Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Currently, there is a significant focus on the decrease of soluble receptor of advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) in neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders. sRAGE plays a decoy role against the inflammatory response of advanced glycation end products (AGE), which has led to increased interest in its role in these disorders. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the significant differences in sRAGE levels between neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders compared to control groups. METHOD A systematic review was conducted using the PUBMED, Scopus and Embase databases up to October 2023. Two reviewers assessed agreement for selecting papers based on titles and abstracts, with kappa used to measure agreement and finally publications were scanned according to controlled studies. Effect sizes were calculated as weighted mean differences (WMD) and pooled using a random effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2, followed by subgroup analysis and meta-regression tests. Quality assessment was performed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. RESULTS In total, 16 studies were included in the present meta-analysis. Subjects with neurocognitive (n = 1444) and neuropsychiatric (n = 444) disorders had lower sRAGE levels in case-control (WMD: -0.21, 95% CI: -0.33, -0.10; p <.001) and cross-sectional (WMD: -0.29, 95% CI = -0.44, -0.13, p <.001) studies with high heterogeneity and no publication bias. In subgroup analysis, subjects with cognitive impairment (WMD: -0.87, 95% CI: -1.61, -0.13, p =.000), and age >50 years (WMD: -0.39, 95% CI: -0.74, -0.05, p =.000), had lower sRAGE levels in case-control studies. Also, dementia patients (WMD: -0.41, 95% CI: -0.72, -0.10, p =.014) with age >50 years (WMD: -0.33, 95% CI: -0.54, -0.13, p = 0.000) and in Asian countries (WMD: -0.28, 95% CI: -0.42, -0.13, p =.141) had lower sRAGE levels in cross-sectional studies. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis revealed a significant reduction in sRAGE in neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric disorders particularly in Asians and moderate age.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) have an important role in the development of chronic complications in diabetes mellitus and in renal failure. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) is a simple noninvasive optical technique to estimate AGE levels in the dermis. SAF increases with age, but rises more rapidly in diabetes and renal failure, and is also associated with, and a predictor of their complications. RECENT FINDINGS In recent large population studies, SAF is a strong predictor of development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and in persons with known diabetes of its complications. SAF also predicts new cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality not only in individuals with known type 2 diabetes but also in the general population. SUMMARY SAF is a simple, powerful and independent predictor for development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and also for cardiovascular disease and mortality in both persons with diabetes, and in the general population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The accumulation of tissue-advanced glycation end products in skin results from complex and consecutive reactions and can be measured by skin autofluorescence (SAF) reader devices. This overview discusses studies evaluating the utilization of SAF in screening renal and cardiac disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Literature search was performed using Google Scholar, PubMed, Springer, Ovid, and ScienceDirect. RESULTS SAF was an independent predictor of progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and was elevated in subjects on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Furthermore, SAF was significantly associated with cardiovascular events, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality in CKD patients. Other studies revealed a correlation between SAF and arterial stiffness, vascular damage, and subclinical atherosclerosis. A vegetarian diet was associated with lower SAF levels, whereas malnutrition was correlated with higher levels and increased mortality. CONCLUSIONS SAF measurement may be useful in managing renal and cardiac disease. Future studies are needed to clarify the specific role of SAF in the management of CKD and its noninvasive office utilization to identify comorbidities in inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between skin autofluorescence (SAF), as a measure of advanced glycation end-product (AGE) accumulation and osteoporosis and clinical symptoms in hemodialysis patients. Methodology The study participants were 156 hemodialysis patients (97 males, 59 females, mean = 66.9 years, range = 25-92 years) who visited our hospital between October 2019 and March 2020. The average dialysis period was 10.4 years (range = 1-40 years). Age, years of dialysis, bone mineral density, bone metabolism markers (Ca, P, intact parathyroid hormone, total N-terminal propeptide of type 1 collagen, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b), clinical symptoms, and SAF were evaluated. Clinical symptoms were evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) score for low back pain (LBP) and leg pain ranging from 10 mm (extreme amount of pain) to 0 mm (no pain); the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire (JOABPEQ; 0-100 points); and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RDQ; 0-24 points). We calculated Pearson correlation coefficients to assess the correlation of SAF with age, years of hemodialysis, bone density, bone metabolism markers, clinical symptoms, and biochemical markers. Results The SAF of dialysis patients averaged 4.11, higher than previous reports for non-dialysis patients. Age (r = 0.435, p = 0.0001) was moderately positively correlated and hemodialysis period (r = 0.214, p = 0.00907) was weakly positively correlated with SAF. Among the clinical symptoms measured by the JOABPEQ, social life dysfunction (r = -0.257, p = 0.0108) had a weak negative correlation with SAF. Conclusions The level of AGEs implied by SAF was elevated in hemodialysis patients. SAF correlated with social life disorders, suggesting that SAF may be involved in disorders of activities of daily living in hemodialysis dialysis patients.

Abstract
Background: in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the inflammatory and pro-oxidant milieu may contribute to malnutrition development. In this study, we investigated the relationship between inflammation, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and their receptors (RAGEs) with malnutrition in CKD patients. Methods: we evaluated 117 patients. AGEs were quantified by fluorescence intensity using a fluorescence spectrophotometer, soluble RAGEs isoforms, and inflammatory interleukins by ELISA. Malnutrition was assessed by a malnutrition inflammation score. Results: mean age was 80 ± +11 years, eGFR was 25 ± +11 mL/min/1.73 m2 and BMI was 28 ± 5 Kg/m2. Malnourished individuals were older, had lower estimated protein intake (nPCR 0.65 ± 0.2 vs. 0.8 ± 0.2 vs. 0.8 ± 0.3, p = 0.01), higher C reactive protein (CRP 0.6 ± 1 vs. 0.6 ± 0.7 vs. 0.17 ± 0.13, p = 0.02) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF α 14.7 ± 8.7 vs. 15.6 ± 8 vs. 11.8 ± 5.8, p = 0.029). Malnourished patients had higher sRAGE (2813 ± 1477 vs. 2158 ± 1236 vs. 2314 ± 1115, p = 0.035) and esRAGE (648 [408–1049] vs. 476 [355–680] vs. 545 [380–730] p = 0.033). In the multivariate analysis, only sRAGE maintained its association with malnutrition (p = 0.02) independently of aging and inflammation. Conclusions: in CKD patients, RAGEs isoforms, but not AGEs, are associated with malnutrition, irrespective of systemic inflammation, aging, and renal function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are affected by dynapenia, sarcopenia, and vascular calcification. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) may accumulate in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and favor sarcopenia via changes in collagen cross-linking, muscle protein breakdown, and the calcification of arterial smooth muscle cells via p38-MAPK activation. The aim of this study is to explore the relationships between AGEs, muscle degeneration, and coronary artery calcification. METHODS This was a clinical observational study in patients with CKD undergoing PD, in which serum and skin AGEs (AGEs-sAF), cumulative glucose load, muscle strength and functional tests, muscle ultrasounds with elastography, coronary artery calcium (CAC) quantification, and muscle density by multislice computed tomography were measured. RESULTS 27 patients aged 48±16 years, dialysis vintage of 27±17 months, had AGEs-sAF levels of 3.09±0.65 AU (elevated in 13 [87%] patients), grip strength levels of 26.2±9.2 kg (11 [42%] patients with dynapenia), gait speed of 1.04±0.3 m/s (abnormal in 14 [58%] patients) and "timed-up-and-go test" (TUG) of 10.5±2.2s (abnormal in 7 [26%] patients). Correlations between AGEs-sAF levels and femoral rectus elastography (R=-0.74; p=0.02), anterior-tibialis elastography (R= -0.68; p=0.04) and CAC (R=0.64; p=0.04) were detected. Cumulative glucose load correlated with femoral rectal elastography (R=-0.6; p=0.02), and serum glycated hemoglobin concentrations correlated with psoas muscle density (R= -0.58; p=0.04) and CAC correlated with psoas muscle density (R=0.57; p=0.01) and lumbar square muscle density (R=-0.63; p=0.005). CONCLUSIONS The study revealed associations between AGEs accumulation and lower muscle stiffness/density. Associations that linked muscle degeneration parameters with vascular calcification were observed.
