Joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on the intensive margin of labour supply: evidence from Malawi

BACKGROUND

There is sparse evidence on the joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on the intensive margin of labour supply, particularly in developing countries. We interact ill-health and health shocks with access to social protection and estimate their joint effects on weekly hours of work.

METHODS

We employ a zero-inflated Poisson model to assess joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on weekly hours of work exploiting pooled repeated cross-sectional data from Malawi.

RESULTS

We find that overall, individuals who suffered from ill-health or a health shock, including an illness/injury, a hospital admission or a chronic illness and benefited from social protection, reduced their weekly hours of work.

CONCLUSIONS

The study provides novel empirical evidence on the potential joint effects of ill-health, health shocks and social protection on the intensive margin of labour supply, shedding light on the role social protection can play in developing countries.

The impact of health on labour outcomes among middle-aged and elderly: Insights from India

The impact of ill-health on labour force participation is a well-recognized concern in both developed and developing countries. However, previous studies have often overlooked age differentials in this relationship, assuming uniform effects across age groups. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how ill-health affects labour outcomes among different age segments in India. Utilizing data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) Wave 1, which covers over 72,000 individuals aged 45 and above, this research investigates the linkage between health and labour force outcomes. The labour outcomes in this study includes labour force participation, labour earnings and hours worked. Present study used instrumental variable approach to mitigate endogeneity issues and establish causal relationships between health and labour outcomes. The Heckman selection model is utilized to address selection bias in analysing wage and hours worked. The study reveals several key findings. Firstly, ill-health consistently leads to a decline in labour force participation among both middle-aged (28 percent) and elderly (36 percent) individuals in India. This underscores the pervasive impact of health on workforce engagement, particularly in a context with limited social security measures. Secondly, the research identifies significant variations in the effects of ill-health on wages and hours worked based on age. Among elderly individuals, there is a pronounced reduction in both wages and hours worked due to ill-health. However, this effect is less pronounced among middle-aged adults. Furthermore, socioeconomic factors play a pivotal role in shaping how ill-health influences labour outcomes among different age groups. This study underscores the importance of considering age differentials in the impact of ill-health on labour outcomes, offering valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers seeking to address this critical issue in India's dynamic socio-economic landscape.

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of ill health and health shocks on labour supply

BACKGROUND

Several studies have explored the effects of ill health and health shocks on labour supply. However, there are very few systematic reviews and meta-analyses in this area. The current work aims to fill this gap by undertaking a systematic review and meta-analysis on the effects of ill health and health shocks on labour supply.

METHODS

We searched using EconLit and MEDLINE databases along with grey literature to identify relevant papers for the analysis. Necessary information was extracted from the papers using an extraction tool. We calculated partial correlations to determine effect sizes and estimated the overall effect sizes by using the random effects model. Sub-group analyses were conducted based on geography, publication year and model type to assess the sources of heterogeneity. Model type entailed distinguishing articles that used the standard ordinary least squares (OLS) technique from those that used other estimation techniques such as quasi-experimental methods, including propensity score matching and difference-in-differences methodologies. Multivariate and univariate meta-regressions were employed to further examine the sources of heterogeneity. Moreover, we tested for publication bias by using a funnel plot, Begg's test and the trim and fill methodology.

RESULTS

We found a negative and statistically significant pooled estimate of the effect of ill health and health shocks on labour supply (partial r = -0.05, p < .001). The studies exhibited substantial heterogeneity. Sample size, geography, model type and publication year were found to be significant sources of heterogeneity. The funnel plot, and the trim and fill methodology, when imputed on the left showed some level of publication bias, but this was contrasted by both the Begg's test, and the trim and fill methodology when imputed on the right.

CONCLUSION

The study examined the effects of ill health and health shocks on labour supply. We found negative statistically significant pooled estimates pertaining to the overall effect of ill health and health shocks on labour supply including in sub-groups. Empirical studies on the effects of ill- health and health shocks on labour supply have oftentimes found a negative relationship. Our meta-analysis results, which used a large, combined sample size, seem to reliably confirm the finding.

Impacts of firewood burning for cooking on respiratory health and healthcare utilisation: Empirical evidence from Sri Lankan micro-data

Despite escalating income levels of Sri Lankan households, 70.3% of them still depend on firewood for cooking. This might lead to bad respiratory health and thereby, increased healthcare utilisation. With this backdrop, this paper examines how firewood burning for cooking influences respiratory health and healthcare utilisation of Sri Lankans. The study proposes a theoretical model to explain effects of firewood burning on respiratory health and healthcare utilisation and empirically tests it using nation-wide micro-data of 79,170 individuals belonging to 21,748 households. The data are drawn from the most recent wave of Sri Lankan household income and expenditure survey. After addressing potential endogeneity by applying instrumental variable regression models, the study finds that firewood burning increases households' probability of asthma prevalence by 10.9 percentage points (P < 0.001), out-patient care utilisation by 33.1 percentage points (P < 0.001), and in-patient care utilisation by 17.5 percentage points (P < 0.001), on average. Our individual level analysis demonstrates that females are more vulnerable to bad respiratory health induced by firewood burning (β = 0.055, P < 0.001) compared to males (β = 0.008, P > 0.1). The results imply policies on promoting improved-cooking stoves, separated-kitchen designs, and switching more towards cleaner energy sources, including LP gas and solar power.

Does Economic Support Have an Impact on the Health Status of Elderly Patients With Chronic Diseases in China? - Based on CHARLS (2018) Data Research

Objective: The economic support of elderly patients with chronic diseases may affect their health status. This study assessed the impact of economic support on the health status of elderly patients with chronic diseases in China and explored the relationship between regional economic differences and the impact of economic support on health status. Methods: This study used the data of 3,416 elderly patients with chronic diseases from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2018. Logit model and stepwise regression method were used to analyze and compare the influence of economic support on self-rated health, mental health, and activities of daily living (ADL) of elderly patients with chronic diseases. Sub-regional comparison was used for the research of regional differences in the impact of economic support on health. Results: we find that economic support has a positive effect on the health status of elderly patients with chronic diseases in China. Socioeconomic support has a positive effect on self-rated health and mental health of elderly patients with chronic diseases, and the effect on activities of daily living (ADL) is no longer significant after the gradual inclusion of control variables. Family economic support has no significant impact on the health dimensions of elderly patients with chronic diseases. With respect to regional differences, socioeconomic support can improve mental health in central China and improve self-rated health in western China, while it can improve overall health status in eastern China. The influence of family economic support on different health dimensions in different regions is still insignificant. Conclusions: The health status of elderly patients with chronic diseases is affected by socioeconomic support in China. In order to improve the health of elderly patients with chronic diseases, it is necessary to increase socioeconomic support. Meanwhile, it is also essential to pay attention to the differences in economic support between different regions and increase the socioeconomic support for elderly patients with chronic diseases in undeveloped regions so as to improve their health status.
