Electrocatalytic oxidation and detection of N-acetylcysteine based on magnetite/reduced graphene oxide composite-modified glassy carbon electrode

Potentiality of PARAFAC approaches for simultaneous determination of N-acetylcysteine and acetaminophen based on the second-order data obtained from differential pulse voltammetry

N-acetylcysteine (N-AC) has widespread application such as pharmaceutical drug and nutritional supplement. Its adverse effects are rash, urticaria, and itchiness and large doses of N-AC could potentially cause damage to the heart and lungs. Therefore, in this work, a sensitive voltammetric sensor based on a carbon paste electrode modified with silica nano particles (i.e. Mobil Composition of Matter (No. 41) modified with Boron Trifluoride or BF₃@MCM-41) with a combination of 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl (DHB) (BF₃@MCM-41/DHB/CPE) was designed for determination of N-AC. The electrochemical oxidation of N-AC was examined using various techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under the optimum conditions, some parameters such as electron transfer coefficient (α) and heterogeneous rate constant (k_s) were estimated for N-AC. Due to the use of N-AC for the treatment of acetaminophen (AC) overdose, the application of modified electrode was investigated for the simultaneous determination of N-AC and AC in blood serum and tablet samples. Since, the signals of these species overlap and due to the presence of interfering species in blood samples, the simultaneous determination of mentioned species is difficult or impossible. To overcome this challenge, parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was used for the analysis of the complex matrices to obtain the spectral profile of each component and interference. To achieve this goal, electrochemical second-order data were generated using a simple change in pulse height of differential pulse voltammetry. The results of the presently proposed strategy for the real samples analysis are similar to those obtained with HPLC. Thus, the proposed method has acceptable performance for simultaneous determination of the two species in real samples.

Fabrication of Amine-Modified Magnetite-Electrochemically Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode for Sensitive Dopamine Determination

Amine-modified magnetite (NH₂-Fe₃O₄)/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrodes (NH₂-Fe₃O₄/RGO/GCEs) were developed for the sensitive detection of dopamine (DA). The NH₂-Fe₃O₄/RGO/GCEs were fabricated using a drop-casting method followed by an electrochemical reduction process. The surface morphologies, microstructure and chemical compositions of the NH₂-Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets and NH₂-Fe₃O₄/RGO nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The electrochemical behaviors of DA on the bare and modified GCEs were investigated in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Compared with bare electrode and RGO/GCE, the oxidation peak current (i_pa) on the NH₂-Fe₃O₄/RGO/GCE increase significantly, owing to the synergistic effect between NH₂-Fe₃O₄ NPs and RGO sheets. The oxidation peak currents (i_pa) increase linearly with the concentrations of DA in the range of 1 × 10^-8 mol/L - 1 × 10^-7 mol/L, 1 × 10^-7 mol/L - 1 × 10^-6 mol/L and 1 × 10^-6 mol/L - 1 × 10^-5 mol/L. The detection limit is (4.0 ± 0.36) ×10^-9 mol/L (S/N = 3). Moreover, the response peak currents of DA were hardly interfered with the coexistence of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). The proposed NH₂-Fe₃O₄/RGO/GCE is successfully applied to the detection of dopamine hydrochloride injections with satisfactory results. Together with low cost, facile operation, good selectivity and high sensitivity, the NH₂-Fe₃O₄/RGO/GCEs have tremendous prospects for the detection of DA in various real samples.

Iron-Based Nanomaterials/Graphene Composites for Advanced Electrochemical Sensors

Iron oxide nanostructures (IONs) in combination with graphene or its derivatives-e.g., graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide-hold great promise toward engineering of efficient nanocomposites for enhancing the performance of advanced devices in many applicative fields. Due to the peculiar electrical and electrocatalytic properties displayed by composite structures in nanoscale dimensions, increasing efforts have been directed in recent years toward tailoring the properties of IONs-graphene based nanocomposites for developing more efficient electrochemical sensors. In the present feature paper, we first reviewed the various routes for synthesizing IONs-graphene nanostructures, highlighting advantages, disadvantages and the key synthesis parameters for each method. Then, a comprehensive discussion is presented in the case of application of IONs-graphene based composites in electrochemical sensors for the determination of various kinds of (bio)chemical substances.

Graphene oxide as an interface phase between polyetheretherketone and hydroxyapatite for tissue engineering scaffolds

The poor bonding strength between biopolymer and bioceramic has remained an unsolved issue. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was introduced as an interface phase to improve the interfacial bonding between polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) for tissue engineering scaffolds. On the one hand, the conjugated structure of GO could form strong π-π stacking interaction with the benzene rings in PEEK. On the other hand, GO with a negatively charge resulting from oxygen functional groups could adsorb the positively charged calcium atoms (C sites) of HAP. Consequently, the dispersibility and compatibility of HAP in the PEEK matrix increased with increasing GO content up to 1 wt%. At this time, the compressive strength and modulus of scaffolds increased by 79.45% and 42.07%, respectively. Furthermore, the PEEK-HAP with GO (PEEK-HAP/GO) scaffolds possessed the ability to induce formation of bone-like apatite. And they could support cellular adhesion, proliferation as well as osteogenic differentiation. More importantly, in vivo bone defect repair experiments showed that new bone formed throughout the scaffolds at 60 days after implantation. All these results suggested that the PEEK-HAP/GO scaffolds have a promising potential for bone tissue engineering application.

Self-Assembled and One-Step Synthesis of Interconnected 3D Network of Fe3O4/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Hybrid for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrode

In the present work, we have synthesized three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (rGO NSs) containing iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs) hybrids (3D Fe₃O₄/rGO) by one-pot microwave approach. Structural and morphological studies reveal that the as-synthesized Fe₃O₄/rGO hybrids were composed of faceted Fe₃O₄ NPs induced into the interconnected network of rGO NSs. The morphologies and structures of the 3D hybrids have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The electrochemical studies were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which demonstrate superior electrochemical performance as supercapacitors electrode application. The specific capacitances of 3D hybrid materials was 455 F g^-1 at the scan rate of 8 mV s^-1, which is superior to that of bare Fe₃O₄ NPs. Additionally, the 3D hybrid shows good cycling stability with a retention ratio of 91.4 after starting from ∼190 cycles up to 9600 cycles. These attractive results suggest that this 3D Fe₃O₄/rGO hybrid shows better performance as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.

Simultaneous and sensitive determination of melatonin and dopamine with Fe3O4 nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide modified electrode

An electrochemical sensor based on a new nanocomposite of graphene/Fe₃O₄ has been fabricated for simultaneous determination of melatonin and dopamine.

Simple synthesis and photoelectrochemical characterizations of polythiophene/Pd/TiO2 composite microspheres

We report here a simple, effective, and low cost method to synthesize polythiophene/Pd/TiO2 (PTh/Pd/TiO2) ternary composite microspheres and apply such a composite to photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. TiO2 spherical aggregates of 200 nm diameter, consisting of nanoscale building blocks of TiO2, have been prepared by hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate in a water-in-oil emulsion system (Vwater/Vacetone=1/100). Pd species and PTh layer were decorated onto TiO2 microspherical substrates by reduction of Pd salts and polymerization of thiophene, respectively. The high surface area, effective charge transfer, and enhanced light absorption of the ternary composite could improve PEC performance under simulated sunlight. The sensitivity, selectivity, and stability of PEC sensor for detecting l-cysteine were much higher than those of the traditional electrochemical sensor. The detection limit of l-cysteine was 9.24 μM in the linear range of 0.31-5.30 mM. Moreover, the results also indicated a good anti-interference and acceptable accuracy in practical application, providing a rapid and sensitive detection method.
