Potential of Purple Cabbage, Coffee, Blueberry and Turmeric as Nature Based Dyes for Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC)

Potential investigation of combined natural dye pigments extracted from ivy gourd leaves, black glutinous rice and turmeric for dye-sensitised solar cell

Environmental sustainability, resource availability, and cost-effectiveness are the driving forces behind the search for natural sensitised dyes to replace synthetic ones. Using a combination of pigments as the sensitised dye in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs) offers several advantages over using a single pigment. In this present study, natural dyes with different pigments were extracted from three local plants: Coccinia grandis (Ivy gourd leaves, IGL), Oryza sativa Linn (Black glutinous rice, BGR), and Curcuma longa L. (Turmeric, TM). Each colour extract absorbed various wavelengths of light. It was found that the single IGL-dye (green) had a greater light absorption and energy band gap over visible light than other extracts (dyes). Then combinations of these dyes were examined. A sensitised dye combination with a primary to secondary dye in a volumetric ratio of 80/20 exhibited multiple energy band gaps, implying multiple electron excitations at different photon energy levels. Compared to other mixed dyes, IGL/TM-dye had the highest absorbance and electron excitation at three wavelengths with the smallest energy band gap values of 1.74, 2.51, and 2.59 eV. The IGL-dye had the highest DSSC efficiency of 0.15 % for single dyes, followed by the TM-dye and BGR-dye, which had 0.12 % and 0.04 %, respectively. Interestingly, for combined dyes, the IGL/TM dye increased DSSC efficiency to 0.3 %. Since natural dyes tend to be less effective in DSSCs than synthetic dyes because they have a narrower absorption range, higher redox potentials, shorter operational lifetimes, higher rates of electron recombination, and different molecular structures, the dye co-sensitization strategy is one of the best ways to make more effective cells in the future.

Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) Fabrication Using Methanol Extract of Onion Peel as a Natural Sensitizer

Methanol extracts of onion peel waste (Allium cepa) were applied as natural sensitizer in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) fabrication. This research investigated the dye characteristics of onion peel extract and its power conversion efficiency. Onion peel extraction was carried out using unacidified methanol extract (UME) and acidified methanol extract (AME). Dye absorption was characterized by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 200-800 nm and FT-IR at a wave number of 4000-500 cm-1. The power conversion efficiency of the fabricated DSSC was determined by calculating the voltage and current generated by the multimeter. The red onion peel extracts, both acidified and unacidified methanol, had maximum absorption at UV-Visible range (457, 659 and 662 nm). Onion peel extract has several functional groups such as –OH, C=O, C-O-C, C=C, and C-H aromatics- showing specific absorption corresponding to the anthocyanin structure. A solar energy conversion efficiency of η= 0.0413% was obtained from UME extract with a short circuit current of up to Jsc=0.6031 mAcm-2 and a fill factor of 0.2764.

Efficient dye-sensitized solar cell fabricated using a less toxic alternative to electrolyte and charge collector

The photovoltaic investigation of novel and efficient dye-sensitized solar cells is discussed in this paper. Ruthenium-based synthetic dye (N3) is used as a sensitizer. A less toxic alternative is suggested for toxic indium-based glass substrates by using aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) as charge collectors. Moreover, the electrolyte used is a mixture of polymer (polyaniline) and an iodide-triiodide couple to go for the approach involving a lower amount of iodine. In the paper study, on the extent of light, absorption of dye is done by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The morphological study of sheets is done using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images to understand the binding of titania on photoanode. Photovoltaic characteristics (I-V) and induced photon to current efficiency (IPCE) measurements, and light harvesting efficiency (LHE) are also investigated. The highest power conversion efficiency of 6.18% is observed in the suggested fabricated green solar cell. Hence, more efficient, indium-free, and novel cell is fabricated by the usage of different charge collector substrates and quasi solid-state electrolytes.

Optimizing a Simple Natural Dye Production Method for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Examples for Betalain (Bougainvillea and Beetroot Extracts) and Anthocyanin Dyes

We present a study about the sensitizers extracted from natural resources. This paper focuses on how to select, extract and characterize natural dyes, giving some guides to establish a protocol for the whole process of fabricating and using these dyes. The influence of the extraction solvent and method, and of parameters such as pH are analyzed. Also, dye precursor and dye extract stability have been studied, as well as how the dye adsorbs onto substrates and the effect of mixing or concentrating the extracts. Results concerning betalain pigments present in bougainvillea and beetroot extracts, and anthocyanins in eggplant extracts, analyzed by using UV-Vis spectrometry, are included. As an example of application, we report procedures intended to test and enhance the dye potential as a main component of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). DSSCs mimic nature’s photosynthesis and have some advantages like an easy and low-cost fabrication procedure. Their efficiency depends on its design and fabrication process and also on the different components involved. Hence, optimizing each component is essential to achieve the best performance, and thus the dye used as a sensitizer is crucial. We fabricate cells by using a simple procedure: As the interest is focused on the sensitizer, the same consecutive steps are followed, varying only the dye extract. Among all the natural-dyes tested, beetroot extract reaches up to 0.47% cell efficiency, which is near the highest values found in literature for this pigment.

Performance and stability analysis of curcumin dye as a photo sensitizer used in nanostructured ZnO based DSSC

Environmental friendly natural dye curcumin extracted from low-cost Curcumina longa stem is used as a photo-sensitizer for the fabrication of ZnO-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). Nanostructured ZnO is fabricated on a transparent conducting glass (TCO), using a cost-effective chemical bath deposition technique. Scanning electron microscopic images show hexagonal patterned ZnO nano-towers decorated with several nanosteps. The average length of ZnO nano-tower is 5μm and diameter is 1.2μm. The UV-Vis spectroscopic study of the curcumin dye is used to understand the light absorption behavior as well as band gap energy of the extracted natural dye. The dye shows wider absorption band-groups over 350-470nm and 500-600nm with two peaks positioned at 425nm and 525nm. The optical band gap energy and energy band position of the dye is derived which supports its stability and high electron affinity that makes it suitable for light harvesting and effortless electron transfer from dye to the semiconductor or interface between them. FTIR spectrum of curcumin dye-sensitized ZnO-based DSSC shows the presence of anchoring groups and colouring constitutes. The I-V and P-V curves of the fabricated DSSC are measured under simulated light (100mW/cm²). The highest visible light to electric conversion efficiency of 0.266% (using ITO) and 0.33% (using FTO) is achieved from the curcumin dye-sensitized cell.
