Single gold nanowires with ultrahigh (>104) aspect ratios by triphasic electrodeposition

Due to their superior optical and electrical properties, gold nanowires are used ubiquitously across industries. Current techniques for fabricating such structures are often expensive, involving multiple steps, cleanroom operation, and limited ability for a user to controllably place a nanowire at a desired location. Here, we introduce the concept of triphasic electrodeposition, where metal salts act as antagonistic salts at the liquid|liquid interface, leading to their increased concentration at this phase boundary. We show that the electrodeposition of ultra-high aspect ratio gold nanowires may be achieved in a one-step, one-pot method by submerging a conductor in contact with two phases: an organic phase containing HAuCl4 and a quaternary ammonium salt, and an aqueous phase containing potassium chloride. Changing electrodeposition parameters in the triphasic system allows tunability of important features of the nanowire, such as size and thickness. Furthermore, this new method provides an impressive ability to choose the geometry and precise positioning of deposited nanowires simply by changing where a liquid|liquid interface contacts the electrode surface.

Electrochemically assisted generation of silica deposits using a surfactant template at liquid/liquid microinterfaces

The electrochemically assisted generation of mesoporous silica deposits at arrays of microscopic liquid/liquid interfaces was investigated. Ion transfer voltammetry was used in order to initiate the formation of silica material by electrochemical transfer of template species (cetyltrimethylammonium, CTA(+)), initially present in the organic phase, to the aqueous phase containing the hydrolyzed silica precursors (tetraethoxysilane, TEOS). The deposition mechanism was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, based on the analysis of diffusion layer profiles of CTA(+) species from the organic side of the interface. The morphology of the deposits varied from hemispherical to almost flat with the potential scan rate, the spacing factor of the microinterfaces array supporting the liquid/liquid interfaces, or the initial CTA(+) and TEOS concentrations, as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy and profilometry analyses. The amount of deposited material can be related to the amount of CTA(+) species passing across the liquid/liquid interfaces. Confocal Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the presence of surfactant-templated silica deposits and to analyze the effectiveness of calcination in removing the organic molecules filling the interior of the pores. After template removal, the mesoporous network became accessible to external reagents, as checked by interfacial alkylammonium cation transfer, suggesting a possible analytical interest of such modified micro-liquid/liquid interfaces.

Anomalous effect of flow rate on the electrochemical behavior at a liquid|liquid interface under microfluidic conditions

We have investigated the oxidation of ferrocene at a flowing organic solvent|aqueous electrolyte|solid electrode junction in a microfluidic setup using cyclic voltammetry and fluorescent laser scanning confocal microscopy. At low flow rates the oxidation current decreases with increasing flow, contrary to the Levich equation, but at higher flow rates the current increases linearly with the cube root of the flow rate. This behavior is explained using a simple model postulating a smallest effective width of the three-phase junction, which after fitting to the data comes to be ca. 20 μm. The fluorescence microscopy reveals mixing of the two phases close to the PDMS cover, but the liquid|liquid junction is stable close to the glass support. This study shows the importance of the solid|liquid|liquid junctions for the behavior of multiphase systems under microfluidic conditions.
