Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are a class of synthetic recognition materials that offer a cost-effective and robust alternative to antibodies. While MIPs have found predominant use in biosensing and diagnostic applications, their potential for alternative uses, such as enzyme inhibition, remains unexplored. In this work, we synthesized a range of acrylamide-based hydrogel MIP microparticles (35 μm) specific for the recognition of α-amylase. These MIPs also showed good selectivity toward the target protein with over 96% binding of the target protein, compared with the control nonimprinted polymer (NIP) counterparts. Specificity of the MIPs was determined with the binding of nontarget proteins, trypsin, human serum albumin (HSA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The MIPs were further evaluated for their ability to inhibit α-amylase enzymatic activity, showing a significant decrease in activity. These findings highlight the potential of MIPs as enzyme inhibitors, suggesting an innovative application beyond their conventional use.

Abstract
One new compound, 4,7-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-5,6-dimethoxyanthraquinone (1), along with eight known compounds (2-9) were isolated from the methanol extracts of the aerial parts of Chamaecrista pumila (Lam.) K. Larsen. Their chemical structure was determined based on spectroscopic data interpretation and comparison with the reported data. The inhibitory effects of them on α-amylase and α-glucosidase were performed. The results showed that compounds 4, 6, 8, and 9 against potent α-glucosidase with the inhibition values of 98.14 ± 0.05, 98.19 ± 0.04, 97.01 ± 0.49, 84.43 ± 0.6% at 50 µM, respectively. Compounds 4 and 6 displayed significance against α-amylase at 200 µM with inhibition values of 22.35 ± 1.10 and 60.47 ± 0.91%.

Abstract
Carotenoids come in second among the most frequent natural pigments and are utilized in medications, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, food pigments, and feed supplements. Based on recent complementary work, Virgibacillus was announced for the first time as a member of Wadi El-Natrun salt and soda lakes microbiota, identified as Virgibacillus halodenitrificans, and named V. halodenitrificans DASH; hence, this work aimed to investigate several in vitro medicinal bioactivities of V. halodenitrificans DASH carotenoids. The carotenoid methanolic extract showed antioxidant activity based on diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging capacity with a half-maximal concentration (IC50) of 1.6 mg/mL as well as nitric oxide (NO) scavenging action expressed by an IC50 of 46.4 µg/mL. The extract showed considerable inhibitory activity for alpha-amylase (α-amylase) and alpha-glucosidase (α-glucosidase) enzymes (IC50 of 100 and 173.4 μg/mL, respectively). Moreover, the extract displayed selective anticancer activity against Caco-2 (IC50 = 138.96 µg/mL) and HepG-2 cell lines (IC50 = 31.25 µg/mL), representing colorectal adenocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma. Likewise, the extract showed 98.9 % clearance for human hepatitis C virus (HCV) using reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), HCV-NS5B polymerase activity inhibition (IC50 = 27.4 µg/mL), and selective inhibitory activity against human coronavirus (HCoV 229E) using the plaque reduction assay (IC50 = 53.5 µg/mL). As far as we can tell, the anticancer, antiviral, and antidiabetic attributes of Virgibacillus carotenoids are, de novo, reported in this work which accordingly invokes further exploration of the other medicinal, biotechnological, and industrial applications of Virgibacillus and haloalkaliphilic bacteria carotenoids.

Abstract
AIMS To assess the prevalence variation in pregnancy outcomes of the different phenotypes of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). MATERIALS Cohort, cross sectional and case control studies grouping together pregnant women with GDM, based on the results of oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) and reporting pregnancy outcomes in each group, were included. The primary outcomes were (i)large for gestational age and ii)hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). The secondary outcomes included (i)insulin treatment, ii)admission to neonatal intensive care unit, iii)preterm birth, iv)small for gestational age and v)caesarean section. The pooled proportions of the outcomes of interest were calculated for each phenotype. RESULTS 8 studies (n = 20.928 women with GDM) were included. The pooled prevalence of LGA, HDP and insulin treatment were 20 %, 8 % and 24 % respectively in women with abnormal fasting plasma glucose,10 %, 6 % and 9 % respectively in women with abnormal post-load plasma glucose and 14 %,14 % and 30 % in women with abnormal combined plasma glucose. CONCLUSIONS Pregnant women with abnormal fasting plasma glucose, present with the highest prevalence of LGA, while those with abnormal combined plasma glucose, present with the highest prevalence of HDP. Pregnant women with abnormal post-load plasma glucose present with the lowest need for insulin treatment.

Abstract
Our work is aimed at unraveling the role of the first-phase insulin secretion in the natural history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its interrelationship with insulin resistance and with β cell function and mass. Starting from pathophysiology, we investigate the impact of impaired secretion on glucose homeostasis and explore postmeal hyperglycemia as the main clinical feature, underlining its relevance in the management of the disease. We also review dietary and pharmacological approaches aimed at improving early secretory defects and restoring residual β cell function. Furthermore, we discuss possible approaches to detect early secretory defects in clinical practice. By providing a journey through human and animal data, we attempt a unification of the recent evidence in an effort to offer a new outlook on β cell secretion.

Abstract
The strategy of reducing carbohydrate digestibility by controlling the activity of two hydrolyzing enzymes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) to control postprandial hyperglycemia is considered as a viable prophylactic treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thus, the consumption of foods rich in hydrolyzing enzyme inhibitors is recommended for diet therapy of diabetes. Whole cereal products have gained increasing interests for plasma glucose-reducing effects. However, the mechanisms for whole cereal benefits in relation to T2DM are not yet fully understood, but most likely involve bioactive components. Cereal-derived phenolic compounds, peptides, nonstarch polysaccharides, and lipids have been shown to inhibit α-amylase and α-glucosidase activities. These hydrolyzing enzyme inhibitors seem to make whole cereals become nutritional strategies in managing postmeal glucose for T2DM. This review presents an updated overview on the effects provided by cereal-derived ingredients on carbohydrate digestibility. It suggests that there is some evidence for whole cereal intake to be beneficial in amelioration of T2DM through inhibiting α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities.

Abstract
This study investigated the preload effect of the medium and high glycemic index (GI) potato, as well as the combination of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (HG) and potato, when ingested prior to a rice meal, on the iso-carbohydrate basis. In a randomized crossover trial, 17 healthy female subjects consumed (1) rice; (2) co-ingestion of highly cooked potato (HP), and rice (HP + R); (3) co-ingestion of minimally cooked potato (MP) and rice (MP + R); (4) preload HP prior to rice meal (PHP + R); (5) preload MP prior to rice meal (PMP + R); (6) co-ingestion of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (HG), HP and rice (HG + HP + R); (7) preload HG prior to co-ingestion of HP and rice (PHG + HP + R); (8) co-preload of HG and HP prior to rice (PHG + PHP + R); and (9) preload of HP prior to co-ingestion of HG and rice (PHP + HG + R). Postprandial glycemic response (GR) tests and subjective satiety tests were conducted for each test food. Cooked potato as a preload to a rice meal could significantly cut the acute postprandial glycemic excursion by around 1.0 mmol/L, irrespective of the GI of the preload. Co-preload of partial hydrolyzed guar gum and highly cooked potato (PHG + PHP + R) resulted in improved acute GR in terms of peak glucose value and glycemic excursion compared with either HG preload or HP preload. All the meals with preload showed comparable or improved self-reported satiety. Within an equicarbohydrate exchange framework, both high-GI and medium-GI potato preload decreased the postprandial glycemic excursion in young healthy female subjects. The combination of HG and HP as double preload resulted in better GR than both single HG or HP preload did.
