Abstract
Acute pancreatitis is a potentially severe inflammatory disease that may be associated with a substantial morbidity and mortality. Currently there is no specific treatment for the disease, which indicates an ongoing demand for research into its pathogenesis and development of new therapeutic strategies. Due to the unpredictable course of acute pancreatitis and relatively concealed anatomical site in the retro-peritoneum, research on the human pancreas remains challenging. As a result, for over the last 100 years studies on the pathogenesis of this disease have heavily relied on animal models. This review aims to summarize different animal models of acute pancreatitis from the past to present and discuss their main characteristics and applications. It identifies key studies that have enhanced our current understanding of the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis and highlights the instrumental role of animal models in translational research for developing novel therapies.

Abstract
Johanson-Blizzard Syndrome (JBS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, distinct abnormal facial appearance and varying degrees of growth retardation. Variants in UBR1 gene are considered to be responsible for the syndrome. Here, we describe a 3-year old boy, who visited our clinic for severe growth retardation and frequent oily diarrhea. The physical examination revealed nasal alae aplasia, scalp defect, and maldescent of left testicle. Transabdominal ultrasound and computed tomography scan of his abdomen demonstrated complete fatty replacement of the pancreas. The clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings strongly suggest the diagnosis of hereditary pancreatitis. Whole exome sequencing revealed two rare compound heterozygous variants, c.2511T > G (p.H837Q) and c.1188T > G (p.Y396X), in the UBR1 gene of this boy, so, the diagnosis of JBS was established. This is the first report of Chinese patient with JBS, and our study indicates that transabdominal ultrasound and computed tomography are two useful and noninvasive imaging methods for the diagnosis and evaluation of JBS, and identification of these two novel variants expands the database of UBR1 gene variants. Furthermore, with the availability of the identification technology for these variants, prenatal diagnosis could be offered for future pregnancies.

Abstract
Acute pancreatitis is currently the most common cause of hospital admission among all nonmalignant gastrointestinal diseases. To understand the pathophysiology of the disease and as a potential step toward developing targeted therapies, attempts to induce the disease experimentally began more than 100 years ago. Recent decades have seen progress in developing new experimental pancreatitis models as well as elucidating many underlying cell biological and pathophysiological disease mechanisms. Some models have been developed to reflect specific causes of acute pancreatitis in human beings. However, the paucity of data relating to the molecular mechanisms of human disease, the likelihood that multiple genetic and environmental factors affect the risk of disease development and its severity, and the limited information regarding the natural history of disease in human beings make it difficult to evaluate the value of disease models. Here, we provide an overview of key models and discuss our views on their strengths for characterizing cell biological disease mechanisms or for identifying potential therapeutic targets. We also acknowledge their limitations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Acute and chronic pancreatitis are common gastroenterological disorders that have a fairly unpredictable long-term course often associated with unplanned hospital readmissions. Little is known about the factors that increase or decrease the risk for a hospital readmission. The aim of this study was to identify positive and negative predictive factors for hospital readmissions of patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis after in-hospital treatment. METHODS In a retrospective analysis data from the hospital information and reimbursement data system (HIS) were evaluated for 606 hospital stays for either acute or chronic pancreatitis between 2006 and 2011. Additional clinical data were obtained from a questionnaire covering quality of life and socio-economic status. A total of 973 patient variables were assessed by bivariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS Between 2006 and 2011, 373 patients were admitted for acute or chronic pancreatitis; 107 patients of them were readmitted and 266 had only one hospitalization. Predictors for readmission were concomitant liver disease, presence of a pseudocyst or a suspected tumor of the pancreas as well as alcohol, tobacco or substance abuse or coexisting mental disorders. Patients who had undergone a CT-scan were more susceptible to readmission. Lower readmissions rates were found in patients with diabetes mellitus or gallstone disease as co-morbidity. CONCLUSION While factors like age and severity of the initial disease cannot be influenced to reduce the readmission rate for pancreatitis, variables like alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse can be addressed in outpatient programs to reduce disease recurrence and readmission rates for pancreatitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of the present studies were to measure the concentrations of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and metallothionein and the Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity as elements engaged in an essential manner in the prooxidative and antioxidative balance of organism and to demonstrate the degree to which metallothionein and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase are involved in the inflammatory processes occurring in the pancreas. METHODS The concentration of metallothionein was measured by immunoenzymatic method. Serum Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity was determined using a commercial test. The measurements of Zn and Cu concentrations in serum were assessed with the use of flame atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS Lowered serum Zn concentration and higher Cu level were observed in the serum of patients with chronic exacerbated pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. The significant increase of metallothionein concentration and Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activity was observed in the blood of patients with chronic exacerbated pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. In slices of the pancreas during pancreatitis, we observed in immunohistochemical reaction the variable involvement of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase and metallothionein. CONCLUSIONS The results presented in these studies indicate an essential and variable involvement of antioxidants such Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase and metallothionein and disordered Cu and Zn homeostasis depending on the progression of inflammatory processes in patients with pancreatitis.
