Electrooxidation of methanol and ethanol in acidic medium using a platinum electrode modified with lanthanum-doped tantalum oxide film

Enhanced electrocatalytic activity of Pt-SnO2 nanoparticles supported on natural bentonite-functionalized reduced graphene oxide-extracted chitosan from shrimp wastes for methanol electro-oxidation

In this work, tin (IV) oxide (SnO₂) nanoparticles were synthesized based on Amaranthus spinosus plant. The produced graphene oxide by a modified Hummers' method was functionalized with melamine (mRGO) and used accompanied by natural bentonite (Bnt) and extracted chitosan from shrimp wastes to prepare Bnt-mRGO-CH. This was utilized as novel support for anchoring Pt and SnO₂ nanoparticles to prepare the novel Pt-SnO₂/Bnt-mRGO-CH catalyst. The crystalline structure, morphology and uniform dispersion of nanoparticles in the prepared catalyst were determined by TEM images and XRD technique. The electrocatalytic performance of the Pt-SnO₂/Bnt-mRGO-CH catalyst was evaluated for methanol electro-oxidation through electrochemical investigations including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry techniques. Pt-SnO₂/Bnt-mRGO-CH showed enhanced catalytic activity compared to Pt/Bnt-mRGO-CH and Pt/Bnt-CH catalysts considering its higher electrochemically active surface area, higher mass activity, and better stability for methanol oxidation. SnO₂/Bnt-mRGO and Bnt-mRGO nanocomposites were also synthesized and did not show any significant activity for methanol oxidation. The results showed that Pt-SnO₂/Bnt-mRGO-CH could be a promising catalyst as anode material in direct methanol fuel cells.

A review on advances in green treatment of glycerol waste with a focus on electro-oxidation pathway

Over the past decades, research efforts are being devoted into utilizing the biomass waste as a major source of green energy to maintain the economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Specifically, there is an emerging consensus on the significance of glycerol (an underutilised waste from biodiesel industry) as a cheap, non-toxic, and renewable source for valuable chemicals synthesis. There are numerous methods enacted to convert this glycerol waste to tartronic acid, mesoxalic acid, glyceraldehyde, dihydroxyacetone, oxalic acid and so on. Among these, the green electro-oxidation technique is one of the techniques that possesses potential for industrial application due to advantages such as non-toxicity process, fast response, and lower energy consumption. The current review covers the general understanding on commonly used techniques for alcohol (C₁ & C₂) conversion, with a specific insight on glycerol (C₃) electro-oxidation (GOR). Since catalysts are the backbone of chemical reaction, they are responsible for the overall economy prospect of any processes. To this end, a comprehensive review on catalysts, which include noble metals, non-noble metals, and non-metals anchored over various supports are incorporated in this review. Moreover, a fundamental insight into the development of future electrocatalysts for glycerol oxidation along with products analysis is also presented.

Surfactant-Free One-Pot Synthesis of Homogeneous Trimetallic PtNiCu Nanoparticles with Size Control by Using Glycine

Homogeneous platinum alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are of great interest to the electrocatalytic community for potential use in various fuel cell electrodes. Increasing the surface area available per unit mass by decreasing the size of NPs while maintaining or improving activity is one of the key tasks of fuel cell catalysis. Achieving both in a synthesis of multielement NPs is still a challenging workup. In this investigation, we report the use of glycine as a size control agent to make ultrasmall homogeneous trimetallic PtNiCu NPs within 2-5 nm range. The mechanistic roles of dimethyl formamide (DMF), formaldehyde, water, and glycine are explored to understand the formation of these small NPs. Interestingly, it was observed that these PtNiCu NPs exhibited substantially enhanced mass activities toward the electro-oxidation of ethanol in comparison to commercial Pt black.

Catalysts of PtSn/C Modified with Ru and Ta for Electrooxidation of Ethanol

PtSn/C-type catalysts modified with Ta and Ru were prepared by the thermal decomposition of polymeric precursors with the following nominal compositions: Pt70Sn10Ta20/C, Pt70Sn10Ta15Ru5/C, Pt70Sn10Ta10Ru10/C and Pt70Sn10Ta5Ru15/C. The physicochemical characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). The electrochemical characterization was performed using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and fuel cell testing. PtSnTaRu/C catalysts were characterized in the absence and presence of ethanol in an acidic medium (H2SO4 0.5 mol L−1). All the catalysts showed activity for the oxidation of ethanol. The results indicated that the addition of Ta increased the stability and performance of the catalysts, as the Pt70Sn10Ta20/C catalyst had the maximum power density of 27.3 mW cm−2 in an acidic medium. The results showed that the PtSn/C-type catalysts modified with Ta and Ru showed good performance against alcohol oxidation, representingan alternative to the use of direct ethanol fuel cells.

Revisiting the oxidation peak in the cathodic scan of the cyclic voltammogram of alcohol oxidation on noble metal electrodes

The origin of the oxidation peak in the cathodic scan of alcohol oxidation is elucidated with suggestion of new performance indicators.
