Electrocrystallization of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles on platinum (Pt) electrode and its application for electro-oxidation of formic acid and methanol

In-Situ surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy study of electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol on Platinum/Gold surface

The behavior of ethanol oxidation reaction on composite electrodes prepared by deposition platinum on a gold surface (Pt/Au) were studied by cyclic voltammetry and surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) analysis. The results show that the Pt electrode has high oxidation activity and significant poison behavior; on the contrary, the Au electrode demonstrates low activity without a poison peak. The SEIRAS analyses reveal that both carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) appear during anode sweeping, and the CO peak density decreases with increasing potential and finally is eliminated. During the cathodic scanning, the CO peak reappears, and the peak intensity increases with scanning cycles, demonstrating a high poison behavior and the C1 reaction route on Pt. On the Au electrode, CO₂ and CO peaks were not observed; instead, an acetic acid peak appeared, indicating a C2 reaction path. For the Pt/Au composited electrodes, the electrochemical activities of the electrodes, as well as their poison behavior, increased with the deposition amount of Pt. However, the intensities of the poison peaks are smaller than those of oxidation ones; therefore, a higher tolerance to the CO poison can be achieved. For the 2 m-Pt/Au composite electrode, the activity is close to that of pure Pt, but the poison tolerance is 3 times the value of Pt.

Synthesis of Biogenic Palladium Nanoparticles Using Citrobacter sp. for Application as Anode Electrocatalyst in a Microbial Fuel Cell

Palladium (Pd) is a cheap and effective electrocatalyst that is capable of replacing platinum (Pt) in various applications. However, the problem in using chemically synthesized Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) is that they are mostly fabricated using toxic chemicals under severe conditions. In this study, we present a more environmentally-friendly process in fabricating biogenic Pd nanoparticles (Bio-PdNPs) using Citrobacter sp. isolated from wastewater sludge. Successful fabrication of Bio-PdNPs was achieved under anaerobic conditions at pH six and a temperature of 30 °C using sodium formate (HCOONa) as an electron donor. Citrobacter sp. showed biosorption capabilities with no enzymatic contribution to Pd(II) uptake during absence of HCOONa in both live and dead cells. Citrobacter sp. live cells also displayed high enzymatic contribution to the removal of Pd(II) by biological reduction. This was confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) characterization, which revealed the presence Bio-PdNPs deposited on the bacterial cells. The bio-PdNPs successfully enhanced the anode performance of the Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). The MFC with the highest Bio-PdNPs loading (4 mg Bio-PdNP/cm2) achieved a maximum power density of 539.3 mW/m3 (4.01 mW/m2) and peak voltage of 328.4 mV.

Formation of 3-Dimensional Gold, Copper and Palladium Microelectrode Arrays for Enhanced Electrochemical Sensing Applications

Microelectrodes offer higher current density and lower ohmic drop due to increased radial diffusion. They are beneficial for electroanalytical applications, particularly for the detection of analytes at trace concentrations. Microelectrodes can be fabricated as arrays to improve the current response, but are presently only commercially available with gold or platinum electrode surfaces, thus limiting the sensing of analytes that are more electroactive on other surfaces. In this work, gold (Au), copper (Cu), and palladium (Pd) are electrodeposited at two different potentials into the recessed holes of commercial microelectrode arrays to produce 3-dimensional (3D) spiky, dendritic or coral-like structures. The rough fractal structures that are produced afford enhanced electroactive surface area and increased radial diffusion due to the 3D nature, which drastically improves the sensitivity. 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), carbon dioxide gas (CO₂), and hydrogen gas (H₂) were chosen as model analytes in room temperature ionic liquid solvents, to demonstrate improvements in the sensitivity of the modified microelectrode arrays, and, in some cases (e.g., for CO₂ and H₂), enhancements in the electrocatalytic ability. With the deposition of different materials, we have demonstrated enhanced sensitivity and electrocatalytic behaviour towards the chosen analytes.

Revisiting the oxidation peak in the cathodic scan of the cyclic voltammogram of alcohol oxidation on noble metal electrodes

The origin of the oxidation peak in the cathodic scan of alcohol oxidation is elucidated with suggestion of new performance indicators.
