Magnetic characterization techniques and micromagnetic simulations of magnetic nanostructures: from zero to three dimensions

The investigation of the magnetic characteristics of magnetic nanostructures (MNs) in various dimensions is a crucial direction of research in nanomagnetism, with MNs belonging to various dimensions exhibiting magnetic properties related to their geometry. A better understanding of these magnetic properties is required for MN manipulation. The primary tools for researching MNs are magnetic characterisation techniques with great spatial resolution and spin sensitivity. Micromagnetic simulation is another technique that minimises experimental costs, while providing information on the magnetic structure and magnetic behaviour, and has enormous potential for predicting, validating, and extending the magnetic characterisation results. This review first looks at the progress of research into quantitatively characterising the magnetic properties of low-dimensional (including 0D, 1D, and 2D) and 3D MNs in two directions: magnetic characterisation techniques and micromagnetic simulations, with a particular emphasis on the potential for future applications of these techniques. Single magnetic characterization techniques, single micromagnetic simulations, or a mix of both are utilised in these research studies to investigate MNs in a variety of dimensions. How the magnetic characterisation techniques and micromagnetic simulations can be better applied to MNs in various dimensions is then outlined. This discussion has significant application potential for low-dimensional and 3D MNs.

Unique magnetic properties and magnetization reversal process of CoFe2O4 nanotubes fabricated by electrospinning

CoFe(2)O(4) nanotubes have been directly fabricated by single-capillary spinneret electrospinning. The external diameter of the CoFe(2)O(4) nanotubes ranges from 60 nm to 160 nm. The morphology and structure characterizations show that individual CoFe(2)O(4) nanotubes are made of CoFe(2)O(4) nanocrystals stacking along the nanotubes with no preferred growth directions and these individual nanocrystals are single crystal with a cubic spinel structure. Each nanocrystal was shown to be a single magnetic domain. The magnetic measurements show that the coercivity (H(c)) of the CoFe(2)O(4) nanotubes decreases from 10 400 Oe at 5 K to 300 Oe at 360 K. The CoFe(2)O(4) nanotubes have a spin reorientation (SR) at 5 K, which is different from CoFe(2)O(4) nanorods and nanoparticles. Based on the observed morphology and crystal structure, a micromagnetic model, "chain-of-rings", is developed to interpret the magnetic behavior of the CoFe(2)O(4) nanotubes. The theoretical coercivity (534 Oe) is in good agreement with the experimental results (509 Oe). It is believed that our work should open a new route to prepare various magnetic ferrite nanotubes and is significant for expanding the application of CoFe(2)O(4) into the new fields.

Synthesis, magnetic anisotropy and optical properties of preferred oriented zinc ferrite nanowire arrays

Preferred oriented ZnFe2O4 nanowire arrays with an average diameter of 16 nm were fabricated by post-annealing of ZnFe2 nanowires within anodic aluminum oxide templates in atmosphere. Selected area electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction exhibit that the nanowires are in cubic spinel-type structure with a [110] preferred crystallite orientation. Magnetic measurement indicates that the as-prepared ZnFe2O4 nanowire arrays reveal uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, and the easy magnetization direction is parallel to the axis of nanowire. The optical properties show the ZnFe2O4 nanowire arrays give out 370-520 nm blue-violet light, and their UV absorption edge is around 700 nm. The estimated values of direct and indirect band gaps for the nanowires are 2.23 and 1.73 eV, respectively.
