Abstract
Acute alcohol ingestion has been found to impact visual functions, including eye movement, but its effects on corneal biomechanical properties remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the influence of acute alcohol consumption on corneal biomechanical properties using optical coherence elastography (OCE). An air-coupled ultrasound transducer induced elastic waves in mice corneas in vivo, and a high-resolution phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography (OCT) system tracked the mechanical waves to quantify the elastic wave speed. In vivo measurements were performed on three groups of age- and gender-matched mice: control, placebo (administered saline), and alcohol (administered ethanol) groups. Longitudinal measurements were conducted over a one-hour period to assess acute temporal changes in wave speeds, which are associated with inherent biomechanical properties of the cornea. The results showed a significant decrease in wave speed for the alcohol group after 10 min of ingestion in comparison to pre-ingestion values (p = 0.0096), whereas the temporal wave speed changes for the placebo group were statistically insignificant (p = 0.076). In contrast, the control group showed no significant changes in elastic wave speed and corneal thickness. Furthermore, a significant difference was observed between the wave speeds of the placebo and alcohol groups at each measurement time point between 10 and 50 min (p < 0.05), though both groups exhibited a similar trend in corneal thickness change. The findings of this study have important implications for clinical assessments and research in corneal disorders, highlighting the potential of OCE as a valuable tool for evaluating such changes.

Abstract
The influence of environmental factors like smoking and alcohol on myopia and astigmatism is controversial. However, due to ethical concerns, alternative study designs are urgently needed to assess causal inference, as mandatory exposure to cigarettes and alcohol is unethical. Following comprehensive screenings, 326 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to myopia and astigmatism were included in the dataset. To validate the causal association between exposures such as cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and coffee intake, and outcomes namely astigmatism and myopia, five regression models were employed. These models encompassed MR-Egger regression, random-effects inverse-variance weighted (IVW), weighted median estimator (WME), weighted model, and simple model. The instrumental variables utilized in these analyses were the aforementioned SNPs. Apply Cochran's Q test to determine heterogeneity of SNPs; if heterogeneity exists, focus on IVW model results. The IVW model showed a 1.379-fold increase in the risk of astigmatism (OR = 1.379, 95%CI 0.822~2.313, P = 0.224) and a 0.963-fold increase in the risk of myopia (OR = 0.963, 95%CI 0.666~1.393, P = 0.841) for each unit increase in smoking. For each unit increase in coffee intake, the risk of astigmatism increased 1.610-fold (OR = 1.610, 95%CI 0.444~5.835, P = 0.469) and the risk of myopia increased 0.788-fold (OR = 0.788, 95%CI 0.340~1.824, P = 0.578). For each additional unit of alcohol consumption, the risk of astigmatism increased by 0.763-fold (OR = 0.763, 95%CI 0.380~1.530, P = 0.446), and none of the differences were statistically significant. However, for each unit of alcohol consumption, the risk of myopia increased by 1.597 times, and the difference was statistically significant (OR = 1.597, 95%CI 1.023~2.493, P = 0.039). The findings indicate that alcohol consumption is a risk factor for myopia but smoking and coffee intake do not affect its development. Additionally, there is no association between smoking, alcohol consumption, coffee intake, and the risk of astigmatism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Smoking and alcohol consumption are important risk factors for several ocular disorders, but their effects on corneal biomechanics remain unclear. Our study aims to explore the association between smoking and alcohol consumption with corneal biomechanical parameters measured by Corvis-ST (CST) among university students. SUBJECTS/METHODS A total of 1645 healthy university students from a university-based study were included, and all participants underwent corneal biomechanical parameters measurement by CST. We selected 10 reliable parameters that can reflect the corneal deformation response. All participants had a standardised interview to determine their smoking and alcohol consumption status. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 19.0 ± 0.9 years, and 1132 (68.8%) were women. Smoking was significantly associated with stiffer corneas. Smokers showed significantly slower second applanation velocity (A2v) (β = 0.007 m/s, 95% confidence interval 0.001 to 0.014, P = 0.032) and lower integrated radius (IR) (β = -0.214 mm-1, 95% confidence interval -0.420 to -0.007, P = 0.043) than non-smokers after adjusting for age, gender, eye-rubbing, myopia, and body mass index (BMI). Smokers with BMI no less than 24.0 showed slower A2v and lower IR. Alcohol consumption and passive smoking were found no significant association with corneal biomechanics. CONCLUSION Smokers had less deformable corneas, especially those with BMI no less than 24.0. Our findings provide new evidence for the association between smoking and ocular disorders associated with corneal biomechanics like glaucoma.
