Virtual Simulations to Replace Clinical Hours in a Family Assessment Course: Development Using H5P, Gamification, and Student Co-Creation

Exploring HTML5 Package Interactive Content in Supporting Learning Through Self-Paced Massive Open Online Courses on Healthy Aging: Mixed Methods Study

BACKGROUND

The rapidly aging population and the growth of geriatric medicine in the field of internal medicine are not supported by sufficient gerontological training in many health care disciplines. There is rising awareness about the education and training needed to adequately prepare health care professionals to address the needs of the older adult population. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) might be the best alternative method of learning delivery in this context. However, the diversity of MOOC participants poses a challenge for MOOC providers to innovate in developing learning content that suits the needs and characters of participants.

OBJECTIVE

The primary outcome of this study was to explore students' perceptions and acceptance of HTML5 package (H5P) interactive content in self-paced MOOCs and its association with students' characteristics and experience in using MOOCs.

METHODS

This study used a cross-sectional design, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. Participants, predominantly general practitioners from various regions of Indonesia with diverse educational backgrounds and age groups, completed pretests, engaged with H5P interactive content, and participated in forum discussions and posttests. Data were retrieved from the online questionnaire attached to a selected MOOC course. Students' perceptions and acceptance of H5P interactive content were rated on a 6-point Likert scale from 1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree). Data were analyzed using SPSS (IBM Corp) to examine demographics, computer literacy, acceptance, and perceptions of H5P interactive content. Quantitative analysis explored correlations, while qualitative analysis identified recurring themes from open-ended survey responses to determine students' perceptions.

RESULTS

In total, 184 MOOC participants agreed to participate in the study. Students demonstrated positive perceptions and a high level of acceptance of integrating H5P interactive content within the self-paced MOOC. Analysis of mean (SD) value across all responses consistently revealed favorable scores (greater than 5), ranging from 5.18 (SD 0.861) to 5.45 (SD 0.659) and 5.28 (SD 0.728) to 5.52 (SD 0.627), respectively. This finding underscores widespread satisfaction and robust acceptance of H5P interactive content. Students found the H5P interactive content more satisfying and fun, easier to understand, more effective, and more helpful in improving learning outcomes than material in the form of common documents and learning videos. There is a significant correlation between computer literacy, students' acceptance, and students' perceptions.

CONCLUSIONS

Students from various backgrounds showed a high level of acceptance and positive perceptions of leveraging H5P interactive content in the self-paced MOOC. The findings suggest potential new uses of H5P interactive content in MOOCs, such as interactive videos with pop-up questions, to substitute for synchronous learning. The study underscores the significance of tailored educational strategies in supporting the professional development of health care professionals.

PROTOCOL: Learner-educator co-creation of student assessment in health professional education courses: A scoping review protocol

This is a protocol for a Campbell Review following JBI scoping review methodology. The objectives are to answer the following questions: What has been reported in the literature about collaborative learner-educator design, implementation, or evaluation of learner assessment in health professional education? (1) Where is learner-educator co-creation of assessment occurring? (i.e., which disciplines, course types, level of learner, year of study). (2) What course assessment decisions are influenced or being made together? (i.e., assessment instructions and/or grades). (3) How much influence do learners have on decision-making? (i.e., where does it fall on Bovill and Bulley's ladder of participation). (4) How do learners and educators go about making decisions together? (i.e., discussion or voting, with a whole class or portion of the class). (5) What are the perceived benefits, disadvantages, barriers, and/or facilitators reported by the authors?

Instructional Design and Its Usability for Branching Model as an Educational Strategy

INTRODUCTION

Serious Games (SG) are an educational strategy used in the health professions with positive results in teaching diagnosis and facilitating the application of concepts and knowledge transfer. A type of SG is the branching scenario, which has the potential for a linear story or multiple options to achieve learning goals. There must be evidence for this type of SG's instructional design (InD) and usability.

OBJECTIVE

Propose an InD for the branching scenario and rate its usability.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We conducted a two-phase study. In the first phase, we drafted an InD based on the literature review, and then, we applied an expert validation process through a modified Delphi technique. With the consent of InD, we built five branching scenarios. In the second phase, we apply an instrument to measure the SG usability of the branching scenarios in a cross-sectional study with 216 undergraduate medical students.

RESULTS

A proposal for an InD for branching scenarios was elaborated. This InD has five dimensions with steps and definitions that help the designer fulfill the requirements for the SG. With the InD, we developed five branching scenarios for undergraduate medical students. Finally, the rates for the usability of the branchings had high scores. The branching SG with multiple options offers different outcomes for the same clinical problem in a single activity.

DISCUSSION

The proposal of a specific InD for branching scenarios considered SG theory and was tested, at least in user usability. The steps proposed include the specificity of the requirements of an SG, such as levels, checkpoints, avatars, and gameplay characteristics, among others, in contrast to the other InD that do not explicitly consider them. One of the limitations of this study is that we applied it only using the H5P software to develop branching scenarios with no other evidence of the performance of the InD in different contexts or platforms.

CONCLUSIONS

We propose using an InD to construct branching scenarios. This kind of SG has specific characteristics for its correct operation. Using structured steps in developing SG improves the probability of developing decision-making skills. Using an instrument to assess the usability of at least one dimension of the SG is also recommended to identify opportunity areas.

Can Virtual Simulation Replace Clinical Practical Training for Psychiatric Nursing?

In Korea, virtual simulation is currently replacing clinical practical training for psychiatric nursing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to explore the virtual simulation experiences of nursing students through focus-group interviews. Three categories were derived: 'glad that the patients were not real people', 'bridge between the text world and the real world', and 'supplementations needed for virtual simulation to replace clinical practice'. Although virtual simulation helped acquire knowledge and skills related to psychiatric nursing practice in a safe environment, there were limitations to replacing clinical practice. To overcome this, a diverse approach between students and professors is required.

Usefulness of Digital Game-Based Learning in Nursing and Occupational Therapy Degrees: A Comparative Study at the University of Burgos

Teaching in higher education in the 21st century is moving towards e-Learning or b-Learning teaching models. This situation has increased due to the SARS CoV-2 health crisis. Therefore, teaching–learning models must be based on the use of active methodologies that facilitate students’ motivation to work in learning management systems (LMS). One of the most current resources is the digital game-based learning (DGBL) use, specifically in health sciences degrees (e.g., nursing). In this study, we worked with 225 third-year students of degrees in nursing (ND) and occupational therapy (OTD). The objectives were (1) to find out if there were significant differences between students who had worked with DGBL techniques vs. those who had not, and (2) to find out if there were significant differences depending on the type of degree (ND vs. OTD) regarding access to the LMS, learning outcomes and students’ satisfaction with teachers’ performance. A mixed-method research approach was applied. In the quantitative study, significant differences were found in the accesses to the LMS in favor of the groups that had worked with DGBL techniques. Significant differences were also found in ND students with respect to learning outcomes in the group that worked with DGBL. Regarding the results of the qualitative study, differences were found in the frequency of interaction and in the preference of DGBL activities depending on the type of degree. Further studies will investigate the possible causes of these differences.
