The use of mixed self-assembled monolayers as a strategy to improve the efficiency of carbamate detection in environmental monitoring

Gold nanoparticle-based selective and efficient spectrophotometric assay for the insecticide methamidophos

A reliable, rapid, and inexpensive nano-sized chemosensor is presented for methamidophos (MET) - an insecticide. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized by a simple one-pot, two-phase chemical reduction method. The synthesized PLA-AuNPs were subsequently employed for selective, efficient, and quantitative detection of MET. MET is one of the highly toxic pesticides used for eradication of agricultural and urban insects. Upon the addition of MET, the wine-red color of PLA-AuNPs swiftly transformed into greyish-blue, further corroborated by a significant bathochromic and hyperchromic shift in the SPR band. The presence of other interfering insecticides, metal salts, and drugs did not have any pronounced effect on quantitative MET detection. The detection limit, the quantification limit, and linear dynamic range of MET utilizing PLA-AuNPs were  0.0027 µM, 0.005 µM, and 0.005-1000 µM, respectively. The PLA-AuNP-based assay renders an efficient, rapid, accurate, and selective quantification of MET in food, biological, and environmental samples. The proposed sensor provides an appropriate platform for fast and on-the-spot determination of MET without requiring a well-equipped lab setup.

Cobalt ferrite/semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes based field-effect transistor for determination of carbamate pesticides

Carbaryl and carbofuran are the carbamate pesticides which have been widely used worldwide to control insects in crops and house. If the pesticides entered in to the food products and drinking water, they could cause serious health effects in humans. Therefore, the development of a rapid, simple, sensitive and selective analytical device for on-site detection of carbamates is crucial to evaluate food and environmental samples. Recently, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube-based field effect transistors (s-SWCNT/FETs) have shown several advantages such as high carrier mobility, good on/off ratio, quasi ballistic electron transport, label-free detection and real-time response. Herein, cobalt ferrite (CFO) nanoparticles decorated s-SWCNTs have been prepared and used to bridge the source and drain electrodes. As-prepared CFO/s-SWCNT/FET had been used for the non-enzymatic detection of carbaryl and carbofuran. When used as a sensing platform, the CFO/s-SWCNT hybrid film exhibited high sensitivity, and selectivity with a wide linear range of detection from 10 to 100 fMand the lowest limit of detections for carbaryl (0.11 fM) and carbofuran (0.07 fM) were estimated. This sensor was also used to detect carbaryl in tomato and cabbage samples, which confirmed its practical acceptance. Such performance may be attributed to the oxidation of carbamates by potent catalytic activity of CFO, which led to the changes in the charge transfer reaction on the s-SWCNTs/FET conduction channel. This work presents a novel CFO/s-SWCNT based sensing system which could be used to quantify pesticide residues in food samples.

Current electroanalytical approaches in the carbamates and dithiocarbamates determination

Pesticides are a suitable tool for controlling plagues and disease vectors. However, their inappropriate use allows for contamination of the environment, soil, water, and foods. Carbamates and dithiocarbamates pesticides present accumulative effects in the human body resulting in hormonal, neurological and reproductive disorders, and some are still suspected or proven to give carcinogenic or mutagenic effects. This review provides a current electroanalytical approach in the carbamates and dithiocarbamates determination, showing the use of voltammetric techniques such as amperometry, cyclic and linear scan, differential pulse, and square wave voltammetry, indicating their advantages, disadvantages, and perspectives in electroanalytical detection of carbamates and dithiocarbamates in natural water and foods. Also are reported the different materials used in the preparation of working electrodes since their choice has an important impact on the success of the analytical applications, resulting in suitable sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and robustness.

Assembling Surface Linker Chemistry with Minimization of Non-Specific Adsorption on Biosensor Materials

The operation of biosensors requires surfaces that are both highly specific towards the target analyte and that are minimally subject to fouling by species present in a biological fluid. In this work, we further examined the thiosulfonate-based linker in order to construct robust and durable self-assembling monolayers (SAMs) onto hydroxylated surfaces such as silica. These SAMs are capable of the chemoselective immobilization of thiol-containing probes (for analytes) under aqueous conditions in a single, straightforward, reliable, and coupling-free manner. The efficacy of the method was assessed through implementation as a biosensing interface for an ultra-high frequency acoustic wave device dedicated to the detection of avidin via attached biotin. Fouling was assessed via introduction of interfering bovine serum albumin (BSA), IgG antibody, or goat serum. Improvements were investigated systematically through the incorporation of an oligoethylene glycol backbone employed together with a self-assembling diluent without a functional distal group. This work demonstrates that the incorporation of a diluent of relatively short length is crucial for the reduction of fouling. Included in this work is a comparison of the surface attachment of the linker to Si₃N₄ and AlN, both materials used in sensor technology.

A sensitive amperometric acetylcholine biosensor based on carbon nanosphere and acetylcholinesterase modified electrode for detection of pesticide residues

A sensitive biosensor based on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and carbon nanosphere (CNS) immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode was developed for the detection of pesticides by the inhibition of AChE activity. The inhibition effect of the pesticides resulted in a decrease of current response of the acetylthiocholine chloride that was used as a substrate to obtain an electrochemical signal. When applied to the pesticides carbofuran and fenitrothion, the designed biosensor exhibited high sensitivity and low detection limits. The inhibition ratio of carbofuran and fenitrothion were linearly proportional to their concentrations ranging from 0.40 to 4.79 and 6.26 to 125.31 μg/L, respectively. The theoretical detection limits were found to be 0.082 μg/L for carbofuran and 2.61 μg/L for fenitrothion. Furthermore, as the biosensor offers good reproducibility and stability, it could be used for trace detection of pesticides in real samples. Compared with other AChE biosensors, the proposed biosensor was convenient and it exhibited extreme sensitivity to pesticides.

Challenges and developments of self-assembled monolayers and polymer brushes as a green lubrication solution for tribological applications

Surface initiated polymer brushes, grafted from self-assembled initiating monolayers on a contact surface, provide opportunities to develop innovative solutions for friction reduction in tribological systems.
