Critical review on emerging health effects associated with the indoor air quality and its sustainable management

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is one of the fundamental elements affecting people's health and well-being. Currently, there is a lack of awareness among people about the quantification, identification, and possible health effects of IAQ. Airborne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (NO), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) microbial spores, pollen, allergens, etc. primarily contribute to IAQ deterioration. This review discusses the sources of major indoor air pollutants, molecular toxicity mechanisms, and their effects on cardiovascular, ocular, neurological, women, and foetal health. Additionally, contemporary strategies and sustainable methods for regulating and reducing pollutant concentrations are emphasized, and current initiatives to address and enhance IAQ are explored, along with their unique advantages and potentials. Due to their longer exposure times and particular physical characteristics, women and children are more at risk for poor indoor air quality. By triggering many toxicity mechanisms, including oxidative stress, DNA methylation, epigenetic modifications, and gene activation, indoor air pollution can cause a range of health issues. Low birth weight, acute lower respiratory tract infections, Sick building syndromes (SBS), and early death are more prevalent in exposed residents. On the other hand, the main causes of incapacity and early mortality are lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular disorders. It's crucial to acknowledge anticipated research needs and implemented efficient interventions and policies to lower health hazards.

Freshwater Microalgae as Promising Food Sources: Nutritional and Functional Properties

A number of researchers have predicted that the current food crisis is predicted to worsen in 2050. The prediction of this crisis is aligned with climate change causing increases in some basic foodstuff prices. Therefore, everyone should prepare to consume alternative foods at an early stage. Alternative foods have been widely developed, one of which involves microalgae. However, the type of microalgae produced by some countries on a large scale consists of only oceanic/seawater microalgae. This will have an impact on and hinder development in countries that do not have these resources. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the use of microalgae derived from freshwater. Unfortunately, freshwater microalgae are still rarely investigated for use as alternative foods. However, there is considerable potential to utilize freshwater microalgae, and these algae are very abundant and diverse. In terms of nutritional properties, compared to oceanic / seawater microalgae, freshwater microalgae contain nearly the same protein and amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, carbohydrates, and vitamins. There are even more species whose composition is similar to those currently consumed foods, such as beef, chicken, beans, eggs, and corn. In addition to dietary properties, freshwater microalgae also have functional properties, due to the presence of pigments, sterols, fatty acids, and polyphenols. Given the potential of freshwater microalgae, these aquatic resources need to be developed for potential use as future food resources.

Analysis of microalgal growth kinetic model and carbohydrate biosynthesis cultivated using agro-industrial waste residuals as carbon source

Microalgal carbohydrate is considered one of the potential feedstock for biofuel produced via the bioconversion process. However, the current cultivation process using commercial medium exhibited low biomass production and its carbohydrate productivity which become a bottleneck for sustainable microalgal-carbohydrate-based biofuel production. Thus, the objective of this study is to assess the utilization of industrial waste including molasses and glycerol on the Halochlorella rubescens and Tetraselmis suecica growth as well as its carbohydrate content under different cultivation modes such as autotrophic, heterotrophic and photoheterotrophic conditions. From this study, the highest maximum biomass of H. rubenscens and T. suecica of 0.653 ± 0.009 and 0.669 ± 0.01gL^-1 were obtained when the cultivation was performed under photoheterotrophic using molasses. High carbohydrate content of H. rubescens and T. seucica of 56.81 ± 0.39% and 71.52 ± 0.03% with glucose represent the dominant sugar was observed under this condition. The growth kinetic model of the analysis indicated that Huang and Gompertz Models described well the growth of H. rubescens and T. suecica under photoheteroptroph condition with a high significant R² of 0.99. The information generated could be beneficial for the future development of low-cost microalgal cultivation media formulation for future microalgal carbohydrate-based products such as bioethanol.

Indoor Air Quality Improvement Using Nature-Based Solutions: Design Proposals to Greener Cities

Low indoor air quality is an increasingly important problem due to the spread of urbanization. Because people spend most of their time inside, poor indoor air quality causes serious human health issues, resulting in significant economic losses. In this work, the current state of affairs is presented and analyzed, focusing on the current problems and the available solutions to improve the quality of indoor air, and the use of nature-based solutions. These involve the cultivation of microalgae in closed photobioreactors. In these systems, photosynthetic organisms can capture CO₂ and other pollutants generated in indoor environments, which they use to grow and develop biomass. Several possible layouts for the implementation of microalgae-based indoor air cleaning systems are presented, taking into account the systems that are currently available at a commercial scale. A critical analysis of the microalgae indoor purification systems is presented, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages, and suggesting potential improvements and future lines of research and development in the area.

Optimization of microwave-assisted carbohydrate extraction from indigenous Scenedesmus sp. grown in brewery effluent using response surface methodology

The use of wastewater as a nutrient source for microalgae cultivation is considered as a cost-effective approach for algal biomass and biofuel production. The microalgal biomass contains carbohydrates that can be processed into bioethanol through different extraction methods. The objective of this study is to optimize the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of carbohydrates from the indigenous Scenedesmus sp. grown on brewery effluent. Optimization of independent variables, such as acid concentration (0.1–5 N), microwave power (800–1200 W), temperature (80–180 °C) and extraction time (5–30 min) performed by response surface methodology. It was found that all independent variables had a significant and positive effect on microwave-assisted carbohydrate extraction. The quadratic model developed on the basis of carbohydrate yield had F value of 112.05 with P < 0.05, indicating that the model was significant to predict the carbohydrate yield. The model had a high value of R² (0.9899) and adjusted R² (0.9811), indicating that the fitted model displayed a good agreement between the predicted and actual carbohydrate yield. An optimum carbohydrate yield obtained was 260.54 mg g⁻¹ under the optimum conditions of acid concentration (2.8 N), microwave power (1075 W), temperature (151 °C) and extraction time (22 min). The validation test showed that the model has adequately described the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of carbohydrates from microalgal biomass. This study demonstrated that the indigenous Scenedesmus sp. grown on brewery effluent provides a promising result in carbohydrate production for bioethanol feedstock.

Isolation and selection of growth medium for freshwater microalgae Asterarcys quadricellulare for maximum biomass production

The use of microalgae biomass as a suitable alternative feedstock for biofuel production has been promoted in the field of green biotechnology. In this present study, the microalgae were isolated from freshwater samples. The predominant strain was screened from the samples and grown in four different growth media, including modified Bold's Basal Medium (BBM), modified CFTRI medium, BG11 medium and CHU medium, to find the suitable growth medium to enrich biomass production. In total three microalgae colonies were identified based on their colony morphology microscopically by using a light microscope. The predominant strain was confirmed as Asterarcys quadricellulare using 18S rRNA sequencing. The growth of microalgae was investigated based on parameters like dry weight, pigment composition such as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoid and lipid content in the microalgae. Among the four different media, modified BBM medium showed maximum dry weight (1.44 ± 0.015 g/L), chlorophyll a (23.07 ± 0.049 mg/L), chlorophyll b (16.76 ± 0.010 mg/L), carotenoid (8.92 ± 0.031 mg/L) and lipid content (375 ± 0.020 mg/L) on the 25th day of culture. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis showed the presence of major fatty acids stearic acid, palmitic acid and oleyl alcohol in the microalgae. Therefore the high lipid content and fatty acid profiles of Asterarcys quadricellulare are becoming a promising suitable strain for biofuel production with modified BBM medium.
