Rapid and sensitive detection of Rhodamine B in food using the plasmonic silver nanocube-based sensor as SERS active substrate

The use of dye in food is harmful to human health and is prohibited nowadays. However, it is still used because of the benefits, such as cheap prices and abundant resources. Rhodamine B is usually used as the colorant in food such as chili powder, chili oil, etc. It is colorless at very low concentration 10^-7 M. The sensitive detection of RhB at ultra-low concentration help to prevent some risk for human. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a great technique to detect the analytes at ultra-low concentration and provide the molecule's information as a fingerprint. In this study, silver nano-cube was facilely synthesized by reducing Ag⁺ in ethylene glycol and upgraded to thin-film as a SERS active substrate. RhB was detected at 10^-10 M by a silver nano-cube sensor. The dynamic linear regression between the Raman intensity and RhB concentration over seven orders of magnitude (from 10^-4 to 10^-10 M) was excellent with high reliability (R² = 0.99). Moreover, the substrate can be used after storing in a dark area for 60 days. This proposed nano-cube silver could serve as a potential substrate for detecting RhB in food at very low concentration.

Mixed sp2-sp3 Nanocarbon Materials: A Status Quo Review

Carbon nanomaterials with a different character of the chemical bond-graphene (sp2) and nanodiamond (sp3)-are the building bricks for a new class of all-carbon hybrid nanomaterials, where the two different carbon networks with sp3 and sp2 hybridization coexist, interacting and even transforming into one another. The extraordinary physiochemical properties defined by the unique electronic band structure of the two border nanoallotropes ensure the immense application potential and versatility of these all-carbon nanomaterials. The review summarizes the status quo of sp2 - sp3 nanomaterials, including graphene/graphene-oxide-nanodiamond composites and hybrids, graphene/graphene-oxide-diamond heterojunctions, and other sp2-sp3 nanocarbon hybrids for sensing, electronic, and other emergent applications. Novel sp2-sp3 transitional nanocarbon phases and architectures are also discussed. Furthermore, the two-way sp2 (graphene) to sp3 (diamond surface and nanodiamond) transformations at the nanoscale, essential for innovative fabrication, and stability and chemical reactivity assessment are discussed based on extensive theoretical, computational and experimental studies.

Diamond like carbon nanocomposites with embedded metallic nanoparticles

In this work we present an overview on structure formation, optical and electrical properties of diamond like carbon (DLC) based metal nanocomposites deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering and treated by plasma and laser ablation methods. The influence of deposition mode and other technological conditions on the properties of the nanosized filler, matrix components and composition were studied systematically in relation to the final properties of the nanocomposites. Applications of the nanocomposites in the development of novel biosensors combining resonance response of wave guiding structures in DLC based nanocomposites as well as plasmonic effects are also presented.

Graphene- gold based nanocomposites applications in cancer diseases; Efficient detection and therapeutic tools

Early detection and efficient treatment of cancer disease remains a drastic challenge in 21st century. Throughout the bulk of funds, studies, and current therapeutics, cancer seems to aggressively advance with drug resistance strains and recurrence rates. Nevertheless, nanotechnologies have indeed given hope to be the next generation for oncology applications. According to US National cancer institute, it is anticipated to revolutionize the perspectives of cancer diagnosis and therapy. With such success, nano-hybrid strategy creates a marvelous preference. Herein, graphene-gold based composites are being increasingly studied in the field of oncology, for their outstanding performance as robust vehicle of therapeutic agents, built-in optical diagnostic features, and functionality as theranostic system. Additional modes of treatments are also applicable including photothermal, photodynamic, as well as combined therapy. This review aims to demonstrate the various cancer-related applications of graphene-gold based hybrids in terms of detection and therapy, highlighting the major attributes that led to designate such system as a promising ally in the war against cancer.

Graphene-Gold Nanoparticles Hybrid-Synthesis, Functionalization, and Application in a Electrochemical and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Biosensor

Graphene is a single-atom-thick two-dimensional carbon nanosheet with outstanding chemical, electrical, material, optical, and physical properties due to its large surface area, high electron mobility, thermal conductivity, and stability. These extraordinary features of graphene make it a key component for different applications in the biosensing and imaging arena. However, the use of graphene alone is correlated with certain limitations, such as irreversible self-agglomerations, less colloidal stability, poor reliability/repeatability, and non-specificity. The addition of gold nanostructures (AuNS) with graphene produces the graphene-AuNS hybrid nanocomposite which minimizes the limitations as well as providing additional synergistic properties, that is, higher effective surface area, catalytic activity, electrical conductivity, water solubility, and biocompatibility. This review focuses on the fundamental features of graphene, the multidimensional synthesis, and multipurpose applications of graphene-Au nanocomposites. The paper highlights the graphene-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) as the platform substrate for the fabrication of electrochemical and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based biosensors in diverse applications as well as SERS-directed bio-imaging, which is considered as an emerging sector for monitoring stem cell differentiation, and detection and treatment of cancer.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering from AgNP-graphene-AgNP sandwiched nanostructures

We developed a facile approach toward hybrid AgNP-graphene-AgNP sandwiched structures using self-organized monolayered AgNPs from wet chemical synthesis for the optimized enhancement of the Raman response of monolayer graphene. We demonstrate that the Raman scattering of graphene can be enhanced 530 fold in the hybrid structure. The Raman enhancement is sensitively dependent on the hybrid structure, incident angle, and excitation wavelength. A systematic simulation is performed, which well explains the enhancement mechanism. Our study indicates that the enhancement resulted from the plasmonic coupling between the AgNPs on the opposite sides of graphene. Our approach towards ideal substrates offers great potential to produce a "hot surface" for enhancing the Raman response of two-dimensional materials.

Graphene-based hybrid films for plasmonic sensing

Graphene, a one-atomic-layer-thick planar sheet of sp(2)-bonded carbon configured in a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice, has attracted considerable research interest with regard to sensing-related applications owing to its extraordinary electronic, optical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Graphene plasmonics may be excited in the mid-infrared-to-terahertz regions with high spatial confinement, low loss, and excellent tunability. Meanwhile, graphene can be utilized to tune the plasmonic properties of conventional metallic nanostructures in the visible and near-infrared regions, allowing it to act as a versatile component in various plasmonic applications. This article reviews the recent progress in graphene-based hybrid films used for plasmonic sensing and detection. We particularly emphasize on the unique roles and advantages of graphene in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for bare graphene or graphene-metal hybrid films, and plasmonic refractive index (RI) sensing for graphene-metal or graphene-insulator hybrids, among other plasmonic sensing applications. The preparation of graphene-based hybrid films, their functionalization and signal detection techniques are also reviewed. Finally, the perspectives and current challenges in the use of graphene-based hybrid films for plasmonic sensing are outlined.

SERS activity of Ag decorated nanodiamond and nano-β-SiC, diamond-like-carbon and thermally annealed diamond thin film surfaces

In the recent past surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based bio-sensing has gained prominence owing to the simplicity and efficiency of the SERS technique. Dedicated and continuous research efforts have been made to develop SERS substrates that are not only stable, durable and reproducible but also facilitate real-time bio-sensing. In this context diamond, β-SiC and diamond-like-carbon (DLC) and other related thin films have been promoted as excellent candidates for bio-technological applications including real time bio-sensing. In this work, SERS activities of nanodiamond, nano-β-SiC, DLC, thermally annealed diamond thin film surfaces were examined. DLC and thermally annealed diamond thin films were found to show SERS activity without any metal nanostructures on their surfaces. The observed SERS activities of the considered surfaces are explained in terms of the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism and charge transfer resonance process.

Adjustable plasmonic optical properties of hollow gold nanospheres monolayers and LSPR-dependent surface-enhanced Raman scattering of hollow gold nanosphere/graphene oxide hybrids

Colloidal hollow gold nanospheres with adjustable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties were synthesized and self-assembled into HGNs monolayers for investigation of LSPR-dependent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) behavior.

Highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering based on multi-dimensional plasmonic coupling in Au-graphene-Ag hybrids

We report an efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate by utilizing the multi-dimensional plasmonic coupling in Au nanoparticle (NP)-graphene-Ag NP hybrid structures. An ultrasensitive SERS detection with a limit of down to 10(-13) M has been achieved when the sandwiched hybrid film is fabricated on an Ag substrate.

Strong light-matter interactions in sub-nanometer gaps defined by monolayer graphene: toward highly sensitive SERS substrates

The interactions between visible light and sub-nanometer gaps were investigated by sandwiching graphene between two layers of vertically stacked Au nanoparticles. The optical properties of such a hybrid film have been effectively tuned by embedding a monolayer graphene, enabling a suppressed transmission of ∼16% accompanied by a red-shift of the resonant wavelength. Finite element simulations have shown that the strong coupling between two layers of plasmonic Au nanoparticles leads to an electric field enhancement of up to 88 times in graphene defined vertical gaps, in contrast to that of 14 times in the horizontal gaps between Au nanoparticles formed in the fabrication process. In addition, the size of gaps and thus the field enhancement can be readily tuned by the number of graphene layers sandwiched between Au nanoparticles. When being used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, the Au nanoparticle/graphene/Au nanoparticle structures have demonstrated high Raman enhancement factors of up to 1.6 × 10(8) for RhB and 2.5 × 10(8) for R6G, and a detection limit of as low as 0.1 nM for Sudan III and methylene blue molecules.
