Abstract
AIMS Ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a phenomenon that necessitates urgent intervention, which occurs as a result of ovarian torsion, and it is frequently seen in young women. A large amount of free radical and oxidative damage as a result of I/R plays a role in the cause of the incident. Antioxidant agents are thought to be beneficial in preventing this damage, and the potential protective effects of esculetin, which had not been tested previously, were investigated in this study. STUDY DESIGN The rats in the study were divided into five groups at random: control, sham, esculetin, I/R, and treatment. Oxidative stress parameters, proinflammatory cytokines, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2)/nuclear factor-kβ (NF-κβ) pathway, and histopathological analyses were evaluated at the end of the study. KEY FINDINGS After I/R, malondialdehyde levels, proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels and NF-κβ expressions were increased, Nrf-2 expression and glutathione level decreased and the histopathologic picture deteriorated. However, as a result of the esculetin treatment, ameliorative effects in the aforementioned parameters were determined, and it was ensured that they returned to normal levels. CONCLUSION According to these findings, esculetin has protective effects on I/R damage by lowering lipid peroxidation and having antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. SIGNIFICANCE Our results proved the protective effect of esculetin against ovarian IR injury in rats and this may be attributed to Nrf-2/NF-κβ axis which showed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, esculetin can be used in the future for preventive effects to ovarian IR injury.

Abstract
We investigated the efficacy of activated cannabinoid 2 receptors for alleviating ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. Female Wistar albino rats were divided randomly into six groups: ischemia-reperfusion (IRG); ischemia-reperfusion + 0.2 mg/kg JWH-133 (JIRG1), ischemia-reperfusion + 1 mg/kg JWH-133 (JIRG2); ischemia-reperfusion + 5 mg/kg JWH-133 (JIRG3); solvent control, and sham control. Ovarian ischemia was established for 3 h followed by reperfusion for 3 h. Ovarian tissue was investigated using histology, immunohistochemistry and biochemistry. Administration of JWH-133 synthetic cannabinoid reduced nuclear factor kappa-B immunoreactivity as well as TUNEL positivity scores and malondialdehyde levels. These reductions were significant in all cases except for the malondialdehyde levels in the 1 mg/kg JWH-133 group. Activation of cannabinoid 2 receptors by JWH-133 reduced ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ovarian ischemia-reperfusion (IR) damage continues to be a serious infertility problem. The oxidative stress plays central role in the development of IR injuries. Activation of antioxidants decreases IR injuries; however, the efficacy of antioxidant agents remains controversial. Unfortunately, there has been no evidence for medicinal use of boric acid (BA) and propolis (Prop) on ovarian IR injury on rats so far. This study will provide to reveal the potential applications of the Prop and BA in ovarian IR therapy. METHODS The Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into five groups: I-control, II-IR, 3 h of ischemia and 3 h of reperfusion, III and IV-a signal dose of oral BA (7 mg/kg) and Prop (100 mg/kg) alone 1 h before induction of IR, V-Prop and BA together 1 h before induction of IR. SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), GSH (glutathione), MPO (myeloperoxidase), MDA (malondialdehyde), and IL-6 (interleukin-6) levels were quantified by ELISA and the TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-α), 8-OHdG (8-hydroxylo-2'-deoxyguanosin) and Caspase-3 expressions were performed by immunohistochemical analyses. RESULTS BA and Prop pretreatment significantly reduced MPO, MDA, and IL-6 levels and pathologic score in IR rats, with no effects in control group. These agents used in therapy also decreased TNF-α, 8-OHdG and Caspase-3 protein expressions increased by IR. Furthermore, BA and Prop combination showed significant ameliorative effects on ovary injury caused by IR through acting as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic agent. CONCLUSION BA and Prop alone and especially in combination could be developed as therapeutic agents against ovary IR injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the evidence and provide recommendations on the diagnosis and management of adnexal torsion in children, adolescents, and women. OUTCOMES Elements evaluated include the risk factors, diagnostic accuracy, management options, and outcomes of adnexal torsion. EVIDENCE Published literature was retrieved through searches of MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library using appropriate controlled vocabulary and key words ("adnexal torsion," "ovarian torsion"). Results were restricted to systematic reviews, randomized control trials/controlled clinical trials, and observational studies. Searches were updated on a regular basis and new material incorporated in the guideline to December 2014. Grey (unpublished) literature was identified through searching the websites of health technology assessment and related agencies, clinical practice guideline collections, clinical trial registries, and national and international medical specialty societies. VALUES The evidence obtained was reviewed and evaluated by the Canadian Paediatric and Adolescent Gynaecology and Obstetrics Committee of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) under the leadership of the principal authors. Recommendations were made according to guidelines developed by the Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination. BENEFITS, HARMS AND COSTS Guideline implementation should assist the practitioner in developing an optimal approach to the diagnosis and management of adnexal torsion while minimizing harm and improving patient outcomes. VALIDATION These guidelines have been reviewed and approved by the Gynaecology Committee of the SOGC and approved by the council of the SOGC. Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Nigella sativa (N. sativa) oil (NSO) on ovarian oxidative damage following ischemia-reperfusion injury, using a rat model of ovarian torsion. Material/Methods Forty-eight female albino Wistar rats were divided into six groups: (Group 1) laparotomy only; (Group 2) intraperitoneal NSO (2 ml/kg), 1 hour following laparotomy; (Group 3) 3 hours of ovarian ischemia; (Group 4) 3 hours of ovarian ischemia followed by 3 hours of reperfusion; (Group 5) 3 hours of ovarian ischemia and 2 ml/kg of NSO 1 hour before laparotomy; (Group 6) 3 hours of reperfusion after 3 hours of ovarian ischemia and 2 ml/mg of NSO 1 hour before laparotomy. Results The antioxidant status, ceruloplasmin level, native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide levels of the control group (Group 1) were significantly increased compared with the ovarian ischemia-reperfusion group treated with NSO (Group 6) (p=0.003, p=0.002, p=0.006, p=0.001 and p=0.003, respectively); these levels in the ovarian ischemia group (Group 3) and ischemia-reperfusion group (Group 4) were statistically similar to those of the ovarian ischemia + NSO group (Group 5) and ovarian ischemia-reperfusion + NSO group (Group 6). Conclusions In this preliminary rat study, administration of NSO shortly after the onset of ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury, did not significantly reduce levels of markers of oxidative injury. Further studies are required to evaluate the ovarian changes at the tissue level, and to determine the optimum dose of NSO.

Abstract
Among the different causes of gynecological acute pelvic pain, ovarian torsion represents a surgical emergency. It is a rare case in the pediatric/adolescent aged group
that must be included in the differential diagnosis of any girl with abdominal pain or
pelvic/abdominal mass. Current recommendations suggest that laparoscopic detorsion should be performed in order to preserve the integrity of the ovaries and fertility,
although oophoropexy may be considered in case of severe necrosis. Nevertheless,
maintaining the circulation of the ovary after detorsion deteriorates the tissue injury
and leads to a pathologic process called ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which is
characterized by oxidative stress. During the detorsion process, an excess amount of
molecular oxygen is supplied to the tissues, and reactive species of oxygen (ROS)
such as superoxide radical (O2-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (OH•),
as well as reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are produced in excess. ROS, RNS and
their toxic products cause DNA damage and lipid peroxidation in the cellular and
mitochondrial membranes, leading to cell death. In spite of attention on this topic,
currently there is no shared and clear evidence about the use of anti-inflammatory
and antioxidant agents to prevent I/R damage after laparoscopic ovarian detorsion.
Considering this element, future research should aim to develop shared protocols for
the clinical use (route of application, dosage and time of application) of antioxidants
after laparoscopic management of this condition.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion injury is a significant problem following reperfusion treatment for ovarian torsion. It is generally caused by reactive oxygen species-induced damage. Antioxidant agents, such as curcumin, may protect ovaries from this adverse effect. The aim of the present randomized, controlled study was to evaluate the short-term protective effect of curcumin on a rat model of ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury. A total of 30 female Wistar albino rats, weighing 160-230 g, were divided into 2 groups depending upon the time of unilateral, left ovary ischemia/reperfusion (group 1, 2 h ischemia/2 h reperfusion and group 2, 4 h ischemia/4 h reperfusion). These groups were subdivided into 3 subgroups (sham, control and curcumin). The sham subgroups were not subjected to ischemia/reperfusion. Control and curcumin subgroups were performed under ischemia for 2 h plus 2 h reperfusion or 4 h ischemia plus 4 h reperfusion. Curcumin, 200 mg/kg, was intraperitoneally administered simultaneously with reperfusion to the curcumin subgroups. Serum nitric oxide (NO), NO synthase (NOS), xanthine oxidase (XO), total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and histological scores were measured and compared between subgroups. For group 1, no significant differences were observed between NO, NOS, XO, TAS or TOS. The left ovary histological grade was significantly higher in the control and curcumin subgroups compared with the sham subgroup (P=0.036). For group 2, TOS was significantly higher in the control group compared with the sham and curcumin groups (P=0.023). However, TAS was also significantly higher in the control subgroup compared with the other 2 subgroups (P=0.005). Left ovary histological grade was significantly higher in the control and curcumin subgroups compared with the sham subgroup (P=0.038). No significant differences were observed between NO, NOS or XO between the group 2 subgroups. The results showed that curcumin exerted no major significant protective effect on ischemia-reperfusion injury in the rat ovary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the protective effect of ethyl pyruvate (EP), an anti-oxidant agent, against ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat model of ovarian torsion, considering biochemical and histopathological aspects. METHODS Forty Wistar Albino rats were divided into five groups: Group I, sham operation; Group II, ischemia alone, Group III, ischemia-reperfusion; Group IV, ischemia-reperfusion+50 mg/kg EP; and Group V, ischemia-reperfusion+100 mg/kg EP. Through laparotomy, 360° torsion was performed and maintained for 3 h, and detorsion was maintained for a further 3 h. Intraperitoneal EP was given 30 min before the surgical procedure. Ovarian tissues and blood samples were obtained after surgery. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) levels were measured in both plasma and tissue samples. Tissue sections were evaluated histopatologically. Analysis of variance was used for statistical analyses. RESULTS In both serum and tissue samples, ADMA and MDA levels were found to be significantly lower in the EP groups compared with the ischemia alone and ischemia-reperfusion groups (p=0.0001). However, no significant difference was found between groups treated with 50 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg EP. On histopathological evaluation, the total tissue injury score was found to be lower in rats treated with EP. No significant difference was detected between groups treated with 50 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg EP. CONCLUSION Ethyl pyruvate may exert positive effects in ischemia-reperfusion injury in cases of ovarian torsion. However, no difference was detected between 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg EP.
