Perioral lesions and dermatoses

The purpose of this article is to review the common neoplasms, infections, and inflammatory dermatoses that may present around or near the mouth. Dental professionals are well positioned to evaluate perioral skin conditions, further contributing to patients' general health. This article includes a review of seborrheic keratosis, warts, actinic keratoses, actinic cheilitis, and squamous cell carcinoma, among several other perioral cutaneous lesions.

Efficacy of HPA Lanolin® in treatment of lip alterations related to chemotherapy

The side effects of chemotherapy on the lips may cause esthetic and functional impact and increase the risk of infection. HPA Lanolin^® is an option for supportive therapy because it has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and moisturizing properties.

Investigation on the use of expired make-up and microbiological contamination of mascaras

OBJECTIVES

This study investigated the habits of female students regarding make-up use, and quantifies the microbiological contamination of mascaras worn by this population.

METHODS

To this end, 44 students answered a structured questionnaire to evaluate the use of expired make-up, shared usage and reports of adverse effects. Subsequently, make-up samples were collected to check the manufacturing registration and the expiration date and its visibility on the label. The total counts of microorganisms and identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in mascara samples collected were performed as described in the Brazilian Pharmacopea (4th edition)

RESULTS

According to the results obtained, 97.9 % (43/44) of participants reported that they use or have previously used make-up after the expiration date, with mascara being the most frequently mentioned product. It was observed that on the sample collection date, 70.5% (31/44) of the students had some type of expired make-up. The microbiological analysis of 40 mascara samples revealed 2.54 ± 1.76 10(4)  UFC mL(-1) bacteria and 2.55 ± 1.54 10(4)  UFC mL(-1) fungi. Analysis revealed the presence of S. aureus in 79% of samples and of P. aeruginosa in 13%.

CONCLUSION

The results are interesting because they show that women tend to continue to use make-up beyond the expiry date. Frequently, these products have a high level of contamination with pathogenic microorganisms.

Allergic skin disease

The two most common allergic skin diseases in the world are often the least familiar to practicing surgeons: atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. When unrecognized, these disorders can cause great discomfort and decreased quality of life. This is only made worse by a surgical procedure which can exacerbate the disease process. Through proper recognition, management, and peri-surgical prophylaxis flares of these diseases can be avoided, leading to decreased morbidity and improved patient satisfaction. This article summarizes the pathophysiology and management of both atopic and contact dermatitis, with attention to implications for the surgeon.

Trace detection of hormones and sulfonamides in viscous cosmetic products by neutral desorption extractive electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry

A sensitive method based on a geometry-independent neutral desorption (GIND) in combination with extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS) has been developed for fast detection of illicit additives such as sulfonamides and hormones in highly viscous cosmetic products. The method gave a low limit of detection (LOD) (in the range of 0.001-1 ng/g), acceptable relative standard deviation (RSD=6.8-11.4%) and reasonable recovery (87-116%) for direct measuring of nine types of hormones and sulfonamides in the cosmetic products. The average measurement time for two types of samples was less than 1 min. Trace amounts of analytes in commercial cosmetic products have been quantitatively detected, without any sample pretreatment. The experimental results showed that non-volatile illicit additives such as sulfonamides and hormones could be sensitively liberated using the GIND device for quantitative detection from the highly viscous cosmetic products, demonstrating that GIND-EESI-MS is a promising tool for high throughput, sensitive and quantitative analysis of highly complex viscous samples.
