Abstract
The sensitive monitoring of dopamine levels in the human body is of utmost importance since its abnormal levels can cause a variety of medical and behavioral problems. In this regard, we report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) from polyindole (PIN) via a facile single-step hydrothermal synthetic strategy that can act as an efficient electrochemical catalyst for the detection of dopamine (DA). The average diameter of N-GQDs was ∼5.2 nm and showed a C/N atomic ratio of ∼2.75%. These N-GQDs exhibit a cyan fluorescence color under irradiation from a 365 nm lamp, while PIN has no characteristic PL. The presence of richly N-doped graphitic lattices in the N-GQDs possibly accounts for the improved catalytic activity of N-GQDs/GCE towards electrocatalytic DA detection. Under optimum conditions, this novel N-GQDs-modified electrode exhibits superior selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, it could detect as low as 0.15 nM of DA with a linear range of 0.001-1000 µM. In addition, the outstanding sensing attributes of the detector were extended to the real samples as well. Overall, our findings evidence that N-GQDs-based DA electrochemical sensors can be synthesized from PIN precursor and could act as promising EC sensors in medical diagnostic applications.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA) is an important neurotransmitter which indicates the risk of several neurological diseases. The selective determination with low detection limit is necessary for early diagnosis and prevention of neurological diseases associated with abnormal concentration of DA. The purpose of this study is to fabricate a poly(3-aminobenzylamine)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PABA/PSS) multilayer thin film for use as an electrochemical DA biosensor. The PABA was firstly synthesized using a chemical oxidation method of 3-aminobenzylamine (ABA) monomer with ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant. For electrochemical biosensor, the PABA/PSS thin film was fabricated on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO)-coated glass substrate using the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method. The optimized number of bilayers was achieved using SEM and cyclic voltammetry (CV) results. The electroactivity of the optimized LBL thin film toward detection of DA in neutral solution was studied by CV and amperometry. The PABA/PSS thin film showed good sensitivity for DA sensing with sensitivity of 6.922 nA·cm-2·µM-1 and linear range of 0.1-1.0 µM (R2 = 0.9934), with low detection limit of 0.0628 µM, long-term stability and good reproducibility. In addition, the selectivity of the PABA/PSS thin film for detection of DA under the common interferences (i.e., ascorbic acid, uric acid and glucose) was also presented. The prepared PABA/PSS thin film showed the powerful efficiency for future use as DA biosensor in real sample analysis.

Abstract
Nanohybrid films had attracted much attention owning to the enhancement of catalytic activity. However, the fabrication time took hours to days, no matter if it was the preparation of nanohybrids or the assembly process. Furthermore, the catalytic efficiency of the nanohybrid film still remained to improve. In this paper, a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/gold nanoparticles (Au NPs)@polyoxometalate (POM) nanohybrid film was successfully fabricated by combining electrodeposition and electrochemical reduction in situ processes. The assembly process involving no organic or polymer linker molecules [except for a precursor poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) coating for indium tin oxide (ITO)] can be completed within 1 h. The reduced POM K6[P2W18O62]·19H2O (P2W18) was employed as reducing agents and bridging molecules for rGO and Au nanoparticles and the encapsulating molecules for the Au nanoparticles. The most interesting one is the {rGO/Au@P2W18} modified electrode loading only the monolayer catalyst of Au@P2W18 and exhibiting comparable, even better electrochemical detection performance toward uric acid than other sensors with three to eight layers of the catalyst. The amperometric detection displayed a great sensitivity, lower detection limit, wide linear range, good long-time stability, superior selectivity, and reproducibility. The enhanced catalytic property may attribute to the improved conductivity of the film without organic or polymer linker molecules (except for a precursor PEI coating) and the electron transfer in the process of film fabrication.

Abstract
Nowadays, several neurological disorders and neurocrine tumours are associated with dopamine (DA) concentrations in various biological fluids. Highly accurate and ultrasensitive detection of DA levels in different biological samples in real-time can change and improve the quality of a patient's life in addition to reducing the treatment cost. Therefore, the design and development of diagnostic tool for in vivo and in vitro monitoring of DA is of considerable clinical and pharmacological importance. In recent decades, a large number of techniques have been established for DA detection, including chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, spectroscopic approaches, and electrochemical (EC) methods. These methods are effective, but most of them still have some drawbacks such as consuming time, effort, and money. Added to that, sometimes they need complex procedures to obtain good sensitivity and suffer from low selectivity due to interference from other biological species such as uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA). Advanced materials can offer remarkable opportunities to overcome drawbacks in conventional DA sensors. This review aims to explain challenges related to DA detection using different techniques, and to summarize and highlight recent advancements in materials used and approaches applied for several sensor surface modification for the monitoring of DA. Also, it focuses on the analytical features of the EC and optical-based sensing techniques available.

Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive dopamine electrochemical sensor based on nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots-chitosan nanocomposite-modified nanostructured screen printed carbon electrode is presented, for the first time. Graphene quantum dots were prepared via microwave-assisted hydrothermal reaction of glucose, and nitrogen doping was realized by introducing ammonia in the reaction mixture. Chitosan incorporation played a significant role towards the selectivity of the prepared sensor by hindering the ascorbic acid interference and enlarging the peak potential separation between dopamine and uric acid. The proposed sensor's performance was shown to be superior to several recently reported investigations. The as-prepared CS/N,GQDs@SPCE exhibited a high sensitivity (i.e. ca. 418 µA mM cm-2), a wide linear range i.e. (1-100 µM) and (100-200 µM) with excellent correlations (i.e. R2 = 0.999 and R2 = 1.000, respectively) and very low limit of detection (LOD = 0.145 µM) and limit of quantification (LOQ = 0.482 µM) based on S/N = 3 and 10, respectively. The applicability of the prepared sensor for real sample analysis was tested by the determination of dopamine in human urine in pH 7.0 PBS showing an approximately 100% recovery with RSD < 2% inferring both the practicability and reliability of CS/N,GQDs@SPCE. The proposed sensor is endowed with high reproducibility (i.e. RSD = ca. 3.61%), excellent repeatability (i.e. ca. 0.91% current change) and a long-term stability (i.e. ca. 94.5% retained activity).

Abstract
Amide-functionalized materials have emerged as promising nonprecious catalysts for electrochemical sensing and catalysis. The covalent immobilization of chitosan (CS) onto graphene sheet (GS) (denoted as CS-GS) has been done via higher degree of amidation reaction to develop an electrochemical sensing matrix for simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA). The enhanced amidation between CS and GS has not been reported previously. However, electrochemical results have revealed that the CS-GS enhances the electrocatalytic performance in terms of the oxidation potential and peak current due to the higher degree of amide functionalization compared to that of CS/GS, which has a lower amidation. Differential pulse voltammetry-based studies have indicated that the CS-GS matrix works at a lower detection limit (0.14 and 0.17 μM) (S/N = 3) and over a longer linear range (1-700 and 1-800 μM), with a comparatively higher sensitivity (2.5 and 2.0 μA μM-1 cm-2), for DA and UA, respectively. In addition, the CS-GS matrix demonstrates good selectivity toward the detection of DA and UA in the presence of a 10-fold higher concentration of AA and glucose. The as-prepared three-dimensional porous CS-GS also endows selective determination toward DA and UA in various real samples.

Abstract
The construction of hybrid polymer-inorganic nanoarchitectures for electrochemical purposes based on the layer-by-layer assembly of conducting polymers and carbon nanomaterials has become increasingly popular over the last decade. This explosion of interest is primarily related to the increasing mastery in the design of supramolecular constructs using simple wet chemical approaches. Concomitantly, this continuous research activity paved the way to the rapid development of nanocomposites or "nanoblends" readily integrable into energy storage and sensing devices. In this sense, the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique has allowed us to access three-dimensional (3D) multicomponent carbon-based network nanoarchitectures displaying addressable electrical, electrochemical and transport properties in which conducting polymers, such as polyaniline, and carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes or nanographene, play unique roles without disrupting their inherent functions - complementary entities coexisting in harmony. Over the last few years the level of functional sophistication reached by LbL-assembled carbon-based 3D network nanoarchitectures, and the level of knowledge related to how to design, fabricate and optimize the properties of these 3D nanoconstructs have advanced enormously. This feature article presents and discusses not only the recent advances but also the emerging challenges in complex hybrid nanoarchitectures that result from the layer-by-layer assembly of polyaniline, a quintessential conducting polymer, and diverse carbon nanomaterials. This is a rapidly developing research area, and this work attempts to provide an overview of the diverse 3D network nanoarchitectures prepared up to now. The importance of materials processing and LbL integration is explored within each section and while the overall emphasis is on energy storage and sensing applications, the most widely-used synthetic strategies and characterization methods for "nanoblend" formation and performance evaluation are also presented.

Abstract
A simple, sensitive and reliable dopamine (DA) biosensor was developed based on a carbon dots (CDs) and chitosan (CS) composite film modified glassy carbon electrode (CDs-CS/GCE). Under optimal conditions, the CDs-CS/GCE showed a better electrochemical response for the detection of DA than that of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The oxidation peak current (Ipa) of DA was linear with the concentration of DA in the range from 0.1 μM to 30.0 μM with the limit of detection as 11.2 nM (3S/N). The CDs-CS/GCE was applied to the detection of DA content in an injection solution of DA with satisfactory results.

Abstract
AbstractRoom temperature 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetraflouroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) ionic liquid was employed for dispersion of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and the formation of nanocomposite on the surface of a carbon-ceramic electrode. The surface of the modified electrode was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modified electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical activity to oxidation of dopamine (DA); whereas electro oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) was not seen and electro oxidation of uric acid (UA) appeared at a more positive potential than DA. The multi walled carbon nanotube-ionic liquid nanocomposite modified carbon-ceramic electrode was used for the selective determination of DA in the presence of high levels of AA and UA using differential pulse voltammetry. The calibration curve for DA was linear in the range of 3.00 to 130 µM with the detection limit (S/N=3) of 0.87 µM. The present electrode was successfully applied to the determination of DA in some commercial pharmaceutical samples and human blood serum.

Abstract
Since the early 70s electrochemistry has been used as a powerful analytical technique for monitoring electroactive species in living organisms. In particular, after extremely rapid evolution of new micro and nanotechnology it has been established as an invaluable technique ranging from experiments in vivo to measurement of exocytosis during communication between cells under in vitro conditions. This review highlights recent advances in the development of electrochemical sensors for selective sensing of one of the most important neurotransmitters--dopamine. Dopamine is an electroactive catecholamine neurotransmitter, abundant in the mammalian central nervous system, affecting both cognitive and behavioral functions of living organisms. We have not attempted to cover a large time-span nor to be comprehensive in presenting the vast literature devoted to electrochemical dopamine sensing. Instead, we have focused on the last five years, describing recent progress as well as showing some problems and directions for future development.

Abstract
A simple and effective strategy was proposed for synthesis of AuNPs@polyaniline (AuNPs@PANI) core-shell nanocomposites. AuNPs@PANI nanocomposites were prepared by one-step chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline using chloroaurate acid as the oxidant and AuNPs as the seeds. The synthesized AuNPs@PANI nanocomposites were characterized with transmission electron microscope and UV-vis absorption spectra. Cyclic voltammetric experiments indicated that AuNPs@PANI nanocomposites showed excellent electroactivity in neutral and even alkaline solution. The obtained AuNPs@PANI nanocomposites-modified electrode was fabricated to simultaneously determine dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) by differential pulse voltammetry. The separation between the two peak potentials of DA and AA oxidation is 236 mV. The catalytic peak currents were linearly with the concentrations of DA and AA in the range of 10-1700 and 20-1600 μM with correlation coefficients of 0.9997 and 0.9998, respectively. The detection limits for DA and AA were 5 and 8 μM, respectively.
