Optimization of maghemite-loaded PLGA nanospheres for biomedical applications

TiO2-Decorated by Nano-γ-Fe2O3 as a Catalyst for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Orange G Dye under Eco-friendly White LED Irradiation

Azo dyes make up a major class of dyes that have been widely studied for their diverse applications. In this study, we successfully applied nano-γ-Fe2O3/TiO2 as a nanocatalyst to improve the photodegradation efficiency of azo dyes (Orange G (OG) dye as a model) from aqueous solution under white light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation. We also investigated the degradation mechanisms and pathways of OG dye as well as the effects of the initial pH value, amount of H2O2, catalyst dosage, and dye concentration on the degradation processes. The characterizations of nano-γ-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3 Nps/TiO2 were carried out using various techniques, including X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. The efficiency of the photodegradation reaction of OG was found to follow pseudo-first-order kinetics (Langmuir-Hinshelwood model) with a rate constant of 0.0338 min-1 and an R2 of 0.9906. Scavenger experiments revealed that hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anion radicals were the dominant species in the OG photocatalytic oxidation mechanism. This work provides a new method for designing highly efficient heterostructure-based photocatalysts (γ-Fe2O3 Nps/TiO2) based on LED light irradiation for environmental applications.

Delivery of drugs, proteins, and nucleic acids using inorganic nanoparticles

Inorganic nanoparticles provide multipurpose platforms for a broad range of delivery applications. Intrinsic nanoscopic properties provide access to unique magnetic and optical properties. Equally importantly, the structural and functional diversity of gold, silica, iron oxide, and lanthanide-based nanocarriers provide unrivalled control of nanostructural properties for effective transport of therapeutic cargos, overcoming biobarriers on the cellular and organismal level. Taken together, inorganic nanoparticles provide a key addition to the arsenal of delivery vectors for fighting disease and improving human health.

High saturation magnetization of γ-Fe2O3 nano-particles by a facile one-step synthesis approach

We have demonstrated the synthesis of γ-Fe₂O₃ nano-particles through a facile and novel calcination process in the air. There is no pH regulation, gas atmosphere, additive, centrifugation or other complicated procedures during the preparing process. A detailed formation process of the nano-particles is proposed, and DMF as a polar solvent may slower the reaction process of calcination. The structures, morphologies, and magnetic properties of γ-Fe₂O₃ nano-particles were investigated systematically, and the pure γ-Fe₂O₃ nano-particles obtained at 200 °C display uniform morphology good magnetic property. The saturation magnetization of obtained pure γ-Fe₂O₃ is about 74 emu/g, which is comparable with bulk material (76 emu/g) and larger than other results. In addition, the photocatalytic activity for degradation of methylene blue is also studied, which shows proper photocatalytic activity.

Synthesis, characteristics and sonocatalytic activities of calcined γ-Fe2O3 and TiO2 nanotubes/γ-Fe2O3 magnetic catalysts in the degradation of Orange G

In this work, γ-Fe2O3 and TiO2 NTs/γ-Fe2O3 composites with good magnetism and sonocatalytic activity were prepared by a facile polyol method and utilize the principle of isoelectric point method, respectively. The structural and magnetic features of the prepared calcined γ-Fe2O3 and composite catalysts were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface analysis, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-Vis DRS), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and zeta potential analysis. The effects of calcination temperature on γ-Fe2O3 phase variation, physical properties and sonocatalytic properties were investigated. The porosity, specific surface area, band gap energy and sonocatalytic activity of γ-Fe2O3 were gradually decreased with calcination temperature increased. TiO2 NTs/γ-Fe2O3 with appropriate composition and specific structural features possess synergetic effects such as efficient separation of charge carriers and hydroxyl radicals produced by heterogeneous fenton and fenton-like reactions. This enhanced the sonocatalytic activity for the degradation of Orange G under ultrasonic irradiation. The sonocatalytic reactions obeyed pseudo first-order kinetics. All these information provide insight into the design and development of high-efficiency catalyst for wastewater treatment.

Synthesis and dose interval dependent hepatotoxicity evaluation of intravenously administered polyethylene glycol-8000 coated ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle on Wistar rats

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are being used in medical imaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, and so on. However, there is a direct need to identify any nanotoxicity associated with these nanoparticles. However uncommon, drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major health concern that challenges pharmaceutical industry and drug regulatory agencies alike. In this study we have synthesized and evaluated the dose interval dependent hepatotoxicity of polyethylene glycol-8000 coated ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (PUSPIOs). To assess the hepatotoxicity of intravenously injected PUSPIOs, alterations in basic clinical parameters, hematological parameters, hemolysis assay, serum levels of liver marker enzymes, serum and liver lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels, enzymatic antioxidant levels, and finally histology of liver, kidney, spleen, lung, brain, and heart tissues were studied in control and experimental Wistar rat groups over a 30-day period. The results of our study showed a significant increase in the aspartate transaminase (AST) enzyme activity at a dose of 10mg/kg b.w. PUSPIOs twice a week. Besides, alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (γGT) enzyme activity showed a slender increase when compared with control experimental groups. A significant increase in the serum and liver LPO levels at a dose of 10mg/kg b.w. PUSPIOs twice a week was also observed. Histological analyses of liver, kidney, spleen, lung, brain and heart tissue samples showed no obvious uncharacteristic changes. In conclusion, PUSPIOs were found to posses excellent biocompatibility and Wistar rats showed much better drug tolerance to the dose of 10mg/kg b.w. per week than the dose of 10mg/kg b.w. twice a week for the period of 30 days.
