Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE Bawei Guben Huashi Jiangzhi Decoction (BGHJ), a traditional Chinese compound formula, comprises eight Chinese medicinal herbs: Codonopsis Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Cassiae Semen, Lysimachiae Herba, Edgeworthiae Gardner Flos, Oryzae Semen cum Monasco, Nelumbinis Folium, and Alismatis Rhizoma. It has the therapeutic effects of improving digestive and absorptive functions of the gastrointestinal tract, reducing cholesterol levels, and helping to lose weight. Therefore, BGHJ is mainly used to treat spleen-deficient obesity (SDO) clinically. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aims to examine the efficacy and mechanism of BGHJ in a model of SDO in rats, as well as the potentially involved constituents entering the blood and differential metabolites. METHODS The SDO rat model was replicated utilizing a high-fat and high-sugar diet in conjunction with exhaustive swimming. Subsequently, the rats were subjected to a six-week intervention comprising varying dosages of BGHJ and a positive control, orlistat. To evaluate the efficacy of BGHJ on SDO model rats, we first measured the rats' body weight, body surface temperature, spleen index, as well as biochemical indicators in the serum and colon, and then assessed the pathological state of the colon and liver. Afterward, we analyzed the 16S rDNA gut microbiota, non-targeted serum metabolomics, and serum pharmacology to study the main active components of BGHJ and its action mechanism against SDO model rats. In addition, we constructed a network diagram for overall visualization and analysis, and experimentally verified the predicted results. Finally, we used quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect the gene expression of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) indicators in rat hypothalamic neurons. We quantitatively targeted the detection of neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), acetylcholine (Ach), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), and noradrenaline (NA) in rat hypothalamus. RESULTS The results demonstrated that all dosage regimens of BGHJ exhibited the capacity to moderately modulate parameters including body weight, surface temperature, spleen index, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), cholecystokinin (CCK), 5-HT, interleukin 6 (IL-6) and interleukin 17 (IL-17), while concurrently reducing hepatic lipid droplet deposition and restoring intestinal integrity. Subsequent experimental results showed that we successfully identified 27 blood components of BGHJ and identified 52 differential metabolites in SDO model rats. At the same time, the experiment proved that BGHJ could effectively inhibit the metabolic pathway of arachidonic acid. In addition, BGHJ can also restore the intestinal microbiota composition of SDO model rats. Finally, we also found that BGHJ could regulate the expression of hypothalamic neurons and neurotransmitters. CONCLUSIONS The research revealed the main active ingredients of BGHJ and its mechanism against SDO model rats through gut microbiota, non-target serum metabolomics, and serum drug chemistry.

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia accounts for about 17 million deaths worldwide each year. High cost and side effects have limited the use of conventional anti-lipidaemic agents in some cases, majority of whom resort to traditional medicine. The current research focused on validating the safety and efficacy of a herbal product, 'LIPO A' used in the management of hyperlipidaemia. Induction of hyperlipidaemia was achieved by oral administration of 3 mL of cholesterol in coconut oil for 4 weeks in male Sprague Dawley rats with water available as 40 % sucrose. Subsequently, the animals were treated with 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg of the product 'LIPO A' for 4 additional weeks with atorvastatin as reference drug (at 2 mg/kg body weight). Blood samples were taken for serum biochemistry and atherogenic ratios were then calculated. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, total antioxidant capacity, physicochemical and phytochemical analysis were also carried out using standard methods. Treatment resulted in a dose-dependent reduction in total cholesterol with maximum reduction of 46.01 % at 400 mg/kg compared to atorvastatin with 49.30 %. There were significant changes in the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c/HDL-c) and Total Cholesterol (TC/HDL-c) ratios which measures the atherogenic and coronary risk indices respectively. Acute and subacute toxicity studies did not reveal any signs of toxicity. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint revealed six well resolved peaks with two prominent compounds with retention times 24.88 and 23.95 min, which could serve as quality control markers for the product. The herbal product showed considerable antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant actions in rodent models and lend credence to its use in traditional medicine for hyperlipidaemia.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases worldwide. The etiology of NAFLD is highly heterogeneous, which occurs and develops under the joint action of metabolism, inflammation, genetics, environment, and gut microbiota. At present, the principal therapeutic modalities targeting NAFLD are lifestyle interventions such as weight loss through diet and exercise. At present, there is no established therapy for the treatment of NAFLD, and many therapies are associated with a variety of side effects. A great number of in vitro and in vivo experiments have indicated that there are many natural foods that have therapeutic potential for NAFLD. This review summarizes the natural foods and their mechanisms that were found in recent years, furthermore, provides further information relevant to the treatment of NAFLD.

Abstract
Doctor, Do You Know Red Yeast Rice? Abstract. We present cases of patients with high total cholesterol who wanted to use an alternative therapy for lowering cholesterol. An improvement in the lipid profile was found in all patients, and all tolerated the product made from red rice yeast very well. No side effects were observed. The patients who take red fermented rice consciously choose an alternative agent in the field of phytotherapy because they already have to take several conventional medicines and are no longer willing to use an additional drug of this kind. Another reason is that they no longer want to put up with the side effects they suffered from when using a common lipid-lowering drug.

Abstract
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels almost constantly increased in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS). Protein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) [accelerates LDL-receptor (LDL-R) degradation] is overexpressed by liver cells in NS. Their levels, correlated inversely to LDL-R expression and directly to LDL-C, seem to play a central role in hypercholesterolaemia in NS. Hypersynthesis resulting from sterol regulatory element-binding protein dysfunction, hyperactivity induced by c-inhibitor of apoptosis protein expressed in response to stimulation by tumour necrosis factor-α produced by damaged podocytes and hypo-clearance are the main possible mechanisms. Increased LDL-C may damage all kidney cell populations (podocytes, mesangial and tubular cells) in a similar manner. Intracellular cholesterol accumulation produces oxidative stress, foam cell formation and apoptosis, all favoured by local inflammation. The cumulative effect of cellular lesions is worsened proteinuria and kidney function loss. Accordingly, NS patients should be considered high risk and treated by lowering LDL-C. However, there is still not enough evidence determining whether lipid-lowering agents are helpful in managing dyslipidaemia in NS. Based on good efficacy and safety proved in the general population, therapeutic modulation of PCSK9 via antibody therapy might be a reasonable solution. This article explores the established and forthcoming evidence implicating PCSK9 in LDL-C dysregulation in NS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays a central role in the metabolism and homeostasis of lipids. ApoE gene encodes three major isoforms: ε2, ε3 a nd ε4 forming six phenotypes: E2E2, E2E3, E2E4, E3E3, E3E3 and E4E4. Disorders of the lipid metabolism and the homeostasis are frequently coexist in renal diseases. The association between gene polymorphisms of apoE and lipid metabolism were not consistent. This meta-analysis was performed to assess the association between gene polymorphisms of apoE and lipid metabolism in renal diseases. METHODS A pre-defined literatures search and selection of eligible relevant investigations were performed to extract and collect data from electronic databases. RESULTS Sixteen articles were enrolled for the analysis of association between apoE gene polymorphisms and lipid metabolism. Subjects with E3E4 had a higher total cholesterol (TC) than those with E3E3, and subjects with E2E3 had a lower TC than those with E3E3. Subjects with ε2, had a lower TC than those with ε3 or ε4, and subjects with ε4 had a higher TC than those with, ε3. Subjects with E2E2, E2E3 or E4E4 had a higher triglyceride (TG) than those with E3E3. Subjects with ε4 had a higher TG than those with ε3. Subjects with ε2, had a higher level of TG than those with non-ε2. Subjects with E3E4 had a slightly lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) than those with E3E3. E3E4 appeared to be associated with lower levels of HDL. Subjects with E2E2, E2E3 had a notably lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) than those with E3E3. Subjects with ε2, had a lower LDL than those with ε3 or ε4 ApoE gene polymorphisms were not associated with very low-density lipoprotein, and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)]. Subjects with E2E3 or E2E4 had higher apoE levels than those with E3E3, and subjects with E4E4 had lower apoE levels than those with E3E3. CONCLUSION ApoE gene polymorphisms are associated with the expression of TC, TG HDL, LDL, Lp(a) or apoE.

Abstract
Children with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) are exposed to multiple cardiovascular risk factors predisposing them to accelerated atherosclerosis. This risk is negligible in steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome, but a substantial proportion of children with SRNS progress to chronic kidney disease, exacerbating the already existing cardiovascular risk. While dyslipidemia is an established modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease in adults with NS, it is uncertain to what extent analogous risks exist for children. There is increasing evidence of accelerated atherosclerosis in children with persistently high lipid levels, especially in refractory NS. Abnormalities of lipid metabolism in NS include hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia due to elevated apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins, decreased lipoprotein lipase and hepatic lipase activity, increased hepatic PCSK9 levels, and reduced hepatic uptake of high-density lipoprotein. Existing guidelines for the management of dyslipidemia in children may be adapted to target lower lipid levels in children with NS, but they will most likely require both lifestyle modifications and pharmacological therapy. While there is a lack of data from randomized controlled trials in children with NS demonstrating the benefit of lipid-lowering drugs, therapies including statins, bile acid sequestrants, fibrates, ezetimibe, and LDL apheresis have all been suggested and/or utilized. However, concerns with the use of lipid-lowering drugs in children include unclear side effect profiles and unknown long-term impacts on neurological development and puberty. The recent introduction of anti-PCSK9 monoclonal antibodies and other therapies targeted to the molecular mechanisms of lipid transport disrupted in NS holds promise for the future treatment of dyslipidemia in NS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The influence of red yeast rice (RYR) on perioperative outcome remains unknown. AIM We aimed to compare the complications and mortality after surgery between patients treated with and without RYR prescription. DESIGN In this surgical cohort study of 3.6 million surgical patients who underwent major inpatient surgeries, 2581 patients who used RYR prescription pre-operatively were compared with 25 810 non-RYR patients selected by matching for age and sex. METHODS Patients' demographics and medical conditions were collected from the claims data of the National Health Insurance in Taiwan. Complications and mortality after major surgeries in association with RYR prescription were investigated by calculating adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) by multiple logistic regression. RESULTS Compared with patients without RYR prescription, patients prescribed RYR had lower risks of post-operative bleeding (OR 0.36, 95% CI 0.15-0.89), pneumonia (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.36-0.83), stroke (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.47-0.92) and 30-day in-hospital mortality (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.15-0.92). Decreased risk of intensive care (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.54-0.77), shorter length of hospital stay (P < 0.001) and lower medical expenditures (P = 0.0008) during the index surgical admission were also noted for patients with RYR prescription compared to those for patients without RYR prescription. CONCLUSIONS This study showed a potentially positive effect of RYR on outcomes after major surgeries. However, patient non-compliance for taking medication should be noted. Our findings require future prospective studies to validate RYR prescription for improving perioperative outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is an important cardiovascular risk factor in steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). Efficacy of statins for treatment of hyperlipidemia in children with SRNS is unclear. METHODS This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial enrolled 30 patients with SRNS, aged 5-18 years, with serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels between 130 and 300 mg/dl, to receive a fixed dose of atorvastatin (n = 15, 10 mg/d) or placebo (n = 15) by block randomization in a 1:1 ratio. Primary outcome was change in serum LDL-C at 12 months. Change in levels of other lipid fractions, carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery, and adverse events were also evaluated. RESULTS At the end of 12 months, atorvastatin was not superior to placebo in reducing plasma LDL-C levels, median percentage reduction 15.8% and 9.5% respectively, in atorvastatin and placebo arms (n = 14 in each; P = 0.40). Apolipoprotein B levels significantly declined with atorvastatin in modified intention-to-treat analysis (P = 0.01) but not in the per-protocol analysis. There was no significant effect on other lipid fractions, cIMT and FMD. Adverse events were similar between groups. Change in serum albumin was negatively associated with change in serum LDL-C, very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and apolipoprotein B (P < 0.001), irrespective of receiving atorvastatin, age, gender, body mass index, and serum creatinine. CONCLUSIONS Atorvastatin, administered at a fixed daily dose of 10 mg, was not beneficial in lowering lipid levels in children with SRNS; rise in serum albumin was associated with improvement in dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are the principal cause of death worldwide. The potentially serious adverse effects of therapeutic drugs lead to growing awareness of the role of Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Chinese herbal medicine has been widely used in many countries especially in China from antiquity; however, the mechanisms by which herbal medicine acts in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases are far from clear. In this review, we briefly describe the characteristics of Chinese herbal medicine by comparing with western medicine. Then we summarize the formulae and herbs/natural products applied in the clinic and animal studies being sorted according to the specific cardiovascular diseases. Most importantly, we elaborate the existing investigations into mechanisms by which herbal compounds act at the cellular levels, including vascular smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, cardiomyocytes and immune cells. Future research should focus on well-designed clinic trial, in-depth mechanic study, investigations on side effects of herbs and drug interactions. Studies on developing new agents with effectiveness and safety from traditional Chinese medicine is a promising way for prevention and treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Hyperlipidemia, characterized by the abnormal blood lipid profiles, is one of the dominant factors of many chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). For the low cost, effectiveness, and fewer side effects, the popularity of using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to handle hyperlipidemia is increasing and its role in health care has been recognized by the public at large. Despite the importance of TCM herbs and formulations, there is no comprehensive review summarizing their scientific findings on handling hyperlipidemia. This review summarizes the recent experimental and clinical results of nine representative single Chinese herbs and seven classic TCM formulae that could improve lipid profiles so as to help understand and compare their underlying mechanisms. Most of single herbs and formulae demonstrated the improvement of hyperlipidemic conditions with multiple and diverse mechanisms of actions similar to conventional Western drugs in spite of their mild side effects. Due to increasing popularity of TCM, more extensive, well-designed preclinical and clinical trials on the potential synergistic and adverse side effects of herb-drug interactions as well as their mechanisms are warranted. Hyperlipidemic patients should be warned about the potential risks of herb-drug interactions, particularly those taking anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs.

Abstract
Hypercholesterolemia is one of the most common chronic diseases in human. Along with chemical therapy traditional medication is used as hypocholesterolemic remedy, however, with unfavorable side effects. Recently, Monascus fermented product (MFP) has become a popular hypocholesterolemic natural supplement. In the present study, the hypocholesterolemic activity of Monascus purpureus FTC5391 fermented product ethanolic extract (MFPe) was investigated in hypercholesterolemic rats. Results showed that MFPe not only reduced the serum total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, TG concentration, and TC/HDL-C ratio but also increased the HDL-C. Further, solid phase extraction (SPE) was carried out to obtain the hypocholesterolemic bioactive fraction. The high polar fraction of SPE increased the HDL-C (42%) and decreased the TC (53.3%), LDL-C (47%), and TG (50.7%) levels as well as TC/HDL-C ratio (69.1%) in serum. The GC-MS results of the active fraction revealed two main compounds, isosorbide and erythritol, which act as coronary vasodilator compounds.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. The statins are a milestone in the primary and second prevention of cardiovascular diseases and significantly improved its prognosis. Along with the long-term treatment with statins in combination with other hypolipidemic drugs or alone, its safety has attracted a particular attention in clinic, such as the elevation of transaminase and rhabdomyolysis, which have raised an idea of developing the other types of lipid-lowering agents from botanic materials. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in clinical practice for more than 2000 years in China and showed some beneficial effects for human health and many diseases. Recently, many studies demonstrated a favorable effect of TCM for treating dyslipidemia; however, its mechanism remains unclear or totally unknown. The progress and perspective of studies on dyslipidemia with single Chinese herb and its monomers or effective extracts during the past 10 years are discussed in the present review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nephrotic syndrome is the collective name given to a group of symptoms that include proteinuria, lipiduria, hypoalbuminaemia, oedema, hypercholesterolaemia, elevated triglycerides, and hyperlipidaemia. Hyperlipidaemia is thought to aggravate glomerulosclerosis (hardening of blood vessels in the kidneys) and enhance progression of glomerular disease. Studies have established that reduction in total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is associated with reduction in risk of cardiovascular diseases. In 2011, the European Society of Cardiology and European Atherosclerosis Society guidelines for the management of dyslipidaemia recommended use of statins as first-line agents in the management of nephrotic dyslipidaemia. However, the effectiveness and safety of statins for people with nephrotic syndrome remains uncertain. Furthermore, the efficacy of second-line lipid-lowering drugs, such as ezetimibe and nicotinic acid, has not been proven in patients with nephrotic syndrome who are unable to tolerate statin therapy. OBJECTIVES This review aimed to evaluate the benefits and harms of lipid-lowering agents in adults and children with nephrotic syndrome. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Renal Group's Specialised Register (to 18 March 2013) through contact with the Trials Search Co-ordinator using search terms relevant to this review. SELECTION CRITERIA All randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs (RCTs in which allocation to treatment was obtained by alternation, use of alternate medical records, date of birth or other predictable methods) looking at participants with nephrotic syndrome that compared any lipid-lowering agent to placebo, no treatment or other lipid-lowering agents, given for not less than four weeks, were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently assessed study eligibility and risk of bias, and extracted data. Statistical analyses were performed using a random effects model. Dichotomous results were expressed as risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). For continuous measures mean difference (MD) was used, or the standardised mean difference (SMD) where different scales had been used. MAIN RESULTS We included five RCTs enrolling a total of 203 participants. Of these, four studies compared statins with no treatment or placebo, and one compared fibrates with placebo. We found no published studies comparing second-line agents such as ezetimibe, bile acid sequestrants, and nicotinic acid with placebo or no treatment. Our assessment of the risk of bias found that one study was judged overall to be at low risk of bias and the remaining four were judged to be at high risk of bias.Most outcomes were supported by single study data. One study reported significantly increased high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol among participants in the statin arm compared with the no treatment group (MD 5.40 mg/dL, 95% CI 2.31 to 8.49). Another study reported higher serum albumin in the statin group compared to those who received no treatment (MD 0.60 g/dL, 95% CI 0.14 to 1.06). No serious adverse events, such as rhabdomyolysis, were reported, however some minor events occurred. One study reported no significant difference in the number of participants with elevated liver enzymes (RR 3.00, 95% CI 0.13 to 69.52); three studies reported liver enzymes remained within the normal range (no data provided). Four studies reported creatinine phosphokinase (CPK). One study indicated that CPK values fluctuated in both the simvastatin and placebo groups (no data provided); the remaining three studies reported CPK either stayed within the normal range (one study) or there was no significant difference between the lipid lowering agents and placebo. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS None of the included studies reported patient-centred outcomes including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, or non-fatal myocardial infarction; only single studies reported cholesterol (HDL, LDL and total cholesterol), triglycerides, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, liver enzymes, and protein (serum, urine). High quality RCTs need to be conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of lipid-lowering drugs for people with nephrotic syndrome.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate the association between apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymorphism and total cholesterol (TC) level in patients with kidney diseases.
METHODS: A predefined literature search was performed to collect data from the electronic databases of PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library and eligible relevant studies reporting the association of apoE gene polymorphism with TC level in patients with kidney diseases were recruited for meta-analysis.
RESULTS: Twenty-one studies were identified for the analysis of association between apoE gene polymorphism and TC level in patients with kidney disease. Subjects with E3E4 had a higher TC than those with E3E3 [weighted mean differences (WMD) = 2.14, P = 0.01] and subjects with E2E3 had a lower TC than those with E3E3 (WMD = -1.93, P = 0.01). Subjects with ε2 had a lower TC than those with ε3 (ε2 vs ε3: WMD = -1.23, P = 0.002; ε2 vs ε4: WMD = -2.77, P ﹤0.0001) and subjects with 3 had a lower TC than those with 4 (WMD = -0.79, P = 0.03).
CONCLUSION: Subjects with apoE E3E4 and ε4 had a higher TC level and subjects with apoE E2E3 and ε2 had a higher TC level in patients with kidney disease. However, more well-designed studies should be performed in the future to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is a major protein in the lipoprotein transport system that plays a well established role in lipids metabolism. apoE gene contains three potential alleles: ε2, ε3 and ε4, forming six genotypes: ε2ε2, ε2ε3, ε2ε4, ε3ε3, ε3ε3 and ε4ε4. The disorder of lipids metabolism is an important feature for nephrotic syndrome (NS). There were some investigations reporting that apoE and its gene polymorphism was associated with NS susceptibility. However, the mechanism was unclear and the association was still controversial. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the association between apoE and NS risk in experimental and human studies. A predefined literature search and selection of eligible relevant studies were performed to collect the data from electronic databases, and eligible investigations were synthesized using meta-analysis method. In experimental models, twelve comparisons were included and a definitely positive association was observed between apoE protein expression and NS susceptibility (WMD = 1.88, P < 0.00001). However, in human, there was only two studies included for meta-analysis and a positive association between apoE protein expression and NS susceptibility wasn't found (OR = 108.10, P = 0.32). Interestingly, ε3ε3, ε3ε4, ε3 and ε4 were associated with NS susceptibility (ε3ε3: OR = 0.56, P = 0.002; ε3ε4: OR = 1.91, P = 0.02; ε3: OR = 0.61, P = 0.001; ε4: OR = 1.85, P = 0.009). In conclusion, the apoE gene expression was associated with the NS susceptibility in experimental studies, and the apoE ε3ε3, ε3ε4, ε3 and ε4 were associated with the onset of NS in human studies. This study supported that the disorder of apoE was one of the possible causes for NS risk. However, more studies should be performed to investigate this relationship in the future.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas have been widely used in China since ancient times to treat certain diseases (e.g., phlegm, dampness and blood stasis). Recently, the effects of these medicines have been increasingly demonstrated to be helpful for hyperlipidemic patients. AIM OF THE STUDY This manuscript aims to describe the scientific evidence for the efficacy of TCM and attempts to identify potential TCM formulas for treating hyperlipidemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS TCM formulas approved by the State Food and Drug Administration of China (SFDA) were sourced from the official SFDA website (http://www.sda.gov.cn/). Human and animal evidence for the hypolipidemic effects of herbs from TCM formulas were reviewed via the Internet (Elsevier, ACS, Wiley Online Library, SpringerLink, PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, Baidu, and Google) and libraries up to October 31, 2011. RESULTS More than 50 TCM formulas have been used to treat hyperlipidemia. These herbs can primarily be grouped into three categories: (1) herbs promoting excretions, generally by reducing food retention, enhancing purgative effects, and promoting diuresis and choleretic effects, e.g., Fructus Crataegi (), Radix Polygoni Multiflori (), Semen Cassiae (), and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (), Rhizoma alismatis (), and Herba Artemisiae Scopariae (); (2) herbs acting on the cardiovascular system, generally by improving blood circulation based on TCM theories, e.g., Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (), Radix Puerariae (), Rhizoma Chuanxiong (), Flos Carthami (), and Folium Nelumbinis (); and (3) herbs that have tonic effects, e.g., Fructus Lycii (), Radix Ginseng (), and Radix Astragali (). CONCLUSIONS Three basic approaches, including excretory function enhancement, cardiovascular system improvement, and tonic effect reinforcement, are emerging among TCM formulas for the treatment of hyperlipidemia. These approaches may be useful in controlling blood lipid levels, preventing cardiovascular complications, and adjusting bodily functions in hyperlipidemic patients. However, solid evidence of the efficacy of these treatments is required.
