Estimation and analysis of net primary productivity by integrating MODIS remote sensing data with a light use efficiency model

Impacts of Climate Change and Land Use/Cover Change on the Net Primary Productivity of Vegetation in the Qinghai Lake Basin

The Qinghai Lake Basin acts as a natural barrier, preventing the western desert from spreading eastward. This is an important link in preserving the ecological stability of the northeastern region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Therefore, quantitative research into the net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation and its driving force in the Qinghai Lake Basin is required. The effects of land use/cover change (LUCC) and climate change on NPP in the Qinghai Lake Basin were studied using R-contribution ratio and partial correlation analysis methods using MOD17A3H products, Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) data, and meteorological data. (1) The LULC of the Qinghai Lake Basin showed a trend that "the area of grassland, cultivated land, and unused land continued to decrease, while the area of other LULC types increased" from 2000 to 2020, according to the study's findings. Grassland, water bodies, construction land, and unused land dominated the mutual transformation of LULC types. (2) The NPP of the basin showed a growing trend, with a growth rate of 3.93 gC·m^-2·a^-1 before 2010 and 0.88 gC·m^-2·a^-1 after 2010. Significant regional heterogeneity was found in NPP, with gradients decreasing from southeast to northwest. (3) The impact of LUCC on overall NPP changes had gradually increased. Climate change has been the primary driver of NPP changes in the Qinghai Lake Basin over the last 20 years.

Spatio-Temporal Evolution, Future Trend and Phenology Regularity of Net Primary Productivity of Forests in Northeast China

Net Primary Productivity (NPP) is one of the significant indicators to measure environmental changes; thus, the relevant study of NPP in Northeast China, Asia, is essential to climate changes and ecological sustainable development. Based on the Global Production Efficiency (GLO-PEM) model, this study firstly estimated the NPP in Northeast China, from 2001 to 2019, and then analyzed its spatio-temporal evolution, future changing trend and phenology regularity. Over the years, the NPP of different forests type in Northeast China showed a gradual increasing trend. Compared with other different time stages, the high-value NPP (700–1300 gC·m−2·a−1) in Changbai Mountain, from 2017 to 2019, is more widely distributed. For instance, the NPP has an increasing rate of 6.92% compared to the stage of 2011–2015. Additionally, there was a significant advance at the start of the vegetation growth season (SOS), and a lag at the end of the vegetation growth season (EOS), from 2001 to 2019. Thus, the whole growth period of forests in Northeast China became prolonged with the change of phenology. Moreover, analysis on the sustainability of NPP in the future indicates that the reverse direction feature of NPP change will be slightly stronger than the co-directional feature, meaning that about 30.68% of the study area will switch from improvement to degradation. To conclude, these above studies could provide an important reference for the sustainable development of forests in Northeast China.

Effects of Climate and Land Use changes on Vegetation Dynamics in the Yangtze River Delta, China Based on Abrupt Change Analysis

Vegetation dynamics is thought to be affected by climate and land use changes. However, how the effects vary after abrupt vegetation changes remains unclear. Based on the Mann-Kendall trend and abrupt change analysis, we monitored vegetation dynamics and its abrupt change in the Yangtze River delta during 1982–2016. With the correlation analysis, we revealed the relationship of vegetation dynamics with climate changes (temperature and precipitation) pixel-by-pixel and then with land use changes analysis we studied the effects of land use changes (unchanged or changed land use) on their relationship. Results showed that: (1) the Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI) during growing season that is represented as GSN (growing season NDVI) showed an overall increasing trend and had an abrupt change in 2000. After then, the area percentages with decreasing GSN trend increased in cropland and built-up land, mainly located in the eastern, while those with increasing GSN trend increased in woodland and grassland, mainly located in the southern. Changed land use, except the land conversions from/to built-up land, is more favor for vegetation greening than unchanged land use (2) after abrupt change, the significant positive correlation between precipitation and GSN increased in all unchanged land use types, especially for woodland and grassland (natural land use) and changed land use except built-up land conversion. Meanwhile, the insignificant positive correlation between temperature and GSN increased in woodland, while decreased in the cropland and built-up land in the northwest (3) after abrupt change, precipitation became more important and favor, especially for natural land use. However, temperature became less important and favor for all land use types, especially for built-up land. This research indicates that abrupt change analysis will help to effectively monitor vegetation trend and to accurately assess the relationship of vegetation dynamics with climate and land use changes.

Adams M. Empirical and model-based estimates of spatial and temporal variations in net primary productivity in semi-arid grasslands of Northern China

Spatiotemporal variations in net primary productivity (NPP) reflect the dynamics of water and carbon in the biosphere, and are often closely related to temperature and precipitation. We used the ecosystem model known as the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) to estimate NPP of semiarid grassland in northern China counties between 2001 and 2013. Model estimates were strongly linearly correlated with observed values from different counties (slope = 0.76 (p < 0.001), intercept = 34.7 (p < 0.01), R² = 0.67, RMSE = 35 g C·m^-2·year^-1, bias = -0.11 g C·m^-2·year^-1). We also quantified inter-annual changes in NPP over the 13-year study period. NPP varied between 141 and 313 g C·m^-2·year^-1, with a mean of 240 g C·m^-2·year^-1. NPP increased from west to east each year, and mean precipitation in each county was significantly positively correlated with NPP—annually, and in summer and autumn. Mean precipitation was positively related to NPP in spring, but not significantly so. Annual and summer temperatures were mostly negatively correlated with NPP, but temperature was positively correlated with spring and autumn NPP. Spatial correlation and partial correlation analyses at the pixel scale confirmed precipitation is a major driver of NPP. Temperature was negatively correlated with NPP in 99% of the regions at the annual scale, but after removing the effect of precipitation, temperature was positively correlated with the NPP in 77% of the regions. Our data show that temperature effects on production depend heavily on recent precipitation. Results reported here have significant and far-reaching implications for natural resource management, given the enormous size of these grasslands and the numbers of people dependent on them.
