Recent advances in cellulose- and alginate-based hydrogels for water and wastewater treatment: A review

From the environmental perspective, it is essential to develop cheap, eco-friendly, and highly efficient materials for water and wastewater treatment. In this regard, hydrogels and hydrogel-based composites have been widely employed to mitigate global water pollution as this methodology is simple and free from harmful by-products. Notably, alginate and cellulose, which are natural carbohydrate polymers, have gained great attention for their availability, price competitiveness, excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, and superior physicochemical performance in water treatment. This review outlined the recent progress in developing and applying alginate- and cellulose-based hydrogels to remove various pollutants such as dyes, heavy metals, oils, pharmaceutical contaminants, and pesticides from wastewater streams. This review also highlighted the effects of various physical or chemical methods, such as crosslinking, grafting, the addition of fillers, nanoparticle incorporation, and polymer blending, on the physiochemical and adsorption properties of hydrogels. In addition, this review covered the alginate- and cellulose-based hydrogels' current limitations such as low mechanical performance and poor stability, while presenting strategies to improve the drawbacks of the hydrogels. Lastly, we discussed the prospects and future directions of alginate- and cellulose-based hydrogels. We hope this review provides valuable insights into the efficient preparations and applications of hydrogels.

Adsorption Behavior of Methylene Blue Cationic Dye in Aqueous Solution Using Polypyrrole-Polyethylenimine Nano-Adsorbent

In this work, a polypyrrole-polyethyleneimine (PPy-PEI) nano-adsorbent was successfully synthesized for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution. Synthetic dyes are among the most prevalent environmental contaminants. A new conducting polymer-based adsorbent called (PPy-PEI) was successfully produced using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant. The PEI hyper-branched polymer with terminal amino groups was added to the PPy adsorbent to provide more effective chelating sites for dyes. An efficient dye removal from an aqueous solution was demonstrated using a batch equilibrium technique that included a polyethyleneimine nano-adsorbent (PPy-PEI). The best adsorption parameters were measured at a 0.35 g dosage of adsorbent at a pH of 6.2 and a contact period of 40 min at room temperature. The produced PPy-PEI nano-adsorbent has an average particle size of 25–60 nm and a BET surface area of 17 m²/g. The results revealed that PPy-PEI nano-composite was synthesized, and adsorption was accomplished in the minimum amount of time. The maximum monolayer power, qmax, for MB was calculated using the isothermal adsorption data, which matched the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetic adsorption data, which more closely fitted the Langmuir pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model was used to calculate the maximum monolayer capacity, or qmax, for MB, which was found to be 183.3 mg g⁻¹. The as-prepared PPy-PEI nano-adsorbent totally removes the cationic dyes from the aqueous solution.

Novel fabricated low-cost hybrid polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylpyrrolidone coated polyurethane foam (PAN/PVP@PUF) membrane for the decolorization of cationic and anionic dyes

Dyes are recalcitrait organic pollutants threatening the aquatic environment and human health. In the present study, a novel low-cost hybrid membrane was fabricated by coating polyurethane foam (PUF) with polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PAN/PVP) via phase inversion technique from casting solutions consisting of PAN and PVP with Dimethyl formamide (DMF) and applied for removal of cationic (Methylene Blue (MB)) and anionic (Methyl Orange (MO)) dyes from aqueous solutions. The as-prepared membrane was first characterized by Scan Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS), etc. Then, batch experiments were conducted to optimize the adsorption conditions, including contact time, adsorbent dose, dyes concentration, and pH. The dye removal results fitted with pseudo first and second-order kinetics; Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms' models. The maximum dye decolorization was approximately 97% and 95% within 60 and 120 min using 0.5 and 1 g of the fabricated composite for MB and MO, respectively. The kinetic studies showed rapid sorption dynamics following a second-order kinetic model. In addition, dye adsorption equilibrium data fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm with monolayer maximum adsorption capacity of 6.356 and 3.321 mg/g for MO and MB dye, respectively. Thus, the novel hybrid membrane is promising as a cheap and efficient adsorbent for the removal of both cationic and anionic dyes from wastewater. The current study demonstrated a new avenue to achieve efficient management of dyes in aquatic environments.

Highly selective magnetic dual template molecularly imprinted polymer for simultaneous enrichment of sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole from milk samples based on syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction

Antibiotics, such as sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole, are widely used in veterinary applications which can result in remains in edible animal products. Therefore, there is an immense need for a reliable, selective, sensitive, and simple analytical technique for monitoring the concentration of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfathiazole (STZ) in edible animal products. In this regard, we developed a magnetic dual template molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) to determine the SDZ and STZ in milk samples. For the sensitive and selective extraction and determination of target analytes, MMIPs have been combined with the syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction (SS-MSPME) method. In addition, we used central composite design (CCD) for the extraction of SDZ and STZ. With optimum conditions, an efficient, rapid, and convenient technique for the preconcentration and determination of SDZ and STZ in milk samples by SS-MSPME coupling with HPLC-UV was developed. Using our combined approach, the limits of detection are 0.9 and 1.3 ng mL^-1 for SDZ and STZ, respectively, along with good linearity and determination coefficients higher than 0.98. Our method demonstrates a practical approach for the deduction of antibiotics in milk samples with high recoveries and selectivity.

Adsorption behaviors on trace Pb2+ from water of biochar adsorbents from konjac starch

Biochar adsorbents used to treat different heavy metals in water are efficient and low-cost. Appropriate raw materials, excellent selectivity and detailed adsorption mechanism are of important for research on biochar adsorbents. In this work, konjac starch was dispersed in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solution to prepare different sizes hydrophilic carbon spheres (HCSs) by hydrothermal synthesis method. Adsorption kinetics of the HCSs towards Pb2+ is described perfectly by the pseudo-second-order equation. With the temperature increasing, adsorption thermodynamics are more consistent with the Freundlich model. The calculated ΔG, ΔH and ΔS shows the adsorption of the HCSs towards Pb2+ is a spontaneous, endothermic and entropy increase process. In addition, HCSs have excellent selectivity for the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+. HCSs prepared from konjac starch make full use of natural biomass resources, they can be used as a potential adsorbent material in treatment on heavy metal ion from water field.

Magnetic dual-template molecularly imprinted polymer based on syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction for selective enrichment of p-Coumaric acid and ferulic acid from pomegranate, grape, and orange samples

Magnetic dual-template molecularly imprinted polymer (Fe3O4@SiO2-MDMIP) was prepared to enrich and determine both p-Coumaric acid (p-CA) and ferulic acid (FA) based on syringe-to-syringe magnetic solid-phase microextraction (SS-MSPME). The obtained MDMIP was characterized and recognized, and then its adsorbing performance was studied. Based on the results, the Fe3O4@SiO2-MDMIP indicated selective recognition towards p-CA and FA with large adsorption capacity. The optimization of MDMIP-SS-MSPME conditions (pH, Fe3O4@SiO2-MDMIP mass, NaCl concentration, number of cycle, and elution volume) were conducted using the central composite design (CCD). Under the optimum conditions, an effectual and a convenient method was established to determine p-CA and FA in pomegranate, grapes, and orange samples based on SS-MSPME coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV). Our developed method showed the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.08 ng mL-1 for p-CA and 0.07 ng mL-1 for FA. The method also indicated good linearity with R2 > 0.99 and good recoveries of 85.12-94.96% with RSDs ≤ 5.58% spiked at three various concentration levels in pomegranate, grapes, and orange samples.

Selective and Recyclable Congo Red Dye Adsorption by Spherical Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Functionalized with 1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic Acid

In this study, the new material Fe3O4@BTCA has been synthesized by immobilization of 1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) on the surface of Fe3O4 NPs, obtained by co-precipitation of FeCl3.6H2O and FeCl2.4H2O in the basic conditions. Characterization by P-XRD, FE-SEM, and TEM confirm Fe3O4 has a spherical crystalline structure with an average diameter of 15 nm, which after functionalization with BTCA, increases to 20 nm. Functionalization also enhances the surface area and surface charge of the material, confirmed by BET and zeta potential analyses, respectively. The dye adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@BTCA has been investigated for three common dyes; Congo red (C.R), Methylene blue (M.B), and Crystal violet (C.V). The adsorption studies show that the material rapidly and selectively adsorbs C.R dye with very high adsorption capacity (630 mg/g), which is attributed to strong H-bonding ability of BTCA with C.R dye as indicated by adsorption mechanism study. The material also shows excellent recyclability without any considerable loss of adsorption capacity. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies suggest that the adsorption occurs by the Langmuir adsorption model following pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics.

Adsorptive Removal of Recalcitrant Auramine-O Dye by Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Functionalized Magnetite Nanoparticles: Isotherm, Kinetics, and Fixed-Bed Column Studies

Presently, the treatment of dye-polluted water is a challenging task worldwide. In this study, the adsorptive removal of Auramine-O (AO) dye by magnetite nanoparticles (MNs) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) functionalized MNs (SFMNs) were investigated. FESEM, HRTEM, EDX, and XRD were employed to characterize the MNs. In batch optimization, dye removal efficiency of 74% was obtained at contact time (40[Formula: see text]min), pH 6.5, sorbent dosage (20[Formula: see text]mg), and initial dye concentration (20[Formula: see text]mg/L). The maximum adsorption capacity of 55.56[Formula: see text]mg/g was estimated from Langmuir model and the isotherm data were fitted with Freundlich model ([Formula: see text]) for SFMNs. Pseudo-second-order kinetics was followed by both MNs and SFMNs for the adsorption of AO dye. The continuous AO dye adsorption was studied in fixed-bed column and the effects of bed height, influent flow rate, and initial dye concentration were investigated. The column performance was evaluated by breakthrough kinetic modeling and Yoon–Nelson model was fitted with the data. The results of this study showed that the surface modification of MNs using SDS enhanced the AO dye removal efficiency and SFMNs can be employed as an efficient nanoadsorbent for AO dye removal in batch and continuous mode of operation.

Enhanced dye removal using polymeric nanocomposite through incorporation of Ag doped ZnO nanoparticles: Synthesis and characterization

A facile method was approached to synthesize a new series of highly porous polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Ag-ZnO (AZO) grafted polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposites (PAPE/AZO) for investigation of the adsorption behavior of brilliant green dye (BG). The compositions of Ag (1, 3 and 5%) in AZO were varied to assess the influence of bimetallic oxide incorporation. The nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM analyses. The adsorption performance of the PAPE/AZO was assessed by various parametric changes viz. contact time, pH, temperature, concentration of the dye and adsorbent dosage. The highest adsorption capacity of 94.46 mg g^-1 was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.075 g adsorbent dosage, 70 mg L^-1 dye concentration, 1% AZO and pH 2. BET and BJH analyses of the nanocomposite confirmed the higher surface area and pore volume with lower amount of AZO that supported PAPE for enhanced dye removal. The Langmuir isotherm model fits the equilibrium conditions indicating a homogeneous distribution of active sites on the surface of the nanocomposite. Adsorption kinetic model ensued pseudo second order exhibiting chemisorption process. From the results, it is obvious that PAPE/AZO can be used as a potential core substance for treating real-time industrial dye effluents.

Tannic acid functionalized graphene hydrogel for organic dye adsorption

Water purification provides a feasible way to relieve the pressure of water shortage and water pollution which we are facing and adsorption is one of the most effective ways to turn polluted water into clean water. Here, we prepared graphene-tannic acid hydrogel using graphene oxide and tannic acid, a natural green reducer and adsorbent, through one-step hydrothermal method. The composition, structure, and morphology of the compounds were systematically examined. The adsorption of dyes was mainly influenced by the morphology and chemical properties of gel. The addition of tannic acid, a molecule rich in oxygen containing functional groups, changed the surface chemistry of graphene sheets and microstructures of gels, which was beneficial for contaminate adsorption. Compared with reduced graphene oxide hydrogel, the graphene-tannic acid hydrogel showed an outstanding adsorption capacity for organic dye methylene blue, more than 500 mg/g at pH 10 and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 714 mg/g. After adsorption, ethanol and inorganic acid solution can be used as desorption agent and there was no significant adsorption capacity loss after 5 cycles.
