Synthesis and electrochemical properties of novel, donor–acceptor pyrrole derivatives with 1,8-naphthalimide units and their polymers

Efficient orange and red thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials based on 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have emerged as a promising class of third-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) emitters that can achieve 100% internal quantum efficiency without the use of noble metals. However, the design of high-efficiency red TADF materials has been challenging due to limitations imposed by the energy-gap law. To overcome this challenge, two new TADF emitters, namely, 6-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (NI-TPA) and 6-(10H-phenothiazin-10-yl)-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[de]-isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione (NI-Pz), have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds exhibit strong TADF characteristics with a small energy gap (ΔEST) between the lowest excited singlet and triplet states, short delayed fluorescence lifetimes, high thermal stability, and high photoluminescence quantum yields. The OLED devices fabricated using NI-TPA and NI-Pz as emitters show orange and red electroluminescence with emission peaks at 593 nm and 665 nm, respectively, and maximum external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 11.3% and 7.6%, respectively. Furthermore, applying NI-TPA to cell imaging yielded excellent imaging results, indicating the potential of red TADF materials in the field of biological imaging.

The Role of Electrochemical and Spectroelectrochemical Techniques in the Preparation and Characterization of Conjugated Polymers: From Polyaniline to Modern Organic Semiconductors

This review article presents different electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques used to investigate conjugated polymers. The development of this research area is presented from an over 40-year perspective-the period of research carried out by Professor Mieczyslaw Lapkowski. Initial research involved polymers derived from simple aromatic compounds, such as polyaniline. Since then, scientific advances in the field of conductive polymers have led to the development of so-called organic electronics. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods have a great influence in the development of organic semiconductors. Their potential for explaining many phenomena is discussed and the most relevant examples are provided.

Allylamine PECVD Modification of PDMS as Simple Method to Obtain Conductive Flexible Polypyrrole Thin Films

In this paper, we report a one-step method to obtain conductive polypyrrole thin films on flexible substrates. To do this, substrates were modified through allylamine plasma grafting to create a high amount of reactive amine groups on PDMS surface. These groups are used during polypyrrole particle synthesis as anchoring points to immobilize the polymeric chains on the substrate during polymerization. Surface morphology of polypyrrole thin films are modified, tailoring the polyelectrolyte used in the polypyrrole synthesis obtaining different shapes of nanoparticles that conform to the film. Depending on the polyelectrolyte molecular weight, the shape of polypyrrole particles go from globular (500 nm diameter) to a more constructed and elongated shape. The films obtained with this methodology reflected great stability under simple bending as well as good conductivity values (between 2.2 ± 0.7 S/m to 5.6 ± 0.2 S/cm).

Extended 2,2'-Bipyrroles: New Monomers for Conjugated Polymers with Tailored Processability

The synthesis of 2,2′-bipyrroles substituted at positions 5,5′ with pyrrolyl, N-methyl-pyrrolyl and thienyl groups and their application in the preparation of conducting polymers is reported herein. The preparation of these monomers consisted of two synthetic steps from a functionalized 2,2′-bipyrrole: Bromination of the corresponding 2,2′-bipyrrole followed by Suzuki or Stille couplings. These monomers display low oxidation potential compared to pyrrole because of the extended length of their conjugation pathway. The resulting monomers can be polymerized through oxidative/electropolymerization. Electrical conductivity and electrochromic properties of the electrodeposited polymeric films were evaluated using 4-point probe measurements and cyclic voltammetry to evaluate their applicability in electronics.

Enzyme Modification and Oxidative Cross-linking Using Carboxylate-, Phenol- and Catechol-Conjugated 1,8-Naphthalimides

The ground- and excited-state interactions of β-alanine, tyrosine and l-dopa substituted 1,8 naphthalimides (NI-Ala, NI-Tyr and NI-Dopa) with lysozyme and mushroom tyrosinase were evaluated to understand the mechanism of oxidative modification. Photooxidative cross-linking of lysozyme was observed for all three conjugates. The yield was significantly reduced for NI-Tyr and NI-Dopa due to intramolecular electron transfer to the excited singlet state of the 1,8-naphthalimide. Incubation of NI-Tyr and NI-Dopa with mushroom tyrosinase resulted in an increased fluorescence from the naphthalimide, suggesting that the phenol and catechol portion of the conjugates are oxidized by the enzyme. This result demonstrates that the compounds bind in the active site of mushroom tyrosinase. The catalytic activity of mushroom tyrosinase to oxidize both tyrosine (monophenolase) and l-dopa (diphenolase) was modified by NI-Tyr and NI-Dopa. Monophenolase activity was inhibited, and the diphenolase activity was enhanced in the presence of these conjugates. Detailed Michaelis-Menten studies show that both V_max and K_m are modified, consistent with a mixed inhibition mechanism. Collectively, the results show that the compounds interact in the enzyme's active site, but also modify the distribution of the enzyme's oxidation states that are responsible for catalysis.
