Abstract
BACKGROUND Although NSAIDs possess notable therapeutic and pharmaceutical qualities, it's essential to acknowledge that excessive doses can result in toxicity within the human body. Moreover, the importance lies in identifying and measuring their trace amounts. Due to their existence within intricate matrices, the creation of novel electrospun nanofibers as sorbents for electrically-assisted solidphase microextraction (EA-SPME) becomes vital. This innovation caters to the requirement for the effective pre-treatment of NSAID samples, providing a strategic approach to managing the complexities associated with trace quantities found in various matrices. RESULTS First, polyvinylalcohol/casein/tannic acid/polyaniline/titanium dioxide nanoparticles (PVA/CAS/TA/PANI/TiO2 NPs) electrospun nanofibers were prepared for EA-SPME on pewter rode and then, trace amounts of six NSAIDs (Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Naproxen, Celecoxib, Ibuprofen and mefenamic acid) were adsorbed chemically on these nanofibers. In the next step, the desorption of six NSAIDs was electrochemically done from prepared electrospun nanofibers on a pewter rod which was as working electrode at three electrodes system. Finally, these drugs were quantified from different human plasma samples with HPLC-UV. The synthesis of electrospun nanofibers was confirmed through a series of analytical techniques including field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with elemental mapping analysis (EDX-Mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR). The optimal percentage of additive compounds to PVA/CAS for electrospinning, as well as the factors influencing adsorption and desorption processes, were determined through both of Design Expert software and MATLAB programming language. SIGNIFICANCE Under optimum conditions, the wide linear range was 27-8000 ng mL-1 with R2≥ 0.9897, low detection limits were ranged from 8 to 27.3 ng mL-1 based on S/N = 3 and significant enrichment factors were acquired. The intra-day and inter-day RSDs% were obtained within the 4.51% - 5.68% and 4.28%-5.45%, respectively. Finally, The effectiveness of the EA-SPME-HPLC-UV method was assessed for determining NSAIDs in plasma samples, demonstrating good recoveries ranging from 90.2% to 105.2%.

Abstract
Critical minerals are essential for the ever-increasing urban and industrial activities in modern society. The shift to cost-efficient and ecofriendly urban mining can be an avenue to replace the traditional linear flow of virgin-mined materials. Electrochemical separation technologies provide a sustainable approach to metal recovery, through possible integration with renewable energy, the minimization of external chemical input, as well as reducing secondary pollution. In this review, recent advances in electrochemically mediated technologies for metal recovery are discussed, with a focus on rare earth elements and other key critical materials for the modern circular economy. Given the extreme heterogeneity of hydrometallurgically-derived media of complex feedstocks, we focus on the nature of molecular selectivity in various electrochemically assisted recovery techniques. Finally, we provide a perspective on the challenges and opportunities for process intensification in critical materials recycling, especially through combining electrochemical and hydrometallurgical separation steps.

Abstract
Electric field-accelerated ion-permselective membrane (EISM) separation has attracted significant attention in recent years. Thus, herein, to further investigate the ion transport mechanism and optimize the separation efficiency, five types of ion-permselective membrane modules (IPMM I–V) based on the electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) scheme were designed. Compared with the traditional ion separation systems, the in situ membrane-based ion separation system was set up with an extra pulse potential applied to the PPy/PSS/SSWM (polypyrrole/polystyrenesulfonate/stainless steel wire mesh) membrane. The continuous permselective separation of K+ as target ions was performed from dilute aqueous solution through the IPMM system. The pulse potential combined with the regulated cell voltage was functionalized synergistically to create an “ion-sieving effect” and effectively guide the target cations from the source cell to the receiving cell. Moreover, the formation of an equal potential volume in IPMM-V suppressed the reverse migration of the target ions and the detected ion flux across the membrane was 100 times that of the IPMM-I system. The ion transport mechanism was also analyzed in detail based on the equivalent circuit of the system, and the optimized operation parameters were obtained for the high-efficient ion separation system. These results can provide some beneficial information for the design and practical operation of novel EISM systems. Novel ion permselective membrane modules based on the ESIX scheme.![]()

Abstract
A radiotracer study was conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of cadmium (109Cd) from aqueous solution by polypyrrole/ sawdust composite. Several factors such as solution pH, sorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time, temperature and interfering metal ions were found to have influence on the adsorption process. The kinetics of adsorption was relatively fast, reaching equilibrium within 3 hours. A lowering of the solution pH reduced the removal efficiency from 99.3 to ~ 46.7% and an ambient temperature of 25°C was found to be optimum for maximum adsorption. The presence of sodium and potassium ions inhibited 109Cd removal from its aqueous solution. The experimental data for 109Cd adsorption showed a very good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm and a pseudo-first order kinetic model. The surface condition of the adsorbent before and after cadmium loading was investigated using BET, FESEM and FTIR. Considering the low cost of the precursor's materials and the toxicity of 109Cd radioactive metal, polypyrrole synthesized on the sawdust of Dryobalanops aromatic could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of 109Cd radioisotope from radionuclide-containing effluents.

Abstract
A series of experiments were performed to evaluate the continuous separation of cesium based on an electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) process using a diaphragm-isolated reactor with two identical nickel hexacyanoferrate/porous three-dimensional carbon felt (NiHCF/PTCF) electrodes as working electrodes. The effects of applied potential, initial concentrations and pH values of the simulation solutions on the adsorption of cesium ion were investigated. The adsorption rate of cesium ion in the ESIX process was fitted by a pseudo-first-order reaction model. The experiments revealed that the introduction of applied potential on the electrodes greatly enhanced the adsorption/desorption rate of Cs(+) and increased the separation efficiency. H(3)O(+) was found to play a dual role of electrolyte and competitor, and the adsorption rate constant showed a curve diversification with an increase in pH value. Also, it was found that the electrochemically switched adsorption process of Cs(+) by NiHCF/PTCF electrodes proceeded in two main steps, i.e., an ESIX step with a fast adsorption rate and an ion diffusion step with a slow diffusion rate. Meanwhile, the NiHCF/PTCF film electrode showed adsorption selectivity for Cs(+) in preference to Na(+).

Abstract
An energy efficient method of concurrent hydrogen gas and struvite (MgNH(4)PO(4)·6H(2)O) production was investigated based on bioelectrochemically driven struvite crystallization at the cathode of a single chamber microbial electrolysis struvite-precipitation cell (MESC). The MESC cathodes were either stainless steel 304 mesh or flat plates. Phosphate removal ranged from 20% to 40%, with higher removals obtained using mesh cathodes than with flat plates. Cathode accumulated crystals were verified as struvite using a scanning electron microscope capable of energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Crystal accumulation did not affect the rate of hydrogen production in struvite reactors. The rate of struvite crystallization (g/m(2)-h) and hydrogen production (m(3)/m(3)-d) were shown to be dependent on applied voltage and cathode material. Overall energy efficiencies (substrate and electricity) were high (73 ± 4%) and not dependent on applied voltage. These results show that MESCs may be useful both as a method for hydrogen gas and struvite production.

Abstract
A polyaniline (PANI) modified electrode reactor was designed for fluoride removal from aqueous solutions. The innovative concept behind the reactor design is that the uptake and elute of fluoride could be well controlled by modulating the potential of the PANI film. The maximum fluoride removal capacity of PANI is more than 20 mg/g at a positive voltage based on the electrically controlled anion-exchange mechanism. The results of batch tests showed that terminal potential values had a major impact on fluoride removal by this PANI, with optimal removal occurring at 1.5 V. The fluoride removal capacity (q(e)) increased rapidly within 5 min and reached equilibrium within 10 min, which indicated a rapid removal velocity of fluoride by PANI under this condition. The applicability of defluoridation using the PANI reactor to treat fluoride-contaminated tap water was also tested through flow cell breakthrough studies. At initial fluoride concentrations of 5 mg/L and 10 mg/L, the breakthrough capacities were 20.08 mg/g and 19.24 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, during the first half of the period before the breakthrough point, the fluoride concentration of the treated solution was below the WHO's recommended levels (1.5 mg/L). The results of the five consecutive treatment-regeneration studies also showed that the PANI films could be reused. Taken together, these results implied that the electrically controlled anion exchange by the PANI-modified electrode reactor may be an effective technique for the removal of fluoride from water.
