Synthesis methods and applications of palladium nanoparticles: A review

Palladium (Pd) is a key component of many catalysts. Nanoparticles (NPs) offer a larger surface area than bulk materials, and with Pd cost increasing 5-fold in the last 10 years, Pd NPs are in increasing demand. Due to novel or enhanced physicochemical properties that Pd NPs exhibit at the nanoscale, Pd NPs have a wide range of applications not only in chemical catalysis, but also for example in hydrogen sensing and storage, and in medicine in photothermal, antibacterial, and anticancer therapies. Pd NPs, on the industrial scale, are currently synthesized using various chemical and physical methods. The physical methods require energy-intensive processes that include maintaining high temperatures and/or pressure. The chemical methods usually involve harmful solvents, hazardous reducing or stabilizing agents, or produce toxic pollutants and by-products. Lately, more environmentally friendly approaches for the synthesis of Pd NPs have emerged. These new approaches are based on the use of the reducing ability of phytochemicals and other biomolecules to chemically reduce Pd ions and form NPs. In this review, we describe the common physical and chemical methods used for the synthesis of Pd NPs and compare them to the plant- and bacteria-mediated biogenic synthesis methods. As size and shape determine many of the unique properties of Pd NPs on the nanoscale, special emphasis is given to the control of these parameters, clarifying how they impact current and future applications of this exciting nanomaterial.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Difference in toxicity of Pd (II) and mechanism of action before and after reduction by Bacillus wiedmannii MSM

At present, there are many studies on microbial reduction of Pd (II), although few of these studies assess the bacterial toxicity of Pd (II) before and after reduction by microorganisms. In this study, the toxicity of Pd (II) to Bacillus wiedmannii MSM (B. wiedmannii MSM) was assessed before and after reduction by live B. wiedmannii MSM cells (referred to as "Pd (0)-loaded cells") and after biosorption by dead B. wiedmannii MSM cells (referred to as "Pd (II)-loaded cells"). B. wiedmannii MSM is a widely occurring, nonpathogenic aerobic bacterium. Compared with Pd (II), the EC20, EC50, and EC80 of Pd (0)-loaded cells increased by 77.73-, 112.75-, and 163.91-fold, respectively, while the EC20, EC50, and EC80 of Pd (II)-loaded cells increased by only 11.55-, 9.77-, and 8.29-fold, respectively. The sterilization contribution rates of the mechanisms of action of Pd (0)-loaded cells were ranked in the order of: remaining Pd (II) > oxidative stress > physical puncture. Pd (II) was found to increase cell membrane permeability, glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme activity, and reactive oxygen species levels in cells and decrease the cell membrane potential. XPS results indicated that Pd (II) increased the content of polysaccharides and peptides and decreased the content of hydrocarbons in cells. These findings reveal the bactericidal mechanism of toxicity of Pd (II) and Pd (0)-loaded cells on Bacillus wiedmannii MSM and provide an environmentally friendly and inexpensive method for Pd (II) detoxification.

Intra/extracellular electron transfer for aerobic denitrification mediated by in-situ biosynthesis palladium nanoparticles

The slow electron transfer rate is the bottleneck to the biological wastewater treatment process, and the nanoparticles (NPs) has been verified as a feasible strategy to improve the biological degradation efficiency by accelerating the electron transfer. Here, we employed the Gram-positive Bacillus megaterium Y-4, capable of synthetizing Pd(0), to investigate the intra/extracellular electron transfer (IET/EET) mechanisms mediated by NPs in aerobic denitrification for the first time. Kinetic and thermodynamic results showed that the bio-Pd(0) could significantly promote the removal of both nitrate and nitrite by improving affinity and decreasing activation energy. The enzymic activity and the respiration chain inhibition experiment indicated that the bio-Pd(0) could facilitate the nitrate biotic reduction by improving the Fe-S center activity and serving as parallel H carriers to replace coenzyme Q to selectively increase the electron flux toward nitrate in IET, while promoting the nitrite reduction by abiotic catalysis. Most importantly, the detection of DPV peak at -226~-287 mV proved that the one-electron EET via multiheme cytochrome-bound flavins also occurred in Gram-positive bacteria and enhanced in Pd-loaded cells. In addition, the remarkable increase of the formal charge in EPS indicated that the bio-Pd(0) could act as an electron shuttle to increase the redox site in EPS, eventually accelerating the electron hopping in long-distance electron transfer. Overall, this study expanded our understanding of the roles of bio-Pd(0) on the aerobic denitrification process and provided an insight into the IET/EET of Gram-positive strains.

Phytostabilization of Polluted Military Soil Supported by Bioaugmentation with PGP-Trace Element Tolerant Bacteria Isolated from Helianthus petiolaris

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are major environmental pollutants, and the accumulation of these elements in soils and plants is of great concern in agricultural production due to their toxic effects on crop growth. Also, these elements can enter into the food chain and severely affect human and animal health. Bioaugmentation with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can contribute to an environmentally friendly and effective remediation approach by improving plant survival and promoting element phytostabilization or extraction under such harsh conditions. We isolated and characterised Pb and Cd-tolerant root-associated bacteria from Helianthus petiolaris growing on a Pb/Cd polluted soil in order to compose inoculants that can promote plant growth and also ameliorate the phytostabilization or phytoextraction efficiency. One hundred and five trace element-tolerant rhizospheric and endophytic bacterial strains belonging to eight different genera were isolated from the aromatic plant species Helianthus petiolaris. Most of the strains showed multiple PGP-capabilities, ability to immobilise trace elements on their cell wall, and promotion of seed germination. Bacillus paramycoides ST9, Bacillus wiedmannii ST29, Bacillus proteolyticus ST89, Brevibacterium frigoritolerans ST30, Cellulosimicrobium cellulans ST54 and Methylobacterium sp. ST85 were selected to perform bioaugmentation assays in greenhouse microcosms. After 2 months, seedlings of sunflower (H. annuus) grown on polluted soil and inoculated with B. proteolyticus ST89 produced 40% more biomass compared to the non-inoculated control plants and accumulated 20 % less Pb and 40% less Cd in the aboveground plant parts. In contrast, B. paramycoides ST9 increased the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of Pb three times and of Cd six times without inhibiting plant growth. Our results indicate that, depending on the strain, bioaugmentation with specific beneficial bacteria can improve plant growth and either reduce trace element mobility or enhance plant trace element uptake.

The effect of biotic and abiotic environmental factors on Pd(II) adsorption and reduction by Bacillus megaterium Y-4

In this study, we screened a new aerobic bacterium (Bacillus megaterium Y-4) that can efficiently reduce Pd(II) with different electron donors. The best electron donor was sodium formate and the best reduction of Pd(II) were by log growth phase cells. The high removal capacity of Pd(II) (1658.3 mg/g) was obtained with 30 mg/L dry cell weight and 50 mg/L Pd (II) in the presence of 5 mM sodium formate. The removal amount of Pd(II) increased with initial Pd(II) concentrations ranging from 50 to 200 mg/L with 100 mg/L Pd(II) being completely removed by 148 mg/L dry cell weight in 6 h. The cell wall, periplasmic space and intracellular contents of B. megaterium Y-4 contains different kinds of enzymes for reducing Pd(II). In addition, the activity of extracellular and periplasmic enzymes was more sensitive to temperature than intracellular enzymes. XRD and XPS analysis revealed that the enzyme for reducing Pd(II) in B. megaterium Y-4 can tolerate a broad range of temperatures (20-60 °C) and pH (2.0-7.0) but was sensitive to oxygen. TEM analysis showed that biogenic palladium nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) were mainly distributed evenly in the periplasmic space of the live cells and were released from cells into aqueous solution, which reduced the toxicity of Pd(II), allowing Pd-NP recovery without cell destruction. B. megaterium Y-4 is a potential bacterium for efficient treatment and reclamation of Pd(II) pollution and formation of Pd-NPs.
