Efficient removal of total arsenic (As 3+/5+) from contaminated water by novel strategies mediated iron and plant extract activated waste flowers of marigold. CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 313:137551. Abstract
In this investigation, marigold flower-waste was activated with iron salts (MG-Fe), subsequently marigold plant extract (MG-Fe-Ex) for the adsorptive elimination of As3+ and As5+ from contaminated water. The governing factor such as medium pH, temperature, pollutant concentration, reaction time, adsorbent dose were considered for the study. The complete elimination of As3+/5+ was recorded with MG-Fe-Ex at pH 8.0, 90 min, 30 °C, dose 4 g/L, 20 mg/L of As3+/5+ and shaking rate 120 rpm, while under the identical experimental condition, MG-Fe exhibited 98.4% and 73.3% removal for As5+ and As3+, respectively. The MG-Fe-Ex contains iron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) as a result of iron ions reaction with plant bioactive molecules as evident from x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopic (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic study. The adsorption data of As3+/5+ on MG-Fe and MG-Fe-Ex was best fitted by pseudo-first order kinetic and freundlich isotherm except As5+ adsorption on MG-Fe-Ex that can be described by langmuir isotherm model. The prevailing mechanism in adsorption of As3+/5+ on both adsorbent might be hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction and complexation. From the above, it is confirmed that MG-Fe-Ex adsorbent has high potential and can be used for the adsorptive elimination of As3+/5+ from contaminated water in sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Abstract
Evidence collected to date by our group has demonstrated that tin(II)-functionalized hydroxyapatites (Sn/HAP) are a newly discovered class of ecofriendly reductive adsorbents for Cr(VI) removal from wastewaters. In this work an upgraded series of Sn/HAP materials assured a maximum removal capacity of ≈ 20 mgCr/g, doubling the previously reported value for Sn/HAP materials, thanks to higher Sn-dispersion as proved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Insights on kinetics and thermodynamics of the reductive adsorption process are provided and the influence of pH, dosage, and nature of Cr(VI) precursors on chromium removal performances have been investigated. Pseudo-second-order kinetics described the interfacial reductive adsorption process on Sn/HAP, characterized by low activation energy (21 kJ mol-1), when measured in the 278-318 K range. Tests performed in the 2-6 pH interval showed similar efficiency in terms of Cr(VI) removal. Conventional procedures of recycling and regeneration resulted ineffective in restoring the pristine performances of the samples due to surface presence of both Sn(IV) and Cr(III). To overcome these weaknesses, the used samples (Sn + Cr/HAP) were upcycled into catalysts in a circular economy perspective. Used samples were tested as catalysts in gas-phase catalytic processes for air pollution remediation: selective catalytic reduction of NOx (NH3-SCR), NH3 selective catalytic Oxidation (NH3-SCO), and selective catalytic oxidation of methane to CO2. Catalytic tests enlightened the interesting activity of the upcycled Sn + Cr/HAP samples in catalytic oxidation processes, being able to selectively oxidize methane to CO2 at relatively low temperature.

Abstract
Isolation of a functional lignin-degrading Bacillus aryabhattai. Production of growth-associated LiP and MnP enzymes. Almost 84% KL degradation at 500 mg L−1 KL concentration. KL biodegradation process was revealed by chemical analysis.
Kraft lignin (KL), is the major pollutant in pulp and paper effluent and due to its heterogeneous structure, it is resistant to the depolymerization process. It has drawn much attention from the researcher due to its challenging degradation process. In this study, a KL-degrading bacterium was isolated and screened from paper mill sludge. This bacterium was identified as ligninolytic Bacillus aryabhattai using biochemical and 16SrRNA gene analysis. B. aryabhattai showed maximum activities of lignin peroxidase-LiP (0.74 IU mL−1) and manganese peroxidase-MnP (9.2 IU mL−1) on the 4th day, and 5th day, respectively. A total 84% of KL (500 mg L−1) reduction was observed after 14 days. The KL bio-degradation was confirmed based on changes in chemical stracture of KL and new metabolites identification using FTIR and GC–MS, respectively. The study concluded that B. aryabhattai maybe becomes a potential biological agent in KL biodegradation and treatment of other lignin-containing industrial effluents.

Abstract
A straightforward, largely instrument-free, smartphone-based analytical strategy for hexavalent chromium and lysine (Lys) on-site detection via exploitation of dual-emission carbon quantum dots (DECQDs) has been demonstrated. DECQDs show dual-emission peaks at 439 and 630 nm with the excitation at 375 nm. As a dual-mode detection probe, the fluorescence and ultraviolet adsorption spectra of DECQDs vary with hexavalent chromium concentrations. Most importantly, Lys can restore the fluorescence of the hexavalent chromium added DECQD nanoprobe and change the color of the probe under natural light. At the same time, based on the participation of smartphones, the prepared DECQD probes favor the establishment of visual smart sensors that can also be used for the in-situ detection of targets. The on-site quantitative analysis exhibited a linear range of 5.3-320 μM with a detection limit of 1.6 μM towards Cr(VI) and the differentiation of Lys variation from 1 to 75 mM with a detection limit of 0.3 mM. The probe has been applied for the first time to enable vision-based colorimetric in complex samples such as water, milk and egg. The recoveries of Cr(VI) and Lys in real samples were between 90 and 104%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was as low as 0.4%. This work offers new perspectives for fundamental understanding and new design of functional luminescent materials that are applicable for food-safety and rapid and intelligent inspection. A straightforward, large instrument-free, smartphone-based analytical strategy with dual-emission carbon quantum dots was developed for hexavalent chromium and Lys on-site detection via fluorescent and colorimetric twofold readout measure.

Abstract
Cr(VI)-imprinting thiosemicarbazide-functionalized sodium alginate (IIPTSC@SA) microspheres were fabricated to achieve the good selective adsorption for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution containing multiple ions. The selective adsorption and reusability of IIPTSC@SA microsphere were intensively investigated. The results showed that the grafting conditions of thiosemicarbazide were optimized at 0.2 g of TSC at 60 °C for 5 h and the ion-imprinting conditions at 100 mL of 2 wt % glutaraldehyde at 60 °C for 6 h. IIPTSC@SA microspheres exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity of 252.5 mg/g and good selectivity to remove Cr(VI) from multi-ion coexisting water. The adsorption process complied with a monolayer adsorption by virtue of chemical interactions together with endothermic spontaneously. After eight adsorption-desorption, the adsorption capacity and selectivity of IIPTSC@SA microspheres remained relatively stable.

Abstract
Biofilm formation ability of bacteria makes them potential in the field of tannery effluent treatment. However, the hazardous nature of effluent and environmental conditions may disturb the biofilm formation ability of bacteria which ultimately affects their effluent treatment efficiency. Accordingly, we isolated and characterized biofilm-forming bacteria Bacillus vallismortis (MT027009), Bacillus haynesii (MT027008), and Alcaligenes aquatilis (MT027005) from tannery sludge and examined them for biofilm formation under variable environmental conditions. Biofilm formation in tryptic soy broth (TSB) at different incubation times (24-120 h) revealed that the biofilm formation activity of the strain B. haynesii was not affected by incubation time, whereas the increase in biofilm formation was observed in the case of B. vallismortis (28 %) and A. aquatilis (52 %) after 48 h. The medium pH (pH 5.0-9.0) had a limited effect on biofilm formation except in the case of A. aquatilis at pH 5.0 (94 %) and pH 9.0 (80 %). Furthermore, compared to the controls (only TSB), the strains B. vallismortis, B. haynesii, and A. aquatilis showed enhanced biofilm formation in undiluted tannery effluent (28, 33, and 21 %) and 25 mg L-1 Cr(VI) (23 %, 48 % 32 %). The biofilm structure was influenced by Cr(VI) as revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The results of Cr(VI) bioreduction studies suggest that bacterial biofilm (60-99 %) has a greater potential to remove Cr(VI) than planktonic cells (43-94 %). The results of the study provide important data on biofilm formation by indigenous bacteria in effluent environment conditions, making them potential isolates for tannery effluent treatment.

Abstract
Remediating the agricultural soil polluted by cadmium (Cd) is a serious issue in China. Hydrochar showed its potential to purify Cd-contaminated water and improve Cd-contaminated soil due to its vast amounts of macro- and microporous structures. In this study, three concentration gradients of nitric acid (HNO3, mass fraction: 5%, 10%, 15%) were implemented to age pristine wheat straw hydrochar (N0-HC) aiming to improve surface physiochemical properties. Four HNO3-aging hydrochars named N0-HC, N5-HC, N10-HC, N15-HC were used to both remove Cd2+ from aqueous solution and improve soil properties. Results showed that HNO3-aging significantly improved the Cd2+ adsorption capacity by 1.9-9.9 folds compared to crude hydrochar due to the increased specific surface area (by 1.5-6.5 folds) and oxygen-containing functional group abundance (by 4.5-22.1%). Besides, initial solution pH of 8 or environmental temperature of 318.15 K performed the best Cd2+ adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the process of Cd2+ adsorption was fitted best to pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.95) and Langmuir models (R2 = 0.98), respectively. Nanjing 46 (Oryza sativa L) and HNO3-aging hydrochars were furtherly applied into Cd-contaminated paddy soil to investigate the mitigation of Cd translation from soil to rice. N15-HC-1% (w/w) performed the best effect on reducing cadmium accumulation in various parts of rice plants. Overall, this research provided an approach to improve hydrochar capacity to remove Cd2+ from aqueous solution and mitigate Cd translation from soil to rice.

Abstract
Designing exceptional probes to detect minute quantities of chromium(vi) is of huge importance for the safety and health of the human race. In this study, a green fluorescence emission probe (polyethylene Schiff base-chelated Fe2+ complex) was synthesized by a one-pot synthesis method for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Cr(vi) in an aqueous solution. The complex of polyethylene Schiff-Fe2+ was fully characterized, and it displayed satisfactory stability in the aqueous solution. The fluorescence emission could be quenched specifically by the introduction of Cr(vi) via the oxidation of the Fe2+-centered polyethylene Schiff base complex. The fluorescence intensity decreases linearly with the concentration of Cr(vi), and the corresponding detection limit was calculated to be 0.18 μM. Thus, the obtained fluorescence detection system could be used for Cr(vi) detection in tap water. These features provide potential uses of the as-prepared polyethylene Schiff-Fe2+ complex as a sensor for environmental applications.

Abstract
In the present study, Mentha plant ash was modified by Na and Al for the synthesis of adsorbent and applied for the removal of Fluoride from an aqueous solution. Mixture of acid washed Mentha plant ash (MPA) and NaOH (in the ratio 1:1.3) thermally treated at 600°C in a muffle furnace then treated with aqueous solution of sodium aluminate. The characterization of sodium aluminum modified ash (Na-Al-MA) powder was done such as SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), Particle Size Analysis (PSA), Fourier transformed spectroscopy (FTIR), Zeta Potential, XRD (X-ray Diffraction) analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The removal of fluoride from an aqueous solution carried out with Na-Al-MA by batch adsorption process. The Na-Al-MA was found to be very effective as adsorbent. The maximum removal of fluoride was achieved ̴ 86% at neutral pH and at room temperature. It was investigated that Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic was best fitted for fluoride adsorption. The fluoride adsorption on Na-Al-MA was an exothermic process. A possible mechanism including electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and metal-fluoride interaction for fluoride adsorption on Na-Al-MA have described in this study. Novelty statement: Utilization of Mentha plant ash for the development of adsorbent and its application in adsorptive removal of fluoride from aqueous solution is the novelty of this work. Adsorbent preparation may be the better way of waste biomass management.

Abstract
Xanthan integrated graphene oxide functionalized by titanium dioxide was successfully prepared through facile, eco-friendly and cost effective ice-templating technique. The three-dimensional (3D) graphene composite demonstrated relatively high temperature stability, chemical functionalities and porous sponge-like structure. The adsorption of lead was favored by high initial concentration and shaking speed at the operational solution pH. The process equilibrium and kinetic adhered to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order correlations, respectively. The biomass integrated graphene composite showed maximum adsorption capacities ranging from 132.18 to 199.22 mg/g for 30-70 °C. Moreover, it was highly regenerable under mild conditions (0.1 M hydrochloric acid, 30 °C) and used repeatedly while retaining 84.78% of its initial adsorption capacity at the fifth adsorption-regeneration cycle. With comparatively high lead adsorption capacities, adequate recyclability and environmentally friendliness, the as-prepared 3D graphene composite has high application potential in heavy metal-wastewater separation for protection of the environment and human health.

Abstract
Microbially-aged hydrochar were prepared to investigate how aging affected their ability to remove Cd2+ from aqueous solutions. Based on aging time in an anaerobic fermenter, four samples were produced: HC, M20-HC, M40-HC, and M60-HC. Results indicated increases in specific surface area, pH, and negative charge on hydrochar surface with aging process. Also, there were a decrease in O/C and an increase in surface functional groups, such as -COOH. The adsorption experiments confirmed the positive correlation between aging time and adsorption performance. The 60-day-aged M60-HC treatment displayed the maximum adsorption capacity, which was 3.8 times higher than that of HC. The Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic equations fitted well with isothermal and kinetic data, respectively. Thermodynamic study indicated that Cd2+ adsorption is dominated by chemisorption. This study showed that microbial aging process is an effective and promising measure to improve hydrochar adsorption capacity for Cd2+.
