Abstract
BACKGROUND Research has showcased a correlation between disruptions in gut microbiota and primary membranous nephropathy (pMN), giving rise to the concept of the 'gut-kidney axis'. However, the precise relationship between gut microbiota and pMN remains elusive. Hence, this study endeavors to investigate whether a causal relationship exists between gut microbiota and pMN utilizing Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS The primary method employed for MR analysis is the inverse variance weighting method, supplemented by MR-Egger and the weighted median method, to infer causality. This approach was validated within the pMN cohort across two distinct populations. RESULTS At the species level, the abundance of Bifidobacterium bifidum and Alistipes indistinctus was negatively correlated with the risk of pMN. Conversely, pMN was positively associated with Bacilli abundance at the class level, Lachnospiraceae abundance at the family level, and Dialister abundance at the genus level. Specifically, at the species level, pMN was positively correlated with the abundance of Ruminococcus lactaris, Dialister invisus, and Coprococcus_sp_ART55_1. CONCLUSION These findings lay the groundwork for future research exploring the interplay between pMN and the gut microbiota, with substantial implications for the prevention and treatment of pMN and its associated complications.

Abstract
Microcystins (MCs) and nitrites are coexisted in the environment and have reproductive toxicity. The combined toxic effect and mechanism of MCs and nitrite on spermatogenesis remain largely unclear. In the present study, co-exposure to microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR) and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) aggravated testicular damage of Balb/c mice and mitochondrial impairment of spermatogonia, Sertoli cells, and sperm. Furthermore, MC-LR and NaNO2 reduced sperm density with a synergistic effect. In addition, MC-LR and NaNO2 synergistically induced oxidative stress in the reproductive system by decreasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutathione (GSH) levels and increasing levels of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). More importantly, mitoquidone mesylate (MitoQ), an inhibitor of mtROS, blocked MC-LR and NaNO2-induced spermatogonia and Sertoli cell apoptosis by inhibiting high expression of Bax, Fadd, Caspase-8, and cleaved-Caspase-3. On the other hand, MitoQ suppressed pyroptosis of Sertoli cells by inhibiting the expression of NLRP3, N-GSDMD, and cleaved-Caspase-1. Additionally, MitoQ alleviated co-exposure-induced sperm density reduction and organ index disorders in F1 generation mice. Together, co-exposure of MC-LR and NaNO2 can enhance spermatogenic disorders by mitochondrial oxidative impairment-mediated germ cell death. This study emphasizes the potential risks of MC-LR and NaNO2 on reproduction in realistic environments and highlights new insights into the cause and treatment of spermatogenic disorders.

Abstract
Intestinal fibrosis is a long-term complication of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Changes in microbial populations have been linked with the onset of fibrosis and some food additives are known to promote intestinal inflammation facilitating fibrosis induction. In this study, we investigated how polysorbate 80, sucralose, titanium dioxide, sodium nitrite and maltodextrin affect the gut microbiota and the metabolic activity in healthy and IBD donors (patients in remission and with a flare of IBD). The Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) with a static (batch) configuration was used to evaluate the effects of food additives on the human intestinal microbiota. Polysorbate 80 and sucralose decreased butyrate-producing bacteria such as Roseburia and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Both compounds, also increased bacterial species positively correlated with intestinal inflammation and fibrosis (i.e.: Enterococcus, Veillonella and Mucispirillum schaedleri), especially in donors in remission of IBD. Additionally, polysorbate 80 induced a lower activity of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in the three groups of donors, which can affect the intestinal homeostasis. Maltodextrin, despite increasing short-chain fatty acids production, promoted the growth of Ruminococcus genus, correlated with higher risk of fibrosis, and decreased Oscillospira which is negatively associated with fibrosis. Our findings unveil crucial insights into the potential deleterious effects of polysorbate 80, sucralose and maltodextrin on human gut microbiota in healthy and, to a greater extent, in IBD patients.

Abstract
Ozone (O3) is one of the most harmful pollutants affecting health. However, the potential effects of O3 exposure on microbes in the gut-lung axis related to lung injuries remain elusive. In this study, female mice were exposed to 0-, 0.5- and 1-ppm O3 for 28 days, followed by routine blood tests, lung function tests and histopathological examination of the colon, nasal cavity and lung. Mouse faeces and lungs were collected for 16s rRNA sequencing to assess the overall microbiological profile and screen for key differential enriched microbes (DEMs). The key DEMs in faecal samples were Butyricimonas, Rikenellaceae RC9 and Escherichia-Shigella, whereas those in lung samples were DNF00809, Fluviicola, Bryobacter, Family XII AD3011 group, Sharpea, MND1 and unclassified Phycisphaeraceae. After a search in microbe-disease databases, these key DEMs were found to be associated with lung diseases such as lung neoplasms, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory distress syndrome and bronchiectasis. Subsequently, we used transcriptomic data from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) with exposure conditions similar to those in this study to cross-reference with Comparative Toxicogenomic Database (CTD). Il-6 and Ccl2 were identified as the key causative genes and were validated. The findings of this study suggest that exposure to O3 leads to significant changes in the microbial composition of the gut and lungs. These changes are associated with increased levels of inflammatory factors in the lungs and impaired lung function, resulting in an increased risk of lung disease. Altogether, this study provides novel insights into the role of microbes present in the gut-lung axis in O3 exposure-induced lung injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between intestinal microbiome and colorectal cancer (CRC) progression is unclear. This study aims to identify the intestinal microbiome associated with CRC progression and construct predictive labels to support the accurate assessment and treatment of CRC. METHOD The 192 patients included in the study were divided into stage I-II and stage III-IV CRC patients according to the pathological stages, and preoperative stools were collected from both groups for 16S rDNA sequencing of the intestinal microbiota. Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation coefficient analysis were used to analyze the differential intestinal microbiome and the correlation with tumor microenvironment and to predict the functional pathway. XGBoost model (XGB) and Random Forest model (RF) were used to construct the microbiome-based signature. The total RNA extraction from 17 CRC tumor simples was used for transcriptome sequencing. RESULT The Simpson index of intestinal microbiome in stage III-IV CRC were significantly lower than those in stage I-II CRC. Proteus, Parabacteroides, Alistipes and Ruminococcus etc. are significantly enriched genus in feces of CRC patients with stage III-IV. ko00514: Other types of O - glycan biosynthesis pathway is relevant with CRC progression. Alistipes indistinctus was positively correlated with mast cells, immune activators IL-6 and IL6R, and GOBP_PROTEIN_FOLDING_IN_ENDOPLASMIC_RETICULUM dominantly. The Random Forest (RF) model and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model constructed with 42 CRC progression-associated differential bacteria were effective in distinguishing CRC patients between stage I-II and stage III-IV. CONCLUSIONS The abundance and diversity of intestinal microbiome may increase gradually with the occurrence and progression of CRC. Elevated fetal abundance of Proteus, Parabacteroides, Alistipes and Ruminococcus may contribute to CRC progression. Enhanced synthesis of O - glycans may result in CRC progression. Alistipes indistinctus may play a facilitated role in mast cell maturation by boosting IL-6 production. Alistipes indistinctus may work in the correct folding of endoplasmic reticulum proteins in CRC, reducing ER stress and prompting the survival and deterioration of CRC, which may owe to the enhanced PERK expression and activation of downstream UPR by Alistipes indistinctus. The CRC progression-associated differential intestinal microbiome identified in our study can be served as potential microbial markers for CRC staging prediction.

Abstract
The fish-flower symbiosis model is an eco-friendly sustainable farming technology combining plants, fish and microorganisms in a recirculating aquaculture system. However, there are few studies on the structure and diversity of microbial communities in fish intestines, culture water and plant roots during fish-flower symbiosis. Here, we cultured carp (Cyprinus carpio), crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) with mint (Mentha spicala L.) and extracted total genomic DNA from intestinal microorganisms, culture-water microorganisms and root microorganisms for each fish species for high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Analysis of microbial community structure and diversity revealed changes in abundance of microbial genera in the intestines and culture water of each fish species, including changes in the dominant taxa. Pirellula, Truepera, Aquincola, Cetobacterium and Luteolibacter were widespread in the fish intestine, culture water and mint root system. This study revealed the effects of mint feeding on the structure and diversity of microbial communities of fish, water bodies and the mint root system during fish-flower symbiosis, providing a theoretical reference for the promotion and application of fish-flower (mint) symbiosis technology and healthy fish culture technology.

Abstract
The gut microbiota has been confirmed as an important part in human health, and is even take as an 'organ'. The interaction between the gut microbiota and host intestinal environment plays a key role in digestion, metabolism, immunity, inflammation, and diseases. The dietary component is a major factor that affects the composition and function of gut microbiota. Food additives have been widely used to improve the color, taste, aroma, texture, and nutritional quality of processed food. The increasing variety and quantity of processed food in diets lead to increased frequency and dose of food additives exposure, especially artificial food additives, which has become a concern of consumers. There are studies focusing on the impact of food additives on the gut microbiota, as long-term exposure to food additives could induce changes in the microbes, and the gut microbiota is related to human health and disease. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize the interaction between the gut microbiota and food additives.

Arsenite is a well-documented neurotoxic metalloid that widely distributes in the natural environment. However, it remains largely unclear how arsenite affects neurological function. Therefore, in this study, the healthy adult male mice were exposed to 0.5 mg/L and 5 mg/L arsenite through drinking water for 30 and 90 days, respectively. Our results showed that there was no significant alteration in the intestine and brain for 30 days exposure, but exposure to arsenite for 90 days significantly induced a reduction of locomotor activity and anxiety-like behavior, caused pathological damage and inflammatory responses in the brain and intestine. We also found that arsenite remarkably disrupted intestinal barrier integrity, decreased the levels of lysozyme and digestive enzymes. Intriguingly, chronic exposure to arsenite significantly changed the levels of gut-brain peptides. Taken together, this study provides meaningful insights that gut-brain communication may involve in the neurobehavioral impairments of arsenite.

Abstract
The sensing of food contaminants is essential to prevent their adverse health effects on the consumers. Electrochemical sensors are promising in the determination of electroactive analytes including food pollutants, biomolecules etc. Graphene nanomaterials offer many benefits as electrode material in a sensing device. To further improve the analytical performance, doped graphene or derivatives of graphene such as reduced graphene oxide and their nanocomposites were explored as electrode materials. Herein, the advancements in graphene and its derivatives-based electrochemical sensors for analysis of food pollutants were summarized. Determinations of both organic (food colourants, pesticides, drugs, etc.) and inorganic pollutants (metal cations and anions) were considered. The influencing factors including nature of electrode materials and food pollutants, pH, electroactive surface area etc., on the sensing performances of modified electrodes were highlighted. The results of pollutant detection in food samples by the graphene-based electrode have also been outlined. Lastly, conclusions and current challenges in effective real sample detection were presented.
