Abstract
2D MXenes are widely proved to be potential electrode materials, although the size effect on their electrochemistry is not fully understood. In this work, Ti3 C2 Tx nanoflakes are prepared through acidic etching of Ti3 AlC2 powders, followed by the intercalation treatment with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide. Such a method produces large-scale delaminated and oxygenated nanoflakes. With aid of centrifugation, the nanoflakes with varied lateral sizes and thicknesses are collected, where electrochemical response of charged redox probes and polar phenol molecules is varied. Density functional theory and energy dispersive spectroscopy confirm such electrochemical response is dependent on the size and thickness of used nanoflakes, more exactly the oxygen content on their surface. Taking the nanoflakes obtained using a centrifugal speed of 5000 rpm (MX-TPA0.2 ) as an example, they feature good dispersibility, a high oxygen content, a small size, and a thin thickness. On these nanoflakes electrochemical response of polar p-substituted phenols is pronounced, stemming from a strong electron-withdrawing interaction of their oxygenated termination with the Ar-OH. A sensitive electrochemical sensor is further constructed for the detection of p-nitrophenol. This work thus provides an approach to synthesize MXenes with different sizes and thicknesses as well as further to reveal size-dependent electrochemistry of MXenes.

Abstract
This paper reports a voltammetric sensor based on copper oxide nanoparticles on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (N-rGO/CuO)-ionic liquid modified carbon paste electrode (N-rGO/CuO-ILCPE) for determining the hydroquinone (HQ). The N-rGO/CuO was prepared by a facile protocol, followed by characterization via fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) patterns, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The electrochemical behaviour was linearly symmetrical to various hydroquinone levels (1.0-600.0 μM) with a narrow limit of detection (LOD = 0.25 μM). The diffusion coefficient was also estimated to be 4.1 × 10-6 cm2/s. The N-rGO/CuO-ILCPE was impressively applicable in determination of hydroquinone in the real specimens.

Sensitivity Control of Hydroquinone and Catechol at Poly(Brilliant Cresyl Blue)-Modified GCE by Varying Activation Conditions of the GCE: An Experimental and Computational Study. Abstract
The poly(brilliant cresyl blue) (PBCB)-modified activated glassy carbon electrode (AGCE) shows the catalytic activity toward the oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT). The modified electrode can also separate the oxidation peaks of HQ and CT in their mixture, which is not possible with bare GCE. These properties of the modified electrode can be utilized to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for sensitive and simultaneous detection of HQ and CT. In this study, an attempt is made to control the sensitivity of the modified electrodes. This can be accomplished by simply changing the activation condition of the GCE during electropolymerization. GCE can be activated via one-step (applying only oxidation potential) and two-step (applying both oxidation and reduction potential) processes. When we change the activation condition from onestep to twosteps, a clear enhancement inpeak currents of HQ and CT is observed. This helps us to fabricate a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous detection of HQ and CT. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is carried out to explain the experimental data. The MD simulations provide the insight adsorption phenomena to clarify the reasons for higher signals of CT over HQ due to having meta-position –OH group in its structure.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are broadly known as porous coordination polymers, synthesized by metal-based nodes and organic linkers. MOFs are used in various fields like catalysis, energy storage, sensors, drug delivery etc., due to their versatile properties (tailorable pore size, high surface area, and exposed active sites). This review presents a detailed discussion of MOFs as an electrochemical sensor and their enhancement in the selectivity and sensitivity of the sensor. These sensors are used for the detection of heavy metal ions like Cd2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, and Cu2+ from groundwater. Various types of organic pollutants are also detected from the water bodies using MOFs. Furthermore, electrochemical sensing of antibiotics, phenolic compounds, and pesticides has been explored. In addition to this, there is also a detailed discussion of metal nano-particles and metal-oxide based composites which can sense various compounds like glucose, amino acids, uric acid etc. The review will be helpful for young researchers, and an inspiration to future research as challenges and future opportunities of MOF-based electrochemical sensors are also reported.

Abstract
Polythionine (PTH) is an electroactive compound known for its excellent electron transfer capacity. It has stable and redox centers in its structure, and it can also be generated by electropolymerization of thionine (TH). Due to its properties, it has been used in a large number of applications, including the construction of electrochemical biosensors. In this work, PTH is explored for its ability to generate electrons, which allows it to act as an electrochemical probe in a biosensor that detects CA 19-9 on two different substrates, carbon and gold, using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) as a reading technique in phosphate buffer (PhB). The analytical features of the resulting electrodes are given, showing linear ranges from 0.010 to 10 U/mL. The Raman spectra of PTH films on gold (substrates or nanostars) and carbon (substrates) are also presented and discussed as a potential use for SERS readings as complementary information to electrochemical data.

Abstract
An electrochemical sensor based on a cobalt oxide nanorod (Co3O4NR) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) (Co3O4NR-GCE) was prepared for simultaneous and selective determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT). Surface morphology and crystallinity of Co3O4NR were investigated employing field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The structure (16 nm) of the Co3O4 nanorod was observed in the FESEM image. A sharp peak pattern in the XRD survey revealed the following crystal planes in Co3O4NR material: (111), (220), (311), (222), (400), (422), (511), and (440). Electrochemical characterization of modified Co3O4NR-GCE was carried out performing cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Selective and simultaneous detection of HQ and CT was carried out by performing CV and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis. In both studies, modified Co3O4NR-GCE showed well defined oxidation and reduction peaks for HQ and CT with enhanced peak current, and the oxidation peaks for HQ and CT were observed at 0.152 V and 0.254 V, respectively, in the CV analysis. Scan rate and pH variation analysis were performed to evaluate different kinetic parameters, including charge transfer coefficient (α = 0.56 for HQ and 0.66 for CT), heterogeneous charge transfer rate constant (ks = 56 for HQ and 72 for CT), and the number of electrons involved in HQ and CT oxidation. Quantitative analysis of HQ and CT was studied by observing the current response of DPV analysis with respect to concentration variation. Here, the detection limit was calculated as 0.2 µM for HQ with a linear concentration range of 5–200 µM, and 0.4 µM for CT with a linear concentration range of 5–150 µM. The practical applicability of the proposed sensor was investigated using sample solutions prepared in tap water. The reported sensor showed impressive selectivity towards HQ and CT in the presence of common interferents.

Abstract
A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by a hybrid, macroporous carbon (MPC) functionalized with triazine bridged covalent organic polycalix[4]arenes (CalCOP) (CalCOP-MPC), has been fabricated and utilized for simultaneous detection of nitrophenols (NP). The obtained CalCOP-MPC were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which confirmed that MPC had functionalized with CalCOP successfully. Benefiting from the synergistic supramolecular effect of macrocyclic receptor of CalCOP and the excellent electrical properties of MPC, the anodic peaks of o-nitrophenol (o-NP), m-nitrophenol (m-NP), and p-nitrophenol (p-NP) in their mixture can be well separated by the prepared electrode. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements at CalCOP-MPC/GCE revealed that the linear ranges of NP isomers were all 1-400 μM, and the detection limit limits were 0.383 μM, 0.122 μM, and 0.212 μM for o-NP, m-NP, and p-NP, respectively. Moreover, the prepared modified electrodes showed a relatively good selectivity and stability, implying the prospect for detecting NP in real environmental samples.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
A simple and simultaneous electrochemical sensing platform was fabricated by electropolymerization of allura red on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the interference-free detection of dihydroxy benzene isomers.
Methods
The modified working electrode was characterized by electrochemical and field emission scanning electron microscopy methods. The modified electrode showed excellent electrocatalytic activity for the electrooxidation of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) at physiological pH of 7.4 by cyclic voltammetric (CV) and differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) techniques.
Results
The effective split in the overlapped oxidation signal of CC and HQ was achieved in a binary mixture with peak to peak separation of 0.102 V and 0.103 V by CV and DPV techniques. The electrode kinetics was found to be adsorption-controlled. The oxidation potential directly depends on the pH of the buffer solution, and it witnessed the transfer of equal number of protons and electrons in the redox phenomenon.
Conclusions
The limit of detection (LOD) for CC and HQ was calculated to be 0.126 μM and 0.132 μM in the linear range of 0 to 80.0 μM and 0 to 110.0 μM, respectively, by ultra-sensitive DPV technique. The practical applicability of the proposed sensor was evaluated for tap water sample analysis, and good recovery rates were observed.

Abstract
Hydroquinone (HQ) is one of the major deleterious metabolites of benzene in the human body, which has been implicated to cause various human diseases. In order to fabricate a feasible sensor for the accurate detection of HQ, we attempted to electrochemically modify a piece of common 2B pencil lead (PL) with the conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or PEDOT film to construct a PEDOT/PL electrode. We then examined the performance of PEDOT/PL in the detection of hydroquinone with different voltammetry methods. Our results have demonstrated that PEDOT film was able to dramatically enhance the electrochemical response of pencil lead electrode to hydroquinone and exhibited a good linear correlation between anodic peak current and the concentration of hydroquinone by either cyclic voltammetry or linear sweep voltammetry. The influences of PEDOT film thickness, sample pH, voltammetry scan rate, and possible chemical interferences on the measurement of hydroquinone have been discussed. The PEDOT film was further characterized by SEM with EDS and FTIR spectrum, as well as for stability with multiple measurements. Our results have demonstrated that the PEDOT modified PL electrode could be an attractive option to easily fabricate an economical sensor and provide an accurate and stable approach to monitoring various chemicals and biomolecules.

Abstract
In this work, we reported an electrochemical aptasensor based on the poly-3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-thiol/graphene oxide composite (P(ATT)-GO) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified graphite screen-printed electrode (GSPE) (GSPE/P(ATT)-GO/AuNPs) for determination of lipocalin-2 (LCN2) (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin). A sandwich based strategy was utilized to enhance the electrochemical signal. First, a thiol tethered DNA aptamer was immobilized onto the composite electrode. Then, the LCN2 solution was incubated with the aptamer modified GSPE/P(ATT)-GO/AuNPs. Secondary aptamer (Apt2) peculiar to the LCN2 and labeled with biotin was interacted with the LCN2. A streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate was then applied to the surface. The determination of LCN2 was performed by using the electroactive property of α-naphthol which is acquired the product from the interaction between alkaline phosphatase and α-naphthyl phosphate. The constructed electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The aptamer modified GSPE/P(ATT)-GO/AuNPs showed the superior electrocatalytic performance towards the voltammetric determination of LCN2 with a wide linear range (1.0-1000.0 ng/mL) and a low limit of detection (LOD) (0.3 ng/mL). The proposed aptasensor revealed the excellent sensitivity, anti-interference ability and reproducibility which approved that the GSPE/P (ATT)-GO/AuNPs is a promising composite for the sensitive detection of LCN2. The fabricated aptasensor was applied for the determination of LCN2 in fetal bovine serum samples using the standard addition method and the recovery values were in the range of 99.2% and 103.22%.

Abstract
Graphene nanosheets (EGr) were electrochemically prepared through one-step exfoliation of a graphite rod in a mixture of H2SO4:HNO3 (3:1) at low bias (4 V). Subsequently, gold nanoparticles were attached to the graphene surface (EGr-Au) by the reduction of the metal precursor (HAuCl4) in aqueous solution containing dispersed graphene sheets. According to the XRD investigation, the synthesized material consists of a mixture of few-layer (86%) and multi-layer (14%) graphene. The interlayer distance was found to be in the range of 0.466-0.342 nm, which is larger than the interlayer distance in graphite (0.335 nm). The average size of gold nanoparticles in the EGr-Au sample was 24 nm, in excellent agreement with the TEM results. The synthesized material was then employed to modify a glassy carbon (GC) substrate, in order to obtain a modified electrode (GC/EGr-Au). Next, the electrochemical behavior of hydroquinone (HQ) in the presence and absence of interfering species, catechol (CAT) and bisphenol A (BPA) was studied and the corresponding calibration curves were plotted. Thus, in solutions without interfering species, the GC/EGr-Au electrode has a wide linear range (3 × 10-7-10-4 M), high sensitivity (0.089 A M-1) and low detection limit (LOD = 10-7 M; S/N = 3). The presence of either catechol or bisphenol A leads to the increase of LOD to 2 × 10-7 M, and in addition changes the electrode sensitivity, up to 0.146 A M-1.

Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of phenolic isomers hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CC) and resorcinol (RC) was examined in poly(1,5-diaminonaphthalene)/glassy carbon-modified electrode (P1,5-DAN/GC M.E.) by cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV) and chronoamperometry (CA) techniques in perchloric acid (HClO4) and phosphate buffer solution (PBS, pH 7.0). P1,5-DAN/GC M.E. was investigated for simultaneous determination of HQ, CC and RC in single, binary and ternary systems. Oxidation peak potentials were negatively shifted with increasing oxidation peak current for HQ, CC and RC at P1,5-DAN/GC M.E. compared with bare GC electrode. The obtained results illustrate that the former electrode exhibits better performance towards the three isomers in PBS rather than in HClO4 solution. The catalytic currents for different concentrations of HQ, CC and RC showed good relationship in the range of 0.1-100 μM for all analytes and low detection limits (LOD) of 0.034, 0.059 and 0.14 μM for them, respectively, in a ternary system in PBS at pH 7.0. This method has been practically applied for the detection of these isomers in tap water with acceptable results.

Abstract
Here we reported the use of electropolymerization to achieve the transformation of aqueous hydroquinone to solid-phase polyhydroquinone (PHQ) with pseudocapacitive characteristics, and the application of this redox-active product to shuttle electron transfer in the anode system of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The microscopic and spectroscopic results showed that the treatment of the graphite felt (GF) substrate with acids was effective in improving the amounts of surface-bound oxygen-containing groups, enabling better adhesion of PHQ onto the GF surfaces. The electrochemical measurements indicated that the resulting PHQ–AGF (acid treated GF) possessed high pseudocapacitance due to the fast and reversible redox cycling between hydroquinone and benzoquinone. The MFC equipped with the PHQ–AGF anode achieved a maximum power density of 633.6 mW m−2, which was much higher than 368.2, 228.8, and 119.7 mW m−2 corresponding to the MFC with the reference PHQ–GF, AGF, and GF anodes, respectively. The increase in the power performance was attributed to the incorporation of the redox-active PHQ abundant in C–OH and C=O groups that were beneficial to the increased extracellular electron transfer and enhanced bacterial adhesion on the anode.

Abstract
A new strategy based on sign-on and sign-off was proposed for propyl gallate (PG) determination by an electrochemical sensor. The successively modified poly(thionine) (PTH) and molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) showed an obvious electrocatalysis and a good recognition toward PG, respectively. Furthermore, the rebound PG molecules in imprinted cavities not only were oxidized but also blocked the electron transmission channels for PTH redox. Thus, a sign-on from PG current and a sign-off from PTH current were combined as a dual-sign for PG detection. Meanwhile, the modified MIP endowed the sensor with recognition capacity. The electrochemical experimental results demonstrated that the prepared sensor possessed good selectivity and high sensitivity. A linear ranging from 5.0×10(-8) to 1.0×10(-4)mol/L for PG detection was obtained with a limit of detection of 2.4×10(-8)mol/L. And the sensor has been applied to analyze PG in real samples with satisfactory results. The simple, low cost, and effective strategy reported here can be further used to prepare electrochemical sensors for other compounds selective recognition and sensitive detection.
