The effects of EDTA on plant growth and manganese (Mn) accumulation in Polygonum pubescens Blume cultured in unexplored soil, mining soil and tailing soil from the Pingle Mn mine, China

Effects of sulfate on the photosynthetic physiology characteristics of Hydrocotyle vulgaris under zinc stress

The effects of sulfate on the zinc (Zn) bioaccumulation characteristics and photophysiological mechanisms of the ornamental plant Hydrocotyle vulgaris were explored using a hydroponic culture under three Zn concentrations (300, 500 and 700mgL-1 ) with (400μmolL-1 ) or without the addition of sulfate. Results showed that: (1) tissue Zn concentrations and total Zn contents increased with increasing hydroponic culture Zn concentrations; and sulfate addition decreased Zn uptake and translocation from roots to shoots; (2) Zn exposure decreased photosynthetic pigment synthesis, while sulfate changed this phenomenon, especially for chlorophyll a under 300mgL-1 Zn treatment; (3) Zn exposure decreased photosynthetic function, while sulfate had positive effects, especially on the photosynthetic rate (Pn ) and stomatal conductance (Gs ); and (4) chlorophyll fluorescence parameters related to light energy capture, transfer and assimilation were generally downregulated under Zn stress, while sulfate had a positive effect on these processes. Furthermore, compared to photosynthetic pigment synthesis and photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence was more responsive, especially under 300mgL-1 Zn treatment with sulfate addition. In general, Zn stress affected photophysiological processes at different levels, while sulfate decreased Zn uptake, translocation, and bioaccumulation and showed a positive function in alleviating Zn stress, ultimately resulting in plant growth promotion. All of these results provide a theoretical reference for combining H. vulgaris with sulfate application in the bioremediation of Zn-contaminated environments at the photophysiological level.

Release and mobility characteristics of thallium from polluted farmland in varying fertilization: Role of cation exchange

Batch and column leaching tests were used to study thallium's release and migration behaviour and evaluate its potential toxicity risks in soil. The results indicated that leaching concentrations of Tl using TCLP and SWLP were much higher than the threshold, indicating a high risk of thallium pollution in the soil. Furthermore, the intermittent leaching rate of Tl by Ca²⁺ and HCl reached its maximum value, demonstrating the easy release of Tl. After HCl leaching, the form of Tl in the soil has changed, and ammonium sulfate has increased its extractability. Additionally, the extensive application of calcium promoted the release of Tl, increasing its potential ecological risk. Spectral analysis showed that Tl was mainly present in minerals such as Kaolinite and Jarosite, and exhibited significant adsorption capacity for Tl. HCl and Ca²⁺ damaged the crystal structure of the soil, greatly enhancing the migration and mobility of Tl in the environment. More importantly, XPS analysis confirmed that the release of Tl (I) in the soil was the leading cause of increased mobility and bioavailability. Therefore, the results revealed the risk of Tl release in the soil, providing theoretical guidance for its pollution prevention and control.

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Complex Physiological Response and Gene Regulation in Peanut Roots and Leaves under Manganese Toxicity Stress

Excess Manganese (Mn) is toxic to plants and reduces crop production. Although physiological and molecular pathways may drive plant responses to Mn toxicity, few studies have evaluated Mn tolerance capacity in roots and leaves. As a result, the processes behind Mn tolerance in various plant tissue or organ are unclear. The reactivity of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) to Mn toxicity stress was examined in this study. Mn oxidation spots developed on peanut leaves, and the root growth was inhibited under Mn toxicity stress. The physiological results revealed that under Mn toxicity stress, the activities of antioxidases and the content of proline in roots and leaves were greatly elevated, whereas the content of soluble protein decreased. In addition, manganese and iron ion content in roots and leaves increased significantly, but magnesium ion content decreased drastically. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in peanut roots and leaves in response to Mn toxicity were subsequently identified using genome-wide transcriptome analysis. Transcriptomic profiling results showed that 731 and 4589 DEGs were discovered individually in roots and leaves, respectively. Furthermore, only 310 DEGs were frequently adjusted and controlled in peanut roots and leaves, indicating peanut roots and leaves exhibited various toxicity responses to Mn. The results of qRT-PCR suggested that the gene expression of many DEGs in roots and leaves was inconsistent, indicating a more complex regulation of DEGs. Therefore, different regulatory mechanisms are present in peanut roots and leaves in response to Mn toxicity stress. The findings of this study can serve as a starting point for further research into the molecular mechanism of important functional genes in peanut roots and leaves that regulate peanut tolerance to Mn poisoning.

Plant growth and heavy meal accumulation characteristics of Spathiphyllum kochii cultured in three soil extractions with and without silicate supplementation

A hydroponic method was conducted to test whether Spathiphyllum kochii is tolerant to multiple HMs as well as to evaluate whether sodium silicate promotes plant growth and alleviates HM stress mainly by assessing biomass, HM accumulation characteristics and antioxidant enzyme activities (AEAs). Three soil extractions from an uncontaminated soil, a comparable lightly HM-contaminated soil (EnSE), and a comparable heavily HM-contaminated soil (ExSE) with or without 1 mM sodium silicate supplementation were used. S. kochii showed no obvious symptoms when cultured in EnSE and ExSE, indicating that it was a multi-HM-tolerant species. The biomass and photosynthesis followed the order: UnSE > EnSE > ExSE, but the opposite order was found for HM concentration, AEAs, and malondialdehyde content. Silicate had no effects on the growth and HM bioaccumulation characteristics of S. kochii cultured in UnSE but exhibited a novel role in decreasing HM uptake by 13.61-41.51% in EnSE and ExSE, respectively, corresponding upregulated AEAs, and reduced malondialdehyde contents, resulting in increased biomass and alleviating HM stress. The activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were upregulated by an increase in soil extraction HM concentration and further upregulated by silicate supplementation, indicating that they were important mechanisms alleviating HM stress in S. kochii.

NTA-assisted mineral element and lead transportation in Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack

Lead (Pb) is one of the most toxic and harmful pollutants to the environment and human health. Centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack.), an excellent ground cover plant for urban plant communities, exhibits the outstanding lead tolerance and accumulation. Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) is an environmentally friendly chelating agent that strengthens phytoremediation. This study explored the effects of different NTA concentrations on the absorption and transportation of mineral elements and Pb in centipedegrass. Following exposure to Pb (500 μM) for 7 days in hydroponic nutrient solution, NTA increased root Mg, K, and Ca concentrations and shoot Fe, Cu, and Mg concentrations and significantly enhanced the translocation factors of mineral elements to the shoot. Although NTA notably decreased root Pb absorption and accumulation, it significantly enhanced Pb translocation factors, and the Pb TF value was the highest in the 2.0 mM NTA treatment. Furthermore, the shoot translocation of Pb and mineral elements was synergistic. NTA can support mineral element homeostasis and improve Pb translocation efficiency in centipedegrass. Regarding root radial transport, NTA (2.0 mM) significantly promoted Pb transport by the symplastic pathway under the treatments with low-temperature and metabolic inhibitors. Meanwhile, NTA increased apoplastic Pb transport at medium and high Pb concentrations (200-800 μM). NTA also enhanced the Pb radial transport efficiency in roots and thus assisted Pb translocation. The results of this study elucidate the effects of NTA on the absorption and transportation of mineral elements and Pb in plants and provide a theoretical basis for the practical application of the biodegradable chelating agent NTA in soil Pb remediation.

Complexation of Amino Acids with Cadmium and Their Application for Cadmium-Contaminated Soil Remediation

The interaction of amino acids with toxic heavy metals influences their immobilization and bioavailability in soils. However, the complexation ability of amino acids with Cd has not been well studied. The complexes of amino acids and cadmium were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) analyses. The complex structures were found to be [COc, COc] for fatty amino-cadmium and PheCd2+, [COc, COc, COs] for GluCd2+ and ThrCd2+, respectively. The complex energy of these conformers followed the order PheCd2+> AlaCd2+ > LeuCd2+ > GluCd2+ > GlyCd2+ > ThrCd2+. Importantly, all of the complex energy values were less than zero, indicating that these complexes could be easily dissolved in water. The Cd2+ concentration decreased with increasing amino acid concentration in aqueous solution. The complex stability constants (logβ) followed the order PheCd2+> AlaCd2+ > LeuCd2+ > GluCd2+ > GlyCd2+ > ThrCd2+, consistent with the order of the calculated complex energy values. The Cd removal efficiencies by Thr, Glu, Gly, Ala, Leu, and Phe were 38.88%, 37.47%, 35.5%, 34.72%, 34.04%, and 31.99%, respectively. In soil batch tests, the total Cd concentration in soil decreased in the presence of amino acids, while the Cd concentration in water increased from 231.97 μg/L to 652.94~793.51 μg/L. The results of sequential extraction showed that the acid-extractable fraction and the reducible fraction of Cd sharply decreased. Consequently, the significant features of amino acids along with their biocompatibility make them potentially applicable chelators in Cd-contaminated soil remediation processes.

Demonstration gardens with EDTA-washed soil. Part III: Plant growth, soil physical properties and production of safe vegetables

In previous reports large-scale EDTA-based soil washing using ReSoil® technology was demonstrated. In the current study, we established a vegetable garden with nine raised beds (4 × 1 × 0.5 m), three with original (contaminated) soil, three with remediated soil, and three with remediated soil vitalized by addition of vermicompost, earthworms, and rhizosphere inoculum. The garden was managed in 6 rotations between July 2018 and November 2019. Buckwheat was sown first as a green manure followed by spinach, lamb's lettuce, chicory, garlic, onion, leek, lettuce, carrot, kohlrabi and spinach again. Buckwheat growth on the remediated soil was reduced by half. Throughout the gardening process there were no remarkable differences in bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, available water capacity, and aggregate stability of the original and remediated soil. Biomass yield and plant performance, as measured by NDVI, also remained similar regardless of soil treatment. Remediation reduced Pb concentration in edible parts of vegetables from 76 (garlic) to 95% (kohlrabi), Zn concentration from 14 (lettuce) to 76% (first cutting of chicory), and Cd concentration from 33% (carrot) to 91% (leek and second cutting of chicory). The transfer of metals from soil to root and from root to shoot occurred in the order: Pb < Zn < Cd. The bioconcentration of toxic metals in edible plant parts was generally lower in the remediated soils. Application of ReSoil® technology and growing vegetables that exclude metals, especially Cd, has potential for safe food production on remediated soils. Vitalization had little effect on the properties of the remediated soil.

Effects of dominant plant growth on the nutrient composition and bacterial community structure of manganese residues

The rhizospheres of three dominant plant species (Miscanthus floridulus, Buddleja lindleyana, and Erigeron annuus) growing in manganese residue disposal sites in eastern Guizhou Province, China, were analyzed to study the effects of plant growth on the nutrient levels and bacterial community structure of two types of manganese residues. The results showed that the growth of the three species improved the nutritional composition of manganese residues; the available nitrogen (AN) contents of the manganese mine residue significantly increased by 29.56-60.78% while the available phosphorus (AP) contents of the electrolytic manganese residue significantly increased by 30.24-44.41% compared to those in unvegetated manganese residue. The diversity of the bacterial community in the manganese mine residue increased significantly due to plant growth. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla in both manganese residues. Sphingomonas and GP6 were the dominant bacterial genera. The relative abundance of the Firmicutes phylum was significantly higher in the manganese mine residue than in the control and that of the Thiobacillus genus was lower, which indicated improvements in the microenvironment. Correlation analysis showed that OM and AN were the main nutrient factors affecting the bacterial community structure in the manganese mine residue.Novelty statement At present, research on the phytoremediation of manganese residue disposal sites focuses mostly on the investigation of different plant types and their heavy metal accumulation and transformation characteristics. However, comparative studies of the differences in growth matrix characteristics between plant growth areas and exposed areas are lacking. In addition, dominant plant species are regionally distributed. The previous studies were mostly concentrated in Chongqing, Guangxi, and Hunan in China. The eastern region of Guizhou Province is located in the "Manganese Triangle" area of China, where the manganese resources account for about 50% of the national total. There is no report on the phytoremediation of manganese residue disposal sites in this region. Therefore, the rhizospheres of three dominant plant species (Miscanthus floridulus, Buddleja lindleyana, and Erigeron annuus) growing in manganese residue disposal sites in eastern Guizhou Province, China, were analyzed to study the effects of plant growth on the nutrient levels and bacterial community structure of two types of manganese residues (manganese mine residue and electrolytic manganese residue). This study could provide useful theoretical information to benefit the ecological restoration of manganese residue disposal sites.

Study of pollutant accumulation characteristics and microbial community impact at three bioretention facilities

In this paper, three bioretention facilities (BT, RG1-A, and RG1-B) were selected for on-site testing and experimental analysis. Of which, BT is a roadside bioretention tank with layered filler, while RG1-A and RG1-B are rain gardens with conventional filler (Bioretention soil media, BSM) and modified filler (BSM+10% Water treatment residuals,WTR), respectively. The effect of pollutant accumulation on the soil microbial community structure in the facilities, and the risk of heavy metal contamination over several years of bioretention facility operation were studied. Results showed that the water quality pollutant load reduction in BT was fluctuating. This is related  to the poor water quality of road stormwater flowing into BT and the facility filler. Because RG1-B uses modified filler, RG1-B was more effective than RG1-A in regulating water quality and quantity; the changes in soil physical and chemical properties in BT, RG1-A, and RG1-B were influenced by external factors. Next, BT was at high risk of heavy metal contamination than other facilities. The microbial community structure of the facility had the following characteristics: at the phylum level, Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in the bioretention facility, accounting for 29-45%; and at the genus level, Blastocatella was the dominant phylum, and the relative abundance in situ was higher than that in the bioretention facility. The results of the correlation analysis combining filler environmental factors and microbial community structure indicated that SMC was a highly influential factor among the three facilities.

Hydrocotyle vulgaris L.: a new cadmium-tolerant landscape species and its physiological responses to cadmium exposure

Landscape plants have both ecological and aesthetic value and may also represent ideal candidates for phytoremediation. In the present study, one round of hydroponic culture for 14 days with different cadmium (Cd) concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg L^-1 Cd) was carried out to test whether Hydrocotyle vulgaris L. is a Cd-tolerant plant. Furthermore, physiological parameters, including pigment concentrations, photosynthesis, antioxidant enzyme activities (AEAs), and nutrient uptake, were also examined to determine the tolerance of H. vulgaris to Cd exposure. The results showed that H. vulgaris could grow normally under all Cd supply levels. The Cd removal efficiency reached 100% at Cd concentrations ≤1.0 mg L^-1. The concentrations of Cd in roots and shoots increased (P < 0.05) with Cd supplementation. The maximum concentrations of Cd reached 26.4 and 118 mg kg^-1 in shoots and roots, respectively. The translocation factor values were similar under all Cd treatments. The highest mean daily increase in biomass (MDIB) was obtained under 1 mg L^-1 Cd exposure, which increased by 69.86% compared to that in the control, which may be due to the increased photosynthetic pigments, photosynthetic rate, and the consistent nutrient concentrations under this Cd level, as there were positive relationships between these parameters and MDIB. Moreover, the activities of AEA also generally explicated highest among all Cd levels. All these results indicate that the above physiological parameters play a positive role in promoting plant growth and alleviating Cd stress. In summary, H. vulgaris was verified as a potential Cd-tolerant plant, providing new information for Cd phytoremediation. Furthermore, given its extensive habitat distribution, this species might be tested for phytoremediation of contaminated soils in future work.

A novel role of sulfate in promoting Mn phytoextraction efficiency and alleviating Mn stress in Polygonum lapathifolium Linn

A hydroponic method was performed to explore the effects of sulfate supply on the growth, manganese (Mn) accumulation efficiency and Mn stress alleviation mechanisms of Polygonum lapathifolium Linn. Three Mn concentrations (1, 8 and 16 mmol L^-1, representing low (Mn1), medium (Mn8) and high (Mn16) concentrations, respectively) were used. Three sulfate (S) levels (0, 200, and 400 μmol L^-1, abbreviated as S0, S200 and S400, respectively) were applied for each Mn concentration. (1) The average biomass (g plant^-1) of P. lapathifolium was ordered as Mn8 (6.36) > Mn1 (5.25) > Mn16 (4.16). Under Mn16 treatment, S addition increased (P < 0.05) biomass by 29.96% (S200) and 53.07% (S400) compared to that S0. The changes in the net photosynthetic rate and mean daily increase in biomass were generally consistent with the changes in biomass. (2) Mn accumulation efficiency (g plant^-1) was ordered as Mn8 (99.66) > Mn16 (58.33) > Mn1 (27.38); and S addition increased (p < 0.05) plant Mn accumulation and Mn transport, especially under Mn16 treatment. (3) In general, antioxidant enzyme activities (AEAs) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in plant leaves were ordered in Mn16 > Mn8 > Mn1. Sulfate addition decreased (P < 0.05) AEAs and MDA under Mn16 treatment, while the changes were minor under Mn1 and Mn8 treatments. (4) Amino acid concentrations generally increased with increasing Mn concentration and S level. In summary, the medium Mn treatment promoted plant growth and Mn bioaccumulation; sulfate, especially at 400 µmol L^-1 S, can effectively promote plant growth and Mn accumulation efficiency. The most suitable bioremediation strategy was Mn16 with 400 µmol L^-1 S.

Removal of inorganic contaminants in soil by electrokinetic remediation technologies: A review

The soil contaminated by inorganic contaminants including heavy metals, radioactive elements and salts has been posing risks for human health and ecological environment, which has been widely paid attention in recent years. The electrokinetic remediation (EKR) technology is recognized as the most potential separation technology, which is commonly used to clean sites that are contaminated with organic and inorganic contaminants. It is the most suitable remediation technology for low permeability porous matrices. The main transport mechanism of pollutants in EKR include electromigration, electroosmosis and electrophoresis, coupled with electrolysis and geochemical reactions. Although arduous endeavors have been carried out to build optimal operating conditions and reveal the mechanism of EKR process, a systematic theoretical foundation hasn't been sorted yet. A comprehensive review on electrokinetic remediation of inorganic contaminants in soil is given in this study, and a more systematic theoretical foundation is sorted out according to the latest theoretical achievements. This theoretical system mainly focuses on the scientific and practical aspects of the application of EKR technology in soil remediation, by which we try to dig into the core of this technology. It contains key motive power of electric phenomena, side effects, energy consumption and supply, and removal of heavy metals, radioactive elements and salts in soil during EKR. In addition, correlations between dehydration, crystallization effect, focusing effect and thermal effect are disclosed; optimal operating conditions for the removal of heavy metals by EKR and EKR coupled with PRB are discussed and sorted out. Also discussed herein is the relationship between energy allocation and energy saving. According to the related findings, some potential improvements are also proposed.

Phosphate: Coupling the functions of fertilization and passivation in phytoremediation of manganese-contaminated soil by Polygonum pubescens blume

Phosphate (P) fertilization is a commonly used agronomic practice. However, research on bioremediation is very limited. This study's principal objective was to evaluate the role of P in the growth and heavy metals (HMs) accumulation of Polygonum pubescens Blume cultured in Mn-contaminated soil. To this end, the effects of sodium dihydrogen phosphate (SDP) and single superphosphate (SSP) on the growth, Mn bioremediation efficiency, organ HMs, and physiological parameters related to antioxidant stress of P. pubescens were examined. The results showed that both SDP and SSP increased soil pH and available P but decreased available HMs. Phosphate significantly (P < 0.05) promoted P. pubescens height and biomass. Average height increased by 36.1% and 32.6% with SDP and SSP, respectively, with corresponding biomass increases of 71.8% and 135%. Phosphate significantly (P < 0.05) reduced Mn concentrations, especially in leaves, where the values decreased by >50.0% for DSP and SSP. Total Mn significantly (P < 0.05) decreased with DSP amendment but significantly (P < 0.05) increased by 38.5% with SSP (200 mg kg^-1) through an increase in biomass. Phosphate significantly (P < 0.05) decreased all organ HM concentrations and translocation, indicating that less HM stress occurred with P amendment. The changes in reactive oxygen species, antioxidants and non-antioxidant materials further supported these results. Pearson correlation analysis revealed negative relationships between soil available P and HMs, indicating a novel role of P in HM passivation. The uncommonly high Ca concentrations in leaves suggested that Ca plays a vital role in promoting growth and alleviating HM stress in P. pubescens, which warrants further study.

Performance of new biodegradable chelants in enhancing phytoextraction of heavy metals from a contaminated calcareous soil

Chelant-assisted phytoextraction has widely been exploited as a feasible option for removing heavy metals from the contaminated soils. Some synthetic chelants have shown promising performances for this option, but they have also revealed several negative environmental consequences. This study has sought to investigate the feasibility of two biodegradable eco-friendly chelants, namely methylglycinediacetic acid (MGDA) and N,N-Bis(carboxymethyl)-L-glutamic acid (GLDA), as compared to the resistant ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), in enhancing phytoextraction of Zn and Pb from a contaminated calcareous soil. For this purpose, a greenhouse experiment was carried out comparing the growth and metal absorption of maize (Zea mays L.) grown on soils treated with EDTA, MGDA, and GLDA chelants at 2, 4 and 8 mmol kg^- 1 levels. Results showed that the heavy metal uptakes by the plant shoots generally increased with increasing the chelant application level. Pb uptake by maize shoots increased from 10.6 mg plant^- 1 in control to 416, 398, and 416 mg plant^- 1 in the soils treated with 8 mmol kg^- 1 MGDA, GLDA, and EDTA, respectively. The corresponding increases in Zn uptake were from 100.9 mg plant^- 1 to 798.9, 718.9, and 530.4 mg plant^- 1 in the MGDA-, GLDA-, and EDTA-amended soils, respectively. Moreover, the amounts of water-extractable, and thereby potentially leachable, Pb and Zn in the post-harvest soil were considerably greater in the soil treated with EDTA than those treated with MGDA and GLDA. Therefore, MGDA and GLDA would be potential alternatives to environmentally-persistent EDTA for enhanced metal phytoextraction from contaminated soils.

Effect of enhancers on the phytoremediation of soils polluted by pyrene and Ni using Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf.)

Remediation of heavy metal and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-co-contaminated soils has drawn much more attention; phytoremediation is an often-used technique. Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf.) with developed root system and strong PAHs and heavy metal tolerance is a potential choice for phytoremediation. In this study, the application of tea saponin (TS) (1 g kg^-1 soil) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) (1 g kg^-1 soil) was to improve the removal efficiency of Ni and pyrene. TS and NTA had no obvious effects on the growth and soluble proteins of Sudan grass. Ni concentration in root was higher than that in the shoot. The addition of TS and NTA increased the Ni concentration in the root by 25.98% in Ni-contaminated treatment. Pyrene was mainly accumulated in the shoot of Sudan grass. Pyrene concentration in shoot increased by 20.14% with TS-NTA in pyrene-contaminated treatment and increased by 31.97% in Ni-contaminated treatment. TS and NTA had significantly improved dissolved organic matter and soil microbial activity. Microbial activity increased by 16.75%, 18.07%, and 23.364% in pyrene-contaminated, Ni-contaminated, and pyrene and Ni-co-contaminated treatment, respectively. This study showed that phytoremediation of pyrene and Ni-co-contaminated soil by Sudan grass could be enhanced by the application of TS-NTA and the interaction between pyrene and Ni impacted the accumulation of Ni and pyrene in Sudan grass.

Heavy metal concentration, potential ecological risk assessment and enzyme activity in soils affected by a lead-zinc tailing spill in Guangxi, China

In 1976, a tailing dam collapse accident at the Xingping Lead-Zinc Mine in Guangxi Province, China, led to the spillage of mining wastewater and sludge into downstream agricultural lands in Side Village. Heavy metal concentrations, soil pollution and soil enzyme activity were analysed to understand the pollution characteristics of the agricultural lands along the Side stream by this accident. The tailing soil (TS), natural forest soil without spill contamination (NFS) and four representative agricultural soils were selected. The four agricultural soil sites located at the entrance of the stream to the agricultural soil (EnS), the upstream region (US), the middle stream (MS) and at the exit of the stream (ExS) from the village, respectively. The results showed that the soil pH values and heavy metal concentrations were in the order of tailing soil TS > ExS > MS > US > EnS > NFS. The concentration of Pb ranked highest among the analysed elements followed by Zn, Cd, Mn and Cu. The concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cd Mn and Cu 10530.41, 1708.58, 8.32, 885.61 and 104.51 mg kg^-1, respectively. Soil pollution assessments by single pollution index, synthesis pollution index and individual/comprehensive potential ecological risk analysis explicated all the soils reached the heavily polluted level and presented extremely high ecological risk grades. Pb, Zn and Cd were the dominant pollutants. The soil enzyme activities of invertase, protease and urease exhibited the opposite distribution pattern as those of the heavy metal concentrations, while the inversely results were observed for the activity of catalase.

Investigation of plant species and their heavy metal accumulation in manganese mine tailings in Pingle Mn mine, China

Mine tailings are a characteristic of landscapes where mineral extraction has occurred and provide a prime opportunity for vegetation succession. In this study, soil heavy metal concentrations, plant composition and biodiversity, heavy metal accumulation, and their relationships were studied in the tailings of the Pingle Mn mine (abandoned for over 15 years) in South China. The total heavy metal concentrations ranged from 440 to 15,590 mg kg^-1 for Mn, 5.01 to 20.7 mg kg^-1 for Cd, 101 to 319 mg kg^-1 for Pb, 546 to 1693 mg kg^-1 for Zn, and 116 to 180 mg kg^-1 for Cu. According to soil contamination assessment by single contamination indexes and the Nemerow multifactor index, the tailing soil had a heavy pollution level. According to ecological risk assessment by monomial potential ecological risk factors and potential ecological risk indexes, the tailing soil presented a high ecological risk level, to which Cd was the key contributor. A total of 13 plant species from 2 families (Gramineae and Compositae) successfully colonized the tailings. Importance values based on relative height, relative coverage, relative abundance, and relative frequency indicated that Neyraudia reynaudiana K. and Paspalum orbiculare F. were the dominant species. The species were multi-metal-tolerant species, and most of them were shoot accumulators, as their translocation factor values were above 1. Plants exhibited the highest bioconcentration factor for Pb, and the average values for roots, stems, and leaves were 2.56, 1.45, and 1.70, respectively. There were positive relationships (P < 0.01) between soil Mn, Cd, Zn, and Cu and plant Pb; similar results were found for soil heavy metals and leaf/stem Mn. The species composition in the tailings of the Pingle Mn mine was reflective of long-term vegetation succession, and the results obtained in this study provide insight for selecting plant species and reconstruction practices for Mn wasteland restoration.

Comparative analysis of the seed germination of pakchoi and its phytoremediation efficacy combined with chemical amendment in four polluted soils

The seed germination plant growth parameters and level of heavy metal accumulation were investigated in pakchoi cultured in four contaminated soils with different levels of heavy metals supplemented with citric acid (CA) or calcium phosphate (CP). Results showed that the seed germination energy, germination percentage and germination index parameters were similar, while the seed vigor (SV) significantly (p < 0.05) decreased as the soil pollution level increased. The lengths of the shoots and roots presented the same trend as SV. All the seedlings grew in heavily polluted soil without any amendments before harvesting; therefore, no plant material was available for subsequent analyses. The photosynthesis parameters of pakchoi cultured in lightly polluted soil without amendment (LPS), lightly polluted soil with CA (LPSA) and moderately polluted soil with CP (MPSP) were similar. The concentrations of Pb, Zn, Mn, Cu and Cd in the shoots, roots and whole plants were in the order of MPSP > LPSA > LPS. Pakchoi cultured in MPSP showed the most promising results in terms of plant height, biomass and heavy metal accumulation. Pakchoi presented the highest translocation and bioaccumulation factors for Cd and the lowest for Pb.HighlightsSoil pollution and the type of chemical amendment had no effect on the seed germination of pakchoi.Citric acid addition in lightly polluted soil improved pakchoi growth and heavy metal extraction.Pakchoi cultured in moderately polluted soil with calcium phosphate amendment presented the highest biomass and heavy metal concentration.

A critical review on environmental implications, recycling strategies, and ecological remediation for mine tailings

Mine tailings, generated from the extraction, processing, and utilization of mineral resources, have resulted in serious acid mine drainage (AMD) pollution. Recently, scholars are paying more attention to two alternative strategies for resource recovery and ecological reclamation of mine tailings that help to improve the current tailing management, and meanwhile reduce the negative environmental outcomes. This review suggests that the principles of geochemical evolution may provide new perspective for the future in-depth studies regarding the pollution control and risk management. Recent advances in three recycling approaches of tailing resources, termed metal recovery, agricultural fertilizer, and building materials, are further described. These recycling strategies are significantly conducive to decrease the mine tailing stocks for problematic disposal. In this regard, the future recycling approaches should be industrially applicable and technically feasible to achieve the sustainable mining operation. Finally, the current state of tailing phytoremediation technologies is also discussed, while identification and selection of the ideal plants, which is perceived to be the excellent candidates of tailing reclamation, should be the focus of future studies. Based on the findings and perspectives of this review, the present study can act as an important reference for the academic participants involved in this promising field.

Effects of PASP/NTA and TS on the phytoremediation of pyrene-nickel contaminated soil by Bidens pilosa L

Bidens pilosa L. (B. pilosa) is considered as an effective phytoremediation plant. In this study, polyaspartic acid (PASP), aminotriacetic acid (NTA) and tea saponin (TS) was combined with B. pilosa. to strengthen the phytoremediation efficiency. The removal rate of pyrene reached 95.8% with B. pilosa alone. The release of Ni in NTA and NTA-TS treatments was 20-30 times than untreated contaminant soil. The Ni concentration in roots of B. pilosa increased by 63.1% and 58.6% in PASP and PASP-TS treatments, respectively. The Ni concentration in leaves of B. pilosa increased by 55.9% and 186% in NTA and NTA-TS treatments, respectively. The growth of B. pilosa was significantly promoted in PASP and PASP-TS treatments. PASP, NTA and TS significantly promoted soil microbial activities. The results showed that B. pilosa was beneficial to pyrene removal. PASP and NTA had positive effects on absorption of Ni by B. pilosa.
