Effect of electroconvection during pulsed electric field electrodialysis. Numerical experiments

Influence of Concentration Gradients on Electroconvection at a Cation-Exchange Membrane Surface

Membrane-based systems, such as electrodialysis, play an important role in desalination and industrial separation processes. Electrodialysis uses alternating anion- and cation-exchange membranes with a perpendicular electric field to generate concentrated and diluate streams from a feed solution. It is known that under overlimiting current conditions, reduced charge and mass transfer at the membrane interface leads to regions of high ion depletion generating instability and vortices termed electroconvection. While electroconvective mixing is known to directly impact the separation efficiency of electrodialysis, the influence of ion concentration gradients across the membrane experienced in a functional electrodialysis system is not known. Here, we report the influence of ion concentration gradients across a cation exchange membrane (Nafion) that is both aligned with and opposed to the applied electric field. Experiments were conducted by coflowing NaCl solutions of different concentrations (0.1-100 mM) on each side of the membrane, and electroconvection was visualized with a fluorescence dye (Rhodamine 6G). We obtained concentration profiles from fluorescence image data and systematically measured the thickness of the depletion boundary layer dBL under different conditions. We found smaller dBL values at a higher flow rate both with and without concentration gradients. Our results show that electroconvection is enhanced when the electric field is opposite to the direction of the concentration gradient.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of an Autowave Process in a Magnetic Fluid

Magnetic fluid (MF) is a colloidal system consisting of ferromagnetic particles (magnetite) with a diameter of ~10 nm suspended in a dispersion medium of a carrier fluid (for example, kerosene). A distinctive feature of magnetic fluid is the fact that when an electric field is applied to it using two electrodes, thin layers consisting of close-packed particles of the dispersed phase are formed in the regions near the surface of both electrodes. These layers significantly affect the macroscopic properties of the colloidal system. In this work, the interpretation of the near-electrode layer is for the first time given as a new type of liquid membrane, in which the particles of the dispersed phase become charged with the opposite sign. On the basis of experimental studies, we propose a physicochemical mechanism of the autowave process in a cell with a magnetic fluid. It is based on the idea of oppositely recharging colloidal particles of magnetite in a liquid membrane. A mathematical model of an autowave process, which is described by a system of coupled partial differential equations of Nernst–Planck–Poisson and Navier–Stokes with appropriate boundary conditions, is proposed for the first time. One-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional versions of the model are considered. The dependence of the frequency of concentration fluctuations on the stationary voltage between the electrodes was obtained, and the time of formation of a liquid membrane was estimated. Qualitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results has been established.

Pulsed electric field-assisted overlimiting current enhancement through a perm-selective membrane

Overlimiting current through a perm-selective membrane has been actively researched not only for the fundamental advancement of electrokinetics but also for energy/environmental applications such as electrodialysis, fuel cells, etc. In particular, various strategies were reported for the enhancement of overlimiting current because these applications demand efficient mass transport through the membrane. In this work, we presented in operando visualization and rigorous numerical study for the overlimiting current density enhancement using a pulsed electric field which is one of the most cost-effective parameters to be externally controlled. We clearly demonstrated that the current density had a peak value as a function of the pulse frequency and would suggest its correlation to a concentration profile and diffusion relaxation time ([small tau, Greek, tilde]diff). As the pulse frequency was chosen which is similar to ([small tau, Greek, tilde]diff)-1, the concentration profiles (i.e. established current paths) were maintained even in off-state due to remnant current paths helping the fast ion transportation. The fundamental evidence presented in this work would provide a strategical design of a perm-selective membrane system for a higher mass transportation efficiency.

Frontiers of Membrane Desalination Processes for Brackish Water Treatment: A Review

Climate change, population growth, and increased industrial activities are exacerbating freshwater scarcity and leading to increased interest in desalination of saline water. Brackish water is an attractive alternative to freshwater due to its low salinity and widespread availability in many water-scarce areas. However, partial or total desalination of brackish water is essential to reach the water quality requirements for a variety of applications. Selection of appropriate technology requires knowledge and understanding of the operational principles, capabilities, and limitations of the available desalination processes. Proper combination of feedwater technology improves the energy efficiency of desalination. In this article, we focus on pressure-driven and electro-driven membrane desalination processes. We review the principles, as well as challenges and recent improvements for reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), electrodialysis (ED), and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI). RO is the dominant membrane process for large-scale desalination of brackish water with higher salinity, while ED and MCDI are energy-efficient for lower salinity ranges. Selective removal of multivalent components makes NF an excellent option for water softening. Brackish water desalination with membrane processes faces a series of challenges. Membrane fouling and scaling are the common issues associated with these processes, resulting in a reduction in their water recovery and energy efficiency. To overcome such adverse effects, many efforts have been dedicated toward development of pre-treatment steps, surface modification of membranes, use of anti-scalant, and modification of operational conditions. However, the effectiveness of these approaches depends on the fouling propensity of the feed water. In addition to the fouling and scaling, each process may face other challenges depending on their state of development and maturity. This review provides recent advances in the material, architecture, and operation of these processes that can assist in the selection and design of technologies for particular applications. The active research directions to improve the performance of these processes are also identified. The review shows that technologies that are tunable and particularly efficient for partial desalination such as ED and MCDI are increasingly competitive with traditional RO processes. Development of cost-effective ion exchange membranes with high chemical and mechanical stability can further improve the economy of desalination with electro-membrane processes and advance their future applications.

Mathematical Modeling of the Effect of Pulsed Electric Field on the Specific Permselectivity of Ion-Exchange Membranes

The application of pulsed electric field (PEF) in electrodialysis has been proven to be efficient for a number of effects: increasing mass transfer rate, mitigation of scaling and fouling, reducing water splitting. Recently, the improvement of the membrane permselectivity for specific counterions was discovered experimentally by the group of Laurent Bazinet (N. Lemay et al. J. Memb. Sci. 604, 117878 (2020)). To better understanding the effect of PEF in electrodialysis, simulations were performed using a non-stationary mathematical model based on the Nernst–Planck and Poisson equations. For the first time, it was not only the condition used when the current density is specified but also the condition when the voltage is set. A membrane and two adjacent diffusion layers are considered. It is shown that when applying the regime used by Lemay et al. (the same current density in conventional continuous current (CC) mode and during the pulses in PEF mode), there is a significant gain in specific permselectivity. It is explained by a reduction in the membrane concentration polarization in PEF mode. In the CC mode of electrodialysis, increasing current density leads to a loss in specific permselectivity: concentration profiles in the diffusion layers and membrane are formed in such a way that ion diffusion reduces the migration flux of the preferentially transferred ion and increases that of the poorly transferred ion. In PEF mode, the concentration profiles are partially restored during the pauses when the current is zero. However, if a different condition is used than the condition applied by Lemay et al., that is, when the same average current density is applied in both the PEF and CC modes, there is no gain in specific permeability. It is shown that within the framework of the applied mathematical model, the specific selectivity depends only on the average current density and does not depend on the mode of its application (CC or PEF mode).

Trade-Off between Operating Time and Energy Consumption in Pulsed Electric Field Electrodialysis: A Comprehensive Simulation Study

Electrodialysis (ED) has been recently introduced in a variety of processes where the recovery of valuable resources is needed; thus, enabling sustainable production routes for a circular economy. However, new applications of ED require optimized operating modes ensuring low energy consumptions. The application of pulsed electric field (PEF) electrodialysis has been demonstrated to be an effective option to modulate concentration polarization and reduce energy consumption in ED systems, but the savings in energy are usually attained by extending the operating time. In the present work, we conduct a comprehensive simulation study about the effects of PEF signal parameters on the time and energy consumption associated with ED processes. Ion transport of NaCl solutions through homogeneous cation-exchange membranes is simulated using a 1-D model solved by a finite-difference method. Increasing the pulse frequency up to a threshold value is effective in reducing the specific energy consumption, with threshold frequencies increasing with the applied current density. Varying the duty cycle causes opposed effects in the time and energy usage needed for a given ED operation. More interestingly, a new mode of PEF functions with the application of low values of current during the relaxation phases has been investigated. This novel PEF strategy has been demonstrated to simultaneously improve the time and the specific energy consumption of ED processes.

Electrodialytic Processes: Market Overview, Membrane Phenomena, Recent Developments and Sustainable Strategies

In the context of preserving and improving human health, electrodialytic processes are very promising perspectives. Indeed, they allow the treatment of water, preservation of food products, production of bioactive compounds, extraction of organic acids, and recovery of energy from natural and wastewaters without major environmental impact. Hence, the aim of the present review is to give a global portrait of the most recent developments in electrodialytic membrane phenomena and their uses in sustainable strategies. It has appeared that new knowledge on pulsed electric fields, electroconvective vortices, overlimiting conditions and reversal modes as well as recent demonstrations of their applications are currently boosting the interest for electrodialytic processes. However, the hurdles are still high when dealing with scale-ups and real-life conditions. Furthermore, looking at the recent research trends, potable water and wastewater treatment as well as the production of value-added bioactive products in a circular economy will probably be the main applications to be developed and improved. All these processes, taking into account their principles and specificities, can be used for specific eco-efficient applications. However, to prove the sustainability of such process strategies, more life cycle assessments will be necessary to convince people of the merits of coupling these technologies.

The Development of Electroconvection at the Surface of a Heterogeneous Cation-Exchange Membrane Modified with Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer Film Containing Titanium Oxide

One way to enhance mass transfer and reduce fouling in wastewater electrodialysis is stimulation of electroconvective mixing of the solution adjoining membranes by modifying their surfaces. Several samples were prepared by casting the perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymer film doped with TiO₂ nanoparticles onto the surface of the heterogeneous cation-exchange membrane MK-40. It is found that changes in surface characteristics conditioned by such modification lead to an increase in the limiting current density due to the stimulation of electroconvection, which develops according to the mechanism of electroosmosis of the first kind. The greatest increase in the current compared to the pristine membrane can be obtained by modification with the film being 20 μm thick and containing 3 wt% of TiO₂. The sample containing 6 wt% of TiO₂ provides higher mass transfer in overlimiting current modes due to the development of nonequilibrium electroconvection. A 1.5-fold increase in the thickness of the modifying film reduces the positive effect of introducing TiO₂ nanoparticles due to (1) partial shielding of the nanoparticles on the surface of the modified membrane; (2) a decrease in the tangential component of the electric force, which affects the development of electroconvection.

Effect of Surface Inhomogeneity of Ion-Exchange Membranes on the Mass Transfer Efficiency in Pulsed Electric Field Modes

Despite the growing interest in pulsed electric field modes in membrane separation processes, there are currently not many works devoted to studying the effect of the surface properties and composition of ion-exchange membranes on their efficiency in these modes. In this paper, we have shown the effect of increasing mass transfer using different kinds of ion-exchange membranes (heterogeneous and homogeneous with smooth, undulated, and rough surfaces) during electrodialysis in the pulsed electric field modes at underlimiting and overlimiting currents. It was found that the maximum increment in the average current is achieved when the average potential corresponds to the right-hand edge of the limiting current plateau of the voltammetric curve, i.e., at the maximum resistance of the system in the DC mode. For the first time, the development of electroconvective vortices was visualized in pulsed electric field modes and it was experimentally shown that even at relatively low frequencies, a non-uniform concentration field is preserved at the time of a pause, which stimulates the rapid development of electroconvection when pulses are switched on again. In the case of relatively high pulse frequencies, the electroconvective vortices formed during a pulse lapse do not completely decay during a pause; they only slightly decrease in size.

An Investigation on the Application of Pulsed Electrodialysis Reversal in Whey Desalination

Electrodialysis (ED) is frequently used in the desalination of whey. However, the fouling onto the membrane surface decreases the electrodialysis efficiency. Pulsed Electrodialysis Reversal (PER), in which short pulses of reverse polarity are applied, is expected to decrease the fouling onto membrane surface during ED. Three (PER) regimes were applied in the desalination of acid whey (pH ≤ 5) to study their effects on the membrane fouling and the ED efficiency. The PER regimes were compared to the conventional ED as the control. For each regime, two consecutive runs were performed without any cleaning step in-between to intensify the fouling. After the second run, the membranes were subjected to the Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and contact angle measurement to investigate the fouling on the membrane surface in different regimes. The ED parameters in the case of conventional ED were almost the same in the first and the second runs. However, the parameters related to the ED efficiency including ED capacity, ash transfer, and ED time, were deteriorated when the PER regimes were applied. The contact angle values indicated that the fouling on the diluate side of anion exchange membranes was more intensified in conventional ED compared to the PER regimes. The SEM images also showed that the fouling on the diluate side of both cation and anion exchange membranes under PER regimes was reduced in respect to the conventional ED. However, the back transfer to the diluate compartment when the reverse pulse was applied is dominant and lowers the ED efficiency slightly when the PER is applied.

Competition between diffusion and electroconvection at an ion-selective surface in intensive current regimes

Considering diffusion near a solid surface and simplifying the shape of concentration profile in diffusion-dominated layer allowed Nernst and Brunner to propose their famous equation for calculating the solute diffusion flux. Intensive (overlimiting) currents generate electroconvection (EC), which is a recently discovered interfacial phenomenon produced by the action of an external electric field on the electric space charge formed near an ion-selective interface. EC microscale vortices effectively mix the depleted solution layer that allows the reduction of diffusion transport limitations. Enhancement of ion transport by EC is important in membrane separation, nano-microfluidics, analytical chemistry, electrode kinetics and some other fields. This paper presents a review of the actual understanding of the transport mechanisms in intensive current regimes, where the role of diffusion declines in the profit of EC. We analyse recent publications devoted to explore the properties of different zones of the diffusion layer. Visualization of concentration profile and fluid current lines are considered as well as mathematical modelling of the overlimiting transfer.
