Sensing and structure analysis byin situIR spectroscopy: from mL flow cells to microfluidic applications

In situmid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy in liquids is an emerging field for the analysis of functional surfaces and chemical reactions. Different basic geometries exist forin situMIR spectroscopy in milliliter (mL) and microfluidic flow cells, such as attenuated total reflection (ATR), simple reflection, transmission and fiber waveguides. After a general introduction of linear opticalin situMIR techniques, the methodology of ATR, ellipsometric and microfluidic applications in single-reflection geometries is presented. Selected examples focusing on thin layers relevant to optical, electronical, polymer, biomedical, sensing and silicon technology are discussed. The development of an optofluidic platform translates IR spectroscopy to the world of micro- and nanofluidics. With the implementation of SEIRA (surface enhanced infrared absorption) interfaces, the sensitivity of optofluidic analyses of biomolecules can be improved significantly. A large variety of enhancement surfaces ranging from tailored nanostructures to metal-island film substrates are promising for this purpose. Meanwhile, time-resolved studies, such as sub-monolayer formation of organic molecules in nL volumes, become available in microscopic or laser-based set-ups. With the adaption of modern brilliant IR sources, such as tunable and broadband IR lasers as well as frequency comb sources, possible applications of far-field IR spectroscopy inin situsensing with high lateral (sub-mm) and time (sub-s) resolution are considerably extended.

Modification of a H-terminated silicon surface by organic sulfide molecules: the mechanism and origin of reactivity

For the reactions of disulfide molecules (RSSR), the steric effect rather than the electronic effect of the R group is the main origin of the different reactivity. In the reactions of sulfide molecules (RSXR′, X = S, P, Si, O, N, C), charges on the S atom and dissociation energies of the S–X bonds have a great impact on the reactivity of these reactions.

Thermal Stability of Organic Monolayers Grafted to Si(111): Insights from ReaxFF Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulations

We used the ReaxFF reactive molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the chemical mechanisms and kinetics of thermal decomposition processes of silicon surfaces grafted with different organic molecules via Si-C bonds at atomistic level. In this work, we considered the Si(111) surface grafted with n-alkyl (ethyl, propyl, pentyl, and decyl) layers in 50% coverage and, Si-CH₃, Si-CCCH₃ and Si-CHCHCH₃ layers in full coverage. Si radicals primarily formed by the homolytic cleavage of Si-C bonds play a key role in the dehydrogenation processes that lead to the decomposition of the monolayers. Contrary to commonly proposed mechanisms that only involve a single Si atom center, we found that the main decomposition pathways require two Si lattice atoms to proceed. The ability of surface silyl radicals to dehydrogenate the organic molecules depends on the flexibility of the carbon backbones of the organic molecules as well as on the C-H bond strength. The dehydrogenation of n-alkyl chains mainly involves the H atoms of the β-carbon (leading to 1-alkene desorption). However, as the surface coverage decreases, the flexibility of the alkyl chains allows for the dehydrogenation of any methylene group and even the terminal methyl group of the long decyl layer. On the contrary, the rigid carbon backbone of the Si-CCCH₃ and Si-CHCHCH₃ moieties hinders the dehydrogenation of the terminal methyl group, which confers these layers a higher thermal stability. For all layers, the surface ends up mostly hydrogenated as Si-C bonds break and new Si-H bonds are formed during the dehydrogenation reactions.

Molecular Interactions and Hydration States of Ultrathin Functional Films at the Solid-Liquid Interface

We significantly improve the infrared analysis of ultrathin films in aqueous environments by employing in situ infrared ellipsometry. Combining it with rigorous optical modeling avoids otherwise typical misinterpretations of spectral features and enables the simultaneous quantification of chemical composition, hydration states, structure, and molecular interactions. We apply this approach to study covalently end-grafted, nanometer-thin brushes of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), a thermoresponsive model polymer for proteins at solid-liquid interfaces. Quantitative analyses are based on a dielectric layer model that accounts for film swelling and deswelling, hydration of hydrophilic amide and hydrophobic isopropyl side groups, as well as molecular interactions of the polymer's amide moieties. We thereby quantify the hydration and structure dependence of intra- and intermolecular C═O···H-N and C═O···H₂O hydrogen bonds, elucidating their role in the brush's temperature-induced phase separation. The presented method is directly applicable to functional and biorelated films like polymer and polypeptide layers, which is of topical interest for interface studies, such as membrane processes and protein unfolding.

Expanding the Repertoire of Molecular Linkages to Silicon: Si-S, Si-Se, and Si-Te Bonds

Silicon is the foundation of the electronics industry and is now the basis for a myriad of new hybrid electronics applications, including sensing, silicon nanoparticle-based imaging and light emission, photonics, and applications in solar fuels, among others. From interfacing of biological materials to molecular electronics, the nature of the chemical bond plays important roles in electrical transport and can have profound effects on the electronics of the underlying silicon itself, affecting its work function, among other things. This work describes the chemistry to produce ≡Si-E bonds (E = S, Se, and Te) through very fast microwave heating (10-15 s) and direct thermal heating (hot plate, 2 min) through the reaction of hydrogen-terminated silicon surfaces with dialkyl or diaryl dichalcogenides. The chemistry produces surface-bound ≡Si-SR, ≡Si-SeR, and ≡Si-TeR groups. Although the interfacing of molecules through ≡Si-SR and ≡Si-SeR bonds is known, to the best of our knowledge, the heavier chalcogenide variant, ≡Si-TeR, has not been described previously. The identity of the surface groups was determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and depth profiling with time-of-flight-secondary ionization mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Possible mechanisms are outlined, and the most likely, based upon parallels with well-established molecular literature, involve surface silyl radicals or dangling bonds that react with either the alkyl or aryl dichalcogenide directly, REER, or its homolysis product, the alkyl or aryl chalcogenyl radical, RE· (where E = S, Se, and Te).
