Abstract
Proton exchange membranes with high ionic conductivity and good chemical stability are critical for achieving high power density and long lifespan of direct methanol cells (DMFCs). Herein, a zwitterionic molecule was grafted onto the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers to obtain functionalized PVDF porous substrate (SBMA-PDA@PVDF). Then, sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) was filled into the pores of SBMA-PDA@PVDF, and further ionic cross-linked via H2SO4 to prepare the composite membrane (SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK). The basic groups on the zwitterionic interface could not only establish ionic cross-linking with SPEEK to increase chemical stability and reduce swelling, but also serve as the adsorption sites for subsequent H2SO4 cross-linking to significantly enhance proton conductivity. Super-high proton conductivity (165.34 mS cm-1, 80 °C) was achieved for the membrane, which was 2.12 times higher than that of the pure SPEEK. Moreover, the SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK membrane exhibited remarkably improved oxidative stability of 91.6 % mass retention after soaking in Fenton's agent for 12 h, while pure SPEEK completely decomposed. Satisfactorily, the DMFC assembled with SBMA-PDA@PVDF/SPEEK exhibited a peak power density of 99.01 mW cm-2, which was twice as much as that of commercial Nafion 212 (48.88 mW cm-2). After 235 h durability test, only 11 % voltage loss was observed.

Abstract
To improve the performances of sulfonated poly (arylene ether nitrile) (SPEN)–based proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), the copper phthalocyanine grafted graphene oxide (CP-GO) was successfully prepared via in situ polymerization and subsequently incorporated into SPEN as filler to fabricate a series of SPEN/CP-GO-X (X represents for the mass ratio of CP-GO) composite membranes. The water absorption, swelling ratio, mechanical properties, proton conductivity, and methanol permeability of the membranes were systematically studied. CP-GO possesses good dispersion and compatibility with SPEN matrix, which is propitious to the formation of strong interfacial interactions with the SPEN, so as to provide more efficient transport channels for proton transfer in the composite membranes and significantly improve the proton conductivity of the membranes. Besides, the strong π–π conjugation interactions between CP-GO and SPEN matrix can make the composite membranes more compact, blocking the methanol transfer in the membranes, and significantly reducing the methanol permeability. Consequently, the SPEN/CP-GO-1 composite membrane displayed outstanding tensile strength (58 MPa at 100% RH and 25°C), excellent proton conductivity (0.178 S cm−1 at 60°C), and superior selectivity (5.552 × 105 S·cm−3·s). This study proposed a new method and strategy for the preparation of high performance PEMs.

Abstract
The hydrophobicity of ultrafiltration membranes is the main cause of membrane fouling and reduced permeability, so it is necessary to improve the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling performance of ultrafiltration membrane materials. MoS2 nanoparticles that were modified with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), named MoS2-PDA-PEI, were added to fabricate a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane (PES/MoS2-PDA-PEI) for the first time. The effects of modified MoS2 nanoparticles on membrane performance were clarified. The results indicated that the permeability, rejection, and anti-fouling capability of the hybrid PES/MoS2-PDA-PEI membrane have been improved compared with the pristine PES membrane. When the content of MoS2-PDA-PEI nanoparticles in the membrane is 0.5%, the pure water flux of the hybrid membrane reaches 364.03 L m−2 h−1, and the rejection rate of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) is 96.5% and 93.2% respectively. The flux recovery rate of HA reached 97.06%. As expected, the addition of MoS2-PDA-PEI nanoparticles promotes the formation of the porous structure and improves the hydrophilicity of the membrane, thereby improving its antifouling performance. The hydrophobicity of ultrafiltration membranes is the main cause of membrane fouling and reduced permeability, so it is necessary to improve the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling performance of ultrafiltration membrane materials.![]()

Abstract
A novel two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate framework-graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposite (ZIF-L@GO) is designed as an inorganic filler in sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK). ZIF-L with unique leaf-like morphology is grown in-situ on the GO sheet in aqueous media at room temperature. The terminal imidazole linker in ZIF-L@GO and the -SO3H in SPEEK can form acid-base pairs in the membrane interface to produce low energy proton conduction highway. Benefiting from the unique structural advantage, the hybrid SP-ZIF-L@GO membranes displayed promoted physicochemical and electrochemical performances over the pure SPEEK. The SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 achieved a proton conductivity of 0.265 and 0.0364 S cm-1 at 70 °C-100% RH and 90 °C-40% RH, 1.76- and 6.24-fold higher than pure SPEEK, respectively. Meanwhile, a single cell based on SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 had an output power up to 652.82 mW cm-2 at 60 °C, 1.45 times higher than the pure SPEEK. In addition, the durability test was performed by holding open circuit voltage (OCV) for 24 h. The SP-ZIF-L@GO-5 provided better long-term stability than the pure SPEEK. These superior performance suggests a promising application in PEMFC.

Abstract
The shelf life of cherry tomatoes is short so that new and efficient preservation techniques or procedures are required to reduce postharvest losses. This study focused on the development of a sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (SPEEK) film incorporated with amidated graphene oxide (AGO), for the storage of cherry tomatoes in modified atmosphere packaging. The mechanical properties, gas permeability, and moisture permeability were subsequently tested. The evolution of attributes related to shelf life, such as gas composition, physicochemical properties, and sensory properties were also monitored during storage trials. AGO, as an inorganic filler, increases the thermal stability and mechanical properties of SPEEK-based films, while it reduces the water absorption, swelling rate, and moisture permeability. Importantly, all the AGO/SPEEK films exhibited enhanced gas permeability and selective permeability of CO2/O2 relative to the SPEEK film. Moreover, 0.9% (w/w) AGO/SPEEK film showed an enhanced permeability coefficient of CO2, corresponding to an increase of 50.7%. It could further improve the selective coefficient of CO2/O2 to 67.1%. The results of preservation at 8 °C revealed that: 0.9% (w/w) AGO/SPEEK film was significantly effective at maintaining the quality and extending the shelf life of cherry tomatoes from 15 to 30 days, thereby suggesting the potential for applying AGO-incorporated SPEEK films for food packaging materials.

Abstract
The development of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) that can avoid rapid decay of proton conductivity under low humidity is of great significance for the practical application of PEMFC. In this study, acid–base core–shell microspheres (PCSMs-MA@TAC) with a carboxylic acid core and a triazine shell were synthesized by distillation-precipitation polymerization using cross-linked carboxylic acid microspheres (PMAA) as seeds. These PCSMs were then incorporated into a sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) matrix to make hybrid membranes. Incorporation of PCSMs microspheres can not only strengthen the vehicle mechanism by increasing the water uptake of the membrane, but also the acid–base pairs formed at the SPEEK/PCSMs interface provide a new low-energy barrier pathway for proton hopping, thereby enhancing the proton conduction of the Grotthuss mechanism. The results show that when the content is 10 wt%, the proton conductivity of the SPEEK/PCSMs-MA@TAC composite membrane can reach 0.161 S cm−1 at 80°C and 100% RH, which is 19.3% higher than the SPEEK control membrane (0.135 S cm−1). In particular, even at 60% RH, the proton conductivity of the SPEEK/PCSMs-MA@TAC-10 composite membrane is still 67 mS cm−1, which is 3.16 times higher than that of the SPEEK membrane. Therefore, the SPEEK/PCSMs-MA@TAC composite membrane can maintain superior performance even under high temperature and low humidity conditions.

Abstract
A novel flower-like MIL-53(Al)-NH2 nanofiber (MNF) was successfully constructed, in which the electro-blown spinning Al2O3 nanofibers were introduced as Al precursors to coordinate with ligand in hydrothermal reaction for the formation of MOFs nanofibers. By incorporating the functional and consecutive MNFs fillers in sulfonated poly(ether sulfone) (SPES) matrix, high-performance MNFs@SPES hybrid membranes were obtained. Specifically, the peak stress strength could be strengthened to 33.42 MPa and the proton conductivity was remarkably improved to 0.201 S cm-1 as MNFs content increased to 5 wt %, achieving a simultaneous improvement on proton conduction and membrane stability. The highly promoted performance could be ascribed to the synergy advantages of unique structure and amino modification of MNFs: (1) The flower-like nanofiber structure of MNFs with high surface area could be beneficial to construct long-range and compatible interfaces between MNFs and SPES matrix, leading to sufficient continuous proton pathways as well as strengthened stability for the hybrid membrane. (2) The hydrophilic MNFs rendered the hybrid membrane with sufficient water retention for proton transfer via Vehicle mechanism. (3) Functional -NH2 groups of MNFs and -SO3H groups of SPES were consecutively and tightly bonded via acid-base electrostatic interactions, which further accelerated the proton conduction via Grotthuss hopping mechanism and effectively suppressed the methanol penetration in the meanwhile for the MNFs@SPES hybrid membranes.

Abstract
A membrane electrolyte that restricts the methanol cross-over while retaining proton conductivity is essential for better electrochemical selectivity in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Extensive research carried out to explore numerous blends and composites for application as polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) revealed promising electrochemical selectivity in DMFCs of carbon nanomaterial-based polymer composites. The present review covers important literature on different carbon nanomaterial-based PEMs reported during the last decade. The review emphasises the proton conductivity and methanol permeability of nanocomposite membranes with carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide and fullerene as additives, assessing critically the impact of each type of filler on those properties.

Abstract
A novel ionic liquid-impregnated metal-organic-framework (IL@NH2-MIL-101) was prepared and introduced into sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) with pendent carboxyl groups (SPAEK) as the nanofiller for achieving hybrid proton exchange membranes. The nanofiller was anchored in the polymeric matrix by the formation of amido linkage between the pendent carboxyl group attached to the molecule chain of SPAEK and amino group belonging to the inorganic framework, thus leading to the enhancement in mechanical properties and dimensional stability. Besides, the hybrid membrane (IL@MOF-1) exhibits an enhanced proton conductivity up to 0.184 S·cm-1 because of the incorporation of ionic liquid in the nanocages of NH2-MIL-101. Moreover, the special structure of NH2-MIL-101 contributes to a low leakage of ionic liquid so as to retain the stable proton conductivity of hybrid membranes under fully hydrated conditions. Furthermore, as a result of a cross-linked structure formed by inorganic nanofiller, the IL@MOF-1 hybrid membrane shows a lower methanol permeability (7.53 × 10-7 cm2 s-1) and superior selectivity (2.44 × 105 S s cm-3) than the pristine SPAEK membrane. Especially, IL@MOF-1 performs high single-cell efficiency with a peak power density of 37.5 mW cm-2, almost 2.3-fold to SPAEK. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the nanofiller not only contributed to faster proton transfer but also resulted in a tighter bond between the membrane and catalyst. Therefore, the incorporation of IL@NH2-MIL-101 to prepare the hybrid membrane is proven to be suitable for application in direct methanol fuel cells.

Abstract
The critical component of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system is the proton exchange membrane (PEM). Perfluorosulfonic acid membranes such as Nafion are currently used for PEMFCs in industry, despite suffering from reduced proton conductivity due to dehydration at higher temperatures. However, operating at temperatures below 100 °C leads to cathode flooding, catalyst poisoning by CO, and complex system design with higher cost. Research has concentrated on the membrane material and on preparation methods to achieve high proton conductivity, thermal, mechanical and chemical stability, low fuel crossover and lower cost at high temperatures. Non-fluorinated polymers are a promising alternative. However, improving the efficiency at higher temperatures has necessitated modifications and the inclusion of inorganic materials in a polymer matrix to form a composite membrane can be an approach to reach the target performance, while still reducing costs. This review focuses on recent research in composite PEMs based on non-fluorinated polymers. Various inorganic fillers incorporated in the PEM structure are reviewed in terms of their properties and the effect on PEM fuel cell performance. The most reliable polymers and fillers with potential for high temperature proton exchange membranes (HTPEMs) are also discussed.

Abstract
Acid-base pairs hold great superiority in creating proton defects and facilitating proton transfer with less or no water. However, the existing acid-base complexes fail in assembling into ordered acid-base pairs and thus cannot always take full advantage of the acid-base synergetic effect. Herein, polymer quantum dots with inherent ordered acid-base pairs are utilized and anchored on dopamine-coated graphene oxide, thus forming into long-range conducting pathways. The resultant building blocks ( nPGO) are integrated in a sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) matrix to fabricate composite membranes. The constructed long-range transfer highways with ordered acid-base pairs impart to the composite membrane significantly enhanced proton conduction ability. Under the hydrated state, the composite membrane attains 91% increase over the control membrane in conductivity, and the single-cell fuel based on the membrane achieves 71% promotion in maximum power density. Under anhydrous conditions, more striking augment in conduction is observed for the composite membrane, reaching 7.14 mS cm-1, almost 10 times of the control membrane value (0.78 mS cm-1). Remarkably, such anhydrous proton conduction performance is even comparable to that of the composite membrane impregnated with ionic liquids, which is hard to realize with conventional fillers. Collectively, these results endow composite membranes great potential for applications in hydrogen-based fuel cells, sensors, and catalysis.

Abstract
To obtain a proton exchange membrane (PEM) with high proton conductivity and low methanol permeability, a novel amino-sulfo-bifunctionalized GO (NSGO) was synthesized and explored as a filler for sulfonated poly(arylene ether nitrile) (SPEN). The result indicated that the microstructure of composite membranes was rearranged by NSGO and strong acid⁻base interactions were formed between fillers and the SPEN matrix, affording enhanced thermal, mechanical, and dimensional stabilities. Moreover, it was found that NSGO fillers were uniformly dispersed in the SPEN matrix, generating efficient proton-conducting paths along the SPEN/NSGO interface. Meanwhile, the sulfonic and amino groups of NSGO served as additional proton hopping sites to connect the ionic clusters in the SPEN matrix, creating interconnected and long-range ionic pathways. In such a way, proton-conducting highways with low energy barriers are constructed, which enhance the proton conductivity of the composite membranes via the Grotthuss mechanism. Furthermore, the composite membranes also effectively prevent methanol permeation, and therefore high selectivity (the ratio of proton conductivity and methanol permeability) is endowed. Compared to SPEN membrane, a 3.6-fold increase in selectivity is obtained for the optimal composite membrane. This study will provide a new strategy for the preparation of high-performance PEM.

SPTES was synthesized via condensation polymerization of 4,4′-thiobisbenzenethiol, 4,4′-difluorodiphenylsulfone, and disodium 3,3′-disulfonate-4,4′-difluorodiphenylsulfone. The imino-containing phosphorylated silica particles (Si-imP) were prepared by the Kabachnik–Fields reaction, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results showed that the Si-imP were uniformly distributed in the composite membrane. The properties of the composite membranes, including thermal stability, water uptake, swelling ratio, oxidative stability, and proton conductivity, were thoroughly evaluated. Experimental results indicated that Si-imP may be effective reinforcement materials for SPTES membranes. It is noteworthy that an increase in proton conductivity from 0.138 S cm−1 of the SPTES control membrane to 0.173 S cm−1 of the composite membrane was achieved at the Si-imP content of 5 wt% under fully hydrated conditions at 80°C. This finding primarily stems from the fact that the Si-imP could be linked with the sulfonate ion clusters of SPTES to form more continuous ionic networks. These networks act as efficient proton-hopping pathways to enhanced proton conductivity. The nanocomposite membranes are demonstrated to be promising candidates as new polymeric electrolyte materials for PEM fuel cells operated at medium temperatures.

Abstract
Sulfonated holey graphene oxides (SHGOs) have been synthesized by the etching of sulfonated graphene oxides with concentrated HNO3 under the assistance of ultrasonication. These SHGOs could be used as fillers for the sulfonated aromatic poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membrane. The obtained SHGO-incorporated SPEEK membrane has a uniform and dense structure, exhibiting higher performance as proton exchange membranes (PEMs), for instance, higher proton conductivity, lower activation energy for proton conduction, and comparable methanol permeability, as compared to Nafion 112. The sulfonated graphitic structure of the SHGOs is believed to be one of the crucial factors resulting in the higher performance of the SPEEK/SHGO membrane, since it could increase the local density of the -SO3H groups in the membrane and induce a strong interfacial interaction between SHGO and the SPEEK matrix, which improve the proton conductivity and lower the swelling ratio of the membrane, respectively. Additionally, the proton conductivity of the membrane could be further enhanced by the presence of the holes in the graphitic planes of the SHGOs, since it provides an additional channel for transport of the protons. When used, direct methanol fuel cell with the SPEEK/SHGO membrane is found to exhibit much higher performance than that with Nafion 112, suggesting potential use of the SPEEK/SHGO membrane as the PEMs.
