Abstract
In this work, the supersensitive and selective determination of lincomycin (Lin) was achieved using a novel electroluminescent (ECL) aptasensor based on the synergistic integration of gold functionalized upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and thiolated 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA). The integration of two luminophores of UCNPs and PTCA combined the merits of the cathodoluminescence stability of UCNPs and the high quantum yield of PTCA, which significantly promoted the ECL signal and analytical performance of the proposed sensor. The introduction of gold nanoparticles in UCNPs can not only improve the conductivity and ECL performance of UCNPs but also cause them to easily integrate with thiolated PTCA (t-PTCA) via an Au-S bond. The ECL signal of UCNPs@Au/t-PTCA/GCE was almost twice as strong as that of t-PTCA/GCE and tenfold higher than that of UCNPs@Au/GCE. Because of the non-conductive protein of the Lin aptamer, the ECL intensity of apt/UCNPs@Au/t-PTCA/GCE noticeably decreased. In the presence of Lin, the aptamer was pulled down from the sensing interface, resulting in the recovery of the ECL intensity of the sensor. Under optimal conditions, our proposed sensor can quantify the concentration of Lin in the range from 1.0 × 10-15 to 1.0 × 10-7 M with a low detection limit of 2.4 × 10-16 M (S/N = 3), exhibiting high sensitivity and specificity for the determination of Lin.

Abstract
Amyloid-β oligomers (AβOs) was the core-biomarker of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the detection of AβOs is very important for the early diagnosis of AD. However, existing tests for AβOs are majorly suffering from complex process and poor sensitivity. Thus, an adjustable AβOs electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor based on the synergistic effect of self-enhanced metal-organic gel (AgCNS) and triple-helix DNA system (THS) was successfully constructed. AgCNS was prepared by an extremely simple one-pot method and was an innovative luminophore with excellent ECL performance. The AgCNS-labeled complementary sequence (AgCNS@CP) was interlaced with the unlabeled aptamer (Apt) carrying two short-arms fixed on the gold electrode (GE) to form the THS. Along with the specific-binding of AβOs and Apt, the THS was disrupted and adjusted flexibly between "on" and "off", resulting in significant changes in the ECL signals. Thus, ECL detection of AβOs was sensitively achieved with a detection limit as low as 0.23 fM and the different forms of Aβ can be specifically distinguished. The aptasensor also exhibited satisfactory selectivity, stability and reproducibility. Moreover, when proposed method and ELISA-kit were simultaneously applied to artificial cerebrospinal fluid (A-CSF) samples, the obtained results were completely consistent, reflecting the potential clinical application value of this work.

Abstract
At present, the development of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor with excellent performance is still the research focus of immunoassay and detection. Herein, SnS2 quantum dots (SnS2 QDs) and metal-organic framework (MIL-101 (Cr)) are effectively combined to achieve synergistic signal amplification based on K2S2O8 co-reactant, thereby constructing SnS2 QDs/SO4•- and SO4•-/O2 ECL double reaction luminous systems. SnS2 QDs and singlet oxygen (1(O2)2*) produced from the system as light-emitting devices jointly enhance the ECL response and significantly improve the sensitivity of the ECL immunosensor. Dissolved oxygen and SnS2 QDs respectively generate HOO• and SnS2 QDs•- under negative potential, and react with transient SO4•- to emit strong light respectively, so as to jointly enhance the ECL response. MIL-101 catalyzes the oxygen cathode reduction reaction to promote the conversion of dissolved oxygen into HOO•, which greatly improves the ECL response of 1(O2)2*. CuS with spherical nanoflower-like form as a co-reaction promoter of K2S2O8 generate more SO4•- active substances, which further enhance the ECL response of the immunosensor. The constructed ECL immunosensor has the advantages of low detection limit, high sensitivity and better stability. Under the optimal conditions, the detection range is 0.1 mU/mL∼100 U/mL, and the detection limit is 0.015 mU/mL. The results show that the constructed ECL immunosensor can detect human CA242 samples and have a broad application prospect in biological analysis and early diagnosis of diseases.

Abstract
A catalyst-free co-reaction luminol-H2O2-K2S2O8 chemiluminescence (CL) system was developed, with long-life and high-intensity emission, and CL emission lasting for 6 h. A possible mechanism of persistent and intense emission in this CL system was discussed in the context of CL spectra, cyclic voltammetry, electron spin resonance (ESR), and the effects of radical scavengers on luminol-H2O2-K2S2O8 system. H2O2 and K2S2O8 co-reactants can promote each other to continuously generate corresponding radicals (OH•, 1O2, O2•-, SO4•-) that trigger the CL emission of luminol. H2O2 can also be constantly produced by the reaction of K2S2O8 and H2O to further extend the persistence of this CL system. CL emission can be quenched via ascorbic acid (AA), which can be generated through hydrolysis reaction of L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Next, a CL-based method was established for the detection of ALP with good linearity from 0.08 to 5 U·L-1 and a limit of detection of 0.049 U·L-1. The proposed method was used to detect ALP in human serum samples.

Abstract
This work designed a signal amplification strategy for construction of a highly sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor by doping Cu2+ in a terbium luminescent metal organic framework (Cu:Tb-MOF) to act as a co-reaction promoter, which enhanced the generation of SO4•- radical during the cathodic process in the presence of K2S2O8 as a co-reactant. The porous and hollow morphology and the size of Cu:Tb-MOF could be efficiently tuned via changing the molar ratio of Cu2+ and Tb3+ and the reaction time, which were related to the specific surface area, pore diameter, and the ECL intensity of the MOF structure. To further improve the sensitivity of the ECL biosensor, H2O2 was introduced into the ECL system to act as another co-reaction promoter, leading to a new ECL mechanism involving dual co-reaction promoters. In view of the low electron transfer resistance of Cu:Tb-MOF, a label-free ECL immunosensor was conveniently constructed by co-immobilizing Cu:Tb-MOF and the capture antibody on the electrode surface. Using pro-gastrin-releasing peptide (ProGRP, a biomarker of small-cell lung cancer) as the model target, the proposed immunosensor exhibited excellent performance with a detection range of 1.0 pg·mL-1 to 50 ng·mL-1 and a limit of detection down to 0.68 pg·mL-1 (3σ). This work demonstrated a strategy to use the MOF structures as both an emitter and a co-reaction promoter for amplified ECL emission and proposed an innovative route to extend the application of lanthanide MOFs.

Abstract
Despite the upsurging interest in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of lanthanides, the research in this field is still in its infancy due to the low intensity. In this work, a series of Ce3+-doped terbium orthophosphates (TbPO4:Ce) in different proportions have been synthesized through the co-precipitation method at room temperature. Meanwhile, through the investigation of morphologies and ECL properties of these TbPO4:Ce, it is concluded that the ECL intensity reaches the maximum when the molar ratio of Tb/Ce is 9:1 and the material is nanorod-shaped. The ECL intensity of TbPO4:Ce is significantly improved by doping with Ce3+ due to the dual sensitization strategy of the antenna effect from PO43- to Tb3+ and the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+. Interestingly, doping with Ce3+ can not only adjust morphology of TbPO4:Ce but also improve the ECL intensity. In addition, to verify the application of TbPO4:Ce, two single mucin1 (MUC1) aptamers are linked together to form a dual MUC1 aptamer chain. Then, a simple and sensitive ECL biosensor is constructed for the detection of MUC1, which can recognize the double amount of MUC1 and quench the ECL signal. As expected, the proposed biosensor shows good stability and acceptable selectivity and achieves sensitive detection of MUC1 with a dynamic range from 1 fg·mL-1 to 10 ng·mL-1 and a limit of detection of 0.5 fg·mL-1. This work may pave a new avenue for the study of direct ECL emission of lanthanides and prove to be ideal for the research of new ECL luminophores in electrochemical analysis.

Abstract
It is an advantageous way to quickly identify the toxicity of Bacillus anthracis (B. anthracis) by detecting the transcription product of the atxA gene. Herein, a novel ultrasensitive ratiometric electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor with competitive mechanism and double amplified signal ways was proposed for detecting the atxA mRNA. The K2S2O8 was used as cathodic emitter and silver metal-organic gels (AgMOG) was used as ECL enhancer. The AgMOG could accelerate the electro-catalytic reduction of S2O82- to SO4˙-, which reacted with dissolved oxygen, resulting in strong cathodic ECL. Meanwhile, luminol was encapsulated in liposome as anodic amplified signal labels and the luminol anion radical also reacted with dissolved oxygen to create the anodic ECL emission. We immobilized luminol-encapsulated liposomes on the surface of AgMOG through the hybridization of DNA and mRNA. This would provide a competitive mechanism involving dissolved oxygen between K2S2O8 and luminol. Benefiting from the competitive mechanism and amplified signal ways, this ratiometric biosensor achieved a wide linear relationship range from 10 to 300 fM with a low limit of detection (8.13 fM). Considering the accessible operation, favorable performance, and high universality of this strategy, this work may be used to analyze other mRNAs of bacteria.

An electrochemiluminescence sensor for 17β-estradiol detection based on resonance energy transfer in α-FeOOH@CdS/Ag NCs. Talanta 2021; 221:121479. Abstract
An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) resonance energy transfer system is constructed for 17β-estradiol (E2) detection using α-FeOOH@CdS nanospheres as the ECL-active substrates and Ag NCs as an efficient quencher. CdS QDs loaded onto three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like α-FeOOH nanospheres (α-FeOOH@CdS nanospheres) exhibited excellent ECL responses, which is attributed to dual-amplification of α-FeOOH frameworks. The 3D hierarchical structure of the α-FeOOH nanospheres provided abundant sites for loading ECL-active species, thus significantly improving the ECL performance of substrates; While Fe3+ presented on surface of α-FeOOH nanospheres could be reduced to Fe2+ in negative potentials, after which might activate persulfate in a Fenton-like process, resulting in more sulfate free radicals for more effective ECL responses via electron transfer reactions. Additionally, Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) stabilized by single stranded oligonucleotide were introduced as quenching probes for CdS QDs owing to the well-matched donor-acceptor spectrum for efficient energy transfer, which makes them appropriate for detection of E2. The proposed strategy displayed a desirable dynamic range from 0.01 to 10 pg mL-1 with a limit of detection of 0.003 pg mL-1. The proposed strategy based on the ECL-RET strategy offered an ideal way for E2 detection, and also revealed an alternative platform for detection of other small molecules.

Abstract
A solid-state electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for the detection of reduced glutathione (GSH) based on a g-C3N4/SiO2 modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) has been developed in this research. The g-C3N4, which is employed as a luminophore, is simply prepared and exhibits an excellent ECL response. Mesoporous silica hollow spheres (SiO2) with a large specific surface area are introduced here to increase the loading amount of g-C3N4. Compared to a g-C3N4 modified GCE, the g-C3N4/SiO2 modified GCE displays a much higher ECL intensity. A high enhancement effect on the ECL intensity of g-C3N4/SiO2 modified GCE is obtained in the presence of GSH in the electrolyte. Moreover, the enhanced ECL intensity shows a good linear relationship to the GSH concentration in the range from 1.0 × 10-7 to 5.0 × 10-4 M, with a detection limit of 2.0 × 10-8 M (6.1 ng/mL). Besides, the ECL sensor exhibits a good anti-interference ability and has been successfully applied in the detection of GSH in commercial samples. The proposed sensor provides a promising platform for life science.

Abstract
In this work, the electrochemiluminscence system of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and K2S2O8 was built for the determination of crystal violet (CV). Meanwhile, a carboxylic carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (CCNTs/GCE) was used as an ECL sensor. Thanks to the excellent electron transfer ability and large surface area of CCNTs, the ECL signal of N-GQDs@S2O82- was remarkablely amplified. With the presence of a low concentration of CV, a distinct decrease of the ECL signal was observed due to a quenching effect of CV on the ECL emission. Moreover, the quenched ECL intensity responded linearly to the logarithm of CV concentration within the range of 0.05 - 5 μmol/L, with a LOD of 45 nmol/L (S/N = 3). The proposed ECL system exhibited high sensitivity and specificity to CV, which was successfully applied in the practical detection of CV in real water samples from a local fishpond farm.

Abstract
Aptamers are single stranded DNA or RNA ligands which can be selected for different targets from proteins to small organic dyes. In the past few years great progress has been accomplished in the development of aptamer based bioanalytical assays with different detection techniques. Among them, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensors are very promising because they have the advantages of both electrochemical and chemiluminescence biosensors, such as high sensitivity, low background, cost effectiveness, and ease of control. In this review, we summarize the recent efforts to construct novel and improved ECL aptasensors and their application.

Abstract
Peroxydisulfate-oxygen (S2O82--O2) system has become one of the most used systems in electrogenerated chemiluminscence (ECL) field. Due to S2O82- can be used as Fenton Reagent, this work designed an ECL biosensor based on the S2O82--O2 system for the detection of L-alanine in a widened emission window and using hemin/G-quadruplex and platinum and palladium nanowires (Pt-Pd NWs) to in situ generate O2 to amplify the ECL intensity. The proposed ECL sensor showed an excellent analytical property for the detection of L-alanine in a linear range of 5.0 × 10-3 M to 1.0 × 10-8 M with the detection limit of 3.3 × 10-9 M (S/N = 3). This work with high selectivity, stability and reproducibility may open a new door to apply S2O82- in ECL field.

Abstract
In this work, hemin was firstly used as electrochemically regenerable co-reaction accelerator for signal amplification to develop an ultrasensitive aptasensor for Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) detection. Initially, the perylenetetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) was directly employed as luminophore to construct the ECL sensing nano-platform by combining Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) for immobilizing thiol-terminated hairpin probe (H1). Then with the help of hairpin H2, H3, the AFM1-catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) was executed to produce the H1-H3 duplex, which could further initiate the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) to generate dendritic DNA polymers consisting of G-rich sequence for capturing large quantities of hemin on the electrode surface. Herein, hemin as electrochemically regenerable co-reaction accelerator could interact with the co-reactant (S2O82-) to obviously improve the luminous efficiency of the PTCA. Therefore, a strong and stable ECL signal was achieved by the employment of hemin as electrochemically regenerable co-reaction accelerator. The proposed aptasensor determined AFM1 down to 0.09pgmL-1 within a linear range of 0.4pgmL-1 to 400ngmL-1. With excellent sensitivity and stability, the strategy provided an efficient and simple method for the trace detection of biomolecules in clinical analysis.

Abstract
A highly sensitive electrochemiluminescent (ECL) aptasensor was constructed using semicarbazide (Sem) as co-reaction accelerator to promote the ECL reaction rate of CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) and the co-reactant of peroxydisulfate (S2O8(2-)) for boosting signal amplification. The co-reaction accelerator is a species that when it is introduced into the ECL system containing luminophore and co-reactant, it can interact with co-reactant rather than luminophore to promote the ECL reaction rate of luminophore and co-reactant; thus the ECL signal is significantly amplified in comparison with that in which only luminophore and co-reactant are present. In this work, the ECL signal probes were first fabricated by alternately assembling the Sem and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto the surfaces of hollow Au nanocages (AuNCs) via Au-N bond to obtain the multilayered nanomaterials of (AuNPs-Sem)n-AuNCs for immobilizing amino-terminated detection aptamer of thrombin (TBA2). Notably, the Sem with two -NH2 terminal groups could not only serve as cross-linking reagent to assemble AuNPs and AuNCs but also act as co-reaction accelerator to enhance the ECL reaction rate of CdTe QDs and S2O8(2-) for signal amplification. With the sandwich-type format, TBA2 signal probes could be trapped on the CdTe QD-based sensing interface in the presence of thrombin (TB) to achieve a considerably enhanced ECL signal in S2O8(2-) solution. As a result, the Sem in the TBA2 signal probes could accelerate the reduction of S2O8(2-) to produce the more oxidant mediators of SO4(•-), which further boosted the production of excited states of CdTe QDs to emit light. With the employment of the novel co-reaction accelerator Sem, the proposed ECL biosensor exhibited ultrahigh sensitivity to quantify the concentration of TB from 1 × 10(-7) to 1 nM with a detection limit of 0.03 fM, which demonstrated that the co-reaction accelerator could provide a simple, efficient, and low-cost approach for signal amplification and hold great potential for other ECL biosensors construction.

Abstract
Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs), as a new class of quantum dots, have potential applications in fuel cells and optoelectronics fields due to their electrocatalytic activity, tunable luminescence and biocompatibility. Herein, a facile hydrothermal approach for cutting nitrogen-doped graphene into NGQDs has been proposed for the first time. The resulting NGQDs were homogeneously modified onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) to form NGQDs-GO nanocomposites. Compared with NGQDs, the as-prepared NGQDs-GO nanocomposites exhibited excellent electrochemiluminescence (ECL) performances including 3.8-fold enhancement of ECL intensity and a decrease by 200 mV of the ECL onset potential, which are ascribed to the introduction of GO. Based on the selective inhibitory effect of pentachlorophenol (PCP) on the ECL intensity of the NGQDs-GO system, a novel ECL sensor for PCP concentration determination was constructed, with a wide linear response ranging from 0.1 to 10 pg mL(-1) and a detection limit of 0.03 pg mL(-1). The practicability of the sensing platform in real water samples showed satisfactory results, which could open the possibility of using NGQDs-based nanocomposites in the electroanalytical field.

Abstract
In this paper, a novel electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) system from O2/S2O8(2-) to a kind of amino-terminated perylene derivative (PTC-NH2) was demonstrated for the first time, which was then applied to construct a ratiometric aptasensor for lead ion (Pb(2+)) detection. First, gold-nanoparticles-functionalized fullerene nanocomposites (AuNPs@nano-C60) were coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and then thiol-modified assistant probes (APs) were attached on AuNPs@nano-C60/GCE. Then the resultant electrode was hybridized with capture probes (the aptamer of the Pb(2+), abbreviated as CPs) to generate DNA duplexes, which could induce PTC-NH2 to be intercalated into the dsDNA grooves by the electrostatic adsorption. Herein, ECL dual peaks at -0.7 V (vs Ag/AgCl) and -2.0 V (vs Ag/AgCl) were obtained when the prepared aptasensor was detected in air-saturated S2O8(2-) solution, which could be attributed to the emission of excited dimmers (π-excimers) ((1)(NH2-PTC)2*) and (1)(O2)2*, respectively. In the presence of Pb(2+), the dsDNA was unwound, and Pb(2+) G-quadruplex structure was generated because of the highly specific affinity between Pb(2+) and CPs, which made the PTC-NH2 release from the electrode surface. As a result, the ECL signal at -0.7 V was decreased, and the ECL signal around -2.0 V was increased. By measuring the ratio of ECL intensities at two excitation potentials, the developed aptasensor exhibited the linear response range from 1.0 × 10(-12) M to 1.0 × 10(-7) M with a detection limit of 3.5 × 10(-13) M (S/N = 3) for Pb(2+), which could offer an alternative analytical method with excellent properties of high selectivity, accuracy, and sensitivity.
