Electrochemical Deposition of Flat Nanoporous Pt Layers with Small Pore Dimensions

Porous Platinum Black-Coated Minimally Invasive Microneedles for Non-Enzymatic Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Interstitial Fluid

Individuals with diabetes can benefit considerably from continuous blood glucose monitoring. To address this challenge, a proof-of-concept was performed for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) based on an enzymeless porous nanomaterial (pNM)-modified microneedle electrode array (MNEA). The pNM sensing layer was electrochemically deposited on MNs by applying a fixed negative current of -2.5 mA cm^-2 for 400 s. The pNM-modified MNEA was packed using a biocompatible Nafion ionomer. The fabricated MNEAs were 600 × 100 × 150 µm in height, width, and thickness, respectively. The surfaces of the modified MNs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The fabricated MNEAs showed a wide dynamic range (1-30 mM) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and in artificial interstitial fluid (ISF), with good sensitivities (PBS: 1.792 ± 0.25 µA mM^-1 cm^-2, ISF: 0.957 ± 0.14 µA mM^-1 cm^-2) and low detection limits (PBS: 7.2 µM, ISF: 22 µM). The sensor also showed high stability (loss of 3.5% at the end of 16 days), selectivity, and reproducibility (Relative standard deviations (RSD) of 1.64% and 0.70% for intra- and inter-assay, respectively) and a good response time (2 s) with great glucose recovery rates in ISF (98.7-102%).

Oxygen Evolution Reaction at Microporous Pt Layers: Differentiated Electrochemical Activity between Acidic and Basic Media

Nanoporous electrodes have received great attention because of their unique electrochemical properties. Here, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities at porous Pt layers with pore dimensions in the microporous range were examined. The OER activity of the porous Pt layers in acidic media increased as the porosity of the Pt layers increased, and the highest OER activity possessed an overpotential that was 270 mV lower than that of a bulk flat electrode. The porous Pt layers did not exhibit electrocatalytic enhancement for OER in basic media, wherein the surface area of the pores was not utilized for OER. The differentiated OER activity of the porous Pt layers demonstrated the different accessibility of reactants in OER: water and hydrated hydroxide ions. The roles of the pores in the Pt layers during OER were investigated using different Pt structures. The work will give insight into the electrochemistry of microporous electrode structures.

Size- and Density-Controllable Fabrication of the Platinum Nanoparticle/ITO Electrode by Pulse Potential Electrodeposition for Ammonia Oxidation

Pulse potential electrodeposition was successfully utilized to electrochemically fabricate platinum (Pt) nanoparticles on indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive glass substrates for catalysis toward ammonia electro-oxidation. The effect of deposition parameters (lower potential E_l, lower potential duration t_l, and upper potential duration t_u) on the size and number density of Pt nanoparticles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrocatalytic activity of the Pt nanoparticle/ITO electrode for ammonia oxidation was characterized by the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. The results showed that lower E_l and longer t_l accelerate the formation of Pt nuclei while longer t_u favors the growth of grain size to some extent, as E_l mainly tunes electrochemical overpotential while t_l and t_u affect the activation and mass transfer process. By the tuning of the deposition parameters, Pt nanoparticle/ITO electrodes with a polycrystalline nature and 5 nm-scale primary particles, could be easily modified in Pt particle size and number density. Furthermore, the Pt nanoparticle/ITO electrode shows high mass specific catalytic activity (MA) toward ammonia oxidation (1.65 mC μg^-1), much higher than that of the commercial Pt/C electrode (0.32 mC μg^-1). Additionally, the high catalytic performance results not only from the nanosize effect of Pt nanoparticles, but also from the special morphology formed during the electrodeposition process.

Electrodeposition of Highly Porous Pt Nanoparticles Studied by Quantitative 3D Electron Tomography: Influence of Growth Mechanisms and Potential Cycling on the Active Surface Area

Nanoporous Pt nanoparticles (NPs) are promising fuel cell catalysts due to their large surface area and increased electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we report on the influence of the growth mechanisms on the surface properties of electrodeposited Pt dendritic NPs with large surface areas. The electrochemically active surface was studied by hydrogen underpotential deposition (H UPD) and compared for the first time to high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) quantitative 3D electron tomography of individual nanoparticles. Large nucleation overpotential leads to a large surface coverage of roughened spheroids, which provide a large roughness factor (R_f) but low mass-specific electrochemically active surface area (EASA). Lowering the nucleation overpotential leads to highly porous Pt NPs with pores stretching to the center of the structure. At the expense of smaller R_f, the obtained EASA values of these structures are in the range of those of large surface area supported fuel cell catalysts. The active surface area of the Pt dendritic NPs was measured by electron tomography, and it was found that the potential cycling in the H adsorption/desorption and Pt oxidation/reduction region, which is generally performed to determine the EASA, leads to a significant reduction of that surface area due to a partial collapse of their dendritic and porous morphology. Interestingly, the extrapolation of the microscopic tomography results in macroscopic electrochemical parameters indicates that the surface properties measured by H UPD are comparable to the values measured on individual NPs by electron tomography after the degradation caused by the H UPD measurement. These results highlight that the combination of electrochemical and quantitative 3D surface analysis techniques is essential to provide insights into the surface properties, the electrochemical stability, and, hence, the applicability of these materials. Moreover, it indicates that care must be taken with widely used electrochemical methods of surface area determination, especially in the case of large surface area and possibly unstable nanostructures, since the measured surface can be strongly affected by the measurement itself.
