Chitosan catalyzes hydrogen evolution at mercury electrodes

Adsorption/desorption behavior of hyaluronic acid fragments at charged hydrophobic surface

This work reveals the growing potential of novel electrochemical methods that are applicable for polysaccharides. It was shown for the first time that the molecules of hyaluronic acid (HA) exhibit electrochemical response using phase-sensitive alternating current (AC) voltammetry in phase-out mode. Adsorption and desorption processes of HA fragments at a charged interface of mercury electrode were observed in buffered HA solutions. Electrostatic and hydrophobic manners of interactions were distinguished for native hyaluronan fragments in a wide electric potential range. The AC voltammetry response depended on the temperature, concentration, and length of HA chains. Results of this work open possibilities for further structural characterization of widely used HA fragments and understanding manners of interactions with charged hydrophobic surfaces that could be useful in the future for understanding HA interactions at biological levels.

Data of characterization of sodium pectate complexes with iron and manganese

Data for iron and manganese-containing sodium pectate complexes are reported. Such complexes are potentially capable of exhibiting catalytic properties to the electroreduction of small molecules. Also, the complexes are water-soluble due to their ligands. The combination of these factors makes them promising for homogeneous electrocatalysis. However, in many respects, these complexes remain poorly understood. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data for the sodium pectate complexes with manganese and iron in the range of 500–4000 cm⁻¹ were obtained. The electron spin resonance spectra of the complexes make it possible to characterize oxidation states of the metal centers in the complexes. The cyclic voltammetry data for the complexes both in an aqueous solution saturated with argon and saturated with carbon dioxide were received. For both complexes after deposition of the complexes on graphite managed to get micrographs by the atomic force microscopy method.

A Water-Soluble Sodium Pectate Complex with Copper as an Electrochemical Catalyst for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

A selective noble-metal-free molecular catalyst has emerged as a fruitful approach in the quest for designing efficient and stable catalytic materials for CO2 reduction. In this work, we report that a sodium pectate complex of copper (PG-NaCu) proved to be highly active in the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 in water. Stability and selectivity of conversion of CO2 to CH4 as a product at a glassy carbon electrode were discovered. The copper complex PG-NaCu was synthesized and characterized by physicochemical methods. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) proceeds at -1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl at ~10 mA/cm2 current densities in the presence of the catalyst. The current density decreases by less than 20% within 12 h of electrolysis (the main decrease occurs in the first 3 h of electrolysis in the presence of CO2). This copper pectate complex (PG-NaCu) combines the advantages of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, the stability of heterogeneous solid materials and the performance (high activity and selectivity) of molecular catalysts.

Bovine Serum Albumin Catalysed Hydrogen and Deuterium Evolution at Mercury Electrodes

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), catalysed by proteins at mercury electrodes and reflected in chronopotentiometric stripping peak H, provides a label-free and reagentless analytical technique that is sensitive to protein structure. Here we show how the kinetic isotope effect affected the HER catalysed by the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA). We found that the deuteron bond, which is stronger than that of a proton, contributed to less effective transport of deuterons mediated by BSA at the Hg|D₂ O interface, and enhanced structural stability of the surface-attached native BSA in D₂ O solution. A structural transition was also observed in the surface-attached urea-denatured BSA, and is probably due to the destabilisation of some secondary structural remnants retained by the 17 SS-bonds. Because the catalytically active groups involved in proton or deuteron transfer in native proteins are often exposed towards solutions and their protons exchange almost instantly, no signs of H/D exchange were observed in native BSA using peak H under the given conditions.

Cyclic and square wave voltammetry of chitooligosaccharides modified by osmium(VI) tetramethylethylenediamine

Compounds containing vicinal diol (glycol) groups, including saccharides, could be modified with sixvalent osmium complexes with nitrogenous ligands, particularly with N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (Os(VI)tem). The modification products are electrochemically active. Here we show that aminosaccharides can also be modified by Os(VI)tem. We studied chitosan oligosaccharides in their acetylated and deacetylated form in 0.2 M Na-phosphate, pH 6.9. Deacetylated chitosan oligosaccharides with free amino groups modified by Os(VI)tem yielded two peaks (peak I' at -0.15 V and peak II' at about -0.38 V) despite the fact that these oligomers contain only one glycol group on the non-reducing end of the molecule. The electrochemical behavior of Os(VI)tem modified deacetylated chitosan oligomers differs from Os(VI)tem modified simple saccharides, containing only glycol groups, predominantly in peak I'. Our results suggest that free amino groups are involved in Os(VI)tem modification of chitosan oligomers.

Adsorption/desorption of biomacromolecules involved in catalytic hydrogen evolution

Previously, it has been shown that proteins and some polysaccharides (PSs) catalyse hydrogen evolution, producing electrochemical signals on mercury electrodes. The catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (CHER) of the above-mentioned biomacromolecules was studied by voltammetric and chronopotentiometric stripping (CPS) methods. To obtain more information about electrode processes involving CHER, here we used protein such as BSA, and chitosan as a PS; in addition, we investigated dextran as a control PS not involved in CHER. We studied biomacromolecules by phase-sensitive alternating current (AC) voltammetry. Using phase-in AC voltammetry, for CHER-involved biomacromolecules we observed a CHER peak at highly negative potentials, similar to that observed with other voltammetric and CPS methods. On the other hand, by means of the adsorption/desorption processes studied in phase-out AC voltammetry, we uncovered a sharp and narrow decrease of capacitive current in the potential range of the CHER peak, denominated as the tensammetric minimum. This minimum was closely related to the CHER peak, as demonstrated by similar dependences on specific conditions affecting the CHER peak such as buffer capacity and pH. A tensammetric minimum was not observed for dextran. Our results suggest specific organization of biopolymer layers at negative potentials observed only in biomacromolecules involved in CHER.
