Metabolic Syndrome and Menopause: The Impact of Menopause Duration on Risk Factors and Components

Purpose

This study was undertaken to investigate the impact of menopause duration on the risk factors and components of metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Patients and Methods

Women aged between 45 and 60 years participated in the study. Participants were split into two groups based on the duration of menopause. Women who had been menopausal for 1 to ≤5 years constituted Group 1, while women with 6-10 years of menopause duration formed Group 2.

Results

Significant differences were observed between the two groups for various factors associated with MetS, including anthropometric measurements, biochemical markers, and blood pressure. The conicity index, weight-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, visceral adiposity index (VAI), and menopause duration were associated with increased risk of MetS. Our multivariate logistic regression model showed that women with elevated VAI had a 2.073-fold (95% CI: 1.73-2.48, p<0.001) increased risk of MetS, while women with menopause duration more than 5 years had a 6.44-fold (95% CI: 3.336-12.45, p<0.001) increased risk of MetS.

Conclusion

The duration of menopause was found to be linked to a higher risk of MetS. Our results emphasize the importance of monitoring and managing metabolic health in women during the menopausal period, particularly those with extended menopause duration.

Obezite Polikliniğine Başvuran Hastalarda Hematolojik ve Biyokimyasal Parametrelerle Kardiyovasküler Risk Skorlarının Karşılaştırılması

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, obezite polikliniğine başvuran hastalarda; hematolojik ve biyokimyasal parametreler ile kardiyovasküler risk skorlamasının karşılaştırmalı değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı-kesitsel olarak planlanan bu araştırmada, Düzce Üniversitesi Araştırma ve Uygulama Hastanesinin Obezite Polikliniğine 2017-2018 yılları arasında başvuran hastaların, dosya verileri retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Hastaların yaş, cinsiyet, sigara kullanımları, DM tanılarının varlığı, BKİ (Beden kitle indeksi), NLR (Nötrofil-lenfosit oranı), MPV(ortalama platelet hacmi) ve RDW (eritrosit dağılım aralığı) değerleri geriye dönük olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Kardiyovasküler risk faktörleri Avrupa ve Türkiye Kardiyoloji Dernekleri risk skorlamasına göre değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Çalışmaya %75,1’i kadın, %24,9’u erkek, 631 katılımcı dahil edilmiştir. Yaş ortalaması 38,9±12,1 (min=21-maks=65) olarak bulunmuştur. Hastaların %19,2’sinin sigara kullandığı, %4,6’sında DM ve %36,9’unda insülin direnci olduğu görülmüştür. Katılımcıların %3,3’ü zayıf, %7,3’ü normal kilolu, %22,5’i fazla kilolu ve %66,9’u obezdir. Türkiye Kardiyoloji Derneği risk skorlamasına göre hastaların %51,4’i düşük , %20,5’i orta ve %28,1’i yüksek risklidir. Avrupa Kardiyoloji Derneği risk skorlamasına göre ise hastaların %83,5’i düşük, %10,9’u orta ve %5,5’i yüksek risklidir. The Current Findings on the Impact of Prenatal BPA Exposure on Metabolic Parameters: In Vivo and Epidemiological Evidence

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a multifactorial disease entity and is not fully understood. Growing evidence suggests that early exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) is a significant risk factor for the development of metabolic diseases. BPA is a monomer used in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics, thermal receipt paper, and epoxy resins. Owing to its widespread use, BPA has been detected in human fluids and tissues, including blood, placental breast milk, and follicular fluid. In the present review, we aimed to review the impact of prenatal exposure to different doses of BPA on metabolic parameters as determined by in vivo and epidemiological studies. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science electronic databases were searched to identify articles published during a period of 15 years from 2006 to 2021, and 29 studies met the criteria. Most studies demonstrated that prenatal exposure to low BPA concentrations correlated with alterations in metabolic parameters in childhood and an increased risk of metabolic diseases, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), in adulthood. Therefore, prenatal exposure to low doses of BPA may be associated with an increased risk of obesity and T2DM in a sex-specific manner.

Age and diet modify acute microhemorrhage outcome in the mouse brain

Cerebral microhemorrhages (CMHs) are considered as asymptomatic lesions, but might impair cognition in non-demented elderly individuals. The aging process includes poor vascular health, enhanced at midlife by metabolic disturbances upon high-fat diet (HFD). The onset of CMHs could thus have more serious consequences in midlife subjects with metabolic disturbances. This hypothesis was tested through the induction of multiple CMHs, using cyclodextrin nanoparticles injection, in mice at midlife (14 month old) or at a younger stage (5 month old) after 12 months or 3 months of normal diet or HFD (40% of animal fat) respectively. When induced at 14 months of age, CMHs were not larger but were more numerous (+25%) in mice on HFD compared with mice on normal diet. They slowed down the locomotor activity significantly but caused neither a change in the working memory nor a difference in the visual recognition memory decline. When induced at 5 months of age, CMHs provoked slighter locomotor and cognitive symptoms, regardless the diet. No spontaneous progression of CMHs toward larger hemorrhages was observed after onset when HFD was prolonged up to midlife. Consistently, no precipitated cognitive decline was observed. Middle-age plus time of metabolic disturbances represent enhanced risk factors for CMH outcome.
