T6.

RESULTS

To compare the effect of immersion liquid and time on the manufacturing technology/restorative material groups, the ΔE00 values were compared to the PT of 0.8 and the AT of 1.8. Wine caused significant color changes in ΔE00 values beyond the PT and AT values in all groups at all time intervals, except for the AT value of milled definitive crowns (hybrid nano-ceramic material). Wine immersion caused significant ΔE00 for all manufacturing technology/restorative material groups at all time intervals (1 month, 3 months, and 6 months) when compared to artificial saliva immersion (all p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Upon exposure to artificial saliva, 80%-100% of samples from all groups remained within the acceptable and perceptible color change thresholds. The wine had significant chromogenic effects on all tested restorative materials, however, the milled definitive crowns (hybrid nano-ceramic material) showed the greatest color stability. For patients with heavy wine consumption, 3D-printed definitive crowns (hybrid ceramic-filled material) may show discoloration exceeding acceptable and perceptible color change limits.

Optical properties of dental zirconia, bovine dentin, and enamel-dentin structures

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the optical properties and the relative translucency parameter of Ceramill ZI White (3Y-TZP) and Ceramill Zolid FX White (5Y-PSZ) zirconia ceramic systems and compare them with those of the bovine dentin and enamel/dentin structures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ zirconia ceramic systems were evaluated. A 0.5-mm-thick 3Y-TZP (3Y-NC.5), 0.5-mm-thick (5Y-NC.5), and 1.4-mm-thick (5Y-C.14) were used. A 0.5-mm-thick dentin specimens and 1.4-mm-thick enamel/dentin specimens (n = 5) were obtained from anterior bovine maxillary teeth. Scattering, absorption, transmittance, and albedo coefficient were calculated using Kubelka-Munk's model. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.001), and goodness-of-fit coefficient (GFC). Relative translucency parameter differences were evaluated using translucency thresholds.

RESULTS

Reflectance, scattering, absorption, and transmittance properties were wavelength dependent. Good matches (GFC ≥ 0.999) in spectral reflectance were observed between 0.5-mm-thick dentin and 1.4-mm-thick enamel/dentin, and 3Y-NC.5 and 5Y-NC.5. Scattering was the main optical extinction process during light interaction with zirconia and dental structures, as indicated by albedo coefficient. Translucency differences were acceptable only for 3Y-NC.5 and the dentin structure, and 5Y-C.14 and the enamel/dentin structure.

CONCLUSIONS

Optical properties of 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ dental zirconia differed from each other and from bovine dental structures. Nevertheless, 3Y-TZP showed similar relative translucency parameter to bovine dentin.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

To achieve the best esthetic results in restorative dentistry, it is crucial for clinicians to know about the optical properties of 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ and to be able to compare these properties with those of dental structures.

Effect of thickness, translucency, and substrates on the masking ability of a polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network material

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this in vitro study is to evaluate the masking ability of polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network materials (PICN) with different translucencies and thicknesses on multiple types of substrates.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Ceramic samples were prepared of VITA ENAMIC blocks in two different translucencies (2M2-T, 2M2-HT) in a thickness range of 0.5-2.5 mm (±0.05 mm). Layered specimens were obtained using composite substrates in nine shades and transparent try-in paste. Spectral reflectance of specimens was measured using a Konica Minolta CM-3720d spectrophotometer and D65 standard illumination. CIEDE2000 color difference (ΔE00 ) between two samples was evaluated using 50%:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. Specular component of the reflection was examined with Specular Component Excluded (SCE) and Included (SCI) settings. Statistical evaluation was performed by linear regression analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test, and multiplicative effect analysis.

RESULTS

An increase in thickness of 0.5 mm reduces ΔE00 of HT samples to 73.5%, of T samples to 60.5% (p < 0.0001). Five substrates with HT specimens, and three substrates with T specimens had significantly different results from average (p < 0.05). There is a significant difference between SCE and SCI data depending on the wavelength (p < 0.0001).

CONCLUSIONS

Masking ability of PICN materials is influenced by the thickness and translucency of the ceramic, and by the substrate. Reflection of the examined PICN material is characterized by both diffuse and specular reflection.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Although PICN materials have been available on the market for 10 years now, there is a lack of information regarding their masking ability. Acquiring in-depth data and thereby practical experience of the factors affecting the esthetics of PICN materials is essential for creating perfectly lifelike restorations.

Performance of two-flux and four-flux models for predicting the spectral reflectance and transmittance factors of flowable dental resin composites

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the prediction accuracy of the Kubelka-Munk Reflectance Theory and other more innovative two-flux and four-flux models for predicting the reflectance and transmittance factors of two flowable dental resin composites of various thicknesses within clinically acceptable color difference.

METHODS

Cylindrical samples of Aura Easy Flow resin composite (Ae1, Ae2, Ae3, Ae4 shades) and Estelite Universal Flow SuperLow resin composite (A1, A2, A3, A3.5, A4, A5 shades) were prepared with thicknesses ranging from 0.3 mm to 1.8 mm. Their reflectance and transmittance factors were measured with a spectrophotometer based on an integrating sphere, and were also predicted by 3 different two-flux models and 2 different four-flux models. The accuracy of reflectance and transmittance factor predictions was assessed using the CIEDE2000 color distance metric and 50:50% acceptability and perceptibility threshold criteria.

RESULTS

Eymard's four-flux model is found to be the most accurate for predicting the spectral reflectance and transmittance factors, with 85% (resp. 100%) of all color deviations below the acceptability threshold, and below the perceptibility threshold for 40% (resp. 57%) of the samples with thickness ranging from 0.3 to 1.8 mm in reflectance (resp. transmittance) mode. The Kubelka-Munk Reflectance Theory is found to be the least accurate model for predicting the spectral reflectance and transmittance factors of dental resin of thickness ranging from 0.3 to 1.8 mm.

SIGNIFICANCE

Eymard's four-flux model enables to predict the color of slices of dental materials within acceptable color differences. Eymard's four-flux model's optical parameters thus describe light-matter interactions in dental materials more accurately than state of the art Kubelka-Munk Reflectance Theory.

Effect of thickness on color and translucency of a multi-color polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network material

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effect of thickness on color and translucency of a multi-color polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network (PICN) material.

METHODS

Specimens of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 mm thicknesses were obtained by sectioning VITA ENAMIC® multiColor (E-MC) High Translucent CAD-CAM blocks (1M1-HT, 1M2-HT, 2M2-HT, 3M2-HT, and 4M2-HT). Spectral reflectance and color coordinates were measured on white and black backgrounds using a spectroradiometer, CIE D65 illuminant and CIE 45°/0° geometry. CIEDE2000 color and translucency differences (ΔE₀₀ and ΔTP₀₀ ) between thicknesses and adjacent layers were evaluated using their respective 50:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds (PT₀₀ and AT₀₀ ).

RESULTS

In general, ΔE₀₀ between thicknesses for all shades and layers were above AT₀₀ in general. Chroma decreased from cervical to incisal layers with statistically significant differences (p < 0.05), and ΔE₀₀ between sequential layers were above PT₀₀ , for all shades and thicknesses. TP₀₀ decreased from 0.5 to 1.5 mm and increased from cervical to incisal layers for all shades with statically significant translucency differences (p < 0.05). In general, for all thicknesses, TPT₀₀  < ΔTP₀₀  < TAT₀₀ for sequential layers.

CONCLUSIONS

The gradient in color and translucency of E-MC PICN material was influenced by the thickness of the CAD-CAM block. In addition, color and TP transition values between the layers depends on the thickness and shade.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The effect of thickness must be taken into account by dental technicians and dentists when CAD-CAM multicolor PICN materials are used.

Development of Thickness-Dependent Predictive Methods for the Estimation of the CIEL*a*b* Color Coordinates of Monolithic and Layered Dental Resin Composites

Usually, dentin and enamel shades are layered in dental restorations with the purpose of mimicking the natural appearance of teeth. The main objective of this study was to develop and assess accuracy of a color-prediction method for both monolithic and layered dental resin-based composites with varying shades and under different illuminants. A total of 15 different shades of VITAPAN Excell, VITAPAN Dentine and VITA Physiodens as well as VITA Enamel of five different thicknesses (0.5-2.5 mm range) were used to manufacture monolithic and layered samples. A non-contact spectroradiometer with CIE 45∘/0∘ geometry was used to measure the color of all samples over a standard ceramic black background. Second-degree polynomial regression was used as predictive method for CIE-L*a*b* color coordinates. Performance of predictive models was tested using the CIEDE2000 total color difference formula (ΔE00), while accuracy was evaluated by comparative assessment of ΔE00 with corresponding 50:50% acceptability (AT00) and perceptibly (PT00) thresholds for dentistry. A mean color difference between measured (real) and predicted color of ΔE00=1.71, with 62.86% of the color differences below AT00 and 28.57% below PT00, was registered for monolithic samples. For bi-layered samples, the mean color difference was roughly ΔE00=0.50, with generally 100% and more than 85% of the estimations below AT00 and PT00, respectively. The predictive method allowed highly accurate color estimations for both monolithic and layered dental resin-based composites with varying thicknesses and under different illuminations. These results could be useful to maximize the clinical success of dental restorations.

Comparing the color match of monolithic CAD-CAM dental ceramics with the VITA Classical shade guide

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Matching the shade selected and the final color of a ceramic restoration is challenging, and studies on matching monolithic ceramics to the shade selected are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the color match of monolithic lithium disilicate (LDS), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS), presintered zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (PS-ZLS), polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN), and multilayer zirconia with the 3 modes of the VITA Classical shade guide.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This study was performed on 50 rectangular plates (14×12×1 mm) of 5 types of ceramics with A2 shade (n=10). Zirconia specimens were evaluated in 3 locations: incisal, medial, and cervical thirds. The color coordinates of the specimens of all 7 groups were measured on #3 and #8 Ivoclar Natural Die Color material by using a reflective spectrophotometer. The color coordinates of A2 VITA shade were measured in 5 modes: without backing placed in specimen holder, shade tab on the backgrounds #3 and #8, and 1-mm-thick shade tab on the backgrounds #3 and #8. The color difference of each specimen with 3 modes of A2 shade (without backing and on similar backgrounds) was calculated by using the ΔE00 formula, and comparison among groups was performed by using 2-way ANOVA and Tamhane post hoc tests. The comparison of ΔE00 between the values obtained from backgrounds #3 and #8 was performed by using the independent t test (α=.05).

RESULTS

In both backgrounds, statistically significant differences were found between the studied groups and VITA shade (P<.001). In most situations, the amount of color difference was lowest for the "shade tab on the backgrounds" mode. On background #3, the highest color difference was related to ZLS (6.48 ±0.23), and the lowest values were observed in the PICN group (1.02 ±0.31). On background #8, the highest color difference was related to ZLS compared with the "without backing" mode (8.62 ±0.27), and the lowest values were reported for ZLS compared with the "shade tab on the backgrounds" mode (1.27 ±0.44). The independent t test showed a statistically significant color difference on the 2 different backgrounds for all situations (P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Color selection of monolithic ceramics with the VITA Classical shade guide is improved by placing the VITA tabs on a similar background. Background color has a significant effect on the final shade of the monolithic ceramics. Choosing the correct color for LDS, ZLS, and PS-ZLS requires more care than for PICN and zirconia.

Color prediction of layered dental resin composites with varying thickness

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of a Principal Components Analysis (PCA)-based method for reflectance reconstruction and color estimation of layered dental resin-based composites with different thicknesses.

METHOD

Bi-layered samples of different clinically relevant thicknesses were created using shades of VITAPAN Excell (VE), VITAPAN Dentine (VD) and VITA Physiodens (VP), combined with their corresponding enamel shades. Spectral reflectance of all samples was measured over a black background using a non-contact spectroradiometer with CIE 45^∘∕0^∘ geometry. Two different PCA-based models, built from two different configurations of known samples, were proposed to reconstruct the spectral data and color of unknown layered samples. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Goodness of Fit (GFC), as well as ΔE₀₀ with corresponding 50:50% acceptability and perceptibly thresholds (AT and PT) were used as performance assessment.

RESULTS

The 5-samples training set approach provided an average RMSE < 0.015 and GFC > 0.999 when measured and predicted spectral reflectances were compared, while for the 9-samples training set, RMSE < 0.0098 and GFC > 0.9999 were obtained. The overall mean color differences obtained with the 5-samples training set approach were ΔE₀₀ = 0.99 (AT% = 96.25% and PT% = 32.50%), while using the 9-samples training set resulted in lower overall mean color differences: ΔE₀₀ = 0.50 (AT% = 99.22% and PT% = 83.87%).

SIGNIFICANCE

Within the framework of this study, the two proposed PCA-based configurations allow the prediction of the spectral reflectance of layered dental resin-based composites of different shades and thicknesses, with a high degree of accuracy.

Comparison of translucency and opalescence among different dental monolithic ceramics

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Monolithic ceramic restorations designed by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing are increasingly being used by clinicians. With the introduction of new materials, their optical characteristics also need to be investigated.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the translucency and opalescence of lithium disilicate, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate, presintered zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate, polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network material, and multilayer zirconia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 50 rectangular plates (14×12×1 mm) of 5 monolithic ceramics were prepared in this in vitro study (n=10). Each zirconia specimen was divided into 3 groups of incisal, middle, and gingival thirds. Each group was then evaluated separately. The color parameters of specimens were measured on 3 backgrounds, white, black, and #3 Ivoclar Natural Die Color material, by using a spectrophotometer. The translucency and opalescence of the specimens were determined by the relevant equations, and between-group comparisons were made. One-way ANOVA and Tamhane post hoc tests were used to compare groups (α=.05).

RESULTS

The difference among the groups was significant in translucency (F=137.346, df=6, P<.001), contrast ratio (F=134.148, df=6, P<.001), and opalescence parameters (F=128.028, df=6, P<.001). The 3 zirconia groups (10.87 ±0.54 to 11.88 ±0.26) had a significantly lower translucency than the other groups, and the zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate group (18.14 ±0.74) showed the highest translucency. Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (12.36 ±0.42) had the highest opalescence, and the lowest opalescence was found for polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network (5.43 ±0.28) and the incisal third of zirconia (5.45 ±1.06).

CONCLUSIONS

The zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate and presintered zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate specimens had the highest translucency and opalescence. The studied multilayer zirconia, which had different cubic phase values from incisal to gingival blank, showed similar translucency over the entire range, and differences among different regions were related to chromatic variables.

Optical behavior of one-shaded resin-based composites

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate optical properties, and translucency and opalescence parameters of one-shaded resin-based composites.

METHODS

Three one-shaded resin composites (OM - Omnichroma; VP - Venus Pearl; and VD - Venus Diamond) and a group-shaded resin composite (FU- Filtek Universal A2) were used. Three composite discs from each material were fabricated for each of the following thickness: 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mm. Diffuse reflectance was measured against white and black backgrounds using a calibrated spectroradiometer, CIE D65 illuminant and the CIE 45°/0° geometry. Translucency parameter (TP) was calculated using ΔE_ab^* and ΔE₀₀. Scattering (S) and absorption (K) coefficients and transmittance (T%) were calculated using Kubelka-Munk's equations, and a reflection spectrophotometer was used to measure the opalescence parameter (OP). Data was statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney tests, and VAF coefficient.

RESULTS

Spectral distributions of S, K and T were wavelength dependent, showing significant differences between materials of the same thickness and for different thicknesses of the same material (p < 0.001). OM showed the greatest translucency values for all thicknesses. Translucency decreased as thickness increased with statistically significant differences (p < 0.005). Values of ΔTP_ab and ΔTP₀₀ between thicknesses were above of translucency thresholds for all materials. VP and VD showed the lowest OP values.

SIGNIFICANCE

One-shaded resin-based composites showed different optical behavior than the group-shaded resin-based composite. Understanding the optical behavior of the one-shaded resin-based composites is essential to optimize their clinical performance.

The Benefits of Smart Nanoparticles in Dental Applications

Dentistry, as a branch of medicine, has undergone continuous evolution over time. The scientific world has focused its attention on the development of new methods and materials with improved properties that meet the needs of patients. For this purpose, the replacement of so-called "passive" dental materials that do not interact with the oral environment with "smart/intelligent" materials that have the capability to change their shape, color, or size in response to an externally stimulus, such as the temperature, pH, light, moisture, stress, electric or magnetic fields, and chemical compounds, has received much attention in recent years. A strong trend in dental applications is to apply nanotechnology and smart nanomaterials such as nanoclays, nanofibers, nanocomposites, nanobubbles, nanocapsules, solid-lipid nanoparticles, nanospheres, metallic nanoparticles, nanotubes, and nanocrystals. Among the nanomaterials, the smart nanoparticles present several advantages compared to other materials, creating the possibility to use them in various dental applications, including preventive dentistry, endodontics, restoration, and periodontal diseases. This review is focused on the recent developments and dental applications (drug delivery systems and restoration materials) of smart nanoparticles.

Color, lightness, chroma, hue, and translucency adjustment potential of resin composites using CIEDE2000 color difference formula

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate color, lightness, chroma, hue, and translucency adjustment potential of resin composites using CIEDE2000 color difference formula.

METHODS

Three resin composites (Filtek Universal, Harmonize, and Omnichroma) were tested. Two types of specimens were prepared: an outer base shade with an inner hole filled with test shades and single-composite specimens of all shades. Spectrorradiometric reflectances measurements and subsequent CIELAB color coordinates and translucency parameter (TP) were performed. Color (CAP₀₀ ), lightness, chroma, hue, and translucency (TAP₀₀ ) adjustment potential using CIEDE2000 color difference were computed. Color and transparency differences among composite materials and shades were statistically tested (P < 0.05).

RESULTS

Positive CAP₀₀ and TAP₀₀ values were found for majority of tested materials. CAP₀₀ values ranged from -0.14 to 0.89, with the highest values found for Omnichroma (>0.75 in all cases). TAP₀₀ values ranged from -0.06 to 0.86 with significant translucency differences among dual and single specimens. Omnichroma exhibited the highest adjustment potential for all color dimensions studied.

CONCLUSIONS

Lightness, hue, chroma, and translucency adjustment potential have been introduced using CIEDE2000 color difference formula, and have shown their usefulness to evaluate blending effect in dentistry. Color coordinates and translucency adjustment potential were dependent on dental material. Omnichroma exhibited the most pronounced blending effect.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Resin composites with increased color and translucency adjustment may simplify shade selection, making this process easier and less time consuming. Furthermore, these materials might facilitate challenging and complex color matching situations.

Color inconstancy of natural teeth measured under white light-emitting diode illuminants

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate color and whiteness changes of natural teeth under nine white LED illuminants recently proposed by CIE.

METHODS

From spectral reflectance factors of 36 caries-free upper central incisors, corresponding colors under illuminant D65 and CIE 1931 standard colorimetric observer were computed for all tested illuminants, using the chromatic adaptation transform CAT16. Color differences (CIELAB and CIEDE2000 units) and whiteness (WI_D and WI_O indices) from teeth illuminated by CIE standard illuminants (D65 and A) and white LED illuminants were calculated. The appearance of 630 pairs of teeth under all illuminants was also evaluated.

RESULTS

Color gamuts from 36 teeth under tested illuminants showed similar volume and shape in CIELAB color space, but their centers of gravity changed in many different directions with respect to colors under D65 or A illuminants: Considering colors under D65/A, color shifts produced by white LED illuminants were in the ranges 2.0-8.6/1.1-7.0 CIELAB units (1.4-8.2/0.6-6.8 CIEDE2000 units). Average WI_D and WI_O values for the 36 teeth under different illuminants ranged from -5.8 to +19.3 and from -7.7 to +11.1, respectively. Considering 630 pairs of teeth, average color differences (mainly lightness differences) were below 0.5 CIELAB units (0.3 CIEDE2000 units), and average whiteness differences ranged from 8.1 to 10.7 for WI_D (23.4-25.1 for WI_O).

SIGNIFICANCE

Using CIE LED illuminants, most changes in color and whiteness for individual teeth were above typical threshold values of perceptibility and acceptability in dentistry. However, considering pairs of teeth, the average color and whiteness differences under all tested illuminants were very similar.

How will surface conditioning methods influence the translucency and color properties of CAD-CAM resin-matrix ceramics with different thicknesses?

OBJECTIVE

It was aimed to evaluate the effect of various surface-conditioning methods on the translucency and color properties of resin-matrix ceramics (RMCs) with different types and thicknesses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Rectangle-shaped RMCs were prepared from Voco Grandio, Brilliant Crios, Lava Ultimate, GC Cerasmart, and Vita Enamic blocks at 0.5 and 1.0 mm thicknesses. Specimens were divided into four groups: control, airborne-particle abrasion (APA), 2 and 3 W Er, Cr:YSGG laser irradiations (L^2W , L^3W ) (n = 15). The color values of specimens were recorded before and after surface-conditioning using a spectrophotometer. The translucency parameter (RTP₀₀ ) and color difference (ΔE₀₀ ) values were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests.

RESULTS

The translucencies of RMCs decreased after all surface-conditioning procedures. L caused more decline in translucency of materials than APA. All ΔE₀₀ values were under the acceptability threshold except for APA-applied Voco Grandio at 0.5 mm. Differences in ΔE₀₀ values between APA and L^3W groups were significant (P˂0.05); while differences between L^2W and L^3W groups were insignificant (P > .05). In all experimental groups, ΔE₀₀ values decreased with increasing thickness of RMCs.

CONCLUSIONS

L and APA significantly affected the translucency and color properties of RMCs. APA was found more favorable than L.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Clinicians should carefully use surface conditioning methods, considering their impact on the optical characteristics of RMCs, especially when the restoration is thin.
