Abstract
The identification of active sites in electrocatalytic reactions is part of the elucidation of mechanisms of catalyzed reactions on solid surfaces. However, this is not an easy task, even for apparently simple reactions, as we sometimes think the oxidation of adsorbed CO is. For surfaces consisting of non-equivalent sites, the recognition of specific active sites must consider the influence that facets, as is the steps/defect on the surface of the catalyst, cause in its neighbors; one has to consider the electrochemical environment under which the "active sites" lie on the surface, meaning that defects/steps on the surface do not partake in chemistry by themselves. In this paper, we outline the recent efforts in understanding the close relationships between site-specific and the overall rate and/or selectivity of electrocatalytic reactions. We analyze hydrogen adsorption/desorption, and electro-oxidation of CO, methanol, and ammonia. The classical topic of asymmetric electrocatalysis on kinked surfaces is also addressed for glucose electro-oxidation. The article takes into account selected existing data combined with our original works.

Abstract
The formation of a self-organized spatial domain during current-controlled CO oxidation, a kinetically bistable reaction, is investigated experimentally and by deterministic simulations as a function of the electrode size and of the supporting electrolyte concentration. Decreasing the microelectrode size leads to the suppression of the spatial instability at the electrode and thus stabilizes the S-NDR branch of the reaction. The critical microelectrode size capable of supporting sustained domain formation is shown to be strongly affected by the sulfuric acid concentration, the characteristic time of the positive feedback loop increasing with the sulfate concentration. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for microelectrode diameters close to the instability threshold, small amplitude electrochemical potential fluctuations appear in the system. These potential fluctuations cannot be captured by deterministic mathematical models and are attributed to a strong enhancement of molecular fluctuations or intrinsic noise in the vicinity of the spatial instability. Analysis of the electrochemical noise revealed a 1/f 2 frequency dependence and several common features with neuronal shot noise.

Abstract
The suitability and potential of shape selected nanocrystals for in situ spectro-electrochemical and in particular spectro-electrocatalytic studies on structurally well defined electrodes under enforced and controlled electrolyte mass transport will be demonstrated, using Pt nanocrystals prepared by colloidal synthesis procedures and a flow cell set-up allowing simultaneous measurements of the Faradaic current, FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed reaction intermediates and side products in an attenuated total reflection configuration (ATR-FTIRS) and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) measurements of volatile reaction products. Batches of shape-selected Pt nanocrystals with different shapes and hence different surface structures were prepared and structurally characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical methods. The potential for in situ spectro-electrocatalytic studies is illustrated for COad oxidation on Pt nanocrystal surfaces, where we could separate contributions from two processes occurring simultaneously, oxidative COad removal and re-adsorption of (bi)sulfate anions, and reveal a distinct structure sensitivity in these processes and also in the structural implications of (bi)sulfate re-adsorption on the CO adlayer.
